Hi there neighbors! We are looking to adopt a puppy next month and I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion or past experiences to draw upon to help me decide where to adopt. Here are a few facts about us:

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Thank you!

  • cheesecake chick i want to be the person my dog thinks i am

i would put a well worn but unwashed tshirt (or other clothing item) of the home Alpha in the crate with him at night. (something you would not care if he chewed up).

does he go in the crate voluntarily in the daytime? (does he consider it a "sanctuary" yet?)

sorry I have not been able to pull up the pictures you posted the link on. but he sounds like he is an adorable sweetie that will be an awesome dog when he grows up.

  • If the dog isn't eager to please you might as well just have a cat.

Question

If Garrido is elected, would he be eligible for 2 city pensions?

  • Gord, Mayfair home owner

It sounds like most everyone here thinks he should not get two pensions. I think if he earned two pensions he should get two pensions. Millions upon millions of people do. Some even get three pensions. Social Security, a company or union pension and a 401K or IRA. If you work long enough at a job to earn a pension you should be able to collect it regardless of how many that may be.

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

  • Ryan Richter Transportation Planner in Jefferson Park

I'd personally love to see this. There was the bridge to the Metra platform that closed some years ago. But a direct connection from the east to CTA would be great. Something tells me the Long/Argyle people would find a way to oppose it though.

  • And I thought the vocal Long & Argyle group only opposed upzoning.
The dog-whistle of racial and ethnic animus to get votes is growing louder.

Question: A 48 unit apartment complex has been proposed for a vacant parcel at L&A. The zoning proposal, which is on hold, has created much debate. What is your view on this project and how would you gather input on zoning proposals in general?

Garrido: "The problem that we have right now is that there is no transparency. We have secret zoning meetings that occur who knows when and who knows who's ...in those meetings. And with that the community is not involved in the process until either the project has been leaked to the press or until it's so far down the road that it's just going to happen. So, my position will always be is bringing the community to the table from the very beginning. These plans, those projects would have been up on my website from the day they came in the door. So that way everybody knows about it. Now,in particular for this project, the community has already spoken: 1,500 signatures plus have come in against it. They don't want it. And density is not always the answer to economic development. People have moved to these neighborhoods because they want to maintain the single family home character of these communities. This isn't Bucktown, this is JP, GP, this is OI, IP & 6C. We're more like to like like EP than anything else. So, I've already signed an agreement that I would not upzone that property.

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question:
What is your view on this project and how would you gather input on zoning proposals in general?

What does John Garrido say?
"...we have...no transparency..."
Density is not always the answer
I've already signed an agreement...not upzone that parcel.

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? Yes,
Mission accomplished.

Your assertion "The civil process does not include a governmental panel that simply evaluates land use and overrules or approves ideas based on criteria that you have identified as "for the greater good of the community"" is similarly unsupported.

Doesn't the Chicago Zoning Ordinance Ch 17-1-0500 Purpose and Intent section address the criteria for a zoning change?

Doesn't the intractability of the no upzoning 'community' affect all of the rest of the ward residents 'quality of life', 'needs' or 'wants'? Doesn't the lack of vibrancy, of sustainability, of safe transport options in a neighborhood affect all in the neighborhood, doesn't it affect our 'quality of life'?

Check out the Council approved plans that the zoning ordinance refers. The City has a plan to be sustainable, to address housing and to alter the modal choices for transportation and all of those affect Long/Argyle. You might fill up new single family homes but that doesn't mean it MUST be done, especially since single family homes close to transit is not in accordance these City Council approved plans.

So far, you've floated balloons, and I've repeated above, for "needs", "wants" and "quality of life" without definition for any of these terms and yet you expect to have the nebulous and undefined concepts outweigh the written plans and goals of the city in defiance of contrary results around the country.

Election update: Michelle Baert endorses Garrido in 45th Ward aldermanic runoff

Baert finished third in the Feb. 24 aldermanic race in the 45th Ward. The runoff is a rematch of 2011: incumbent Alderman John Arena vs. police lieutenant John Garrido. Both candidates will be trying to identify Baert supporters in order to ask for their vote. Baert received about 1,700 votes.

"Hi, ma'am. Your husband got really drunk at the bar, so I brought him back home for you."
"Thanks," the wife replies. Then, glancing around, she asks, "Wait a second...where's his wheelchair?"

That means he knew what was coming since 2011. We haven't heard a peep out of him about it 'til now, 'til now when the planes are already here and they're making all this noise. So, why wasn't any of this brought to our attention years ago? FAIR has bee sounding the alarm for about a year and a half and they've been others before that but it's all fallen on deaf ears with our alderman. Never wants to try to push back in 2011 or '12 or '13, let's get the community together, let's try to sound the alarm before this all happened., even though it started before he came into office, the fact remains he knew the noise that was going to be coming, because he says he's been going to all these meetings, so he should know about it and he did nothing. The other thing we can do is work with our legislators because right now we can only have 8...too much to get into 15 seconds, I'll pass."

“Fine, I’ll stop but you gotta get out and help it.” I say. So she jumps out of the car and picks up this baby skunk. Poor little guy is half frozen but still alive. She says, “What should I do?” “Bring it in the car” I tell her and we’ll “warm him up”.
So she gets in with the skunk and asks, “How should I keep him warm?” I tell her “Put it between your legs.” She replies “What about the smell?” So I say, “Just hold his nose!”
The doctors expect I’ll make a full recovery, but the skunk she used to beat me with died during the incident.

