  • This is the first I've heard of the GGNA and already I don't like them. That stretch of Milwaukee Avenue, between California and Western is pure blight. A highrise there, right near the L, would bring people to the sidewalks. That would be great for safety and encourage other businesses to build on those vacant lots. What is it that this group is hoping to gain, I wonder.

  • John, another developer has been trying to build on a rather large stretch a little further south of the Max Gerber property, at 2211 N. Milwaukee. Almost the whole block long. Right now, it's an empty lot. The first proposal was too big for GGNA, so then the next proposal...

John, another developer has been trying to build on a rather large stretch a little further south of the Max Gerber property, at 2211 N. Milwaukee. Almost the whole block long. Right now, it's an empty lot. The first proposal was too big for GGNA, so then the next proposal looked like this:
    http://chicago.curbed.com/tags/2211-n-milwaukee-ave
That was also ruled too big, so they rejected these plans. Now they're waiting to see if the developer comes back with a smaller building, or if they'll want to build at all with the continuous reductions asked for by the group. They want five stories max, but would prefer four. The new plan has less retail than the first...the retail will be a smaller space toward the corner. GGNA seems to want small scale buildings that fit in with the historic 2 or 3 story buildings that were constructed 100 years ago or so. They like that historic look. I don't believe any of the members live in town homes or condos. All lovers of quiet streets and single family homes. That's their thing. I personally think that stretch could use some serious life. It's a dead zone. Tumbleweeds. And they are going to argue that anything big is going to make the sunlight disappear from their homes, take away their god given right to park in front of their homes (even though most have garages), and force them into traffic gridlock and traffic danger. I guarantee they won't see the positives of more people on those blocks. But....it is what it is. They control the process with the alderman. I like quiet too...so no skin off my nose. But I would like to hear what experts have to say about this kind of development scale and it's impact.

Crazy developer

Anyone noticed the construction going on at the former Humble Parquito location? The permits the developer posted are fake! What a DB. He's been reported to multiple departments within the city so that construction should be suspended soon. Who knows how many other projects of his are working without permits. It's just a shame that these guys come into a neighborhood, build whatever they want, whenever they want, have no idea what time of day the noise ordinances start or stop and just keep doing it over and over again.

Humboldt Haus On Sacramento Blvd. and North Ave. Now Open!

Great news, it is now open but not the deli bar yet. I talked to Mike who said he was a co-owner and the hours now are 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. Monday to Saturday and 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sunday. Mike also added that the 16 taps section will be open in another month. I asked him to join us on Nextdoor and Everyblocks and inform all of the date when the whole restaurant will be open for business. I am looking forward to the grand opening, i will be thirsty! The name of the place is Humboldt Haus.

I am happy for them and the event, and have no problem with what they do on their property. Their building and grounds is really nice.

What I find curious and problematic is that a 4000 member church has less than 100 parking spots, and it is dramatically affecting the immediate area.

Their parcel is several acres in size, but more than half of it was used to dump building debris which was then covered with dirt and it formed a grassy hill with a trail on it.

The grass hill and large lawn is certainly pleasant to look at, but when there are large services or huge events like this, the infrastructure (parking, streets) are inundated beyond capacity for the duration of these events/services.

An immediate neighbor of the church recently posted on NextDoor, which many of you cannot see, that two bus stops that used to be located on the formerly commercial/warehousing strip in front of the church on Division St. were re-located in front of residences and a business (both E & W bound), including in front of an auto repair shop that has a curb cut.

Moving these bus stops gave the church at least 8 more spots in front of their facility, but it took away at least 8 spots in front of residences and the business.

Moving those bus stops costs tens of thousands of dollars. Where did that money come from?

My question is how a brand new structure/development on a huge parcel with a predictable use of 1000 or more members at a time was approved w/less than 100 parking spots?

I admit, my annoyance about the inflatable bouncy houses blocking the street instead of being located on the grassy lot seems trite.

However, overloading and dominating infrastructure that is taxpayer funded to accommodate the built-in needs of a tax-exempt organization bothers me. The inflatable was just a reminder.

I expect that new sidewalks, street lights, and relocating overhead wires away from the ever beautifying visage of New Life will be another tax-payer funded "improvement" to our Ward.

  • Elise Doody-Jones Logan Square Resident

Have you discussed this issue with your Alderman ? That is what they are there for.
    My suggestion is:
You collect a hand full of neighbors, get a list of complaints and a list of ideas on how to solve the problem and request a meeting with the Alderman and New Life. Calmly address the issues and work them out together.

