Central Kitchen and Tap closed

CKT put up signs that they'd be "closed for renovations" which sounded fishy to me. Today, realtor signs went up in the windows. Very bummed about this. What a cool neighborhood spot.

For years Central Kitchen and Tap was a single business model but the neighbors did not support it enough. Prior to closing this restaurant it seems as though the owner added the late night bar to try and stay open, I'm guessing. Because the area did not support a family restaurant it has closed. I always enjoyed the pot roast sandwich and the friendly atmosphere for my family. Kids were welcomed there and loved the soft serve too. I had hopes that Jefferson Park would support this family restaurant but I was wrong. So now I have to take my family to another area for good food because Pete serves greasy food. Petes is "meh". People who are worried about free pop should eat at McDonalds!!! Now you can look at the empty restaurant. Are you happy?

  • seems like a lot of people went there for sandwiches.

maybe someone should open a sandwich shop.

i am thinking like a heros type thing with more seating and carry out.

or go with like Panera style where you can get a soup and sandwich or salad

It's a shame with all the sponsors they had they felt the need to nickel & dime everybody. The websites I seen did not mention $5 for this and $10 for that. Fishy indeed. They should make their money on food & booze not kid stuff. Pretty sad. :(

I was pretty sure I saw the kids' area advertised at $5 in Nadig and on DNAInfo, but sucked it up and paid the $10. One of the duck games was $3 to pick one duck. ONE. We both couldn't believe what we shelled out compared to previous years, and we agreed this is probably our last year attending...way, way too much money for a neighborhood festival.

I like the grab n go bakery and smoothies, too. I agree that the decor is clean, but sparse, and that they oftentimes seem to need an additional server. It's ultimately a diner, not an upscale restaurant. I have no real complaints. Glad to have them in the neighborhood. If they are not to your liking, there is also Yellow Rose.

I'll agree service can be a little slow when they have a full house (which has been the case every time I have gone), but not really any worse than any other restaurant I have been to. I have only been there for brunch and I personally only ever had breakfast. Since it IS a pancake house... I'm thinking if most of you that are complaining had them, you would be happier. I was curious to know if anyone in the 38th ward was able to attend the FAiR O'Hare Noise Complaint tax appeal workshop earlier in the week? I will definitely be appealing my property taxes citing the jet noise and contamination to our quality of life. I was curious if anyone in my ward is able to give some tips learned at the workshop? I know the website says to provide documentation such as the OMP map of the new runway, recent published articles about the impact on the community, a drafted resolution or letter of support from Ald. Cullerton, and a copies of articles regarding the questionable FAA hearings and lack of/ false information provided to residents. I can also provide video or photos of the actual planes over my home.

Is there anything else that should be provided?
Is it better to appeal via the The Board of Review or the Assessor’s Office?
Has anyone had luck asking Ald. Cullerton to support them in this endeavor?

Any help would be appreciated! I would like to start the process sooner than later. Deadline is Sept 4th.

The best documentation, if I interpret the appeals process correctly, is to document a decline of property values in the area, and for that one might have to do one's homework with the numbers on the recent sales of any houses comparable to your own, since that is the numerical basis for taxes. My friend the real estate agent helped me determine the value of my own condo that way, so if you know an agent who has access to those stats, which they call the 'comps,' they could provide them to you. I think you have to prove the actual value of your home has declined, not one's quality of life, although certainly they're related. You probably WILL find the value has declined--everybody else in Chicago has! I successfully appealed two years ago.Look up the paperwork online, or go down to city hall and get the paperwork (they're nice and it's easy), and the questions asked on the form will give you a guide, in addition to photos and so forth. Do persist, not only for the noise, but for the decline from lots of other reasons.

Phone scam - don't be a victim

The Internal Revenue Service issued a consumer alert today providing taxpayers with additional tips to protect themselves from telephone scam artists calling and pretending to be with the IRS.
These callers may demand money or may say you have a refund due and try to trick you into sharing private information. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may know a lot about you, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. If you don't answer, they often leave an "urgent" callback request.

The IRS reminds people that they can know pretty easily when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS will never:

1. Call you about taxes you owe without first mailing you an official notice.
2. Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
4. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
5. Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money, here's what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS workers can help you with a payment issue.
If you know you don't owe taxes or have no reason to believe that you do, report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) at 1.800.366.4484 or at www.tigta.gov.
If you've been targeted by this scam, also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their "FTC Complaint Assistant" at FTC.gov. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.

Looking for stained glass repair recommendations

I'm familiar with few stores nearby that do stain glass panel/window repairs. I have seen those in my travels. But I need recommendations from people who have paid for such repairs. I've done some stain glass panels myself - but I wouldn't touch this repair... Too tricky for my lack of experience. So I'm looking for an expert that will not make mistakes. Some pieces will have to be refitted (I have all the pieces) and the panel straightened out. Also, likely the framing is at fault, so the panel will have to be re-framed. Any recommendations for a good repair shop?

They mention on their website that they have some antique glass sheets. If you want the repaired piece to match exactly, that's important because some of the glass just isn't made anymore. (I've looked everywhere, and I can't find the clear pattern in mine anywhere.)

When I finally get around to getting my stained glass windows repaired, I'm taking them there. (Or a shop in Plainfield, which I imagine is further than you'd want to go.)

Fishing is one of my absolute favorite things to do, and since I eat fish or seafood 2-3 times a week, it would be nice to take a few home to clean and cook up. Does anyone here have a favorite fishing spot? Any insider tips on fishing local waters? I have only ever spent "reel" time trying for bass and pan fish up at our cottage in Wisconsin and spent my childhood fishing for cats, bass, and 'gills down South. I know there are pike, muskie, crappie, and other varieties in the waters up here though. I'd like to try for some of the bigger boys once in awhile.

I'll be attending the fishing derby this weekend at Busse Woods, and think it's a great opportunity to get a feel for the waters here. Anyone have luck over there? The Derby is taking place at Grove 25, but there are SO MANY other areas to fish.

Have a favorite spot? A lure you swear by? Please share!!

Chicago aldermen endorse higher phone fees

I just read this article and states "With a solid majority of the 50 aldermen signed on.." I have to ask if Alderman John Arena and Alderman Cullerton are apart of the "solid majority" to add yet another "fee" on the citizens of Chicago?

I'm sorry, but I know I'm no the only person who is getting tired of being nickle-and-dimed to death from the city I used to really love.

We remodeled our kitchen a couple of years ago and we used American Flooring and Countertops in Niles for our kitchen granite. Typically with a minimum of 25 sqft, they have pretty good deal. They did a great job. Only hiccup was they wrote down the wrong sink spec. We ordered a single deep basin since it was a corner cabinet/sink and they wrote it up as a double basin, which is wider. We noticed this on the day of the install. The sales rep came out to verify the situation and once he realized that the sink was ordered wrong, he had new granite cut for the correct sink and they were back out within two days to complete the install.

If you are looking for a small amount of granite (less than 25 sqft) you may want to check out AMF Brothers in Franklin Park. We used them for our basement bathroom. They resell their remnants/cut offs. Only downside is that the selection can be limited.

We actually used Studio 41 (Pulaski location, talk to Sergey) for our cabinets. We purchased Cardell which are semi-custom. We caught them on a special and saved a ton of money. Great quality and construction.

The reason we split up our purchases was due to price. As a project manager for a local architectural firm I did an extensive pricing exercise soliciting numerous quotes based on our plans. At the end of the day we saved money by splitting up the cabinet and granite purchases.
