45th Ward "Debates" Tonight

OMG, you guys see how many mouthbreathers were there tonight? Seats downstairs were about 2/3rds full and there had to have been at least a hundred. Droves of satin blackhawks jackets and Payless dirty gymshoes. What's happened to this Ward? Where did the class go to? Niles and Morton Grove?

  • @pac52us, were your born/raised in Chicago?

  • Pac52, you're bringing eminent domain into the conversation to make your point now? Did you ever buy a plot of land and have the state send you a letter saying they're making it a highway? Nothing spells "happiness" like tripling the value you paid, eh?

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

Those of you who are still talking/texting on your cell phone while driving, in spite of it being illegal for more than a year, would you please explain your reasoning? I'm just curious.

Hi there neighbors! We are looking to adopt a puppy next month and I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion or past experiences to draw upon to help me decide where to adopt. Here are a few facts about us:

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Thank you!

Thanks Chris! There have been some amazing recommendations here, and I sure have a TON to think about. I'm soooo excited! I am hoping to get my puppy for (or around) Valentine's Day, so I'll keep you posted! Who knows, I'll probably fall in love with a pit/lab mix. Wouldn't that be something?! LOL.

You've all been incredibly helpful and I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate your insight and involvement in this process. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

  • I think that Rygar gets it. Consolidation is probably the reality of this program, but it is not the point of the program. The point is to honestly try to maximize the resources in the area to make really great Catholic schools, rather than just fewer of them. It reflects a perspective broader than just your parish or my parish. I believe that if people approach it with that framework in mind we can create something that is really terrific.

I asked to see how much he would take for it and said $275, I asked if he could do better on the price since it was way over list (msrp was like 190). he said that was the price, if I wanted it, it was $275.

City of Chicago: Integrys Electric Aggregation Program

I'm aware there has been much discussion regarding this program, I originally opted for the program and a year later later opted out. Yesterday, I received a letter from Integrys stating that if I don't opt-out by January 30, 2015 I'm automatically re-enrolled. I was surprised by this auto-enrollment, interesting.

  • There has also been discussion regarding the $7.95 monthly customer charge that Integrys instills on everyone.

  • That is a good point, there may be additional fees from Integrys that push your bill higher. I was strictly focused on actual supply charges.

Vacant St. Cornelius Convent May Become Senior Living Facility, Pastor Says

The staff of St. Cornelius believes leasing the convent and transforming it into senior housing would be a "real plus for our parish," said the Rev. Dan Fallon, the pastor of St. Cornelius, 5430 W. Foster Ave.

This article has 2 other Chicago locations (Show)

The former convent at Our Lady of Victory Church, 5212 W. Agatite Ave., has been vacant since several priests from the Legionnaires of Christ religious order moved out last year.

A proposal to transform the former convent at St. Pascal Church, 6143 W. Irving Park Road, into a home for new mothers struggling to get on their feet that has drawn fierce community opposition is expected to be considered by city officials in March, said Ald. Tim Cullerton (38th).

Stinky basement foul smell moving through house?

I noticed a smell in my basement a few weeks ago. I really just thought it was a dead mouse / rat since we have that issue going on. So I have been looking for a dead decaying rodent. No luck.

I read on here that the smell may be coming from the floor drain pipes? Can anyone give me more information. The smell is starting to reach the living room and kitchen in the past weeks. Thanks

  • p-trap is below the wash tub. It holds water in it so air doesn't flow from the drain pipes in the floor up into the basement. If the p-trap becomes empty in a week it's probably leaking at it's base. turn the water on in the sink for a minute. Put a bunch of toilet paper right under the p-trap. Come back the next day or two and see if the toilet paper is wet.

  • Mmm easy enough. Thanks!

Jefferson Park Transit Center To Get $25M Renovation

The $25 million renovation of the transit center at 4917 N. Milwaukee Ave. — which includes stops for nearly a dozen buses, the Chicago Transit Authority's Blue Line and Metra's Union Pacific Northwest Line, is expected to include an improved bus turn-around, new canopies, lighting, escalators and stairs, officials said.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150123/jefferson-park/jefferson-park-transit-center-renovation-get-5m-from-tif-districts

The Renovation will be funded in part by $5M from the Jefferson Park and Portage Park TIF Districts.

During the station renovation, a new crosswalk will be installed across Milwaukee Avenue, Brugh said. Plans for the crosswalk have been in the works since May 2013, when 45th Ward residents set aside $125,000 of Arena's discretionary budget for the project.

  • There have been more than a few times when I've seen a rat here and there crossing over the railroad tracks upstairs by Metra. The problem has not gone away. Can someone please take ownership and fix this problem please?

  • Whats wrong with rats on the railroad property? There's deer too.

Lavergne blocked at Montrose

I probably have missed the reasoning for this, but I'd really love to know how you have the juice to close down a street just to park your crane? I see no work being done in the spot, yet the crane sits there between two sets of fencing?

It has drastically reduced the ridiculous amount of cut-through traffic in the neighborhood though. That has been a welcome relief.

A truck driver was driving along on! the freeway. A sign comes up that reads,
"Low bridge ahead." Before he knows it, the bridge is right ahead of him and
he gets stuck under the bridge. Cars are backed up for miles. Finally, a
police car comes up. The cop gets out of his car and walks around to the
truck driver, puts his hands on his hips and says, "Got stuck, huh?"
The truck driver says, "No, I was delivering this bridge and ran out of gas."

I have seen only two threads asking for good quality meats and veggies. I see far more complaints about how much low quality food costs. Including one about finding cheaper meat compared to jewel. You get what you pay for. We get ours from the family farms that come to the farmers market. All of the meat is ethically raised and processed. The costs are only slightly higher. A pound of chicken runs $6-$7. The veggies are non-gmo and little or no pesticide.

Whole foods step 4 is also a good choice. However, even step one is far better quality compared to jewel. The up front cost to switch to non-gmo and organic food was costly. Now that it's done our food bills are very reasonable.

"That's no good" sighs Arthur. "Your brother's a hundred and three. He can't help."

"He may be a hundred and three", says the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."

So the next day Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and squints down the fairway.

He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you see the ball?"

"Of course I did!"

"Where did it go?" says Arthur.

Great Indian food in Jeff Park/Portage Park

Any recommendations? I know of great ones outside of the neighborhood but would love closer to us.
