Frank Z

Hello Neighbors!
I just saw a guy putting an "under contract" sticker on the old Frank Z sign. I just wanted to know if anyone knew who was going to be moving into the space. I had heard that a grocery store and gym were interested, but those were just rumors. (However, I am keeping my finger's crossed for the grocery store!) Thanks for any insight!

  • It's a Toyota dealership. See the previous Everyblock thread "Z Frank" for details and commkents.

Reminder: Women's Baseball in Chicago during World War II

Here's another way in which women's roles expanded during WWII: The National Women's Baseball League (1944-54) included the Thillens Checashers a fast-pitch team that played at Thillens Stadium, Devon and Kedzie. Documentary filmmaker Adam Chu will trace the league's West Ridge connection in his talk at Northtown Library, 6435 N. California Ave., this Tuesday August 26 at 6:30 pm. The league was a rival to the All-American Women's Baseball League (1943-54) which was the subject of the film "A League of Their Own." His talk is co-sponsored by the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society and the Northtown Library.

Deadly Mosquitoes Invade West Rogers Park

A woman in her 70s who lives in West Rogers Park was diagnosed with the city's first case of West Nile virus, officials said. Of the more than one hundred victims last year, around ten percent died. Technicians will be spraying Zenivex to poison the mosquitoes. You should stay indoors and close your windows while spraying is underway as an extra precaution, city officials said. Be careful because one bite can kill you. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140819/norwood-park/city-spray-far-northwest-side-for-mosquitoes-wednesday

  • Yeah, She Chemist. What's your deal? You're being such a downer, throwing in all these "statistics" and "big words."

Can't you just let me overreact to this whole thing, and let me stay anxious about dying from west nile virus?!?!?

Can't you just let me demand FACTS and INFORMATION ... Just without actually having the most accurate and complete ones?

...cuz I don't want to learn things that will make me less scared!

Seriously, though. What are you, some kind of elitist?

Illegal sign gone

Sun-Times says that obnoxious electronic billboard at Lunt and Western was taken down Aug. 11.

(The company that erected it is also said to have Bruce Rauner as a "passive" investor whose campaign has been given $188,000 in free advertising by the company, the CEO of which is also the head of "Mayors for Rauner.")

What happened behind the IHOP next to Mather High School?

My partner and I were grabbing dinner at the Chipotle at the corner of Peterson and Lincoln when we saw a ton of police in that alley between the plaza parking lot and behind IHOP. When we came out there was an ambulance, red police tape, and even more police. I hope that this wasn't a homicide.

Flash Cab Sideswipe

Hello neighbors! Has anyone else in the neighborhood had issues with the taxis that park in the lots along Western across from Starbucks/Z-Mart?

They constantly zip out of those lots like bats out of hell, and I now have a white and green scrape along the driver's side of my car. Had this happened to you? What did you do?

  • Parking in the area, as I'm sure you are aware, is very limited. There aren't a lot of options available.

Worse, some of these cab drivers are also a hazard for pedestrians. I've seen them slam their breaks on numerous times to avoid speeding into people when tearing out of the alleyway or speeding to the end of the block.

This is a larger problem than just my scraped up car, but thank you for your insightful and productive comment.

  • DebbyV 27 yrs in our GREAT neighborhood

I'm irritated by the long line of cabs parked on the east side of Western just south of Peterson. SInce they park all the way up to the intersection, it drastically reduces the right turn lane to only one-two cars causing long backups every morning during rush hour. This thread reminds me that I need to call the ward office to see if something can be done.

Trader Joe's continued

The more folk we get on the website the better. This alderman is content to keep things the same. We don't need more cell phone stores, empty sari shops and lack of variety in food choices. If we live in the most diverse neighborhood in the city, where is the diversity. While trader joes is a chain it would be a great start

  • Derrick in West Ridge Resident of West Ridge since 1997

Karen, I think there are many factors surrounding this issue. Trader Joe’s (and any grocer for that matter) has to take into consideration the location, demographics and competition. Karen, I think there are many factors surrounding this issue. Trader Joe’s (and any grocer for that matter) has to take into consideration the location, demographics and competition. With a Mariano’s, Meijers, and Walmart all soon to open in that Touhy/McCormick//Oakton vortex, and with a new TJ recently opened in Evanston, plopping another grocer in or near the 50th Ward is probably not economically viable. Not to mention the long-rumored Cermak Fresh Market that’s supposed to be opening in the old Dominick’s space near Ridge/Damen/Pratt.

I agree with you and Robin, that the Western and Touhy strips are woefully lacking but what’s missing is some kind of strategy or master plan for attracting businesses to the ward. It has to be a mix of independents, non-profits, and chains if we want to see something that can revitalize those spaces. I recall discussions in the not-so-distant past from the Alderman’s office as well as organizations like the WRPCO about how to attract and attain the right mix of businesses but that was a while ago and I’m not sure where things stand. Perhaps representatives from those groups and any others might weigh-in here. Anybody out there?

