Concrete Stair Repair Recommendations?

The concrete stairs in front of my bungalow that lead to the front door started to crumble towards the sides on a few of the steps and i am hoping to have them repaired before the winter hits and hopefully in such a way that shoveling and salting them doesn't make them crumble again.

Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone that could help fix our stairs?

  • We were given a price for all that work together, and I don't remember how much it was just for the stairs. I want to say that the steps were in the $1000-$1200 range. I'm sure that includes a bit of a break given the fact that we were getting a number of other things done as well.

  • Also, they kept the existing landing/platform. It would have been considerably more if we had replaced the entire thing.

We would like to have a garage sale in the next few weeks, but don't know the basics. Do we need a permit or anything else? I did a search on EB and all I could find it people listing their garage sales. Thanks in advance :-)

  • you are supposed to have a permit, you can get it at the alderman's office.

then post some of the key items

neon signs are good, but remember to take them down

Little Intruders in my home

Sorry I didnt know what to put this topic under
So my house has a visitor aka a mouse. I am wondering if other residents in Jefferson Park are having the same problem. I know a few weeks ago we had a huge mouse come in but that was because we had the basement back door open for fresh air (so much for fresh air) for a short period of time. If you can tell me if you have had these problems recently or in the past and tips to remove them. Thanks!

And Ill be searching my home for any new entry ways as well.

Sears won't survive past 2016?

Here is an excerpt from yesterday's article in Crain's Chicago

Fitch Ratings today downgraded Sears Holdings Corp.'s credit rating to CC from CCC, a move driven by the retailer's continuing decline in profitability and the rate at which it's burning through cash. The agency warned that Sears may not have enough funding to support operations beyond 2016.

If Sears goes down, what will happen to Six Corners? I don't love the big ugly building and rarely shop at Sears, but it'll be exponentially worse if the store closes.

  • joanie Resident of Jefferson Park

What's unique about Sears is their Craftsman brand of tools and guarantees. I've had great service from the Kenmore appliances that I've purchased. I like the "Land's End" clothing line for plus size and tall women. The rest of their clothing not so much. I would miss Sears if they closed. I shop at the Target next to O'Hare. I probably wouldn't shop at one located in Six Corners.

  • @joanie,

    @joanie,

most craftsman tools used to be made in the usa, now most are made overseas. the lifetime warranty is not a big selling point as places like harbor freight and lowes offer similar warranties on their hand tool brands. actually more tool brands offer a warranty, but must be sent in.

in the old days I would break a socket go to sears and get another one right away. the last two times I went they were out of stock. I think one socket was a 13mm and the other a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor. they had to order it online to take care of the warranty and it was shipped to me, but I needed the tools to finish the project. the 13mm I borrowed from a neighbor and the adaptor I got at harbor freight. my neighbor had a 1/2 socket break, same thing happened we walked over there, they did not have it and ordered it online and mailed it to him.

I do like Kenmore and have a dishwasher that washes good, but the panel started coming apart after the warranty, you can't just buy the stick on panel part, it is the whole assembly for about $150, it will just have to look the way it does til it dies.
Kenmore is not what it used to be thou.

I used to shop for clothing at sears, but not so much anymore. I got some great long sleeve shirts last winter that was on clearance and used my shop your way points.

sometimes they will have a sale plus a % off for ordering online that you can pick up in store and use your rewards points. I ended up getting a craftsman pole saw for like $14.

La Margarita Mexican Restaurant - YUM!

The hubby and I decided to check out this new addition to the neighborhood tonight. We were there around 8:00 p.m. and there were 2 other couples eating in. We were greeted at the door and told to sit wherever we liked. There was plenty of seating, so we grabbed one of the 4 tops.

The hubby and I decided to check out this new addition to the neighborhood tonight. We were there around 8:00 p.m. and there were 2 other couples eating in. We were greeted at the door and told to sit wherever we liked. There was plenty of seating, so we grabbed one of the 4 tops.

The menu was very simple. It's just a paper menu (not sure if this will change in the future) and had the basics covered - tacos, tortas, quesadillas, burritos, carne asada, enchiladas, and a few other items.

The waiter, George, introduced himself and brought us some chips with red and green salsas. They were both terrific. In fact, I could have eaten the green salsa with a spoon. Fresh, obviously homemade, not overly spicy, but just perfect.

I had the carne asada dinner and the hubby had the 2 taco dinner. Each came with rice and beans, and each was $4.99 (what a steal!).

It only took about 10 minutes for our order to come out, and everything was piping hot. My carne asada was super tender, and cooked to perfection. Mexican places sometimes have a habit of overcooking, but not tonight!

I tried both of the tacos the hubs had. One was steak, and it was terrific, but I was more surprised by the chorizo taco he had. I don't usually like chorizo because it's so greasy, but this one wasn't at all. It was actually really delicious.

The rice and beans were great, and we both (surprisingly) polished off our plates.