Does Jefferson Park business district need a multilevel parking structure either at this site or elsewhere?

Garrido: "Well, I think parking is important. I know that we like the idea that we want to make everything pedestrian friendly, and we want to have everybody walk and ride their bikes. While that's important, that's good, the fact remains, people drive. But I think that with any project, if the developer wants to put up a parking garage like what he was taking about there. Then, the first thing that needs to happen when any job comes into my office is I need the plans and all the information on the project. It
will immediately, right from the very beginning, be put up on a website so that way everybody can see it and everybody can be involved in a discussion and understand and know what is going on. Then we would have a community meeting about it. For me it's gonna be all about community first. We need to have the community right in the process from the very beginning so we get that input,so we get that feedback,so a developer doesn't necessarily waste their time doing something that the community isn't going to accept. And then the community can have a voice in that process. Unfortunately, a lot of the process that we have now it doesn't seem to go that way."

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question: Does J
P need a parking structure?

What does John Garrido say?
Parking is important.
Discount people walking and people biking.
Pivot to canned answer about zoning process.
"For me it's gonna be all about community first."
Diminish the existing process.

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.

  • The more of these that I transcribe, the more it seems to me that Mr Garrido's extemporaneous fragments ("If that owner is unwilling to do something with those lots that I think would benefit the community...") contradict his canned, coached comments ("For me it's gonna be all about community first. We need to have the community right in the process from the very beginning so we get that input,so we get that feedback,so a developer doesn't necessarily waste their time doing something that the community isn't going to accept.")

My function and my goal as alderman is to work for you, to represent your best interests, to work for our community first. Everything I do is going to have that decision in mind. So, whoever the mayor is, we have to have a working relationship. I think it's just as damaging to our community to be a rubber-stamp of no as it is to be a rubber-stamp of yes. There's give and take, there's negotiation in everything, that's how it works. And if you don't do that, all it does is negatively impact you. You need to know what battles to fight and what battles are not important to fight. You need to pick your right battles and you need to make sure you're picking 'em based on how it's going to impact
your community and that's our community."

He walked in; She turned and said,

His eyes lit up and he thought,

"This is my lucky day."
Not wanting to lose the moment, he embraced her
and then gave it his all;
right there on the kitchen table.
Afterwards she said,

"Thanks,"
and returned to the stove.
More than a little puzzled, he asked,

"What was that all about?"
She explained,
"The egg timer's broken."

To a photo of Arena from one of his mailers: "He looks like a dog, the kind with the long face, that sniffs the ground."

To a photo of Garrido: "He looks happy....(pointing to his mouth) That looks like one big tooth in there."

She also wanted to now if either of them liked My Little Pony.

What's with the speed camera on Cicero just North of Lawrence?

Just after the bend, passed the overpass, is a speed camera. There is no park there, no school, and I believe there isn't even a crossing or sidewalk on the east side of the street. Not sure I understand why there's a camera there.

  • ccc,

City has a budget crunch from salting away all of the TIF money and selling the parking meters for $1B below value, police enforcement is expensive plus Mayor 1% would have to hire more officers.

Appropriate street design is a more cost effective way to convince you not to speed and get photo-ticketed. Over use of stop signs diminishes their effectiveness.

Newcastle is too wide to be a one way street, you'd expect drivers to speed as they perceive no reason not to.

One day, the dogs are watching the horses and they notice a little horse, about 2/3 the size of the others, trying to run with them. The bigger horses are toying with the little guy, letting him think he's going to win, and at the last moment, they speed by him, winning the practice race. They do this for over a half hour.

"It is, and I can't stand to watch any more of this. I'm going over there to give those bigger horses a piece of my mind!"
And with that, the dogs head over to where the horses are. The dog goes up to the biggest horse and says:

"Look, I've been watching you guys! I've seen how you're picking on that little horse, letting him think he's going to win, but then beating him and making him feel miserable. It's terrible sportsmanship, and I think you should stop this immediately!"

The one big horse looks around, then looks at another of the big horses and says

I ordered the Tampiquena dinner and it was ENORMOUS! I thought it would be filling for the $23 price tag, but I had no idea that it would be enough to feef 4 people. The platter came with a gigantic grilled skirt steak, beans, rice, guac, and a quesadilla. The steak was probably one of the best steaks I've had in Chicago. It was popping with flavor and so tender it practically fell apart. The rice and beans were delicious as well. I probably only finished about 1/8 of the dinner. The portions are that huge.

My husband got the taco dinner, and for $12, he thought it was a pretty good deal. He got 1 chicken, 1 steak, and 1 chorizo taco. He said they were all pretty good, and the flavor of the beans and rice was excellent.

I will 100% be going back and ordering that steak, but next time I'll being 2-3 friends to help me finish it!

Culver's wouldn't compete with Leadbelly. Totally different level of burger joints. A Meatheads or Five Guys might compete but not Culver's. Truthfully, Culver's would be more of a "threat" to Dairy Queen than Leadbelly.

The development on irving will look alot like village crossing in skokie on touhy avenue just without the theatre and dicks...

State Budget

Newly elected Gov. Bruce Rauner announced in his budget speech that the Regional Transit Authority can lose up to $128 million in state funding, while downstate gains $120 million in capital projects. Yet we pay higher gas, property and sales tax than downstate Illinois while they reap the benefits of Chicago/ suburban taxpayers. Downstate Illinois is draining state resources and it's all brought to you in part by our corrupt governor.
