GQ Magazine Gave a Shout Out to Logan Square Drinking Establishments

Watch out for well-dressed drunkards swarming to the neighborhood. GQ Magazine named Chicago America's Best Drinking City for 2014. Probably nothing you didn't already know but it's nice to see more national recognition for our lovely neighborhood:

Sawyer/wrightwood street lights out STILL??

Okay maybe someone posted about this already. It's been I feel a couple weeks now that the street lights have been out on Sawyer between Atlgeld and Wrightwood. Now I don't come home late at night often but when I do I certainly don't feel safe not being able to have a well lit safe street to park and walk on. I already called the aldermans about this. Anyone hear anything????

Some constructive advice for next year. (Don't get me wrong, fun times, but much room for improvement)

1. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Put some more thought into the design/layout.
a. There were many dangerous bottlenecks, got lucky nothing went wrong as the lack of function would have crushed people (especially where along the curvy roads with the metal barriers) IE The flow would have been much safer if the vendors were set up 20 feet off the roads instead of right on them, or if there were another way for the masses to move rather than just the roads.
b. Somehow you made one of the largest parks in the city seems like an overcrowded rat maze… poor spacial layout and very little thought into how people walk, and how to get people form stage to stage

2. Add way more port-o-johns, average wait was over 20 minutes after 6pm

3. Make the maps accurate...The mobile app, was misleading. It was stressed multiple times to download the app, and we did. One problem was that the water stations were not located correctly, and I think they were missing all together in areas. Had this been a hot weekend could have been bad situation. Also, the one water station we did find was quite a disappointment...

4. 3 Day Passes did not have wrist bands… why not? One could not leave and come back.. stinks

5. VIP is practically worthless. Who cares about free drinks. The benefit of having a ticket (minus the re-entry) has diminished ten fold and compared to many other festivals standards, hardly deserves a VIP title. Viewing areas were not VIP. bathrooms were same as other bathrooms, just shorter lines, and

  • Buster ~ I've read quite a few stories at The Denver Post and local affiliate stations in the Denver area. Seems there were quite a few factors in denying the permit that included engineering studies, traffic studies and of course, the feedback from the community (based on their 2013 experiences around issues of sound, drug use and traffic).

Of course, safety is always a concern should there be injuries and overdoses.

  • Interesting Square Peg. I just recall reading one account from a woman who lived there saying how they could barely support the people that live in the town with emergency services...and she was worried if something happened people would be out of luck. Lot's of challenges to putting on a big music fest.

Riot fest tix? I want!!! We got burned

Hey neighbors my husband and I got burned on fake tix. We want to buy a Sunday pass anyone got one or two they are not using? Also, If you live directly off the park bring your address and ID and get free tix then sell them to my husband and I! We live one block off park and got denied the free tix :( so bogus!

  • Thanks for info ! Good to know for next year !

  • The first 2 years if you showed your id(not sure of radius) then you got 2 tix. however, as is always the case when somebody does a nice thing, people received their neighbor tix and then scalped them on the street. That's why you had to have id and went right in instead of getting tix.

I don't know of any other fest that gives away tickets bc of neighbor inconvenience, but everyone these days seems to feel entitled.

Anyone tried out Logan Square Fitness yet?

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

  • I agree with everyone else, its never very crowded and the guy at the front desk is always really nice. The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

  • I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships,...

I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships, which they are offering until the end of October (not sure how the price works out for those). I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

RIOT FEST: How can this be okay?

I'm not sure how long riot feat is supposed to last into the night, but as a new mom it's disturbing to be able to hear the music in my living room (living more than 2 blocks away from the park, at 9pm).

There has to be some sort of noise ordinance against this, right? I didn't pay for a ticket to the festival for a reason, and my child has to suffer because he can't sleep, which then means we all suffer.

I know if my neighbors were playing music loud enough for me to hear in my home I could call 311, but this is ridiculous.

  • Tracy BB Super Cute Tracy

Although, I agree there is no real parking solution, if the parking becomes permit parking for a weekend during RF, then that same permit parking should apply to all fests that happen, for the duration of the fest. Think of all the money the city could make on tickets.

  • I live on Kedzie by the park and can say parking was a huge issue this weekend for me. If my area had neighborhood parking I'm sure it would have been ok. pR parking was way easier as people were coming and going all day.

I live on Kedzie by the park and can say parking was a huge issue this weekend for me. If my area had neighborhood parking I'm sure it would have been ok. pR parking was way easier as people were coming and going all day.

Riot Fest was louder and longer than PR weekend. But it ended every night at 10. Aside from the last band on Saturday that was so loud my house was shaking I found it less disruptive from a noise perspective. And the noise didn't go on all night long.

The people coming to the neighborhood didn't bother me. In fact because the main box office was on Cali it seemed less crowded people wise than PR weekend.

While RF was inconvenient it was well run and more controlled than other festivals. I might leave town next year to avoid the hassles but whether I do or not I welcome them back. Based on where I live I suspect there are few more unconvinced than I was, but I survived it and can do so again.

