Excitement in the 43rd

Congratulations to Caroline Vickrey, a West Ridge native, on her work to bring Michele Smith to a runoff! Throughout the city change is desperately needed and Lincoln Park is no exception. The hard work didn't stop on Tuesday though and I have faith that the 43rd Ward will get the alderman they deserve!

Another West Rogers Park fire

6400 block N. Seeley, what is happening around here that there are so many fires? Be safe firefighters!

  • Michael Archangel Just trying to balance out the "haters"

This really cold weather brings out those space heaters. Radiant heaters, in particular, can ignite objects placed in close proximity. Certainly understandable that people want to stay warm but extra caution has to be exercised.

  • Such a good reminder, thank you

Here's a good site for another monolith structure like the one on Rockwell and Devon or maybe a huge parking garage that will stand empty for years.

The streetscape by itself will do nothing to attract business, as Peter rightly notes. The storefronts are still shabby and dirty, the merchandise is the same from store to store, and the merchants don't care about making their stores attractive. They don't even wash their windows or sweep the streets out front--or hire someone else to do it. Why would anyone invest in what is basically a 24-block strip mall? Silverstein is just clueless when it comes to economic development.

Development requires significant effort and dedication. It requires a vision and community involvement. None of these conditions exist at the ward office today and I don't expect that to change. It isn't easy and it doesn't just happen with a few phone calls. It takes commitment to the community and a strong belief in its potential. There are problems with gentrification that I find very troubling; however, I know that responsible and sustainable development is a possibility. Our demographics support growth but without a desire to reverse the decline it will not happen on its own.

Streetscaping is not a harbinger of growth or development. Having begun studying urban planning, I've read a lot about the impacts of projects and the dreams that inspire them. While the project does provide a much-needed face-lift, it does nothing to solve the underlying problem. It's like replacing the front fenders of a vehicle when the head gasket is blown. These projects are more effective in neighborhoods where the residents overwhelmingly walk everywhere. Unfortunately, being mostly starved of good public transportation, most residents must drive everywhere. The project has reduced available parking, which has long been a complaint of the business owners, and has narrowed the streets, making traffic even more congested than it already was.