Perhaps New Life is so busy trying to help people that they don't know that they are having a negative impact on those around them.

California/Milwaukee Produce Market has re-opened!!!

The California/Milwaukee Produce Market has reopened! Same ownership, basically the same set up. The owner says he'll have more produce and deli meats this week and more to come (although they seem to have most everything they used to have at the old one already)!

I'm happy to have a decent, clean and nice market in a walkable distance again. Also, the owners are very receptive to getting new products (this is a changing neighborhood...) so please introduce yourself and make friendly suggestions if you think you'll be buying something on a regular basis or think others will be also!

7am-9pm (although, he said probably 8ish on Sundays, depending on demand)
2110 N Milwaukee Ave

  • So happy they opened again. Drove by yesterday and stopped in when I saw they had opened. Always bought meat from them and was never disappointed. Fantastic store!

  • They need to sell sake and Sapporo now that they're across the street from Wasabi, they'll make a killing.

Stolen bike: it's gone :(

I saw the kid do it too. Bike is a women's vintage 52 cm Univega. Black frame with all original parts and red decals. Red rear tire, red pedals, red grip tape, and pink brake cables. Younger black male with a stupid mustache - he even rode away with my white BMX helmet that has the word 'Albes' on the front. I ran after him, and was literally about six inches from him but he got away. Police report filed but that is worthless.

It was locked up to a bike rack under the L by the California blue line. He must have cut the lock - unfortunately it wasn't a U- lock. It actually was my girlfriends bike... The crazy thing is that I was coming down kedzie in a car (on my way to meet her) and stopped at the kedzie/Milwaukee intersection and the little POS rode past me!!! I literally jumped out if the driver seat, leaving my car to the passengers, and tried to grab the kid. I want thinking very clearly, all I knew is that I wanted that bike back. Basically, I was about a foot or two away from him and he ducked into an alley and disappeared forever :(

Funny, we supposedly have Security Gates that don't Work. One was Locked, they still were able to Steal it. A lot of characters roaming the Alleys at Night and Early Morning.

History of this old Gas Station?

I was having a debate with some friends over what this building at the corner of California and Altgeld once was.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it was a gas station, but is there anyone who's been in the neighborhood awhile who could add any further details?

Thanks so much.

P.S. I heard they were going to put a Trader Joe's in that building, but then the local slumlord jacked up the rent because someone stapled a flyer to a tree trying to give away a dog that they CLEARLY DON'T DESERVE TO OWN, because the dog was scared by a loud noise last night--was that gunshots or fireworks?

At least that's what I heard.

Thanks!

To say the family maticulously maintains the property is an understatement - it's practically OCD. He regularlly re-asphaults the lot and even paints the curb yellow on Altgeld to make sure cars do not park too close to the driveway. True story (not satire) - check it out! It's a slightly off shade of yellow than the official color the city uses. Hell, I'd bet he'd even write you a citation! Glad to have neighbors that care so much about the property & its history (and rather entertaining to watch too), good for the Kowski's for holding on to their own little gold mine at Cali & Altgeld (although I agree & often thought an ice cream shop would be a nice addition)!!!

construction at Lafayette school

Hi all!
Has anyone else been disturbed by the construction noise at Lafayette school (2714 W Augusta) lately? They've been starting in the 6:00am hour, well before the city ordinance allows. I've called police to complain several times and went to Alderman Maldonado's office last week to file a complaint, but it started this morning again at about 6:15am. Wondering if others are noticing this too...

  • Rai Rai Rai Rai

Ok I just can't take it any longer!! Each day the constructions starts just a bit earlier than the day before! This morning I heard those machines as warily as 5am!! Hi Rai Rai,

I feel your pain. I called the police on about 10 different occasions, but no one ever showed. I made an earlier post (see my post above from July 2nd) saying that I have a reporter from the Reader who is doing a piece on this, as well as Alderman Maldonado's total lack of response to this and other neighborhood issues. If you'd like to speak with the reporter please click on my profile and send me an email with your contact info and I will be glad to pass this along. Unfortunately this seems to be our only means for getting anything done, since cops won't show up and the Alderman has made it clear that he will not take any action. I've contacted Maldonado's office several times about this, and my messages have gone unreturned and I have been hung up on. I'm very happy that they're working on the school, but waking up residents for months at 5 or 6am is really unacceptable.

Coach house is legal?

