Crawfish tails

I am looking for a place to buy a few pounds of crawfish tails (with fat if possible). Fresh or frozen is fine, but I want tails, not the whole bug.

Any ideas? Whole Foods carries them but is way too expensive.

Thanks.

Brown Sack closing?

I called on Tuesday to get some noms. They happened to be closed for the day, but their voicemail announced it was their last week of business. Can someone confirm? Will be devastated if so

  • Nooooooooooooo! I love this place. I used to live right next door. They have the best shakes and really great sandwiches and veggie chili for the boyfriend. I am so sad now. 😩

  • I just drove by and there's a line (mind you, not a Hot Doug's line); glad the community and neighbors are giving them a healthy send off.

From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

  • I should say, based on their preliminary designs, the Milwaukee ave. project looks nothing like the Division Street project, if that's any consolation.

  • Vince L...I do have to ask, when you and all the others brought up your disdain for the design at the long series of community meetings on that project, what came of it? Did they just ignore the complaints? Or did only those who like the design participate in the open forums on the project? It only took a meeting or two to get an entirely new design for the building proposed for Milwaukee and Tallman.

The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation together with the Norweigan-American Hospital Inc. has sent in an application for a change in zoning to build a hugh 60 feet high 4 story, 49 unit building in the middle of the neighborhood. If the hospital does this to one of its properties it can do it to other areas as well and the entire neighborhood will be blocked by huge unsightly buildings. This will bring down the property values for every property owner. This company is, also, responsible for other ugly buildings in Humboldt Park.

The property is located at 1045 N Sacramento Avenue, 1049 N Francisco Ave. The building will include 49 affordable dwelling units, tenant ancilliary areas such as recreation areas and library as well as 42 exterior parking spaces. They want to change the zoning from 2 story houses and create this huge complex instead. I see this as a big problem.

The way to fight this rezoning is described in the following websites:

http://www.useful-community-development.org/re-zoning-opposition.html
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate law/zoning/proposed_rezoning_change.htm
http://real-estate-law.freeadvice.com/real-estate-law/zoning/object_neighbor_zoning.htm

Let's keep this discussion ongoing on this site until this is resolved. Please tell others.

I explained a basis to oppose the zoning change that was noted in an article attached to this thread. Perhaps you mistake my point.

The article explains in part that courts rule negatively to perceived spot zoning changes:

    Why Do Courts React Negatively?

Courts rule against spot zoning, when they believe it exists, based on two ideas:

    • Fundamental fairness. Often the suspicion is that perhaps the person seeking the change is a friend of some decision-maker or is owed a political favor. Or perhaps just is an influential person around town.

    • The strong legal nexus (connection) between land use planning and zoning. The ordinance is legally defensible to the extent it is based on good analysis and study of desirable future land use. When something looks so fishy that no reasonable planning commission would perceive it as a logical and desirable land use pattern, then the court may well say that's spot zoning.

I do agree with your comment Bonita concerning economic development. Also thanks for the delayed welcome been here since 01. Much obliged.

  • All you guys have my email now. Please contact me if you're interested in meeting to pick each other's brains.

Bruno is having a blowout garage sale! He's cleaning out the warehouse to move!

Hello neighbors! My husband and I live on Haddon. My husband buys storage units and rents a warehouse in Humboldt to hold everything. Well, he is now moving to a new warehouse and getting rid of a lot of stuff this weekend for the move! Come to the warehouse sale at Warehaus West! Here is the link of location and the stuff he's getting rid of, most if which he is selling for $1. Records, electronics, instruments, tools etc.

Turkey V

Has anyone seen what appears to be a turkey vulture circling around California and Augusta?
I noticed it appear after a kid fell off his bike and skinned his knee. Smelling blood, the turkey-v swooped down at the boy. Thankfully the boy's brother was there with a baseball bat and took a few whacks at his beak.
I'm worried about one of the neighborhood kids being carried away and snacked upon. Please be alert guys.

  • I used to live by an enormous group of turkey vultures. It freaked me out how they would fly in circles, like in the cartoons. Then I learned that is just their social flight. They aren't so much looking for something to die as they are leaving their nest and landing again, in a certain order, to establish their order and dominance.

Are there really turkey vultures living in the city? The ones I've seen come in 6-foot wing spans!!!

  • Speaking of turkeys... The Smoke Daddy is smoking a whole bunch of them for Thanksgiving! Order yours today...and maybe you should also order one for the vultures as a peace offering. #buyaturkeysavealife

Mcdonalds 2707 N Milwaukee

I don't understand why ever time this Mcdonalds has a promotional event for kids, the signs are only in Spanish. Do they not want any English speaking kids at these events? This is an ongoing thing for this Mcdonalds and I find it very insulting.
Does anyone else think this is wrong??

