Alderman Election

I've had one person stop by asking for a signature to get on the ballot for Alderman. It's a tough decision to sign or not. We, myself included, need to do research before signing. Our neighborhood deserves someone honest and reputable, and someone we know before signing just to get them on the ballot.

It's so strange to me that 'they' claim we're not in the path - a plane just went over my house, very low, and the contents in cabinets were shaking. Really? I'll have to go to the website Annie02.

Olympia Park tress cutdown??

Does anyone know why all of those beautiful big old trees at Olympia Park were cut down?? There are now a ton of "stumps" there where these giant old trees have been standing since my childhood. I called the park and was told something about "disease" but I am incredulous. Also, one of the "stumps" now has some kind of painted mural applied to it. This is WAY ugly and now the park is starting to look more like an "inner city" park instead of the nice green haven it always has been. Anybody know what really happened and why these trees were removed??

A park district official with the city contacted me in response. He did not claim to be an expert (certified arborists) per say, even asking my opinion on trees to replant commenting that I seemed to have some knowledge on. He was respectful and willing to discuss.
They are aware of the hazards remaining. I expressed how some trees taken down were not in immediate need as others which still remain continuing the spread of disease and have weakened limbs which have fallen and will continue to.
I agree some absolutely had to come down. The fact remains it was poor planning and a haphazard process.
Multiple diseased and near death trees still remain, including a Cottonwood who's 7’+ branches have fallen next to the play lot sandbox twice (speaking of children being hit) in the last three years; so large one limb remained for over a week blocking walking paths in all directions until removed.
Many remaining trees could benefit from old limbs being pruned back, strengthening them and preventing disease and their take down as well. We dont just have Ash trees in the park in need of care. But the park district doesn’t seem to allow for proper maintenance.
I later contacted the same official I spoke to and thanked him for the planting of so many new trees. It’s the least they could have done to ensure the future health of the park for the community.
If they know people care, there stands a chance they may consider only removing trees that must immediately go without still leaving a handful of dead/diseased trees behind and remove any weak or dying limbs on remaining trees to keep them strong. Larger trees will remain for good health of the people and the community who use the park.

    Thank you for your consideration

PRW, I really appreciate your sharing this and also your conscientious efforts and participation in this. And I am encouraged that a Park District official responded to these posts. That, I appreciate as well.

The old Duke's

Does anyone know what is going on with the old Duke's? I know that there is supposed to be another grocery store. Then last week there was a notice from the city that the work order was stopped because things were being done without the proper permits. Now that the sign is gone, I don't see any activity. It would be nice if someone would get it together for a change.

  • Chicago.Girl life long nw-sider

I understand grocery stores have a very small window if profit so I made the effort to stop at Dukes at least once a week. It was great having fresh vegetables less than a block away. I hope we do get something in there for the sake of the elderly in the area that don't drive any longer.

internet Service Providers OTHER than AT&T??

Our internet AT&T service is horrible, cutting out once every 5 minutes or so. I was even warned this by the AT&T installer, that Edison Park was a "spotty zone" (but dumb me went ahead with it anyway). I know from some neighbors that this seems to be a common issue with AT&T around Edison Park (at least in some parts)--is anyone using another service provider they can recommend? I keep getting marketing mail from Clear, but I've also heard that their service is spotty, depending on your location. Any suggestions?

I just switched from Direct TV to Comcast. Bundled cable, phone and internet. So far happy, and less expensive than ATT for phone/internet, and Direct TV for cable.

Neighbors have Clear, and they love it. However, I don't know if they use abuse it as much as I do, doubt it. As a former manager of SBC/AT&T, your mileage may vary. But I'd stay away from them. My mother is in Norwood Park (by Res), and her DSL is spotty at best. Older areas are not going to receive new plant (cables), as its too expensive to do so. Newer areas are usually going to have better quality service. And while there are some good techs out there, I have some stories of some of the shortcuts I've seen some of the techs do.

  • I've been in Norwood Park for a few months now but have had spotty Comcast. About 5-6 outages lasting from 20min to a couple hours.

Anyone else have good luck with Clear?

Car crash and suspects on foot Monday evening 8/25

I just got a text saying there was a police chase and the suspects car crashed around NW Hwy and Overhill. Suspects ran North on Overhill. All I know right now. Lock your doors, alert your neighbors. I believe this to be true, but is coming to me in pieces.

