Talk about pandering

Well that's enough of me talking about me, I will stop and let you talk about me.

And silly me I thought the two mailers a day that have been stuffed into my mail box everyday. Funny thing is not one of the mailers touts any single positive thing that has been brought into the ward, only finger pointing and name calling.

  • Chuck,
How can Mr Garrido then stand associating with the TeamGarrido AllStars (Bob Bank, Tami, Carlene, Miss Colleen, J. Hathaway, etc.) who seem to have nothing to say other than Garrido will do what we tell him to do, you know, pledges and all.

    Keep up the good quotes.

Frustrated

Does anyone know what is going on with the eyesore at central and Irving(the Mexican restaurant)?Ever since the fire over a year ago they started construction and there it sits still abanded, not only the restaurant but the whole corner. It looks horrible. I wasn't really that concerned until yesterday when I was driving west on Irving and noticed the old bowling alley was going to be a dollar store and then 3 blocks west a tobacco shop, are you kidding me? Enough is enough.

  • Ok a business like perkalator is a great addition but come on a dollar store and what about (as mentioned earlier) the tobacco shop. Again I will say enough is enough.

Is it really a New Business if it's in place of one that Closed?

I'm getting so frustrated with John Arena bragging about all the new businesses he's brought to our ward. If those businesses don't have staying power or community support- they will fail. and that is not success. Two businesses CLOSED here, and two new ones moved in. To me, it is ridiculous to call that a triumph. Brandy's would not be here, if STEERS hadn't closed down. LeadBelly's would not be here if CASPIAN CAFE hadn't closed down. And, is he...

To me, it is ridiculous to call that a triumph. Brandy's would not be here, if STEERS hadn't closed down. LeadBelly's would not be here if CASPIAN CAFE hadn't closed down. And, is he counting Caspian Cafe as one of his 80 new businesses? They opened under his term- (or just before he started office) and they Closed during his term. Steers as well. Open your eyes folks. If businesses keep shutting down, and other businesses replace them- that isn't progress, it's stagnation, and redundant.

  • "Cars are so evil" are your words, Annabelle, not mine. I maintain that we should stop subsidizing maximum convenience with out taxes paying for road construction and maintenance and for the provision of free on street parking. Drivers should pay their fair share and only expect their fair allocation of space on the public space that is a city street. I maintain that the"drivers-own-the-road" attitude exhibited on the Milwaukee Speedway is harmful and illegal.

Copernicus re Complete Streets Project

Q: The Milwaukee Av CSP is intended to make Milw safer for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists. Under consideration for the project is the removal of 1 lane of traffic in each direction. How can this project best achieve its goal?

Garrido: "So, I live in GP. So this project would definitely directly impact my neighborhood and our community. When we heard that one of the possibilities was to remove a lane of traffic from Milw Av, we knew immediately that that's something we didn't want to do in our community & we didn't want to wait and sit on the sidelines because we know we learned from the past that once city gov't comes & says "Here's the project", it's very, very difficult to undo. So I initiated, I drafted, a petition, myself together with members of the community & the GPCC, we passed that petition & we gathered 4,000 signatures from people from the GP community and beyond that said "we don't want to remove a lane of traffic". We support the CSP, Milw Av needs it, it's a mess, absolutely, we want everything that comes with it, bumpouts, medians in the center, we want all of that but we do not want to remove a lane of traffic. And,he fought us all the way, every single time we tried to talk to him about it, he didn't want to sit down, he didn't want to meet. So thankfully, because of our petition, we were successful and they took out the possibility of the protected bike lanes, but on the table is still unless he's saying now, here today, that they are not going to remove a lane of traffic, that would be great."

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question: How
can this project best achieve its goal (safety for all)?

What does John Garrido say?
so I initated, I drafted, a petition
We want bumpouts, we want medians, We support Complete Streets

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? No
Mission accomplished.

John Garrido is Following His Own Tea Party Election Strategy

John Garrido (candidate for 45th Ward Alderman) says Tea Party candidates like himself need to hide as "Independents" in order to get elected in Chicago:

http://www.chicagotalks.org/2011/01/an-examination-of-the-tea-party-movement/

Branded as extremists, crazies and “tea baggers,” many individuals affiliated with the party believe the movement would stand a better chance if deemed something else. The heavily rooted negative connotations that accompany the Tea Party has undeniably affected its progress.

“In order to go in and actually win races, we’re going to have to run candidates who appeal to all voters. It has to be more of an independent thing,” said Garrido.

  • The democratic party has done nothing in the way of union support either. Super Dem Rahm decimated every union in the city that Super Dem Obama calls home and not one supportive sound was uttered so exactly what is your point?

  • Progresive Democrats and Corporate Democrats, while members of the same political party, exhibit different tendencies. The Democratic Progressive Caucus was not silent.

