Water tastes/smells like chlorine

Hello! My husband and I just moved to the area and noticed tonight out water tastes/smells like chlorine. We use a Brita and this hasn't been an issue in the past week (since we moved in). Has anyone else noticed this or has this been an issue before? Thanks in advance!

Ours always does and it's worse in the morning or when no one has been home for a while. Just run the water for a few minutes before you drink it to flush out the pipes (which is a good idea anyway since we live in old housing stock with old pipes and old connections to city supply - flush the lead out too!) I don't drink much of it. Drink bottled water but for cooking, tea, coffee, my dogs ... I always let it run. I let my shower run too before I get in for the same reason. Smells like a swimming pool!

  • Not so bad here. Brita works fine w/very little scaling in reservoir over time. Even so, I think Chicago's tap water is more chlorinated than needs be.

During the closure of the Diversey and Laramie intersection traffic is re-routing itself down the 5100 and 5200 blocks of Schubert, Parker, Wolfram and George along with the 2700 and 2800 blocks of Leclaire and Lockwood. While the increased side street traffic is to be expected, what was unexpected was large semi trucks, dump trucks, car transport trucks and many other vehicles that have to be over 5 tons. Is there still a 5 ton limit on side streets? or is that no longer the law. This increased truck traffic on the side streets is creating several pot holes especially near speed bumps. Also the roundabouts are being run over and destroyed as the trucks make turns that they cannot fit through. While a lot of this might be expected during this time of construction another issue may be arising. A neighbor, that works for the water department has noticed that water mains near some homes, especially by speed bumps, are beginning to leak and bubble up water. He has reported this issue to the department and to the alderman. I'm hoping that these leaks are repaired by the city and don't become the responsibility of the residents.

What gets me are the same drivers use the same route everyday instead of finding a different way to go temporarily just until the work is completed and have some respect for residential side streets during this time

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

Those traffic circles in the middle of side street intersections in my opinion are more a hinderance than they are helping to accomplish anything just my opinion we all probably see it other ways and l respect that l don't want to stir up anything negative

One Less Empty Portage Park Storefront- Chop Local

Saw this sign hanging in the storefront at 4842 W. Irving Park Rd.
Someone hold my beer, I've got an axe to throw!

  • bellyer - You choose your "recreational" activity; I'll choose mine. It's my personal opinion (if I'm allowed to have one) that it's a stupid way to waste your time. I guess, according to the website, I'll just have to suffer my fate when the zombies take over. Can you protect yourself from zombies with an axe, or do you need a silver bullet, or a stake through the heart?

Everyblock:

I wanted to attend the meeting last Monday about brining business to the neighborhood. I think it was sponsored by West Portage Park Neighborhood Association. Did anyone attend or hear anything about the meeting?
Thanks.

Wow it was a packed meeting and had an interesting speaker from the city talking about economic development. The owner of a new Buisness was also there to introduce himself to the community. It's at central and grace and will be a bar/restaurant called Easy Street and everyone I spoke with is very excited about it opening in early April and we all hope this is the begging of businesses finally opening in the south part of Portage Park. They have other successful locations one being Pitchfork at 2922 W Irving. It was also attended by both Aldermans Sposato and Villegas. Some of the residents asked Villegas about the status of Central and Waveland. The WPPNA's President also inquired about this and asked who owns it. Villegas said it was purchased by an LLC and has had no one contact his office. After the meeting there were many of us that thought that was kind of odd since the lot was sold in February and no one has reached out to his office. We think this is a little suspicious given the history of the lot.

Handyman Needed For Kitchen Cabinet Alteration

Ever hear the saying "Leave well enough alone"? Well here is one such instance where I shouldn't have altered what was already in place. I gave away all of my white working appliances and replaced them with new stainless steal appliances only to encounter a number of new problems.
The new counter-depth refrigerator is the perfect depth but it is taller than my old one and will not fit into the refrigerator cabinet because of the hinges.
The 18" dishwasher needs a custom built toekick.
Has anyone else faced similar problems after getting new appliances? Any recommendations or handyman referrals?

  • Thank you for the responses. My brother was able to raise the cabinet an inch and a half. The refrigerator looks great now! Still tinkering away with the dishwasher issue.

  • thanks Karen, it is always good to hear the outcomes, updates on these post.

Tree Trim vs. Removal

I am noticing some of the orange no parking signs from Dept of Forestry. They are sporadic though, not on a full block like I have seen before. Is there anyway to determine if a tree is slated for removal vs pruning? I see one with a blue tag on it (think it means its been treated for a disease), but no markings/tags on the other trees, yet they have the orange signs on them also. Thanks for any info you can provide.

  • Dennis 30 year Jefferson Park resident

No need to be negative, Dan G. Poster asked a simple question. My answer to poster is that I thought trees that have been treated have red tags. Not sure what the blue ones mean, but you can as at the city's website--Forestry.