Humbolt residents, this is my first Riot Fest. I live on Kedzie across from the park and park on the street. How bad will it be this weekend for me?

  • Hpsince1970 Born and raised in Beautiful HP

    U r funny. I like that.
The reason we should all worry about a van parked and someone camping there is because we don't know who that is or what r they doing here. Residents with kids need to know. And also have u seen all the garbage this person has tossed out. Maybe he should move his van closer to crystal ave. There is always law enforcement giving tickets to cars on that street.

I run my daycare from my home, traffic was so bad parents couldn't even get to my house to pick up their kids. It's loud and the traffic sucks but all in the name of fun. The park is HUGE, great location for something like this. Riot fest is great for the neighborhood. Just like any fest that brings people together for some fun but unfortunately not all fests clean up after themselves quite like riot does.

Delilaah, thank you for both your concern and valid question!

Adam's experience as the Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation means that he works alongside the 45th Ward's Alderman John Arena in handling Constituent services and timely handling of many types of issues in his ward. This means his current responsibilities include managing garbage removal/recycling programs, street sweeping, snow removal, writing tickets for city ordinance violations, as well as reporting in with the Commissioner and Inspector General. It is Adam's intent to increase the constituent service reactivity in the ward to help with street beautification and general cleanliness of the ward. Further information on the responsibilities of a Superintendent can be found at: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/streets_san/svcs/division_and_wardsanitationoffices.html

His experience with CAPS is not that of an individual merely attending these meetings, but of actually being an active member of the board working with officers of the law to increase the safety of his ward. Adam has received awards from both CAPS and the City Police for his activities in regards to the organization including Volunteer of the Year and a notice of recognition for outstanding work throughout Chicago. One such example was his personal petitioning and fighting to close a liquor store on Division that had been selling tobacco and alcohol to minors while not discouraging the areas criminal presence.

Aside from this experience Adam has been a General Foreman within the Carpenters union and owned his own small business for 5 years lending him direct knowledge with both Labor and Business issues. In addition he formerly sat on the 1st Ward First board and has worked on the campaigns of Barack Obama, John Arena, Joe Moreno, Scott Waguespack, Susana Mendoza, Eddie Reyes and Will Guzzardi, to name a few.

Have Replacement Windows, Need Affordable Install

We have 5 replacement windows we want to install in our 1-story single family home. We're a young couple on a budget looking for someone who does professional grade work, but maybe does it on the side. Can anyone share what they've paid for similar work, and/or perhaps recommend contact info for a handyman or contractor you trust? Or instead anyone local you'd recommend avoiding? Thanks in advance!

  • My neighbor does an excellent job; do you want me to contact him? You can see his windows done in his home as well.

  • We've had All American Glass out twice recently to fix windows (not replace). The first fix was so quick and easy for them, they did it for free. The second time, they replace a very large broken window pane and it was very fast and very quick. I would recommend them to at least give you an estimate. We would definitely use them again.

Don't mess around or go cheep on structure.

Feral cat help needed.

Hi neighbors. Looking for some help for a feral cat I have been feeding for past 10 years. I am moving out of the state and cannot bring a feral to condo I am renting as there is no backyard for her and no room inside with my seven cats. Ideally one of my neighbors will continue to feed her but if not maybe someone knows of a nearby cat colony I can relocate her to. I am on Whipple between Schubert and Logan Blvd. she was trapped and fixed many years ago.

  • I've done several Cats at Work deployments, but didn't know about an age issue-thanks. It would be hard to relocate a feral cat without it spending several weeks in an acclimation crate, with a caretaker providing daily care (food, litter box cleaning, etc.). Otherwise, the cat will just take off.

Crosswalk Enforcement

Did anyone else notice eight or so CPD vehicles nailing cars for not stopping in the crosswalks by the Logan Square Blue Line stop? I know it needs to be enforced, but are eight cars necessary? It was causing a bit of a traffic jam with the cars pulled over and adding more stress to a crappy day and people trying to get on the L.

  • If crosswalk laws can be implemented successfully in several major cities (all the ones I've lived in plus others, including car-centric LA and masshole centric Boston), perhaps the driving culture of Chicago is the thing that isn't smart.

Roll out of the law seems botched, and aside from a sting enforcement is non-existent.

The law is not the problem.

  • Peter C. . . good point! As a driver I was unaware of the new state law a year after it was in place.

Best way for finding decent renters in Humboldt Pk

I have tried Craigslist and the Reader, and as soon as anyone looks at the address they get spooked and cancel the showing or don't show up.
I am new to the neighborhood in a 3 flat (close to Hamlin and Division) and was wondering if there are neighborhood newspapers or announcements anyone knows of that I could post an ad, or if anyone has any other resources to find a decent tenant in Humboldt Pk/West Humboldt Pk area. Was thinking of visiting churches next. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  • As a landlord I understand the frustration of no shows! Recently I did open house showings and found it worked better then setting appointments, in a 2 hour time frame I had more people through than what I would have scheduled. Based on the information in your comments, I would try flyers in local schools, churches and stores with an open house time on them. I do all my own showings and application processing myself for 12 units, if you want to email me feel free. Chy.thomas@gmail.com

I'm very interested in the apartment! Is there any way to not rent the parking spot yet? I don't currently own a car and wouldn't want to spend the extra $130/mo.

