Don't toss your pumpkins!

Hey guys!

I hope that you're all enjoying this beautiful fall weather we're getting. I was hoping to ask those of you that have pumpkins this year to save a few for me. My chickens LOVE them, and they're a great source of natural fiber, vitamins, calcium, and some even claim that they're a natural de-wormer (though I'm not 100% on that).

If you have a pumpkin that hasn't been chemically treated and you'd like to get rid of it,...

If you have a pumpkin that hasn't been chemically treated and you'd like to get rid of it, please let me know! I'd be happy to take a few off your hands! I roast them, puree them, and add fresh cinnamon (antibacterial and antifungal) and fresh garlic (ant parasitic and antifungal). I keep them in little baggies over the winter and serve them up nice and warm for the girls on those super chilly days. They gobble them right up!

If anyone is interested in donating your old pumpkin after Halloween, just let me know!

Thanks!

  • Sean Creative Strategist and Beer Maker

I'll have a couple large ones. I will want to get rid of them Sunday or Monday before they start to rot.

  • I usually put mine out for the squirrels. Cut them in half and the squirrels have a field day on the seeds, and then eventually munch on the rest. Better than my morning newspaper, which they've been chewing on recently!

Another recommendation for Steve Mancini/Best Price Gutters

We had Steve out this morning to take a look at our gutters and a large metal awning that we wanted removed; his quote was so reasonable that I hired him to take care of them both on the spot. He was efficient, thorough, and genuinely nice. We'll continue to use him and recommend him to anybody who needs small jobs done around the house! You can reach him at 773.507.4415 - he responded to my initial request immediately and was happy to set up a time at my convenience. Can't recommend him enough!

  • I couldn't agree more. Steve and his team have done a few jobs at our home and we couldn't be happier with his work, attitude and prices. Thanks to my Everyblock neighbors for recommending him.

  • Thanks guys

Johnny, since we are talking about ancient history, sorry to disappoint but modern Hungarians are related to Finns not Huns. Hence their language. Oh and Attilla happens to be a Gothic name. Hence its popularity from Finland to Turkey.

That's the point. How can you understand where things come from if you don't know WHERE they came from and HOW they happen to be?

As to the topic: I was reading today this article, http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/Felsenthal-Files/October-2014/Pat-Quinn-Personal-Life/ - far less jaundice than in Stewart's article. And I think explaining more about who Quinn is. We all know that he's a very good legislator and very bad administrator. You can see that in his personal life as well.

As to Rauner - I have an impression that I know who his wife is but I am not voting for his wife, am I? He has had time to present himself, but he chose not to. So, yes I agree with Stewart that Rauner is running a very bad campaign. But I can arrive at this without resorting to partisanship and baseless accusations.

And that's the other point: avoiding stupid partisanship.

I'm still lobbying for a "thanks for nothing" button in Everyblock. I think I would often use it.

Looking for stained glass repair recommendations

I'm familiar with few stores nearby that do stain glass panel/window repairs. I have seen those in my travels. But I need recommendations from people who have paid for such repairs. I've done some stain glass panels myself - but I wouldn't touch this repair... Too tricky for my lack of experience. So I'm looking for an expert that will not make mistakes. Some pieces will have to be refitted (I have all the pieces) and the panel straightened out. Also, likely the framing is at fault, so the panel will have to be re-framed. Any recommendations for a good repair shop?

  • GiGi in Portage Park 15 year resident

You can't go wrong with Fred. He taught me many years ago. He is a very nice guy and fair in his pricing and does the job right. His phone number is 1-773-725-2218 4308 N. Pulaski Rd,opens 10 til 6 is closed between 2and 4. I do a little banking and park in the bank lot kitty corner from him. You will be happy with his work he has designed many a window and repaired many historical windows. His classes are fun.

  • I just wanted to post an update - we decided to go with Drehobl Art Glass. Primarily, because it turns out their company originally made the panels I wanted to repair! It seemed like the right thing to do - to give the panels to be repaired to those who originally made them...:) Not a cheap adventure, but reasonable.

    Thank you all for help!

Any recommends on a thermostat installer?

I don't need to break the bank on what should be a simple install. Fast, Professional, Experience.

