Hawk Sighting.....

Keep an eye on your small dogs. I spotted a hawk on my neighbor's fence at Devon and Oriole. I have seen these things take a small dog and carry them off. It is a rare sighting in the area. Be on the lookout. It is black with a white neck and grey face.

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

Hawks aren't all that rare in the Chicago area.

  • ls

I see them often around Brooks Park and the area.

  • No at rare as you think. This summer there was a flock of three flying around our part of EP. We see them now and then. These are brown.

Hawk Sighting

Today I saw a hawk on my neighbor's fence that stood about a foot and a half high with a 3 foot wing span. Fair warning to those who have small dogs and cats outdoors. I have seen these hawks carry off dogs and cats. It is very unusual to see a hawk in the city so beware.

  • We've seen the red tailed hawk around our house in Norwood Park a few times this past year.

  • The hawks have been around the Foster/Harlem area for a few years now! I saw one just the other day sitting on top of the light pole at Foster and Merrimac. They keep the vermin down but you do need to check when letting your dogs out. One of the first times I saw one it was eating a rabbit in a neighbor's tree!

We came home about 1 am Tuesday morning to find a strange pick-up truck running with the lights on & a strange young driver sound asleep inside. Being cautious & hoping to keep the situation from escalating, we called the police. We were relieved when two police vehicles showed up. We watched out of our front windows as thr strange young man got out of his car & was questioned & searched. Then, his pick-up truck was also searched. He ended up in one of the police vehicles & a policeman drove the pick-up truck away. This was a very unsettling & weirdly unexpected experience where we live. We live across from Brooks Park, so for a moment, we wondered if he had a dog or something related to the park or somebody looking for one of our 3 adult children. We have lived here since 1979, & we never experienced this before.

Senior Living Recommendations?

My father (79yo) has dementia and is currently at home, being cared for by my mother (76yo). My sister, mother and I are starting to research senior living facilities in the area that also offer memory care as his condition is quickly worsening. Any feedback or personal experiences with these type of facilities would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

  • i agree with the others, norwood crossing is very good. we used it for a year and a half and had no issues. you may return there after a hospital visit which is nice. it has much to offer including programs to stay busy and keep up with current events, physical and speech therapy, music therapy. transportation to doctor appointments and dental visit. they made the best for a difficult situation for families.

  • Norwood Crossing's Memory Unit is excellent. Individual rooms, hotel like. Staff is wonderful and caring with many activities for the residents. Highly recommended if you can afford it. Expensive but worth very penny. My aunt was their until her passing.

All very different depending on if the person is social, active, reserved ect. Not an easy rode ahead of u. Good luck

Thank you Abell Animal Hospital

Yesterday I had to put my pet down. One of the hardest things to do. I have been coming to you sense 1988. Nothing has changed. NOTHING! We had the whole staff with us. Yesterday I had to put my pet down. One of the hardest things to do. I have been coming to you sense 1988. Nothing has changed. NOTHING! We had the whole staff with us. We asked for the last appointment of the day so that we could have our privacy. Holy cow! You people have more compassion than ANYONE. Dr. Cheryl, thank you for your compassion to me and my husband. Dr. Sing, thank you for ALL you do for my dog and my cats. And Chris, thank you for being the best person in animal health care there is. I have known you for years. You are amazing. I don't care what ANYONE has said about Abell Animal Hospital on here. I have to say, they are the BEST. When my dog is dragging ME into a doctor's office to get a shot, I know I'm going to the right place. Thank you for your compassion and your love. You ALL made Steve's last hours so loving, not only for Steve but for us to. Thank you. We love you ALL so much.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I agree that the staff at Abell is great.

Snow Shoveling Service?

Anyone know of a reliable residential snow shoveling service? I travel and need to have a service that will show up in a timely manner. Any recommendations would be very appreciated.

  • Big Guys Snow Removal. 847-722-5825. We had them last year for the first time and they were awesome, my husband was leery as,"no one can do it like he does" but we couldn't have been more pleased. They have a FBPage also!

Proper way to dispose of Gasoline?

Hello, its been a very long time since I have checked this site but as the headline says... I am trying to figure out the proper way to dispose of Gasoline. I'm winterizing my car and I have a couple fuel jugs in my garage that have very old fuel in them. What is the procedure for emptying these fuel jugs? Also would it be recommended to refill a container (especially since gas has been cheaper recently) and store it in my trunk? Or should I just keep a couple empty fuel jugs in my trunk just to be safe. Thanks to anyone that can help out or give some advice!!

  • If you don't have triple A and are that worried about running out of gas, leave an empty one in your trunk. You don't have a lawn mower or snow blower? How about a neighbor?

  • BILL LIFELONG CHICAGO RESIDENT

Greeny, I would take it to a full service auto repair shop. At my shop we take it all the time and dump it in with our used motor oil.for recycling. I'd tell you to bring it by but my shop is in Wilmette. By the way, you can tell good gas from bad by the smell. Bad gas smells like varnish.

I just called the alderman's office myself to be able to answer the questions sense no one wanted to do the foot work. It will be a meet and greet for the new 16th district Commander Bay and they will be doing a Q&A on issues regarding the Chicago Police Department. The NextBlock post was of no help. That is why I stated to call the alderman's office to get the information. If you want to know more, call her office yourself and ask your questions. That is all the information they gave me. Picking up the phone and calling 773-594-8341 is a lot easier than leaving rude posts.

  • Good info to know ... thanks for sharing it!
