Pizza Delivery People

Last night on 07/21/2014, a neighbor in the 5300 block of Windsor got a pizza around midnight. The entire neighborhood was treated to an impromptu Madonna concert by the delivery person. You could hear the stereo in his black SUV blasting down the entire block. When I told him that I didn't appreciate the loud music, he told me to call the F-ing cops.

He was a stocky white male with brown hair and a beard. If this is your guy pizza peeps, he's not representing your business well with the neighborhood.

  • Joanie, can you ask this neighbor where he/she ordered pizza from? Then, call pizza place and ask to speak to mgr about incident. File a complaint there.

  • CubblesMom,

I second that. Unless contested, this barbaric behavior will only persist unabated. Do it Joanie. I would, if not for yourself then for others who will likely e subjected to much of the same. The piizza delivery dolt is responsible for his conduct and should be made to answer...

The piizza delivery dolt is responsible for his conduct and should be made to answer for it. If I were the owner/manager and Joanie called me, here is what I would do. I 'd provide Joanie a FREE pizza delivered by the offender along with his personal apology. If he refused to apologize, he'd be looking for another job.

Alderman Arena at odds with Jefferson Park Advisory Council

Alderman wants council to increase its membership and has claimed that the recent council election, which resulted in an Arena aide not being elected, was not properly announced. Thousands have attended the council's free events at the park, but turnout to its meetings is low, which Friends of the Parks says is common for councils in the city. This is not the first time that the council and Arena have disagreed.
http://nadignewspapers.com/2014/07/23/arena-at-odds-with-park-council/

  • Mike Q. Portage Park resident

I think both are doing a fine job in their respective roles and should continue to do so. We should keep government out of these councils and neighborhood organizations. If Alderman Arena wants to participate as an active and concerned citizen and not attempt to push an agenda he should be welcomed to do so.

  • Old IrvingAnna - are you stating that Anna Klocek has never received a paycheck from Alderman Arena? On more than one occasion Ms. Klocek has has stated that she works for Alderman Arena.

Neighbor Dilemma - Advice Please

My wife and I moved here to a gorgeous bungalow in Portage Park last year and love everything about the neighborhood except for our next door neighbors on one side of our house. They are a three generation home that is constantly smoking pot, even around small children, the smoke from which drifts into our house all the time, even when the windows are closed. They also have people coming and going constantly at all hours of the day and night and make all kinds of noise. They have 4 giant dogs, which I have no problem with (I own a couple dogs myself); what I do have a problem with is that they leave the dogs' feces to collect out in their paved backyard and it literally starts to smell almost as bad as the pot smoke that comes into our house at times. These are just a few of the many issues that we have with them.

Where I am looking for some advice is on what we can/should do about it, if anything. When I see them out smoking pot around small kids or setting off their enormous firework displays or doing other illegal things, I am tempted to call the police. However, my wife does not want me to because she does not want to start anything bad with the neighbors for fear that they may retaliate towards us in some way. I used to be in law enforcement and have no problem involving the police and, if necessary, defending myself if they do retaliate in some way for involving the police, but my wife fears for herself and our 3-year old son. I want to respect my wife's wishes, but I also don't want us stuck complaining about how much our neighbors are detracting from our quality of life.

Any advice on how to handle this would be very much appreciated.

  • Rats eat dog feces! Go on the City of Chicago website to request a service (rat baiting). The City will come out to check their property! At least the feces will be cleaned up!

  • Chris T 10 year Lincoln Square/Ravenswood resident.

Looking into Surveillance cameras (CCTV) might make sense. These systems have gotten extremely inexpensive over the last couple of years. You can have a system installed for about the same price (If not less) as a home theater system. Not only would this help if they ever encroach on your property but it could also act as a deterrent.
I know it is a drag to think that you may need CCTV but then again, it is 2014 and we live in the city.

Please. . Help

I am new to living here in Jefferson Park. Had friends over and was asked if they were visiting Tokyo? I have been complaining for months about all the wires hanging in my yard. I called AT&T...Comcast...Com Ed plus my alderman. No one will come here to fix this problem. These wires are hanging so low we all have to step aside as to not get hit in the head. Just a big pile of spaghetti looking, loose or dead wires. They are laying on top of my son's swingset and our garage. Please can anyone help me?

  • Post your detailed account on all of those companies' Facebook pages. They will respond immediately.

  • C Neighbor

For what it's worth, I've heard that tweeting about an issue often gets more/faster/better results than established customer service channels. I'm not on Twitter and have no personal experience, but I've read that big companies have entire staffs monitoring their brand image. Might be worth a tweet @311, @AT&T, @ComEd. Just a thought.

People's Gas shut off my gas

So I had a PG guy come out to do an inspection - he identifies a leak, another guy comes out and shuts off the gas. Says have a contractor open up your wall and a plumber fix the leak and call us when it's all done. WTF? Who do I call? I have no way to cook or dry our laundry :( And People's Gas won't give us any names of companies that could help.

Solutions for gutter drainage?

Hello everyone. I'm in the process of disconnecting our home's gutters/downspouts from the underground tile system. I've heard from some people that this will mitigate the overflow of rainwater that sometimes soaks our basement. My question is, does anyone have any ideas about how to best cap the drainage holes after I redirect the downspouts? Thanks very much in advance!

  • Portage Porker 23 Year Portage Park Resident

That $5 expandable plug will work fine and if you change your mind (or need to rod out the line) you can just pop them right out. We don't have a clean out on our main drain and if there is a problem the guy rods through the front downspout tile. Works every time!