While appreciate your effort to deflect the conversation from "John Garrido is Following his own Tea Party Election Strategy", why is Mr Garrido attempting to downplay
    his Republican past,
    his Tea Party past,
    his clouted promotion past,
    his business past,
and his professional ability to hide ownership?

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you from the 48 unit apartment building at the end of you block. How will you feel laying out to get some sun, or your kids playing in the splash pool? Never going to happen on your block, maybe not, but would you wish that on anybody? John Arena loves density, and if there is an empty lot or tired old commercial building, a closed church nearby, you are extremely vulnerable. Our old alderman's "spot zoning" was bad enough, but Arena is bad up-zoning on steroids. Before you vote, ask yourself, COULD YOU BE NEXT?

Fred I have been non-union and am now union. Sometimes I get stuck going to a non-union jobs. The difference is night and day. The last big non-union job I had to work on was junk. Two weeks prior someone died due to improper safety requirements. The workmanship was the worst I have ever seen, and the jobsite was a disaster. It was very similar when I worked non-union. Build it cheap, pocket what they could at the expense of labor and quality. Everyone seems to want to blame unions without truly understanding the good that is created by having them around. A few misguided people ruin it for the rest of us.

The last big union job was downtown. Northwestern memorial hospital. Zero injuries, zero deaths. Organized jobsite, large safety team and a building that will last longer than I will be alive. We build what we are required to build. You want cheap? We can do that. Although, we suggest you don't.

Btw unions built many buildings downtown you enjoy to this day.

In letters distributed in the neighborhood, Ald Arena charged that his opponent, John Garrido, has made the issue political. Meanwhile, John Garrido has criticized Ald Arena's zoning review process. Will each candidate please elaborate and discuss his vision for the site?

Garrido: "So the letter says I made it political. The residents of thatcommunity found out about the project when it was leaked out in the Nadig newspaper, they didn't find out about it from the Alderman. The Alderman himself admitted that he was aware that there were proposals coming in as much as a year before it finally came out in the Nadig newspaper. 1,500 people signed a petition against this project, that's why it got tabled not because of any other reason. He states in his letter that he had a zoning meeting, one of his secret zoning meetings, that nobody's really quite sure who's on the board and when they happen. So, these are the reasons why people get aggravated. I'm not making this political, I had nothing to do with passing that petition around to get those signatures. It's just another example of how he doesn't really, ..
he says that he includes the community but he really doesn't include the community. The community finds out about these projects either being leaked out or they start to, where people start getting signatures on petitions and then finally, maybe he'll have a community meeting, maybe. There still hasn't been a community meeting about this. So the difference is that when I'm in office I will put any proposal, immediately make it available to the community within the first 24 hours. And that's so everybody knows about it. ....

Please? Just one more time before i die". She agreed then afterwards rolled over exhausted and fell asleep. Barry however, heard the old clock ticking in his head, and he tossed and he turned until he was down to only 4 more hours. He tapped his wife on the shoulder to wake her up. "Honey i only have 4 hours left! Could we...?"

Hi there neighbors! We are looking to adopt a puppy next month and I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion or past experiences to draw upon to help me decide where to adopt. Here are a few facts about us:

-We will only consider adopting. We do not believe in "designer" dogs.
-We have a large yard with 8' high fencing.
-We are adamant about getting a young puppy so that we can peacefully introduce it to our 2 cats and 4 chickens. The dog MUST get along with the other animals and be able to be in their presence unsupervised without threat.
-We are looking for a large breed with protective instincts.
-We are looking to spend no more than $300 for adoption fees.

If you've adopted, I'd love to hear what your experience was. Did you have a good experience? A negative experience? Why? Any HELPFUL comments are appreciated. All off topic comments will be ignored.

Thank you!

  • Avast,

An assumption? Why ask a leading question that presumes an answer that is as irrelevant as the question? My turn to pose a question. Is there a compelling reason for not calling the dog by the non-biblical name that BellaV gave her pup? Religion and mythology aside, I think Odin is quite the cool name.

I started reading a lot about them, thinking I must be in a placebo mode, because they work instantly for many issues.. The more I read, the more amazed I was..
This morning my son woke up with terrible stomach issues, I was ready to leave him home, but decided to try the oils.. Guess what - 2 minutes later he was as good as new.
I used to have daily headaches (4-6 pain killers/day). I haven't used any since beginning of February (when I started the oils).
I just lost 15 lbs (!!!) of stubborn post-baby weight..
I have so many examples to share because I am just amazed how easily it was to remove the medicine from my household since I started using those therapeutic grade essential oils.
Let me know if you want more information - I will be more than happy to give you what I have, because I feel like it would be completely unfair to keep it for myself.

  • Sorry, Avast, I don't sell the oils. I am using them because I really hated what the over the counter medications were doing to me and thought I should share what I know. Looks like all I got here was bunch of accusations and lost my interest in helping out, since people apparently are more determined to criticized someone rather than saying 'thank you'.