  • Carter O'Brien lager beer rioter

I'm not seeing how Robin's experience equates to Godwin's Law. This came to mind:

    http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2013/09/hendersons_godw.html

"When people in a political discussion want to put down other people who even mention Hitler, they will invoke Godwin's Law even if the person compared no one to Nazis or Hitler."

That said, I could care less how McDonald's advertises as far as language. If anything, most people's distaste comes from how they target children with their happy meal toys. It's the Espanol-speakers that ought to be offended here, if anyone.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

I worked in marketing. There's a lot of importance placed on language spoken in the home. That's the language of family and friends... brands want to be your friend. When you see an ad in Spanish next time assume this and don't be offended or assume that the targeted audience doesn't know English. They most likely do.

Anyone in the know know what happened or is going to happen with the Ronny's bar conversion that was planned by some of the Longman and Eagle/Parsons folks? I'm curious if they're still going to move ahead. It would be nice to have that eyesore renovated.

  • That would make sense Mccoy...why spend that kind of dough in October/November when you can really spruce it up in Spring. Hopefully that's their plan.

  • Being Fall and especially with all the rain we've had recently, it wouldn't make much sense to repair the area now. Just be sure that the money is in the pipeline for Spring. A committee sounds like a wonderful idea (inviting all opinions) to sort out 2015 plans. Run the idea through your Alderman's office and invite the CAPS Beat representative as well. Organize!

Weather it is Glenn's explanation or Colin's where the truth lies, or a bit of both, it does not explain how anyone involved in the process, from the developer, to the ploicy makers to the funding agencies, can justify spending 2.4 million building a six flat that may appraise at slightly over 1 million the day it is finished. Paradoxically, this actually helps the NIMBY people, as the more expensive affordable housing units are, the fewer can be built. Consider that if $205,000 of public funds goes into a unit of $405,000 (based on the proposed budget), the same public money can be used to build 2 units at $305,000 each, or 4 units at $255,000, costs that are not out of reach for a private developer.

Per Rahm:

Q: Ravenswood and Logan Square are both hot for breweries and bars at the moment. What parts of the city do you think are ripe for the next wave of growth?

A: My prediction is Humboldt Park. It has the architecture and the bones of the buildings, and with the 606 Bloomingdale Trail (rails-to-trails elevated park) and the boulevards, it's set to take off. South of South Loop — Motor Row, Pilsen and that area going into Bridgeport. And west of the West Loop.

  • gpblight - I read in the Suntimes yesterday that Rahm wants to hike parking tax. We need a new mayor with a new vision. Rahm is all about money. The poor are poorer and the working class will move away because they will not be able to afford to live in Chicago anymore.

The bad things are: 1. he allows the inefficiencies in union labor to continue making taxpayers pay more for services than necessary. 2. he allows the vendors who cheat on their contracts which also overcharges taxpayers 3. he doesn't give a rats nest about the south and west sides of Chicago as is evidenced by the rampant crime and lack of sustainable economic development. 4. he continues finding little ways to ding Chicagoans out of their hard earned $$ instead of finding other means to bring in $$ (ie I would advocate for bicycle licenses and insurance). example the 8 mil from red light tickets issued illegally (less than 3 sec) 5. he continues robbing the tiff piggy bank and diverting $$ which by law belongs in more impoverished neighborhoods. 6. he continues the building of a 5 star city for TOURISTS who happen NOT to live here; while Chicago neighborhoods disintigrate and depopulate.

Those are my bones to pick with him. If he could make radical reform in those areas...it would make me and alot of others HAPPY little clams.

WHPDC has been fighting for more than 15 years just to get that far! Hats off to them a nd their determination.

Logan Square Dry Cleaners?

I'm not a fan of either Ruby's or Diversey Cleaners. What is the next closest cleaners in Logan Square that does good work and has good customer service?

  • I gave Mandy's a shot, but they lost the belt on my coat (never did find it) and gave me someone else's pants (3 sets).

  • mandy's has gotten slammed in some yelp reviews but they are always nice to me and reliable with my simple stuff (pants, shirts) and she hemmed some sheer drapes for me at half the cost that anyone else quoted me. but it is small and quirky.

  • i thought damen was being done next, but a sign appeared yesterday on the fence at the western stop that said all bikes must be moved by oct 20 due to train renovation...so that suggests they are doing western next.? i wish they would add more bike racks to all the stops especially while the construction makes us double up at one or another.

  • Jimmy M Grant writer

Damen is still closing Oct 20 and reopening Dec 22. The Western station will remain open during its renovation (since it was extensively rebuilt a little over a decade ago and won't need the same level of repairs), so they're probably just going to be working on both stations at the same time.

Looking for Photo Documentation at LS Farmer's Yesterday

Good Day,
I am hoping to get in touch with the photo documentation who was at the Logan Square Farmer's Market yesterday. She took a picture of me and my friend and said it was a photo documentary of urban Chicago women. Does anyone know who she is or how I can get in touch with her?

  • Try the chamber of commerce. They run the market and usually have a pretty good idea of what goes on there. Good luck!

Finding Firewood in the City

Hey Everyone,

It seems like firewood is a scarce find on the northwest side unless you buy a small bundle from a convenience store or gas station. I'm looking for a place with reasonable pricing where I can load up my trunk. If anyone happens to be getting rid of some firewood, please let me know!

Thanks EB

  • NAFSBUC Walking my Fitbit and Flatcoat 10k steps/day

Another vote for Chicago Firewood...they also deliver-gave a friend 1/2 cord for a housewarming gift one year

  • Hi. I drive down to 71st and Dorchester on the east side to E-Z Tree Recycling. They are open Saturday until 3pm and a little hard to find. But prices are the best in the city and it is not that far. If you get down there Saturday morning before traffic gets bad it is a pretty quick trip. The fire wood is right inside the gate. Here is their site:

Camera repair recommendations?

Morning all,

I have an older model (between 5-10 years) Canon DSLR that my dad gave me after he upgraded. While putting on a lens, it somehow got stuck in a not-quite-on-but-won't-come-off position. It won't turn on and can't take pictures, but I can't get the lens off the camera and I'm afraid to try too hard lest I snap it. Can anyone recommend a quality camera repair place that can "gentle touch" my camera back into working conditions? Bonus if thy can show me some of the features!

  • Tankboy It wasn't me.

International Camera in the Loop fixed up my 5 year old Canon Rebel.

  • Agree with the rec for Central Camera! They're great.

On a different note though - have you tried looking online for the Manual? Canon's are usually pretty widely available in pdf form, and that might be a huge help for you, or at least a good place to start before...

There's also tons of "how to" videos out there on YouTube for DSLR cameras that are generally geared towards Nikon and Canon users as the priority. And while your camera may be an older model, the standard features/buttons/symbols really haven't changed that much.

Empty Polish Sausage Shop Sold

I have been told that the four empty buildings on the 2700 West block of Division Street has been sold. The building use to be an old polish sausage factory that moved away many years ago. That is all in information I have at this time. Is this a rumor, will the buildings be torn down, what will become of the buildings, I do not know. If anyone has more information or has facts about what is planned for this location, please reply on this thread. Thank you.

This is really the best place to go with pothole/graffiti/etc info as it is put into the system and you can receive texts on your phone when the report is completed "closed". I reported graffiti this week, and the alert came the next day that the graffiti was removed already (and it was....I checked:)

Maplewood Park... Safe?

Hello! My wife and I are looking at a property directly across from Maplewood Park and trying to get a feel for the area. We've heard everything from "Fine, but watch your back", to "Hell, no". Currently we live adjacent to where the Cabrini towers used to be, so we definitely have an idea of how one needs to be aware living in the city. Thoughts? Thanks for the help!

  • Thank you once again sir!

  • Andrew, thank you for starting this thread. I realize this hasn't been updated in quite some time. Perhaps you could speak to recent developments within the area. Thank you in advance for your help! My wife and I are looking to move to the area and would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

The store is called Rocky and Luella and we'll have men's and women's apparel as well as some accessories, bags, etc. We're really excited about bringing some retail to Logan and hopefully everyone in the area enjoys it.

For the past month we've been collecting some additional contributions for the store opening. We're just a two-person operation so we don't have any huge investors behind us and every little donation helps.

There's about 48 hours left to donate if anyone is interested in supporting us :)

One of the perks is an invite to the opening party, which should be a lot of fun!

this city can make you wait forever for inspections. I know of at least two groups in the city that have attempted to open commercial daycares into different neighborhoods and actually after 6 months of paying all the bills and signing on clients with promises and never being able to open due to delays with the city even though they had passed all state licensing required ended up completely broke and having to refund and disappoint all of their prospective clients.

my primary point here is that just because a commercial daycare takes some time to open don't necessarily take that as a bad sign. If you're interested in the place or like the location it would still be worth your time to interview

Childish Pursuit you are correct. That's awesome you have so much knowledge about the day care business. Child care is a very difficult business to open because we deal with children. We needed to remodel the place so everything was up to date with all the new technology and equipment that the City and State asked for. Day Care Iicense is a very slow and delicate process in order to make the facility a safe environment for children, families, and teachers to attend. The City and State tried their best to move the process along but they had to deal with the staff shortage on both their end. Other than the waiting game, there was nothing that was wrong with the facility or our paperwork. I think that is a very good question and I'm glad you asked.

Thank you so much for your interest with Willow Tree Child Care and you can call the center at (773) 360-7816 for any further questions.

Gunshots Saturday morning near Cortland and Lawndale?

Did anyone else hear this? Just after 6 am. 5 shots (very loud) a car engine gunning up and then screeching tires and spinning off, then 5 (or 6?) more shots right away. I went outside to see if anyone was injured and needed help, but the street seemed to be empty.

Construction at the Corner of Talman & Medill?

Anyone know what's happening here? It's been vacant so long, I'm surprised to see it all torn up now. A contractor once told me that the soil was contaminated from the factory on the same block and that's why it wasn't developed. For reference, this is across the street from Goethe School. My curiosity is piqued... Thanks in advance for any info!

  • Wow! Beginning at upper $700s, too?! This is pretty intense...

  • One more question! I know it's been discussed elsewhere on EB, so I'm sorry to ask again, but what time is construction allowed to start in the morning? It can't be 6:30am... This is a 311 situation, right?

I asked to photocopy some of his company's information, so I could look at it more carefully. He said it was the private property of his company, and wouldn't allow me to copy any of it. I asked if he had any material to give me that I could look over, and he said he did not.

A few years ago I was slammed by someone coming to my door about energy companies, etc. As a result, I am leery, so I told this man that I would contact Citizens' Utility Board first, and then look into his company based on their opinion.

I emailed CUB about Direct Energy, and am awaiting a response. I will post the answer from CUB as soon as I hear what they have to say.

Thanks.

  • Place a "No Solicitation" sign on your door. It has worked wonders for me,

  • I've done that. It's reduced the traffic @ 50%. For some reason, campaign workers don't feel they're "soliciting"...

Just saw a hooker pick up a john on Milwaukee, right across from the Logan Blue line station. At 11 am. Didn't have my phone on me, plus I doubt the police would be interested in an isolated incident. It IS isolated, yes? Or have others seen this activity around the station?

we're going to have to agree to disagree, kate.

eons ago i was a fanatically social and fiscal liberal who truly believed the disadvantaged could be raised up with a helping hand and that crime could be eradicated if we had mercy on criminals and led them to rehabilitation. i read the works of marx and lenin ... and alinsky, looking for hope but eventually saw through their empty, manipulative, failed philosophies.

i have seen 40-50 years of the failure of the liberal approach, the failure of protocols to treat, not punish, the criminal, to give away money to those who will not work.

i quit believing in that BS a long, long time ago. i grew up.

i no longer view crime, welfare, the economy, social policy, domestic and national policy, national defense, or much of anything else through the liberal kaleidoscope.

prison IS a deterrent ... for as long as the incarceration lasts. they come out, re-crime, return to prison. more deterrence. criminals come out, re-crime, die in the attempt. oh well, more deterrence.

i am an attorney and licensed private investigator. i am certified to, and do, train people to accurately shoot a firearm until an imminent threat on their life is stopped.

i believe that Themis holds the scales of justice in her left hand and the sword in her right for a reason. what is that reason? she is right-handed.

prostitutes fund pimps who fund groups that buy and sell drugs on a scale you cannot imagine, engage in sex trafficking, kill to protect their area and sales and secrets, buy sell and use illegal weapons. the whole money chain is toxic and corrupt - from the street to the kingpin.

someone very close to me was once saved from death by a coven of hookers, taken in by them while dying. the person survived and went to prison - rightly so. i, in turn, owe my life to that person.

so i do not hate prostitutes. my position is not ad hominem. my stance is pro law, pro safety.

so yes, absolutely. ENFORCE THE LAW. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR CRIME.

  • Y'all are presuming a lot about folks you don't even know. I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex...

I've known sex workers in this city, and while some of their stories were tragic and some of them were empowering, none of them were kidnapped or coerced into doing it. That's not to say that there *aren't* sex workers out there who are in that situation; this is only to say that none of us know sh*t about their backgrounds or choices, so let's not fly off the handle talking about cutting off the drug-addled dragon's tails or whatever other sort of lame analogies for crime that we can come up with.

Gil, you haven't seen 40-50 years of a liberal failure. You've seen 40-50 years of a bipartisan failure to actually cooperate and work towards long-term and sustainable government solutions. But hey, I probably shouldn't expect too much from anyone who speaks of viewing the world merely through a "liberal" or "conservative" lens.
