Rib Tips...

Is there a place nearby that has Rib Tips? It seems most places only sell the full or half slab...I do like rib tips, though....

  • Kelly Dunning

Mickey's on Harlem in Oak Park. They can be hit or miss, but I think overall they're decent.

  • Johnny Portage Park

Although not in Portage Park, Honey 1 has some of the best tips around.

I'll add to Johnny's comment, great product at Honey 1. Little bit closer timewise is Bens BBQ at Oak Park Ave. and North Ave.

Both of the above places would be the real deal, low and slow cooking over hardwood.

    Here's LTH's take on Ben's.

If you just want rib tips but not BBQ style, Bubs at Irving and Menard have it on their menu. It's pretty good.

I expect my elected Alderman to "know this stuff". I would hope he's learned it on the job. His role includes real estate/property zoning. Approving changes or disapproving changes based on sound knowledge.

I essentially see an Alderman as a steward. Their job is to take care of us currently but a way bigger responsibility is to plan for the future. The future that will happen when I'm dead and gone. Decisions made now will affect the future of our neighborhoods. An Alderman isn't here forever.

  • We all have certain expectations of our elected officials. Sadly, far to many have had their own agendas, some have served time, some have gotten rich, some are on a power trip, and some are just plain dumb. I have been fortunate to know a few truly exceptional public servants. A public servant would be wise to consider who are the stakeholders now and in the future. We, as stakeholders should take an interest in matters that impact our community.

Looking for best place to buy poppyseed & nut rolls

My sister usually does the traditional holiday baking but this year she just doesn't have time. I'm not a baker and I've seen the poppyseed roll at the Produce Center. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any other place that sells both poppyseed and nut rolls.

  • LadyLord Portage Park citizen

I thought I posted earlier but I guess it didn't go through...I'm sure I've seen the poppyseed rolls you're talking about at Montrose Deli. Not sure about nut rolls. I also am able to buy really good rye there.

Tree trimming pick-up / collection service?

Hi all - any recommendations for a service to pick up branches/ big branch limbs we recently cut ourselves? We have a small truck load. Thanks in advance!

  • Sure - Giovanni's Tree Service is in Jefferson Park and very reasonably priced.
    I have used them before.
    773-777-8911

  • If you haul it all out to the curb and call 311 and ask for a forestry service the city will chip it up but be prepared to wait.

    Dennis

  • Call Norwood Park, I know they have a section of of Avondale, they use for people who bring trees, branches, bushes for mulch. If you dont mind hauling it there. Im sure they will take it. PS you dont get to keep the mulch its for the parks to use.

Proposed apartment development near Jeff Park transit center.

To me, the investor sounds like another developer who thinks he/ she knows what's best for a neighborhood they don't know or live.

CJ - I'll try to respond. I was in attendance at some of the architectural review meetings for this development. The zoning advisory committee that I sit on has local residents that are primarily architects and urban planners by profession (I'm an urban planner myself). The developer proposed this development to the Alderman, who in turn met with his zoning advisory committee to hash out architectural details and the like. I'll tell you that this proposal is not the first iteration, that there has been substantial review by the zoning advisory committee, the Alderman's staff and the Alderman himself. Next will be a public meeting for the community to weigh in.

In terms of scale, the height of the building is similar to some of the buildings along the stretch of NW Highway between Milwaukee and Long. In fact, the height is less than that of the church right across the street. The parking for the building is provided at the ratio of 1:1, which is actually higher than allowed under the city's transit-oriented development ordinance. That parking will be within the building itself - no on-street parking.

The Alderman himself has addressed some of the other issues raised here in his comments in the other thread related to this topic.

Going rate for house/dog sitter?

I'd like to have someone house/dog sit for us for a week. The dog is super low maintenance - she just needs to be fed once a day and let out a couple of times during the day (into the back yard). The person would also need to sleep at our house . I am thinking of asking a friend to do it, but I want to know what the fair compensation for such a request might be?

Putting a stop to doorstep litter? (RedPlum & Yellow Pages)

I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I believe that there are ways to opt out of receiving these things, but, by and large, it seems that most people have no desire to receive them. This is a huge waste of paper and an eyesore in all neighborhoods across Chicago as they sit out. I personally think that people should have to opt-in to receive these sorts of things not go through time consuming steps to *try* and opt-out of receiving them.

How is it that this sort of unsolicited material that arrives at our homes only to be thrown out is allowed? Why does the city not consider this to be littering or some other violation?