Increase in O'Hare airplane noise and pollution and you, the citizen

I invite you to join the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition, a citizen-led initiative that gathers democratically. We are a rapidly growing coalition of citizens and civics on Chicago's NW side and near NW suburbs.

    What is FAiR about?

FAiR seeks a real voice at O'Hare to secure an equitable distribution of takeoffs and landings, day and night, east and west, and using all existing runways including the diagonals. FAiR is the leading voice for residents on this issue.

    What does FAiR believe?

It is our Coalition's experience that citizens and civic organizations concerned about the severe impact on our communities from increased noise and air pollution occurring as a result of the new October 2013 runway configurations have not had a real seat at the table in the development and implementation of how O'Hare takeoff and landing patterns were designed. FAiR supports the economic engine that is O'Hare, but we believe that as our neighbor, the airport must work with the community to determine when and where those engines fly over our homes, yards, schools, parks and businesses. FAiR's goal is a better future founded upon a real voice for communities and solutions arising out of collaboration between the citizenry and our government. Solutions to these types of challenges are not solely technical in nature but are more importantly democratic in substance.

    What can you do?

As a neighbor, resident and fellow citizen, I ask you to join FAiR at www.fairchicago.org. Then...
Sign our online petition at www.fairchicago.org
Report your noise complaints which can be done directly through our website at www.fairchicago.org
Put up a FAiR yard sign
Tell your neighbors about how our democracy has again been imperiled
Become active with FAiR in your community

Still have questions? Please ask. Jac Charlier - jac.charlier@gmail.com See you around our neighborhood.

  • Hector Anaya Neighbor

I really don't mind the noise. I do think that if ohare plans to allow planes to fly at lower altitude that they should do what midway did and pay to get noise reduction windows for the affected communities. I'll take a look at your petition.

Parkway grass or parkway garden?

My wife and I have been walking the neighborhood regularly for a few years, and we keep seeing so many really great gardens in the parkway areas of our neighborhood. If we decided to go that route (it wouldn't be the whole parkway, we would cordon off the section we'd use, and leave a border of grass around the outside), do we have to notify the city in any way? I would certainly ask my immediate neighbors what they think, but is there anything else we may need to do?

It's just a "principle of the thing" situation...there's a record that I've now called twice in 14 months or so (and will start following up progressively more frequently), so if something does happen (what would happen, who knows?), I can at least point to the fact that I told the city about it and the city didn't get to it.

Truth be told, had I planted the tree (or hired someone to do it) even if it was in the parkway, I'd definitely spend the money on it.

  • I have a neighbor that has planted his parkway space to the gills. It is the poster child for an eyesore as he never weeds it. Ive called the city on him to at least keep it down.. but he is mentally slow so he cant figure out that it looks like $h1t. Eventually the city will get him. Its just slow..

Thuis Playlot @ 4759 N. Lavergne Ave. is being renovated. I'd love to take my kids there since it's so close to our house, but I am deathly afraid of crossing Lawrence at the Lavergne/Lawrence intersection. I honeslty think that the inability to safely cross the street is one of the major reasons this playlot is very underutilized. Anyone have any thoughts on what can be done?

Integrys Energy new fixed customer charge

I was just about to pay my ComEd bill this month and was shocked that it was almost 40% higher than last month! Upon reviewing the bill, I noticed that Integrys Energy Services has now added a month customer charge of $22+ dollars a month. This is the most we have ever paid for a month where we did not run any A/C or heat. Does anyone use ComEd as their supplier instead of Inegrys, is it cheaper, is there an alternative, or are we now stuck with high electric bills from now on?

  • Dennis 25 year Jefferson Park resident

Joanie, you pay for what you use whether monthly or on the budget plan.

  • July 30 at 6;30 pm, the church on Giddings (by the library) there will be someone from Citizens Utility Board at the Jefferson Park Neighbors Association meeting. You don't have to be a member, just come and bring your confounding gas and electric bills.

Blue on Blonde, Part 1: Most Likely You Build Your Way (and I’ll Build Mine)

5710 W. Lawrence Avenue, Portage Park – Chicago. Opened 1964. Vertical window bands, diamond patterned doors and not much else. The gabled roof looks bizarrely out of place, like it landed from another city.

This article has 28 other Chicago locations (Show)

2740 W. Pratt, West Ridge - Chicago. David W. Schultz Co., builder; opened by 1965.

1322 W. Chase Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Opened 1965, by Birger Construction Co., replacing a converted house previously on the site. Birger also did  an apartment building at 7621 N. Sheridan that uses the same corner-pier vocabulary, but in reddish-orange brick.

6116 N. Hermitage Avenue, opened 1964, with studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments; operated at the time by the McCarthy Management Corporation. No word on the builder.

4850-4856 N. Paulina Avenue – opened by 1966, by Luna Construction Co., replacing a house on the site (previously home to a family whose four sons all served in World War I.)

7256 N. Bell, Rogers Park – Chicago. J. & H. Construction Co. buiders, 1967.

7241 N. Claremont Avenue, West Ridge – Chicago. Opened in 1962, replacing a 4-unit apartment building on the same site.

1535 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1968, possibly by 1965.

1631 W. Farwell, Rogers Park – opened in 1964. This site follows a familiar historical arc for the time period – in April 1963, a doctor living at this address passed away. In August, the “old house” and its lot went up for sale for $26,000. Thirteen months later, the new building was ready.

1918 W. Touhy Avenue, Rogers Park – opened 1966. It was under the same rental management as the previous building (1631 Farwell).

1615-17 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago. Doesn’t appear in the classifieds until 1971, which would make it rather a latecomer, but would also perhaps explain the unusual gabled roof.

7555 N. Oakley Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1965, M. Chapelski Construction Co. builders.
