Copernicus re Complete Streets Project

Q: The Milwaukee Av CSP is intended to make Milw safer for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists. Under consideration for the project is the removal of 1 lane of traffic in each direction. How can this project best achieve its goal?

Garrido: "So, I live in GP. So this project would definitely directly impact my neighborhood and our community. When we heard that one of the possibilities was to remove a lane of traffic from Milw Av, we knew immediately that that's something we didn't want to do in our community & we didn't want to wait and sit on the sidelines because we know we learned from the past that once city gov't comes & says "Here's the project", it's very, very difficult to undo. So I initiated, I drafted, a petition, myself together with members of the community & the GPCC, we passed that petition & we gathered 4,000 signatures from people from the GP community and beyond that said "we don't want to remove a lane of traffic". We support the CSP, Milw Av needs it, it's a mess, absolutely, we want everything that comes with it, bumpouts, medians in the center, we want all of that but we do not want to remove a lane of traffic. And,he fought us all the way, every single time we tried to talk to him about it, he didn't want to sit down, he didn't want to meet. So thankfully, because of our petition, we were successful and they took out the possibility of the protected bike lanes, but on the table is still unless he's saying now, here today, that they are not going to remove a lane of traffic, that would be great."

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question: How
can this project best achieve its goal (safety for all)?

What does John Garrido say?
so I initated, I drafted, a petition
We want bumpouts, we want medians, We support Complete Streets

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? No
Mission accomplished.

I grew up there and saw it go from middle class homes and 2-3 flats into a hell that made us leave. Then, it gentrified with larger condos and conversions into upper middle class. Baking soda is a good gentle tool to clean dirt of the counters, to cut grease, remove stains, that sort of thing. But one shouldn't NEUTRALIZE it by adding vinegar to it.

Vinegar is a good cleaning tool but it's acidic. Acids are not good for cleaning tiles, stones, and may have some corrosive abilities (metal). Of course mix it with baking soda and it's no longer vinegar. So no danger, just useless.

Home made cleaning products - yes a good idea. But no guarantee that the product one makes is 1) effective, 2) not dangerous.

As to Barkeeper's friend - it contains oxalic acid, that's the active ingredient. Because it's relatively concentrated some people will get peeling skin from using it. It should not be used on stone, marble, metal (especially not pewter). Is it relatively safe? Yes. It's better than many other scouring agents on the market. It doesn't accumulate and therefore it's considered good ecological cleaning agent. However, oxalic acid AND bleach can cause chlorine gas to be released. SO DO NOT MIX these 2. Especially if you have asthmatic in your household.

Another scouring agent that is widely available and is relatively safe is Bon Ami.

Are you sure John Garrido is not a republican? Sure Seems Like he is!!

Not sure how he can say he is a independent when the Liberty Principles PAC(a republican super PAC) is paying for his tv ad's. The photo attached proves that point.

His tv ad.
http://www.soundvideoimpressions.com/svi_approvals/approval2.php?pid=997711001427556887

He also donated $300 to them for the Illinois republican party in 2011. As Garrido stated in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoXrC85bktM HE IS REPUBLICAN.

It doesn't matter if the aldermanic position is non-partisan as a republican your views are conservative and that is how you will evaluate proposals put infont of you.

Update given on Gladstone Plaza; urgent care facility to open; AT&T, Supercuts also interested

About 35 people attended a March 31 community meeting hosted by Ald. Arena on a zoning change for Gladstone Plaza at NW Hwy and Foster. Plans call for the elimination of the drive-through lane for the former Popeye's Chicken there and for 10 additional parking spaces. A medical urgent care facility, Immediate MD, is set to open there this spring, and Potbelly and AT & T have expressed interest in the former Popeye's building but the phone company is "most likely" to get that space, according to a project official. Supercuts also is interested in the main building in the center. http://nadignewspapers.com/2015/03/25/gladstone-plaza-meeting-set/

What does John Garrido put in writing about his stance on LGBTQ issues?

"{crickets}"

why is Republican John Garrido hesitant to put his views on this issue in writing? His volunteers and surrogates tell us that Mr Garrido must be to busy to put his response to this issue in writing. Perhaps Mr Garrido could tape his response and then any of the surrogates could transcribe his response for the written record.

We will be discussing the renovation of the long-derelict Gladstone Plaza, Northwest Highway and Foster, continues. The owners, ReVision Group, are recruiting more tenants to join ImmediateMD in the plaza.

ReVision plans for bring a quick-service restaurant and a retail store to the location. However, to do so, they will need to change the zoning from M1-1 to B3-1.
I hope you'll join me there.

The smoker is a Traeger Junior Elite, so it uses wood pellets rather than actual wood. I looked around online, and couldn't find anywhere around here that sells wood pellets for smokers. I ended up ordering the Traeger brand pellets from Amazon, but $25 for 20 lbs of pellets is going to get expensive really fast.