Is it legal to build a coach house on top of your garage, and use it for rental income? Do you know where to find the City of Chicago laws pertaining to this type of structure? We see several of them in the neighborhood, but were not sure about attempting this ourseleves. We can definitely use the extra income!!

  • New ones were banned in 1957, the ones you still see are grandfathered in. It's too bad, coach houses are much more appealing than basement apartments.

  • AnnaWilson Anna

Yeah, I went through the hassle of talking to several contractors and went to the building permit office and was told NOPE! If a coach house exists then it's OK but we're not allowed to build a new one, even if you knock down your detached garage and replace it with a coach house. Lame.

  • Even if new coach houses weren't explicitly banned, you probably would not be able to due to zoning restriction regarding number of units on the lot and total finished sq footage.

Abandoned home full of dogs?

I was walking my dogs on a new route this past Saturday morning and passed by a deserted-looking house that seemingly contained a pack of barking dogs. I know what two or three dogs sound like; this was way more than that, and it was particularly strange emanating from such a dilapidated home.

I could be mistaken; just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience on Sawyer, between McLean & Palmer.

  • I think it is or another one is 2116N. Sawyer. A friend reported 2116 to ACC and not sure if anything happened. Upped it to PETA-political comments unwelcome-they actually show up and mediate or offer to take dogs. The garage has an orange unsafe sticker.

  • Ha! 2053 N Sawyer is not under renovation, the owner just slaps on new siding & what-not to hide the holes in the building. It's very dilapidated & infested with rats. One almost ran over my foot a bit ago when I was walking by. There are dogs that live on the first floor, their owner is fantastic & they're taken care of but I do worry about everyone that lives in the place, it looks like it's about to fall apart with a good wind.

I presume that we'll have to hire somebody, especially if we want it done soon. The branches are scratching our siding. But thought I'd check to see what others have done.

  • The city is overwhelmed with dying trees due to the Emerald Ash borer so be patient. There is no point to pruning a dying tree, if that is the case. Otherwise, the Forestry dept has a pretty lean budget for routine tree work.

Imagine that - neighborhoods change and economic cycles exist. Ethnicities concentrate in an area, then displace over time. People come, people go.

It's been happening for as long as Chicago has existed, and despite what some may wish, it will continue to happen for as long as Chicago exists. There's nothing sinister about it, because regardless of the form which this change takes on an individual level, it's based in a common, human desire: a better life for oneself and one's family.

The art major with student debt looking for a cheap place to live in Pilsen has no better or worse motives in where they choose to live than the struggling Mexican family forced to move out of Pilsen because of increasing rents.

The old, Puerto Rican property owner who sells his building in Humboldt Park to a developer for a "killing" so he can retire comfortably in the suburbs has no better or worse motives than the young professionals buying that property from the developer at a "steal" so that they can convert it into the dream home in which they'll raise their kids (and for 1/2 the price they'd pay in Lincoln Park.)

The African-American family who has struggled to move up the income ladder and can finally afford that house in Oak Lawn has no better or worse motives than the white family that first moved there from the city in the 1970s to get away from the increasing crime, and now complains about the former.

A term like gentrification may describe what happens to a neighborhood when looked at from a macro-economic, big picture level, but it completely ignores the individual decisions and very human motives that happen on an individual level. People want better lives - be they white or Hispanic, rich or poor. Since we can all understand that sentiment - then why all the fuss about a process that seems as natural and cyclical as evolution? Do people complaining about gentrification also complain about the fact that nature didn't grant them a third arm or a second head?

  • PR

Well, now that you mention it, a 3rd arm would come in "handy" from time to time.

L Patron closed? Here's a good nearby alternative:

I haven't heard why L Patron has been closed for days now, but open or closed it's always good to have another nearby neighborhood small business as a tasty alternative.

It's been just over a year since Las Islas Maria II took over the space at 2903 W. Diversey (at Francisco Ave. next to Masa Azul), but the new owners have done an excellent job of making this "burr-eatery" shine.

(Phone orders accepted 773-252-7303. Open 10 am to midnight.)

First, inside the restaurant has a clean, fresh, inviting look. The clutter and dinge of the prior owners has been replaced by a more open, spacious look and feel.

There is a small bar for liquor service, and a number of tables arranged conveniently in the roomy front section of the shop.

The large flat screen TV is often tuned to a Spanish-language station, but it has a remote control that the waitstaff can use to flip the channel if you ask with a smile.

Las Islas serves a small selection of beers and mixed drinks to complement your delicious meal.