At the end of the meal, our total with a Coke and 2 full dinners plus tax came to just over $12. WHAT?! I've spent more than that at a fast food place!

To sum it up, I'll be back. I'll probably be back a lot. George was very nice, and asked us to please spread the word, so I'll be posting this review on Yelp as well. I was 100% satisfied (which, if you know me, you know isn't easy to accomplish).

I hope that you, as neighbors, will give this place a chance. They obviously worked hard to make this restaurant work, and they deserve a shot.

  • Went in for the $1 tacos. I think the $1 tacos are smaller then the regular tacos on other nights...unless my eyes were deceiving me! And you can never have enough cheese! They do charge $0.50 a taco for cheese. Might just go to Family Fruit Market and stock up on chiuchiu cheese and keep getting the $1 tacos though.

I am extremely disappointed that the Federal Aviation Administration has decided to ignore pleas from three members of Congress, dozens of aldermen and suburban elected officials, and thousands of resident to complete a new environmental impact study on the impacts of the O'Hare Modernization Plan.

The O'Hare Modernization Plan, which was first proposed over a decade ago, was approved at the local, state and federal level. It appears that residents did not have the correct data to judge the impact of the plan. Additionally, none of the public meetings were located in areas impacted by the changes.

Despite this, the FAA Administrator has the audacity to call the process "one of the most comprehensive" ever conducted. I could not disagree more. Any process that seems designed to shut out public input is not legitimate.

I will continue to support the efforts of U.S. Reps. Mike Quigley, Tammy Duckworth, and Jan Schakowsky to bring about new FAA hearings into the our aircraft noise issues and the modernization plan.

In the mean time, I attend every O'Hare Noise Compatibility Commission (ONCC) meeting and support the commission working toward solutions such as an expansion of the 'fly quiet' program by the Chicago Department of Aviation, more noise monitors on the far Northwest Side, and the inclusion of more residential homes in the O'Hare noise abatement program.

I will continue to strongly advocate for those solutions.

The ONCC monitors and tracks complaints made by residents within communities impacted by the airport and air traffic overhead. I encourage you to log your aircraft noise complaints through the city's website.

https://servicerequest.cityofchicago.org/web_intake_chic/Controller?op=csrform&restrict_loc=Y&invSRType=AVN

The complaints will be used for future discussions with the ONCC, FAA, and Chicago Department of Aviation. Please do not hesitate to contact my office should you have further questions regarding this issue.

@Inactive User - That would be cool if that were indeed the case. At the end of the day, the best way to think about all of these measures, save one, is that they do not provide a solution to the massive increase in planes, sound and pollution. Those items being noise monitors, sound proofing and a change in the DNL (lower than 65). All of these are important but only an equitable distribution of flight paths and Fly Quiet (much less so) will actually reduce the planes and hence the noise and pollution levels.

Lost a gift card in Mariano's lot- Sunday morning

This is a long shot but I've got my fingers crossed...
My husband went to Mariano's on Elston this morning at 10:00am and in addition to groceries, bought a $25 Toys R Us gift card. He loaded the car and when he got home, realized the little brown Hallmark bag with his receipts and the gift card were not there. We're thinking it slipped out of our bags into the cart or onto the ground.
If anyone found it, can you please contact me? We've already called Mariano's but it hasn't turned up.
Thank you!

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

I wonder if Mariano's keeps a record of gift cards, or if your credit card company could help--cancel it or something. Do you still have your store receipt?

  • Jen

Unfortunately, the store receipt was in the same bag as the gift card.
I think this one gets chalked up to being in a hurry and learning a lesson.

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

What I wanted to be bring out is that a lot of people are distracted these days either on the cell or other devices. The criminals target these people. I am always aware of my surroundings when walking my dog and get involved by telling young girls to do the same when I see them on their cell phones. There is definitely more crime now, in the Els, in the streets and even in your home. I won't carry a gun but I will probably carry good old MACE. Does anyone know where I could get some from a store without buying it on the internet. Beware aware of your surroundings and please teach your kids the same thing. When my kids were little, we always had a code name if someone is trying to pick them up anywhere. If they don't know it, I told them.to run like hell. Eventhough it was a lot safer back then, it was always good to teach your kids about being street smart. The same goes for now in these dangerous times. I am hoping that parents and the schools are doing tha same. Better to be safe then sorry.

A Trojan Horse Comes to Jefferson Park

While 45th Ward Alderman promises his "Pedestrian Street" designation will limit curb cuts and prevent strip malls, he doesn't clearly define what the trade-off is with such a legal designation as "Pedestrian Street". The trade-off could include efficiency apartments of less than 200 square feet, and with greatly reduced parking requirements that come with the "Pedestrian Street" designation.

2 "pop" sounds and glass breaking

Did anybody else hear 2 pop sounds and glass breaking around 9:40pm near Argyle and LeClaire? I've never heard gunshots before, but it sounded concerning, so I called 911. The sound of glass breaking is enough for me to call. Never know.