Does anyone around here have a wood pellet smoker? Where do you buy your pellets from?

Also, does anyone around the neighborhood do any smoking? I'd love to hear some recipes! I have a feeling I'll be trying to smoke anything that I can fit into the contraption for awhile LOL.

Thanks!

Dennis- what type of wood pellet do you find gives the heaviest smoke flavor? I've only used Hickory thus far, but didn't feel that my dishes had quite enough smoke to them.

Gabrielle- I'll certainly look into those classes, AND Groupon! I love a good deal!

John Garrido is Following His Own Tea Party Election Strategy

John Garrido (candidate for 45th Ward Alderman) says Tea Party candidates like himself need to hide as "Independents" in order to get elected in Chicago:

http://www.chicagotalks.org/2011/01/an-examination-of-the-tea-party-movement/

Branded as extremists, crazies and “tea baggers,” many individuals affiliated with the party believe the movement would stand a better chance if deemed something else. The heavily rooted negative connotations that accompany the Tea Party has undeniably affected its progress.

“In order to go in and actually win races, we’re going to have to run candidates who appeal to all voters. It has to be more of an independent thing,” said Garrido.

Think about walkability when voting in the 45th

People in Gladstone Park aren't making a conscious choice to drive.

Have you ever considered walking to do your errands? Unlikely. Why? JP is built cars first, everyone else second.

Have you ever considered walking to do your errands? Unlikely. Why? JP is built cars first, everyone else second.

If you live a block north of Milwaukee/Central: would you walk to Walgreen’s one block away?

If you’re like most people, no way. On Milwaukee, there’s 8 lanes of moving traffic, and on Central, there’s 5 lanes of moving traffic. The walk _feels_ unsafe because the traffic moves so quickly, even more unsafe for kids and elderly.

Consider another intersection in Jefferson Park: Milwaukee/Lawrence. Would you walk to CVS if you lived one block west near the Jefferson Park library?

At least you'd consider it. Milwaukee near Lawrence has 4 lanes of moving traffic and Lawrence has only 5 lanes of moving traffic. Yes, it’s a not pleasant walk, but it doesn’t _feel_ unsafe.

The secret that candidates opposing the traffic safety measures did not tell you is that there are _more cars per day_ on other sections of Milwaukee with _fewer lanes_.

Near Lawrence on Milwaukee, there are 27,600 average daily vehicles according to CDOT. In the heart of the road diet area near Milwaukee and Bryn Mawr, there are only 13,500 average daily vehicles, according to IDOT.

An area with half the vehicles does not need more lanes - it encourages speeding and recklessness.

A different study from CDOT showed that 75% of vehicles were speeding on Milwaukee, north of Central. Cars feel safe going too fast because they can swerve. This reinforces your default choice to drive because it _feels_ unsafe to cross or walk near Milwaukee.

We need more intersections like the imperfect Milwaukee/Lawrence and fewer like Milwaukee/Central. We should have the _choice_ to walk.

We have a choice to support someone who will allow the neighborhood to be more walkable.

If you agree, vote accordingly.

Completely agree Ryan. I did write the inflammatory "loud vehicular minority" in a spurt of passion. What I meant by that, is the people who basically shut down any premise to create mixed use streets. The "streets are for cars" crowd. It's all about balance, I prefer to walk, take public transit and cycle but I also own a car and use it when I need to. Many of us are multi modal, even those who prefer to drive are still pedestrians whether they like it or not when they have to cross the street on foot.

  • I think that more than visual is a visceral experience is in order, a bus trip to a place with similar zoning and density but which has addressed the "complete" in complete streets.

Second, we do need to address this quilt of angle streets that are a remnant of past days. Either we embrace their quirkiness and reduce traffic on them or realign them

Third, exposure to ideas, like the various cable tv remodeling programs that gin up homeowners dreams.

Downtown Jefferson Park

I cross posted this on the JPNA facebook site, but wanted input here. What would you like to see in downtown Jefferson Park? It could be anything - stores, restaurants, residential, parks, bike lanes, anything. Downtown is ill defined but for this purpose let's assume it centers around Milwaukee and Lawrence and extends east to the Kennedy Expressway, west to Central Avenue, north to the Metra bridge on Milwaukee and south to Wilson Park. Any ideas?

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you from the 48 unit apartment building at the end of you block. How will you feel laying out to get some sun, or your kids playing in the splash pool? Never going to happen on your block, maybe not, but would you wish that on anybody? John Arena loves density, and if there is an empty lot or tired old commercial building, a closed church nearby, you are extremely vulnerable. Our old alderman's "spot zoning" was bad enough, but Arena is bad up-zoning on steroids. Before you vote, ask yourself, COULD YOU BE NEXT?