I hardly know anyone that uses a phonebook these days, yet they arrive on our doorsteps only to sit there for weeks/months rotting in the rain, until they are finally all picked up and disposed of. The Tribune/RedPlum papers may not sit out for as long as phone books usually do, but they arrive a couple times a week and I am getting really tired of picking them up.

Can't we get these things to stop? I know that there was a law suit filed over the RedPlum papers last summer; not sure how that ended up though, if it has even been resolved yet... http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/20318975-418/residents-sue-chicago-tribune-over-nuisance-coupons.html

Most of the trees that are coming down are infected with the emerald ash borer, an invasive bug that eats the tree from the inside out. Almost every ash tree in the area is infected. And even if a tree looks well, the ash borer is likely killing the tree and creating a hazard.

It is going to take years for us to work through the devastation caused by this insect.

The good news is that the city is beginning to plant trees again. If you would like a tree, please email us. Please note, we cannot guarantee a specific type of tree.

Tree trimming

I have a large tree that needs trimming - by a licensed and insured service. Does anyone have a recommendation?

  • If the trees are in the parkway they need to be cared for by the City or a company authorized by the City. The Care of Trees is authorized. There are probably other companies, too.

We have used The Care of Trees for years.

    Good luck.

  • I don't know about what PeralK says about Care of Trees being authorized by the City to trim parkway trees...but I heard they have had and might still have a business relationship with Wright College, working on their trees and supplying them with wood chips for landscaping.

People's Gas shutoff for no inspection?

I'm in a bit of panic as we got a disconnection notice (due to me not calling them to set up a time for a mandatory safety inspection). It's completely my fault but I wasn't aware and now that I'm aware I'm trying to call with no luck. I call in the am and pm and get the same message that they are too busy and try back another time. Grrrr. They gave us 1 866 524 0795.

Any suggestion to get a hold of someone to schedule this inspection? Before my gas is off! Any help appreciated!

  • I called 1-866-573-6880 and chose the option to speak to a representative.
You will hear a message that the hold time is extremely long, but I only waited about 10 minutes.

  • I believe that I scheduled my inspection on line!

Higher Property Taxes, Better Schools??

Reading the paper today our Mayor thinks our property taxes are to low compared to the suburbs. Now the decision falls to the City Council (Our Alderman). The only reason I'm still residing in the City of Chicago is because of the low taxes compared to suburbs. Emanuel aides claim that an owner of an $250,000.00 home would pay an additional $58 per year on top of a $4,000.00 property tax bill each of the next five years. For them to even consider this is a complete joke. If this was going for a bump in city services I might consider. What do you all think?

What has killed retirement savings after the loss of the enforced savings of a traditional company pension has been other employment trends. (1) The viscious rising dominance of the benefitless twin practices of part time work and borderline criminal use of the 'independent contractor' employment designations. These two evils are crushing low and middle income retirement savings potentials by eliminating structural discipline and economies of scale. Consider that when these two practices spread into the lower half of the workforce, wages did not rise. But the cost to employers went down. (2) Failure of real wages to increase to make up for the loss of paid benefits. (3) Rising medical and educational costs will in advance of general cost-of-living inflation.

The Social Security trust fund is officially named the "Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund." In 1940 (the year in which "modern" Social Security started), only 54% of males and 60% of females who survived to age 21 would live long enough to receive any benefits at all (other than the burial benefit). Today those numbers are around 75% and 85%.

Another quip -- my grandmother lived during the income tax amendment campaign. She once told me that if people knew then what it would become, there would have been a revolution. The income tax was sold as applying only to the wealthy, and started at 1% for the very well to do. It was a very different time then. My grandparents (an elementary school teacher and salesman) did well in retirement, due to pensions, savings, stocks with dividend payments. Social Security for them was just icing, letting them travel internationally and extensively in retirement.

They also happened to have lived during a unique period, where the United States survived 100% intact following an incredibly destructive war, with massive industrial capacity, and leveraged that into economic dominance and great prosperity. Times change though, and we've been living through that. One facet of people is that we tend to view what we experience as "normal" and don't really conceive of or plan for different times. Look at the income tax, and the implications that has for our form of government. How many people today can conceive of a time where the income tax didn't exist, and the (much much smaller) federal government survived on nothing but excise and other non-direct forms of taxation?

Anyone else sick of the constant sales calls from Neighborhood Restoration?

Men from the company Neighborhood Restoration have been to our door several times over the course of the year (including twice last night) telling us that we had storm damage to our siding and offering to replace the siding on our house. They have continually told us that they would "smooth it over with the insurance company." This sounds suspicious to me, especially because my siding does not look damaged.

Anyone dealt with this company? Has anyone successfully gotten them to stop ringing the doorbell in the middle of dinner?