CTA Blue Line / California Stop closed for renovation work

California station will close for 42 days (six weeks). Blue Line train service is available at the adjacent stations at Western and Logan Square.

#56 Milwaukee buses are also available as alternate service to reach Logan Square or Western stations, downtown, or other destinations along the Blue Line. Additional #56 service will be added between California and downtown during weekday rush periods, southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening.

Overnight bus service will be provided on the new #N56 California Station Owl route during the closure, to link to the closest stations in either direction of the closed California station.

  • and when they are done with calf, damon is next. so it will "skip" (run past) that stop...the shuttle buses take people to western or logan, and pick up somewhere around the closed calf stop.

  • The shuttles were only used when they were doing track work this summer and had entire stretches (usually 2-3 stations long) fully closed with no trains operating due to the track work.

The California and Damen closures are to rehab the station houses, not track work, so trains run right on through without stopping. I did notice a good slow down last night on the way home a bit later in the evening.

All this work is part of the large ~$500M Blue Line renovation, but there were two very different phases.

Again, only extra buses are being made available, no shuttles during this station closure phase I believe.

Fresh Market Place Open Date?

Hello! Does anyone know when the Fresh Market Place on Western (about three blocks north of Armitage) is set to open?

  • Hey Cristian. Thank you very much for you interest. I am part of the store's new team. We are all extremely excited to get the store open!! We had some setbacks in construction but the store has really turned out nice. We did a complete gut and demolition of the old Danny's, so everything is brand new. I look forward to meeting everyone. I will definitely keep everyone posted on the opening party.

  • Paul I'm sooooo excited I live right around the corner from the store. The company I work for is on the corner and we are happy because we are always looking for something to eat in the mornings. Paul by curiosity are you guys taking applications my son is 19 looking for work. Please keep me posted Thank you!

26th Ward priorities

New Life Church, corner of Homan and Division, getting prepped for new sidewalks.

I know, I know. Sometimes a new sidewalk is just a new sidewalk.

There have been so many unmet infrastructure and maintenance needs for so many years in this Ward, it seems odd that this improvement would be given priority over tax-paying resident's longstanding problems.

  • thanks for posting cisco, sidewalks look great to me!

  • You've gotta love the "Building a New Chicago" sign sitting next to the new sidewalk next to the church on Division. That new sidewalk replaces a perfectly good sidewalk and (no longer used) driveway section with new sidewalk and curb. Always great to see tax dollars so wisely spent! On such critical infrastructure!

Who's on the ballot for Alderman & Mayor?

Found Dog

Found this brown and Carmel chihuahua roaming the Humbolt Park neighborhood. He's sweet and very scared. He seems to be in good health. Not neutered. About 7 lbs. no tags or collar. Taking him to see if he has a microchip tonight. Posted info on Lost Dog Illinois as well.

  • Thanks for keeping him safe! Let me know if you want recommendations on potential rescue groups if you can't find his owner.

  • Looks like my neighbors dog, if it is just a puppy version of that breed then it is. They usually leave him out in the sun all day and he barks every 5 minutes, periodically like a cuckoo clock. I just moved out Tuesday so I can't check for him...

I just moved out Tuesday so I can't check for him in their yard. Message me if you want the address to go check with them. If it is their dog, I'm sure they don't mind much that he is gone, bc they only bought him to replace a previous similar dog that was lost/died. He shares the yard with two giant pit bulls and probably wanted to leave. My place was east of the park btw

That's a beautiful dog. Bless you for taking him in.

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • John as an insurance broker I could appreciate confidentiality. My point was not clear. If one was to inquire about a property for sale, if asked, wouldn't an investor be privy to if there were active leases and if there were issues, I.E. Full Disclosure, from the agent representing the property.

It's not uncommon for people to chat aka vent about a deal going south also over drinks, no? If that was the case, all of us salesmen would be in trouble.

    Long live the mustache!

  • Lincoln Square location not closing. Really nice cheese and wine at that store and very helpful staff! Happy to have them in the area and a loss for Logan Square.

Katherine Davis returns this year to the Joint! after mesmerizing last year's audience with her take on Jazz standards. Davis is part of the "Blues in the Schools" program serving Chicago Public Schools.

Rhe Guillemet will make his Joint! debut. Guillemet is a pianist and tenor who was born into a family of Jazz musicians and has played the guitar since he was four. He has performed all over the world and is currently working on a album set for release next year.

Rounding out the bill is a surprise performance by a well known Logan Square public figure who will perform several songs on the piano accompanied by one of his (Hint) volunteers.

Jumpin' JAZZ Joint is being co-sponsored by State Senator Iris Y. Martinez, Liberty Bank for Savings, 35th Ward Democratic Committeeman Nancy Schiavone, FoodSmart, Moe's Tavern, Fireside Bowl, Revolution Brewing and Jane Heron.