New Stop Sign-Avondale and Ogallah

Was walking by this intersection last night and just noticed it. The stop sign for traffic going southeast on Avondale is partially blocked by tree limbs. There are no lines painted on pavement to indicate there is a stop sign. Saw several cars go through without stopping. I'll give them the benefit of doubt that they did not notice the sign. Slow your roll over there!!

Among all of the issues we voice here, what is your #1 concern?

Mine is the increased amount of crime/break-ins.

  • Having a grocery store at Devon/Milwaukee is a convenience I miss. I support local business like Happy Foods but they can't compete with the breadth of offerings at a Jewel, etc.
Shop and Save...your public awaits you!!!

  • Thread was listed under Edison Park. Devon / Milwaukee is Norwood so I believe losing the Dominick's was probably a hit over there for convenience. As far as Edison Park goes I believe it's a very convenient location and Ebinger is an awesome elementary school. Plus it's nice to have 4 parks within walking distance to my crib

Avondale and Devon: NEED a stop light. Legal liability and hazard

Hello,
The area by the Alderwoman's Restaurant....Devon and Avondale in Edison Park is a real hazard for pedestrians as well as automobiles. We need a stop light there. It is a legal liability and an accident waiting to happen. Too many cars trying to criss cross and as a pedestrian it is quite a danger to cross the street there. I am not talking about this being a danger because of that construction on the corner. I am talking about ALL THE TIME. Please take care of this alderwoman if you read this. Thank you.

  • I recommend crossing at Olcott if you don't want to dodge the texters not paying attention

  • Erin23...O'Connnor's business is EXACTLY where it was suggested that there be an increased level of traffic control more conducive to foot and auto traffic...so yes this is about her and her business and a conflict of interest.

Thanks CPD, and whoever else provided security at Olympia Park

What a difference compared to prior EP Fest weekends. Thank you SO MUCH for being there and controlling the activity in Olympia Park and protecting the area. :)

  • There was violence at Olympia park last night. There was a neighborhood kid sucker punched and sent to the ER.

  • CWCEdisonPark Olympia Park

OMG - what time was that at? I hope the kid is OK. I thought they had it under control. It was better than previous years, but one person injured is one too many.

  • Yes, It was very noticeable on the heightened security at Olympia Park. Thank you EP Chamber of Commerce and CPD. The kids were cleared from the park every night by 10:30. Sunday night the police didn't even allow the kids to hang out there. Only damage heard about at Olympia park was the graffati on the building and trash/broken bottles etc. at the park. .

Answer from Alderman Mary O'Connor

An ordinance was passed by the City Council yesterday which further restricts the power of the City Council's Inspector General to investigate alleged wrong doing on the part of alderman. In this day and age with the City Council's history of sordid corruption, if anything the Inspector General's powers need to be expanded not diminished. For reasons unknown, our own 41st Ward Alderman Mary O'Connor voted for this ordinance. As our public representative I think Alderman O'Connor needs to explain to the people who elected her as to why she voted for this ordinance which will only serve to protect alderman accused of wrong doing.

Coyote Sighting

While walking in front of Edison School last night, I saw a coyote cross the intersection of Clarence and Olcott. It was about 10:00 p.m. Unfortunately, by the time I fumbled for my phone to snap a picture, it had continued south towards Myrtle.
Please keep an eye on your small pets!!

The dispatcher's advice to me was " just stay away from it." Really?
Anyway, I thought that coyotes were nocturnal but obviously they roam the area during the day, too.
Best advice is keep the garbage cans securely covered so they cant feed off the garbage & call 311.

  • PattyC328 Have lived in Oriole Park for 42 yrs!

I saw one in the handicapped/maternity parking spots directly in front of the main entrance to Resurrection Hospital on Talcott a few months ago at approx 8pm.

  • It might be the same Coyote that we all saw. Obviously, he has been here for some time. It's just something that we have to be aware of. If you see him, just make sure that you report him. Several years back, I saw a truck with strange antennas on top of it. The driver told me that he was tracking coyotes with this equipment. So obviously there is some program in place that tracks these animals down.

Airplane noise

Is it naive to think that continuing to enter complaints into the 311 system specific to the airplane noise will make any difference? There are stretches of time that we get planes directly overhead every 90 seconds for an hour to an hour and a half straight.