  • Al-air on lawrence ave had similar problem in dead of winter, temp was 54 degrees in the house, new programmable thermostat was acting goofy.Only have owner come fix it.read instructions& opened new thermostat to do something inside,Worked fine after that, but took owner a couple days to figure it out, something about 2 wires and 3 wires.therm comes pre wired for one, don't know which one

  • Definitely read the instructions. Programmables generally come set by default for forced air systems, which cycle frequently. Your boiler should be cycling maybe once an hour. The instructions should show how to set up for the cycling for a boiler.

Homelessness does not = criminal. However, being off your meds b/c you are homeless and can't get more might have something to do with it. These three had other run-ins w/ the law that appear to have occurred before they were homeless, b/c the CPD has last known addresses for them and seems to have a lot of info about their past activities. They appear to be bad apples that found each other after they hit bottom on the street. I am sad for the senseless death of another but glad they are out of our neighborhood. Hopefully for a very long time.

When the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Pilot Act was passed last year, the Illinois Departments of Professional Regulation, Agriculture & Public Health began to prepare licensing for dispensary sites throughout Illinois.

Before they open in 2015, the dispensaries must meet all of the state's standards. These standards are the strictest in the country. The patients who qualify for the medical cards are eligible only through their physician's recommendation.

The medication will be reserved for very specific medical conditions, such as ALS or certain cancers. Additionally, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals must approve any applicant who wishes to open a dispensary in the city. 13 potentially dispensary sites are reserved for Chicago, two in Jefferson Township.

However, the final decision on where medical marijuana dispensaries are opened is rendered by the State of Illinois.

Right now, we have two bending ZBA application in Jefferson Park, one at 4758 N. Milwaukee, and one at 4760 1/2 Milwaukee.

I will host a community meeting on the application at 4758 N. Milwaukee at 7 pm Monday, Nov. 3, at the Congregational Church of Jefferson Park, 5320 W. Giddings. Please come out, learn how the applicant plans to operate, and get your questions answered.

Alderman, can you please confirm that it is highly unlikely both of these dispensaries will be approved? Since only two permits are allotted for all of Jefferson Township and there is currently a third application in Old Irving Park, it seems unlikely that the state/city would approve two right next to each other - but I want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

Also, Missy - as others have stated, the Illinois law is very different from the California law. There should be concerns about these places opening, but the concern should not be about the "type of person" who will be legally patronizing these places - rather, we should be concerned about the security measures in place as marijuana dispensaries are still all-cash businesses. I'm much more worried about robberies than the small potential for "marijuana abuse."

 The signer's residence address must be written or printed opposite his or her name and shall include the street address, city and county, except that the City of Chicago and Cook County may be printed on the petition forms. [10 ILCS 5/10-4]
 Each petition signer must, at the time he or she signs the petition, be registered to vote at the address shown opposite his or her signature on the petition.  Petition signers may not sign more than one nominating petition for the same office. [10 ILCS 5/10-3] Circulating petition sheets
 No petition sheet shall be circulated more than 90 days preceding the last day provided by law for filing the petition; therefore, the first day that petition sheets may be circulated for the February 24, 2015 election is Tuesday, August 26, 2014. [10 ILCS 5/10-4]

Good luck to the declared candidates.

  • Where in 10 ILCS 5/10-3 does it state: "Petition signers may not sign more than one nominating petition for the same office?"

It does state that in the 2015 ELECTION INFORMATION PAMPHLET & CALENDAR
SECOND REVISED July 29, 2014, published by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners, referencing 10 ILCS 5/10-3, but I have not found it in the referenced Election Code.

  • Les, I found it at http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/fulltext.asp?DocName=001000050K10-3.
"...each voter may subscribe to one nomination for such office to be filled, and no more: Provided that the name of any candidate whose name may appear in any other place upon the ballot shall not be so added by petition for the same office. "

Mr. G's up for sale?

I left for vacation and come back to find Mr. G's is up for sale. Every time we visited this diner, they seemed to have a pretty steady clientele. I was surprised to see it closed and up for sale. Did anything happen, or was it just time to retire? It's really too bad. They had an excellent Irish Breakfast :(

@PP46, not in the part of the country I'm from. We usually just call it a Fry, as in "come on up to the house in the morning and we'll have a Fry to cure what ails ye" (normally said after a long night at the local pub). Jimmy Mac's version is an appropriate American colloquialism, one which I've used many times myself to describe it to the uninitiated.

It should also be note that most Irish in Ireland don't eat like that very often. My family usually considers it a special breakfast, like when family comes back home from America to visit. One of the many reasons my visits back aren't as frequent as I'd like.