While it certainly wouldn’t hurt to petition Trader Joe’s, I think the effort has to be bigger than that. I’m a huge fan of TJ and would like to see them in more locations, I just don’t know how feasible/realistic it is for them to consider the 50th Ward. That’s where leadership from our elected officials and community organizations is needed.

    But I appreciate your spirit!

Check out previous EB conversations "Let's Go Aldermanic" and "Devon Shopping" for suggestions from neighborhood residents about the kinds of businesses residents would like to see on Devon, on Western, on Touhy. I agree than a master plan for economic development is long overdue--or else we don't know that there is one. I think we have to make a real effort to attract stores that appeal to the 70% of the neighborhood that isn't Indian or Pakistani. On one of the earlier threads I noted that the last time I counted there were 28 sari shops between California and Western but not one place where Western-style clothes or shoes are sold. I maintain that part of the reason other stores don't consider opening here is because the area is marketed as Little India, period. The rest of us have to take our diversity and our business elsewhere. That's why the Lincoln Town Mall is successful, why Wal-Mart, Mariano's, and other stores choose to locate near but not in once-viable commercial strips like Western and Touhy. The storefronts west of Washtenaw now are being occupied by home-health services, medical supply stores and clinics, one-person offices, etc., necessary businesses but not the kind that will provide employment to neighborhood residents or contribute much in the way of tax dollars to our shrinking economic base.

Trader Joe's

Good morning 50 th ward. I spoke to someone at trader joes yesterday about petitioning for a store in the west ridge area. I was told to go to their website and under " contact us" state my case. The more folks petition the more they will consider it. I am tired of waiting for the alderman to do anything for this ward

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

Been there, done that, not going to happen. A monster Mariano's will be at Touhy and McCormick; a gigantic Meier will be at Oakton and McCormick.

  • karen returned to my roots

Neither is in this ward. Neither is even in the city. Why not try

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

I tried many times, as have others. Hey, it's just a contact form on their website, so feel free.

If Trader Joe's were interested in the 50th ward, they would have made a move before now.

IRS Scam

There are people calling and posing as IRS agents, threatening lawsuit or arrest if immediate payment isn't made. Seems obvious after the fact, but they are very good at making you feel very afraid. Please don't judge us; I simply want to raise awareness so others don't fall prey. The IRS will never call you about tax disputes. If someone does call posing as IRS and threaten you, it is a scam.

Z Frank

I was unable to attend the community meeting this evening regarding the sale and potential redevelopment of the old Z Frank space at Western and Peterson. Was anyone there and have any information? Overall feel for how this will pan out?

  • I wonder if the residents most affected could band together and use the rezoning as leverage to get the buildings modified. If it's already a done deal it's hopeless...you would think that residents would have a say in this, though.

  • Z Frank Chevrolet was in that location since 1936, until it was sold to Mike Anderson Chevrolet in 2008, and subsequently moved to Irving Park, near Six Corners. There was also a Pontiac dealership where the Walgreens is now located. This area has been commercial (and a car dealership) for...

Z Frank Chevrolet was in that location since 1936, until it was sold to Mike Anderson Chevrolet in 2008, and subsequently moved to Irving Park, near Six Corners. There was also a Pontiac dealership where the Walgreens is now located. This area has been commercial (and a car dealership) for longer than most of us have been alive, it's just been vacant for the last several years. To me, complaining about a new car dealership coming in is on a par with complaining about airport noise after you buy a house in Des Plaines -was the airport there when you bought the place? Yes? Then you knew about the "nuisance" and that should have been part of your decision making process. Same with Z Frank. I, for one, welcome the new enterprise.

Red light cameras in Chicago caught thousands of undeserving drivers during sudden spikes in tickets that city officials say they cannot explain, a Tribune investigation found.

I've been both the victim of violent crime and a witness. The feeling going into court was the same for both. I was nervous, scared, and at the same time knew I was doing the right thing. It is commendable to overcome the fears that cause blind eyes. Our alderman is not perfect. Not one of us are. Some comments made on that thread I believe lost sight of what was originally intended.

They had my phone with pics of kids in yard. I didnt want to leave the house and send my boys to school. I got over it. We play in the backyard and the kids were fine going to school. Guess we got lucky. I just couldnt see letting them hang at the end of our alley after they literally punched me right out of my shoes, broke my big toe, and a few small bones in my hand.. Lots of Bakery vendors :), a really nice company selling capons that we decided we will by one next week if they come back. There were a couple of veggie/fruit vendors and we bought some lettuce and fresh sweet Black Cherries that are really good. I thought the prices were very competitive and hope that more vegetable vendors come as the season gets more productive for the farmers. Enjoyed looking at the table set up by Rogers Park Historical Society. Thanks for the free canvas bag to help me bring home my purchases. Will return again. We can tell someone worked very hard to make this a successful initial market. Congratulations.

  • I walked to the market and enjoyed capon sausage and hibiscus tea infused with strawberries for dinner, plus took home fresh bread, cherries, and raspberries for later. I had a nice experience and will come again next week. My only criticism is there was no place to sit and eat. I was there shortly after 4. Some tables were being set up as I left. Maybe that's what they were for. Definitely DO support this market.