Fred I have been non-union and am now union. Sometimes I get stuck going to a non-union jobs. The difference is night and day. The last big non-union job I had to work on was junk. Two weeks prior someone died due to improper safety requirements. The workmanship was the worst I have ever seen, and the jobsite was a disaster. It was very similar when I worked non-union. Build it cheap, pocket what they could at the expense of labor and quality. Everyone seems to want to blame unions without truly understanding the good that is created by having them around. A few misguided people ruin it for the rest of us.

The last big union job was downtown. Northwestern memorial hospital. Zero injuries, zero deaths. Organized jobsite, large safety team and a building that will last longer than I will be alive. We build what we are required to build. You want cheap? We can do that. Although, we suggest you don't.

Btw unions built many buildings downtown you enjoy to this day.

In the future if you have an issue that will be decided at the ward level, than please only post it to the ward thread. Posting in multiple places weakens your argument and invites confusion.

    Thanks

What does John Garrido say about Long & Argyle?

Copernicus2 re Long & Argyle

Question: "One of the most hotly debated issues in the ward over the past year has been the proposed 48 unit apartment building at Long & Argyle near the Jefferson Park Metra station. In letters distributed in the neighborhood, Ald Arena charged that his opponent, John Garrido, has made the issue political. Meanwhile, John Garrido has criticized Ald Arena's zoning review process. Will each candidate please elaborate and discuss his vision for the site?

Garrido: "So the letter says I made it political. The residents of thatcommunity found out about the project when it was leaked out in the Nadig newspaper, they didn't find out about it from the Alderman. The Alderman himself admitted that he was aware that there were proposals coming in as much as a year before it finally came out in the Nadig newspaper. 1,500 people signed a petition against this project, that's why it got tabled not because of any other reason. He states in his letter that he had a zoning meeting, one of his secret zoning meetings, that nobody's really quite sure who's on the board and when they happen. So, these are the reasons why people get aggravated. I'm not making this political, I had nothing to do with passing that petition around to get those signatures. It's just another example of how he doesn't really, ..
he says that he includes the community but he really doesn't include the community. The community finds out about these projects either being leaked out or they start to, where people start getting signatures on petitions and then finally, maybe he'll have a community meeting, maybe. There still hasn't been a community meeting about this. So the difference is that when I'm in office I will put any proposal, immediately make it available to the community within the first 24 hours. And that's so everybody knows about it. ....

Barry returns from the doctor's surgery one day and informs his wife that the doctor has told him he only has 24hrs to live. As she wipes away her tears Barry asks if they can make love. "Of course my darling", and they are at it for 6 hours. A few hours later Barry asks if he can give her another one as he only has 15 hours to live. Once again she agrees and of they go again for another hour. A little later they are getting into bed when Barry realised he only had 8 hours to live. He touched his wife's shoulder and said "Honey? Please? Just one more time before i die". She agreed then afterwards rolled over exhausted and fell asleep. Barry however, heard the old clock ticking in his head, and he tossed and he turned until he was down to only 4 more hours. He tapped his wife on the shoulder to wake her up. "Honey i only have 4 hours left! Could we...?"
His wife sat up angrily, turned to him and said, "Listen Barry, i have to get up in the dam morning! you don't."

  • A mother was teaching her child about the side-effects of alcohol.
She gets two short glasses, filling one with water and the other with whiskey.
She says "I want you to see this." She puts a worm in the water, and it swims around.
She puts a worm in the whiskey, and the worm dies immediately.
She then says, feeling that she has made her point clear, "what do you have to say about this experiment?"
The child responds by saying: "If I drink whiskey, I won't get worms!"

  • This collection of Garrido clips illustrates the candidate's integrity problem.
    Consider:

---Heis a different person depending on the group/person being addressed
he's Mexican if that's convenient when talking to CPD brass,
he's Irish if that's convenient when talking to CPD brass,

This collection of Garrido clips illustrates the candidate's integrity problem.
    Consider:

---Heis a different person depending on the group/person being addressed
he's Mexican if that's convenient when talking to CPD brass,
he's Irish if that's convenient when talking to CPD brass,
he's a Republican if that's convenient to run for office,
he's an Independent if that's convenientto run for office,
he's against the expansion of charter schools if that's convenient,
but his "closest advisors" benefit from the profitization of public education,
    but he's hidden that conveniently,
he's like a windsock, blowing with the wind and to continue the analogy,
provides no stable direction to take us where we need to go as a ward.

---He's secretive. In his chosen profession as a lawyer specializing in wills, estates, trusts, he has experience in hiding ownership. Hidden interest in the Prohibition Club is an issue that has dogged him for quite some time now.
-Who were the ownership partners in the Gladstone Park Senior development project that Candidate Garrido says the whole GP community supported?
-What are the other businesses and financial interests that Mr Garrido has hidden?

  • Avast

He claims to be running as an independent in this race, but because it's nonpartisan everyone is lol.

  • B-NWside Lifetime Northwest Sider....

So if he is conveniently Mexican is this how he addresses CPD brass?