Ald Arena's Latest Spin: Calling It Veterans Housing. Even Developer Said Only 20 Units For Vets

Now Alderman Arena is selling the 7-story 100 unit CHA subsidized project as housing for Veterans! This has to be a new low, falsely using veterans as a selling point for a project. The fact of the matter is Full Circle Communities proposal for 20 of the 100 units to be exclusively for Veterans is dependent on getting a grant, not from the Federal Government, not from the Veteran's Administration, but from...Home Depot! Exactly how long that grant lasts, and whether Home Depot will continue to offer grants year after year, or call it quits once they have gotten their money's worth of good-will advertising is another question. Alderman Arena shamelessly suggests that there are 3000 veterans in the Jefferson Park area, needing housing; there may be 3000 veterans, but most of them are homeowners.
John Arena signed a court settlement on January 27th, 2017, stating that he will support a massive up-zoning (B3-5) that has brought us this nightmare project. John Arena violated the rights of the property owners when he down-zoned their property from M1-1, which allowed the property to be used as a storage facility, to B1-1 which does not.
John Arena had the owners' permits for remodeling the building for that use rescinded. The owners sued Arena and the City of Chicago because of his actions. They reached a settlement, and that is the one Arena signed, which gets him off the hook, but sticks the neighborhood with this mess.

http://nadignewspapers.com/images/Fully-Executed-Settlement-Agreement.pdf

  • 45th ward residents should demand to see the terms of that "grant" from Home Depot. For the sake of "transparency" of course..Is it open-ended, is there a "sunset clause" ?? What happens if and when the grant stops ??

Seeking carpenter or woodworker recommendations

Hello neighbors, I'm searching for someone who can design and create a few "pet ramps" for my home. Particularly for my back porch into the backyard, and also a ramp to our bed. Attached are some ideas that I have in mind. Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time finding someone to tackle this project. I welcome any and all suggestions. Thanks for your help!

Call Bosko at 847-912-4969. He is a fine finish carpenter, and our customers love him. Tell him Howard sent you

  • Thanks for the info Robin as I also would like some pet ramps/perches.

Assistance in locating siding person for wind damaged siding.

We had some very minor siding damage from the recent wind storm and would like to have it fixed. It's about a 10ft strip at the top of the house. My guess is it would take two qualified people 30 mins to fix. My problem is finding someone for such a small job and someone who doesn't want a minimum of $500 to come to the house. We have the piece that fell off.

This is what Ald. Areana thinks of anyone who disagrees with his far-left fringe ideology

When can we vote this arrogant, tone deaf fool out of office?

Yesterday is not soon enough!

  • Sadly, he may have aspirations for higher office, if you can believe it..Yikes

Agree with Anthony. Right ideas. Wrong delivery. No matter what the "other side" to this is there is no excuse for a public official to talk that way. Ever. This is the kind of thing that embarrasses me most about Trump. No class. Follow the Obamas "When they go low we go high."

Diversey and Laramie mining projects, road closures and CTA Re-Routes

At the beginning of January the CTA was told that the re-routes would end by February 4th. As of 2/7 buses are still re-routed not running on Diversey from Cicero Ave to Central Ave. due to the mining project at Diversey and Laramie. Bus drivers haven't a clue what's going on as to when these re-routes will end. Does anyone have info on this??

Michael I believe you are correct about the leak delaying the project. I spoke with a neighbor who works for the water department and he confirmed that all the blasting they did in January to replace the sewer main caused breaks in the water main requiring the evacuation pumps and delayed the project completion from Feb 4th to March 15th because there was a large "T": fitting that had to be replaced. Also the blasting created an issue one block North by Laramie and George which they will now start working on and Laramie will be closed starting March 22nd. But at least this doesn't cause bus re-routes.

Sometimes I think this happens so the company doing the work can milk the job to make even more money

Fall 2017 Kindergarten

Does anyone in the neighborhood have a child starting Kindergarten in the fall? If so, are they going to Belding or considering other options? What other options?

  • Thanks everyone! We have toured Belding and also submitted an application for magnets and selective enrollment programs. Counting down until letters go out in a few weeks!
I was just curious if anyone else in the neighborhood is going to have a child in kindergarten next year and where they are going. Would love to make some new friends.

At this point, you can't apply for fall to CPS (other than your neighborhood school). You will be able to find information for the 2017-2018 school year here: http://cps.edu/AccessAndEnrollment/Pages/OAE.aspx

Police presence

I noticed an increase in police presence between Irving and Addison/Central and Laramie. Does anyone know what happened or what caused the increased patrol this evening?

  • sorry to hear they have clout, diet changes and limiting meat and seafood can help, they can take inflammatory drugs, but avoid aspirin because it can make the clout worse.

  • Police are only half of the equation to crime fighting/prevention. The other half are active community members who call them whenever they see something or someone suspicious no matter how minute it may be. Criminals start small and gradually build up as they get away with the crimes they are committing. A good example of that would be the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
