Coyote Sighting?

Did anyone else catch a glimpse of the coyote (?) running down Clybourn Ave this morning around 7:45 AM?

I was driving to work, heading South on Clybourn, and had just crossed over Ashland when I saw, what I thought was a coyote sprinting full-speed in the opposite direction. It was running on the sidewalk straight towards the busy Ashland / Fullerton / Clybourn intersection. As a dog owner, this has me concerned. Any other sightings?

  • My kids and I trailed one for a few blocks around Wells and Goethe last Thursday. It got chased by a German Shepard in the Franklin Fine Arts playlot on Wells and disappeared into the night. I called 311, but there is no way the response time of the animal control unit is fast enough to catch a coyote on the run.

  • Wendi on Maud Interested in local news

Yes, I've seen it many times on Clybourn and in the alley behind our house on Maud....hunting for rats.

Dog attacked at Trebes Park

My dog was looking for a place to urinate at the corner of Webster and Clifton, when suddenly a guy walked up to her with his dog without asking. My dog was looking for a place to urinate at the corner of Webster and Clifton, when suddenly a guy walked up to her with his dog without asking. His dog is approx. 40-50 lbs. and looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. The dogs were sniffing each other and out of nowhere his dog grabbed onto my dog's back and shook her back and forth like she was a piece of meat (she's a beagle and weighs 22 lbs). Initially I didn't see any blood and the guy left. However she was clearly in pain when we got inside and that's when I saw she had giant puncture wounds in her back and needed to go to the emergency vet. Please keep your eye out for this dog. It looks like an Australian shepherd - border collie mix. I wish he knew the pain and suffering he has caused my dog.

  • The owner was probably in his late 20's/early 30's, light brownish blonde hair, thin build, and on the taller side... I think the dog might have been older. I hope that helps? The dog looked just like this one http://imgur.com/XzBTsK0

Oz Park Toilets

Dear Aldermistress Smith: More than hundreds of people in Oz Park this beautiful Friday afternoon having a wonderful spring outing. Some of us looked for places to eliminate only to find bushes to squat in that were next to the children's playgrounds. Won't you please plant some scrubs away from children area or ask the city to provide some portable toilets??

  • oz neighbor 32 years in LP

Please thank the Park district for the porta pottis. They put them in the Park every spring in time for the kids baseball season.
Ms Smith had nothing to do with this, the Park supervisor got them put in. Oh I forgot, one more thing for Smith to take credit for that she didn't do!

  • O V

I apologize in advance if the post was meant to be funny to bring attention to the fact there need to be porter potties in the park to eliminate the 'bush squatting'. It's just that being a resident of this wonderful city and seeing people 'eliminate' themselves anywhere they please (including a playground across the street from my house), it wouldn't surprise me if you were serious about it.

A Worthy Cause

Saving the Black Duck and preserving the historic Halsted Willow Gateway to the Sheffield Historic District is a worthy cause. DNA's article on the the history of Chicago Magic and the Black Duck exemplifies the many hidden gems that are often lost. Thanks DNA.

Stops Lights and Turning Arrows

I've noticed that many intersections throughout Chicago do not have turning arrows for turning lanes which makes traffic quickly back up in many areas. Most recently, I see that they are installing new stop lights and replacing stop signs at Greenview and Fullerton in West Lincoln Park. Again, they are not installing any sort of turning arrow from eastbound Fullerton to northbound Greenview. How are these decisions being made and what can be done to get a turning signal in?...

How are these decisions being made and what can be done to get a turning signal in? I am 100% confident that traffic will be a nightmare through that area with the close proximity to the Ashland and Fullerton intersection. It seems the idea of not installing turning signals at lights is a nuisance and can easily help with traffic congestion.

  • Contact the alderman of that area, 32nd Ward Alderman Scott Waguepack.

By the way, that intersection is a city revenue trap - best to avoid. The City has used an intentional loophole in a law intended to be for school zones to set a camera with a 20 MPH limit on a busy commercial intersection. ...and this on top of the red light camera already there. Nothing to do with safety - all about revenue. Disgraceful!

First Triathlon (Sprint) looking for swim help

I signed up for the TriRock Lake Geneva in September. It's my first triathlon, maybe the only one I will do, but I am doing the Sprint distance and have NO CLUE about swimming technique.

I go to XSport and was hoping to maybe find someone with the same membership who could help me learn to swim properly or even a Saturday program or something.

I don't necessarily want full-on tri-training which I can find online. Wanted to focus on the swim portion.

Chubb Offers Tips to Help Keep Basements Dry This Spring

As the rainy season of spring approaches, now is the time for homeowners to make sure their basements will remain dry.

“The combination of rapidly melting snow and heavy rain can overwhelm homes that are not prepared to handle and dissipate all that water,” warned Jim Magliaro, appraisal operating manager at Chubb Personal Insurance. “A sharp, sudden rise in temperatures coupled with steady rain can create instant flooding that damages homes, especially those with basements.”

Magliaro said homeowners can take action now to help keep their basements from turning into swimming pools this spring. He suggested that homeowners:

Clear the ice and snow: If your house is still surrounded by snow, make sure the snow is not piled up against it. Icicles hanging from the gutters are likely a sign that the gutters and downspouts are clogged with ice. With clogged gutters, rain can sometimes make its way into the house instead of flowing safely away from the house. Homeowners in warmer climates should inspect their gutters to make sure they are not clogged with leaves or other debris.

Check sump pumps: Homeowners should test their sump pumps to make sure they are working properly. Water from a sump pump should drain away from the house so that it does not flow back into the basement. It’s a good idea to have a backup pump in case the primary pump fails. An alternative energy source, such as a backup battery or an electrical generator, will help ensure that the pump continues to work during power outages.

Safeguard valuables: Even if you’ve taken every precaution to keep water out of your home, the basement may still get wet. You can still mitigate your losses by removing rugs, electronics and other valuables from the basement floor.

While these steps may help prevent losses, Magliaro said that some homeowners also should consider long-term solutions, such as re-grading the property so that water flows away from the house.
