Blackhawk Park Next Door group

If you live in and around the Blackhawk Park area (Fullerton to Armitage, Cicero to Laramie), you are more than welcome to join the neighborhood Nextdoor group.

https://blackhawkpark.nextdoor.com/choose_address/

  • Alonso Born and raised in the Cragin neighborhood.

Ignore the 8 day deadline. I talked to the main organizer for NextDoor a few days ago and she has lifted the deadline for ND's in her area. You can also post it on your FB page and see if others might join. Hopefully we get our 10 members quickly and can start making some much needed changes around here. :)

  • PetParent Founder of Pets Are Like Family

I just joined the group, but it says the group will dissolve in like 8 days if we don't at least 6 more members by then. I signed up to have postcards sent to neighbors, but that won't be quick enough.. I don't have neighbor email addresses. Hope you can get some more folks on board.

Barry and Lockwood has been hit with lots of gang graffiti for the last few months. Please join me in reporting it to 311 or Ald. Juarez.

  • Deb R Fed-up

The Old Advance Garden Center

Does anyone know whats going on where Advance Garden Center used to be (3900 block of Central)? I noticed that they are knocking down the old buildings, and I'm wondering if there are plans to build something new.

  • Portage Porker 23 Year Portage Park Resident

I remember the sign and checked the address they had written on it a couple times. But as far as I know they never reopened there or anywhere else. It's a shame, we usually had great luck with their plants.

  • Deb R Fed-up

I did the same thing, went past that address and it wasn't there. That's why I wondered if it ever opened again.

Two charged after police-involved shooting on Northwest Side

I happened to be driving past this restaurant right when the shooting occurred. I heard POP-POP-POP-POP and my wife was like "Are those gunshots?"

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-two-charged-after-policeinvolved-shooting-on-northwest-side-20140224,0,3155767.story

This is the second shooting I've been around, though thankfully I've never been in danger or witnessed casualties or anything like that. Just proximity.

I would like to apologize in advanced for my rant but I am just so sick and tired of everything that has been going on in my neighborhood as well as many other areas of the city.

I would like to start of by saying I am a 21 year old homebody; I do nothing but go to work and come home on a daily basis. I work retail so I'm required wear a uniform everyday. I never wear any makeup and my hair has been the same way for about 3 years. This winter I have definitely opted for warmth rather than style. I've been wearing a puffy black coat with grey scarf, hat,& gloves and I've been wearing bulky ski boots which my friends and coworkers have laughed at all winter.

With all of that being said, I find it appalling that I cannot go from the bus stop to my home or vise versa without being harassed. The store I work for closes at 8 so the latest I am ever home is at 9:30pm. In this past year, I have come near death about 3 times. On two occasions, I have almost been hit by cars zooming down my street & on one occasion I was footsteps from my home when a car with 4 guys blocked my path. I think they may have confused me for someone else but this is getting ridiculous. Finally, and probably what disgusts me the most, on numerous occasions I have been confused for a prostitute. Now, I know it may sound like I'm a little bit crazy but I have witnessed enough prostitute "drop offs" & "pick ups," for lack of better terms, to know that this is what these pervs wanted.

What the heck is wrong with people?!? Has it really come to this? I have lived in the Belmont-cragin are for a little over 3 years and I seriously don't recall my neighborhood ever being like this. I used to be able to walk from Belmont to Diversey at 3am without being bothered! (I used to work at forever yogurt and they close at like 1am.) ugh, I'm so sorry for the rant but I had to get it off my chest.

  • Momofoku

Where are you going to go? Have a list of other zipcodes? Please share.

  • Thank you for your kind words Stefan and Eye Irritant (cool pseudo by the way). I agree with you guys 100%. It's really unfortunate to see these kinds of people and I really hope things can start changing for the better. I was born and raised in the city of...

Thank you for your kind words Stefan and Eye Irritant (cool pseudo by the way). I agree with you guys 100%. It's really unfortunate to see these kinds of people and I really hope things can start changing for the better. I was born and raised in the city of Chicago and I've always loved it here up until I was old enough to notice everything going on. I always rejected the idea of leaving the city but right about now that's looking pretty good. Anywho, thank you guys...it's nice to know there are still good people out there. Take care! (:
