Red light camera, diversy and California

Has anyone gotten a 100$ ticket here before? Turning left in the morning onto California is hard because it backs way up waiting to get on 94.

The pictures make it look like I was stopped at the line and the. Blew the red light, but it was yellow when I was in the turn lane changed to red as I was crossing the line

I want to contest not sure if I have any chance

  • They photograph people running red, deliberately or not. By definition, they increase safety.

  • They're right there, big black monstrosities on the sidewalk. There are signs announcing they are up ahead. Why do you need an app?

Babysitter/nanny recommendations

Then we asked for experience and recent references, which weeded a fair number of people out. Then we interviewed about four people, and picked out sitter.

New businesses coming to Milwaukee between Spaulding and Kimball/Diversey?!

Walking to the Blue Line in the mornings I've noticed a lot of heavy work going on at the long building 2760 - 2774 N Milwaukee (from a couple doors north of Spaulding up to the Gap building). I also noticed one of the thrift shops there has a "moving sale" sign. So I was curious and looked up the permit:

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

  • I was thinking baggy shorts & $175 sandals.

  • Glad to see something happening with that building!! The row of mannequin bottoms gives our 'hood character 😁 (although I will be happy to see them gone)

After reading the population stats offered by the "Portal", I decided to actually look up the stats from the census.
The US Census reports either as a county or a census tract, so I looked at the approx. 20 tracts which covers the area bounded by Western Ave., Chicago Ave., Central Park, and Bloomingdale.
There is a total population of 38,522. Of that the largest segment is caucasion at 18,729 (or 49%) The second largest segment is Black, at 6,574 (or 17%). This leaves 34% for "other" which is made up of Asian, Latino, and people that identify as 2 or more races.
After hearing for years that Humboldt Park was a "Puerto Rican " neighborhood, I was surprised to see the actual facts. And while some city maps define Humboldt Park as going all the way to Cicero Avenue and Kinzie Street, going farther West and South on the census map only gives a larger number of Blacks in the population stats.
Here is the link

Jason W: Enjoy the silence. Zero accountability. PRCC and the Portal is not a neighborhood-friendly organization if you define the 'hood as including the other 78% of us who live here and do not share the Culture PRCC promotes. They represent the radical 10% of a declining minority population and create and promote things like the "No se Vende!" campaign when there are hundreds of houses in the area that are for sale. Asking one question of them is being racist in their opinion, even if you are Hispanic/Latino. They get thousands of dollars of our tax dollars to run the center, the newspaper, in addition to having taken over the beautiful and historic horse stables inside Humboldt Park without an ounce of authentic community input. One thing remains the same about that place. They are still shoveling stuff out of that building long after the horses are gone!

I remember them organizing when the lady from Tipsy Cake (a local bakery that closed their retail space here near the Paseo Boriqua - Division St. between Western and California - but keeps her bakery here and employs several residents) joked with someone interviewing her and she called her confections "crack cake" and playfully referred to one that had too many bullet holes in it.

Just yesterday, NPR ran a piece where a researcher broadly studied online reviews of food, and found that the majority of reviews compared sweets and desserts to drug addiction.

  • I'll second S.T. on the West Town Bikes recommendation if you want to get to know your bike and get your hands dirty. If not, I've had the best luck with Smart Bike Parts on Armitage. They do a great job at a reasonable price and are respectful of all types of bikers. I've also heard them flat out tell people that the junker they brought in isn't worth the cost of repairing and then explain why, except as a real stop-gap measure.

Humboldt Haus On Sacramento Blvd. and North Ave. Now Open!

Great news, it is now open but not the deli bar yet. I talked to Mike who said he was a co-owner and the hours now are 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sunday. Mike also added that the 16 taps section will be open in another month. I asked him to join us on Nextdoor and Everyblocks and inform all of the date when the whole restaurant will be open for business. I am looking forward to the grand opening, i will be thirsty! The name of the place is Humboldt Haus.

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. There are 7 copies of some of these dropped every single day. We're a rental building so ownership of the porch is tricky, though my husband and I try our best to clean it off when we can. Does anyone know what we can do to stop this wasteful madness? It's such a waste of everyone's time and I hate to think of all that discarded paper.

On April 8TH, there was hearing about the store http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140409/logan-square/neighbors-air-grievances-about-armitage-food-at-city-hall

One of the Alderman showed up to the hearing to represent his constituents, the other did not. Justice is sometimes slow, but hopefully this store owner gets the message and cleans up his act, and therefore the neighborhood. CONGRATS to all of the neighbors that worked so tirelessly to get some relief.

  • Alderman Maldowannadonuthin' has accepted $1500 per year for 4 years in campaign contributions from the liquor store, which might explain why he won't engage the community.

As reported in a DNAinfo article published in February, the company that owns Armitage Food, listed as IBNN Inc. contributed $1,500 a year to Maldonado's campaign in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

This seems to have affected his motivation to handle the resident's concerns. The people deserve a leader that is willing to attack difficult problems with a closed fist rather than a palm facing up.

Electronic Billboards

Hi All-- Another electronic billboard went up this week at Armitage and Milwaukee. Everywhere they go up they dominate the intersection and make it look like a prison yard. The big ones on the highway wash out everything...Has this been an issue for anyone else? Is there a way to prevent the Las Vegas-ization of Chicago? At the least I'd like to see some kind of brightness limits on them. Has anyone started a campaign? Is it all futile?

Menu? Opening date?

  • I think that once their permits are cleared they will open in full.

There are a lot of steps to opening a tavern and a restaurant, as well as a lot of costs, and there is no way to recoup any of that if you are closed. It appears as though they have opened in whatever legal capacity they can.

The school selection process is already underway. submissions started last fall, and they're calling people based on their acceptance or wait-list rankings for this fall. You may have to look to a temporary solution (some daycare places offer Kindergarten) or try to move to a spot which sits in the neighborhood boundary zone for that school. There are plenty of options, but it does take some effort to figure where you'd like to go, assess availability of spots, etc. As Robin said, cpsobsessed is a good spot to go with questions.

Our neighbor, who is a very nice person, just informed me that some other people on the block have complained that our patch of grass near the curb (I believe it's called a parkway) has a bunch of brown spots from dog pee. She admitted that she thinks it looks bad, too. Our dog doesn't use the patch, but our tenants upstairs let their dogs use it and people walking their dogs will let them go there. She said that you can get fined by the city for this, which sounds absurd. Is this true? I guess my husband and I are in the minority, I keep a well manicured small front garden but don't really care much about the parkway other than keeping it mowed. We both work a lot and I'd rather focus on my back yard and garden. I guess my question is; how much should I care about what the neighbors say, and can you be fined? And I'd be willing to ask our tenants to go across the street to the park, but how am I supposed to keep other dogs from peeing there when I'm gone most of the day? She keeps people off of hers because she's home most of the day and can see when someone is outside.

Full disclosure: that same neighbor's husband mows our parkway for us. We have never asked him to do it and he just does it because he's a nice guy and he knows we only have a push mower. We have thanked him many times. So I'm not sure if there's a sense of entitlement going on there since they maintain it? We would be happy to mow it ourselves. They have lived here a long time and are very particular.

If we put up a fence, then that makes the grass much harder to mow, so then that would involve pulling up the grass and putting something else there which I don't have the desire to to. Also, I've heard that this patch is technically property of the city and could be torn up if they need to access a water main, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

If she were civil she would pull them away from the front gate. I would never let my dogs do that and I would expect others not to do the same regardless if it is city sidewalk or our property. Something scary is that they both have professional job. They are acting like children.

  • You're totally right Confused, those people are ridiculous. I don't think dogs should go on sidewalks unless that's the only option. That's where everyone walks, no one should have to walk around rivers of pee, especially right in front of their gate.

Ridiculous amount of trash on my block.

I've noticed a ridiculous amount of trash on my block near Palmer and Kimball. In the grass, as well as the street. It really detracts from the area. Seems to be more right here than any other block in the neighborhood. Not sure, why, maybe it is due to the close proximity to a main thoroughfare, and bus stop? I'm going to start picking as much up as I can, and am hoping others will all contribute to keeping Logan Square beautiful. Everyone please do your part! Also are there any volunteer groups in the neighborhood that help pick up trash?

I need a leaf shredder to prep some straw for growing oyster mushrooms. It'll take me less than an hour. If you prefer, I could just use it in the alley at your house, for convenience sake.

Road trip advice-Heading west

Hello, was wondering if anyone has taken a road trip west before? Have any advice? Anything I should be aware of? Anything I should make it a point to stop and see or do?
P.S Teenagers and toddlers on board.

  • We drove west to Glacier National park a couple summers ago. My boys were 3 and 6 at the time and we crammed in our Prius to keep gas $ low. On the way we went through Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Badlands, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. Took...

We drove west to Glacier National park a couple summers ago. My boys were 3 and 6 at the time and we crammed in our Prius to keep gas $ low. On the way we went through Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Badlands, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone. Took the northern route back from Glacier. Nothing much coming back - just stopped at Mall of America on the way back.

Custer State Park was great - tons of buffalo and other wildlife. The Badlands had formations unlike anything else we've seen. Tetons had incredible views and great hiking.

  • My only 'westward' road trip involved The Rockies, Badlands and Black Hills National Forest. All highly recommended!

Blue line to O'Hare

Has anyone taken the blue line to O'Hare since the derailment? I have to go to O'Hare tomorrow and am wondering how much extra time to leave to deal with the shuttle bus situation. Thanks!!

  • Allow an extra 15 minutes to be on the safe side..

  • I took the blue line from O'Hare on Tuesday and the shuttle busses were running just fine to Rosemont, not too overcrowded or anything.

  • Brian F Long time resident of chicago

I think it saved me 5 minutes the other day. The shuttles are more often than the trains normally leave.

Whipple/Wabansia trouble

FYI neighbors: cops just responded to a call near the Wabansia and Whipple roundabout. A few cars fled the scene. One (dark dodge, maybe charger?) matched description of one of the cars that fled the shooting in the same area a couple weeks ago. Please be safe and keep a lookout tonight.

  • Craig Born and raised in the city.

    Around what time?

  • Jen

This has been happening every day for the past couple weeks

  • Jen

I think the bangers are a little too excited about summer

Any good spots in Logan Square to see the downtown skyline?

Or at least part of it. Maybe some accessible rooftops? :p anything better for a view besides the California blue line stop?

  • I feel like I heard rumblings at one time that Masada would have a rooftop patio once it opens.

  • Javad Karabi dev at trunkclub, originally from houston.

that masada place is finally going to open huh?

Chicago Pawn opening at Fullerton and Kimball.

Is anyone else really disappointed by this? I can see so many better uses for the building, and I feel like it may attract the wrong crowd if the area...

This property is in Rey Colon's 35th ward. I have lived near here for 16 years. For many years it was Kimball pharmacy, a small family run business. The pharacist was a great man named John. He was active in the community and CAPS. The opposite corner held a run down derelict burger shop building that was a real eye sore. Eventually 10 years ago, Walgreens bought that corner and forced Kimball Pharmacy out. The storefront has been empty ever since. I am no fan of pawn shops, but I am glad a business is moving. The corner had been extremely dirty and run down for almost 10 years.

  • censorship |ˈsensərˌSHip|
    noun
the practice of officially examining books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts

Who decides if someone is not entitled to watch this (as you suggest) or that it has or doesn't any value? The government? That seems like censorship to me. That you don't think it has value does not mean it objectively has no value to anyone. I don't understand why "don't watch it" is not an acceptable solution?

Thanks for the video Bart. Crazy stuff.

but not once did I actually complain about the video itself, say I wouldn't watch it or demand that it be removed. I would never intend to tell people what to watch or not watch. I objected to the demand or assumption that dozens of additional tapes of footage would or should be released (leaked), or that there would be any point if there were. that's really all, but I understand -- it's more exciting to cry censorship or whatever just to get people fired up.