  • I do find anecdotal evidence and testimonials as the best way to treat any medical problem. (Sarcasm) This post is completely unsolicited as well as pointless. I think a visit to Quackwatch.com is in order.

I got an email today from JPNA, which was a forward from the JP Chamber of Commerce, about a survey being conducted to explore a Special Service Area. There's not a lot of information available, but this comes directly from the original email:

"SSAs are local tax districts that fund enhanced services and programs, which are paid for by an additional property tax levy within contiguous areas. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to those currently provided through or by the City of Chicago."

I have no general issue with the concept. IMO we'd be better off generally with more SSAs and fewer TIFs.

I just find it very odd that this is being talked about in the midst of such a heated runoff election where so many people who are speaking up seem to be loudly opposed to any kind of positive development in the area.

If I had a vote, I wouldn't today approve an SSA, because I believe a lot of people would actively try to block a lot of their work. It's ironic that I found out about this survey from JPNA, because JPNA seems especially dead set on not listening to new ideas. One of the side effects of this ugly election is that it's made me feel like talking about improving Lawrence/Milwaukee is a waste of time because there's such hostility. I'm certainly not alone in that respect.

I'd like to see some positive things happen at Lawrence/Austin and I think an SSA could definitely contribute to that and that there's a lot of potential for bringing in the community to talk through what other couple of businesses we'd like to see and working to bring them in. But I'd really want to see signs that any positive work wouldn't just be sabotaged by people who *want* their property values to stay *down* because they hate the prospect of higher taxes more than they like the prospect of the neighborhood improving.

A Trojan Horse Comes to Jefferson Park

While 45th Ward Alderman promises his "Pedestrian Street" designation will limit curb cuts and prevent strip malls, he doesn't clearly define what the trade-off is with such a legal designation as "Pedestrian Street". The trade-off could include efficiency apartments of less than 200 square feet, and with greatly reduced parking requirements that come with the "Pedestrian Street" designation.

I guess I was 'lucky' in that when I told her I was not she decided to believe me. (I myself prefer not to assume who is behind a name, and often wonder why others are so sure of who is behind a name.)

Ready for Spring Floods/Sewage Backup?

Anyone have the best cost effective solution to stopping sewage backup in basements due to floods? I'm planning on trying a drain plug for the basement drain but what about the utility sink that also lets in sewage? The last few years were exhausting...

Cable / Internet Advice?

We finished renovations to our house and just moved back in. I'd like your advice. We bought a new connected TV, so I've been looking at TV choices in our area (DirecTV, Dish, Comcast & AT&T for some). I wanted to share a free site my brother told me about: www.10channels.com. It let us choose the TV channels we want, then the site found packages with these channels in Millbrae — all for less than we're paying now. Changing will...

We had a Comcast bundle before but are thinking using AT&T internet and DirecTV. If we switch we'll save about $50/month. We also bought an antenna. Have any of you tried satellite TV or AT&T or an antenna? All ideas are welcome.

  • @Maria...what the Dept Aviation said can change. The Dept has already changed from earlier statements on things like noise monitors. Public pressure causes change.

Where can I buy BBQ Wood pellets around here? Also, Any smoker recipes you'd like to share?

Hey guys!

Our 11 year anniversary is just around the corner, and the traditional gift is steel, so my husband (the awesome man that he is) finally got around to getting me that smoker that I've been wanting! The smoker is a Traeger Junior Elite, so it uses wood pellets rather than actual wood. I looked around online, and couldn't find anywhere around here that sells wood pellets for smokers. I ended up ordering the Traeger brand pellets from Amazon,...

Hey guys!

The smoker is a Traeger Junior Elite, so it uses wood pellets rather than actual wood. I looked around online, and couldn't find anywhere around here that sells wood pellets for smokers. I ended up ordering the Traeger brand pellets from Amazon, but $25 for 20 lbs of pellets is going to get expensive really fast.

Does anyone around here have a wood pellet smoker? Where do you buy your pellets from?

Also, does anyone around the neighborhood do any smoking? I'd love to hear some recipes! I have a feeling I'll be trying to smoke anything that I can fit into the contraption for awhile LOL.

Thanks!

Community Meeting - Renovation of Gladstone Plaza

The renovation of the long-derelict Gladstone Plaza, Northwest Highway and Foster, continues. The owners, ReVision Group, are recruiting more tenants to join ImmediateMD in the plaza.

ReVision plans for bring a quick-service restaurant and a retail store to the location. However, to do so, they will need to change the zoning from M1-1 to B3-1.

I'll host a meeting on the proposed zoning change at 7 pm Tuesday, March 31, at Hitch School, 5625 N. McVicker (enter through the back). I hope you'll join me there.

  • Didn't it have multiple retail tenants before? I noticed the new zoning allows residential too. Are they building up at all? That would be rather odd.

  • Avast

    And you would know odd.
