History on 63rd Street and Pulaski

On 63rd St. just west of Pulaski (the library now occupies the location) there was a tavern operated by little people many years ago. On 63rd St. just west of Pulaski (the library now occupies the location) there was a tavern operated by little people many years ago. It is located right where the “Big Indian” stands and was right beneath it. It was called the “Midget Club”, although now that would not be the correct term. I am a history buff and Chicago History fascinates me very much so I thought I would also share this with everyone in the neighborhood just to get some history on our fine neighborhood. Back in the day (we are talking about 50’s, 60’s and some of the 70’s). It was run by a couple who were of course little people. They had a bar that was short enough for them to serve easily. Stools were regular height with some short ones for any little person that might visit, also the pay phone was mounted low on the wall to accommodate them. I'm sure there were other things that made the place unique.

A neighbor of mine said he use to visit the “Midget Club” - back about 1970’s since it was near him. It was run by a couple that had been Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz. There was a giant painting behind the bar of a scene from the movie. The stools were also shorter than what one usually sits on at a bar. My neighbor remembers the pay phone on the wall back towards the restrooms. I think the Midget Club was at a different location though some years prior to the 63rd St place. My neighbors talked about their family members going there back in the 40s or 50s.

The Indian is still there on top of the building which is now an Eyewear store. He wears a giant pair of glasses now. The Indian was featured in a famous scene in the movie Wayne's World. I haven't seen any arrows in it recently - I think they did something to prevent the kids from being able to do that.

How about that, we now have been given some history to share with our kids, hope this is okay.

  • I remember visiting the Midget Club in the months before they closed. Everyone was very welcoming.

  • It was first a tobacco store.

Calling the city on your neighbor to harrass

The Department of Buildings has a very important function. It is vital to keeping the infrastructures we call home safe and inhabitable. The Department of Buildings has a very important function. It is vital to keeping the infrastructures we call home safe and inhabitable. That being said, the way it is currently run leaves room for nosy, vindictive and racist neighbors to make anonymous and harrasing complaints. I feel that I am a victim of this system and in order to fight it, I have spent time away from work, money on unnecessary repairs and the horrible feeling that comes with fighting injustice. Its an uphill battle. Someone in Gage Park is using their anonymous status to attack hard-working, law abiding citizens. They confuse large latino families with "renters". This is harassment, it is racism, and we need to stop this as a community. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

Let me clarify for the people on this post questioning my circumstances. We have a carport, built with the proper permits because we ourselves can never find street parking. We are a 2 car family. We have 5 people living in a 4 bedroom household and we have Sunday lunch twice a month with 12 family members. My roof and windows are intact. My lawn and yard are tidy, my siding is in excellent condition. I shovel, rake and pick up other people's debris and dog poop from my yard, I have no pets. The police have never been to my house, except when I was robbed after Christmas 3 years ago. I do not have loud parties with DJs in the summer. I end them all before midnight. I have let the city in twice, they found no evidence of anything illegal. A third time, I missed an inspector but was not left a notice. Months later, I received a court summons with a list of outdoor violations. They were all thrown out of court once I went in with photo evidence. An anonymous person has called over a dozen times on me. I cannot fathom why. I'm assuming it's the Sunday activity, because everything else is above board. Everyone here is generalizing me. I am telling you about MY specific experience. Please, tell me your theories now. I say all of the above, not for praise, but because you are supposed to. These are things you should do if you want to live in a nice community and be a good neighbor. When I say I am being harassed, I don't say it lightly.

Recent Break-Ins in the 5900 South Tripp Block

An abandoned house has been broken into these past two days around the same time (around 2pm.)

On Monday afternoon, I called 911 and reported two suspicious guys standing on the corner of 60th/Tripp.
Two Hispanic guys, early to mid 20's.
One guy was wearing a black hoody and green jacket on top.

As I was walking East on 60th street; the guy with the green jacket crossed the street towards me. I kept walking and turned around. He stood...

He stood at the corner and was looking my way as I walked.

When I came home from the store; I noticed the next door's basement door was opened. It's a vacant house.

I called 911 and a police officer searched the house. He said no one was inside.

Yesterday (Tuesday) around the same time; I came home and there was a police officer outside the vacant house. Again, they had broken into the house.

This house is owned by CHA. I called the Alderman's Office and requested that CHA secures that house.

Moral of this story: If you see anyone looking suspicious or see any suspicious activity - please call 911.

  • Thanks for your concern

  • E_Spencer hello

Yes, I agree with you, St. Marie. A lot of people don't like to get involved. But we shouldn't have to live in fear. We all need to be proactive and protect each other. This neighborhood has gotten really bad.