Dog behavioral issues

My dog has some weird, random aggression issues. Obedience isn't the issue. He needs a therapist or behavioral specialist. He's a two year old spaniel/collie mix and mostly blind (which I'm sure has to do with his problem). Do you guys have a specialist you can recommend?

  • With no disrespect intended to a previous poster, Bark Busters is exactly the opposite of how I would approach working on a dog with aggressive tendencies. Their training methodology is grounded in correction and is highly outdated.

  • Joan Harris at K-9 University does a lot of work with the "problem" dogs at PAWS and also does private training. I have trained my dogs with Joan going back almost 20 years. I recommend her VERY highly, especially for cases that need special expertise. K-9 U is at Lake and Sacramento (773) 533-5959

El Habanero - 3300 W. Fullerton

A great little Mexican gem just opened at the corner of Fullerton and Spaulding, where Gloria's once was.

Without getting too yelpy - chips were perfectly greasy; burrito and horchata were choice. Veggie friendly, and even the refried beans are offered without the traditional lard (though you wouldn't know it by the taste). Enrique, the owner, and his family were lovely. ¡Ándale!

Avoid the Blue Line this morning

A man fell on the tracks at California this morning and the stop is shut down in the meantime.

  • Thanks for the info Buster, I've been thinking of him all day wondering how he's doing. I'm not a twitter user so if you hear anything more, please send me a private message. Sorry you had to witness it too; was not a good start to the day.

I saw this post and just so happened to be standing next to a cta crew. They didn't know about and called it in to check. They were told the camera showed a guy with a large backpack slide while he was run in for the train. The momentum from his bag threw him on the tracks and he touched the third rail. He was saved and conscious when he was taken away. I thought you die when you touch the third rail and the cta guy said not always, but it messes with your heart and you need a checkup occasionally.

TMobile in Logan Square

I'm thinking about switching from AT&T to TMobile (their offer to pay for contract cancellation fees is appealing!). I've found AT&T's coverage pretty decent (not great), and I certainly would not make the switch if TMobile's is worse in the Logan Square area (or, really, anywhere in the city). Any thoughts here? Much appreciated!

  • BTD

I switched from att to tmobile. Their store is one block from me. I could not get signal in my home. Then I found out that if you bring your own phone the costs are the same. Tmobile if iffy at best and I have had zero issues with att

  • I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile about five years ago. It was a great move. Reception is night and day.

Need to hire laborer and truck

Hi neighbors, I bought a bed at Sears but need some help getting it home. Happy to negotiate reasonable price for you to go to Sears with me (preferably Saturday or Sunday, but am flexible) and your truck, drive it back to my apartment, and help me unload into my apartment and take down my old mattress and box spring (which is yours, if you want it!).

Filthy garden @ Armitage/Richmond

Does anyone have contact info for the garden at the se corner of Armitage and Richmond? The sidewalk outside of the garden is overgrown and covered with trash (including a spare tire). Before I call the Alderman I want to give them a chance to clean up.

Thanks!

Garbage Pick-up not happening

Anyone else in the Logan Square/Bucktown/Humboldt Park area having issues with their garbage pick up? Ours hasn't been picked up in a month and the bins are overflowing (with mostly stuff other people have put in it since it's in an alley and not our own waste). I put in a request on 311 to have them come and they texted that it had been completed, but they definitely didn't come get the garbage. People are starting to leave nasty notes by our bins but I can't make the garbage truck come. I also can't find a schedule for the garbage pick-up; just the recycling schedule is online. Anyone know about this, too? Thanks!

  • PR

Take a photo and send it to your alderman. They should be able to help you out.

  • Alya A. Bucktown to Logan

Service has also been irregular because on snowy days they commandeer garbage trucks to do snow plow/removal duty. But in all cases our garbage has been picked up just a day late. Agree get your alderman's office involved.