Which brings me to the most important comments:

Ala carte items (tacos, burritos, tostadas, etc.) are very inexpensive, the portions are hefty, and they taste fantastic!

And there are simply too many full meals, combination plates, soups, seafood dishes, and meaty entrees to list - all at bargain prices.

Want a treat? Try their refreshing Ceviche!

Note: There is another Las Islas Maria restaurant in Chicago, but there is no business relationship between the two.

So, when you want to have a margarita with your sit-down Carne Asada (grilled steak) dinner, or a Corona with your Camarones al Ajo (shrimp sauteed in garlic), or just a Coke with your Caldo de Langostino (lobster soup) give Las Islas Maria II a try.

I'm glad I did.

Note #2: I have no personal or social connection to the proprietors of this restaurant, other than to be a returning customer. I just wanted to point out that, IMHO, Las Islas Maria II is well worth checking out.

But also they cook-to-order, and I mean nothing is even half pre-cooked, so even though there's only 1 in line, it may be that half a dozen of the people sitting are still awaiting their order.

Also, they get a lot of business via phone-in/pick-up.

I agree they are interminably slow, it's just a curse that their Taco's are so good I can't resist.

I always, always call in ahead, am invariably told 15-20 mins, and even then I'm still stood waiting another 5-10 minutes. But I am hooked so I factor it into my deep breathing exercise schedule.

I was hoping they'd enroll on Grubhub, then I wouldn't even have to wait for the phone to be answered

i remember one evening around 7 pm walking into L Patron and BEING THE ONLY CUSTOMER THERE!

i think the hawks might have had a playoff game that night. it was a very twilight zone-ish experience.

i don't begrudge LP the long waits. made-to-order takes time even though their (tiny) kitchen operation is fairly slick for what it is. not efficient, but its moving parts move well enough ... for now.

LP's kitchen op reminds me of when i was working summers as a grillman in one of my dad's diners in the '60s when we were selling hamburgers "5 for $1" (w/ lettuce, tomato, and onion) over at Lincoln/Sheffield/Wrightwood. omg - most folks probably cannot imagine what it's like to cook and serve food at that volume for 2+ hours straight with 1 grillman and one helper on a single 30" grill. hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of burgers would fly through my hands. I was maybe 13 years old at the time but there wasn't a faster pair of hands on a short order cook in the midwest.

so LP gets some slack for the delays because their kitchen is not set up right for high volume production. it's too small, too tight, with terrible work flow, tiny equipment, and staff tripping over each other because the building itself is too shallow/narrow.

we had the same problem over on lincoln ave., so dad had kitchen and seating additions added to the original tiny 8 stool, no tables diner. eventually we retrofitted a professionally-designed, high output equipment line into an expanded kitchen area.

LP should expand to the rear. if possible, and build a real kitchen. i hope that's in the cards for them, because to tell the truth, it will be impossible to sustain that level of kitchen chaos over the long haul. it's just too hard on the staff ... and eventually some customers are going to grow weary of it as well. been there. done that. not fun if you're in the kitchen getting slammed during a rush and not something that encourages staff retention.

Boxes from Peapod

I have 7 boxes leftover from a Peapod delivery that they apparently don't want back. They have styrofoam coolers inside and some have ice packs. Would be perfect for moving food!

Masada!!!!!

I took my family to Masada today for lunch and Oh. My. God. It was AMAZING!! We had the hummus, an appetizer that our server, Ruba, suggested (incredible) and a variety of shawarmas. It was everything I had hoped it would be. My mother (who's never had Middle Eastern food) said it was the best food she's ever had. Well worth the 10 year wait!! The owner came over and introduced himself and was personable and funny and very charming in a non threatening way. Check it out, you won't regret it!

  • Where is this rest located?

  • right off the california stop of the blue line on california...between townline and logan restaurants.

Local Author Releases New Humor Book

101 Ways to Get Lice: A Remedy to Society's Little Parasites is now available at Wolfbait & B-girls, or online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Lulu.

Written by a local author, me to be exact, 101 Ways to Get Lice is a look at particular things people do that are annoying, illogical, or just plain silly, such as wearing socks with sandals, guessing the ending to a movie, and refusing to eat the crust of a piece of pizza.

Please check it out and spread the word to help support a local artist.

Thanks.

does anyone know anything about the building construction just south of diversey on california in the space that was the tile, mattress, & rug store?

  • Another gym. Lovely.

  • CR Avondale: I pass by that corner daily and haven't seen any activity recently either. I actually am looking forward to the LA Fitness going in at that location. :)
