Is Uptown Safe for Pigeons?

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141216/uptown/pigeons-are-back-uptown-residents-sound-off-on-pesky-birds

From the top....

UPTOWN — If Alfred Hitchcock were scouting locations for a sequel to the 1963 classic "The Birds," Uptown would be the ideal setting.

That’s because the birds — more precisely, the pigeons — are back.

“The pigeons are back,” said Jeffrey Littleton, an Uptown resident, “and they’re back in big numbers.”

Of course, the pigeons never really went away. But the scandal involving Ald. James Cappleman (46th) and a neighborhood woman known as “the pigeon lady” came to a head two years ago ..........

Lawrence Bridge Clearence

Is it just me or have there been more Rig vs. Bridge encounters at Lawrence?

I have seen three in less then two weeks.

The only thing that has changed about the bridge is the warning bar on the east side "westbound lane" is gone.

It is actually two bridges the west span is lower clearance, the warning bar suspended by chains was set to the height of the lower bridge.

Maybe that has something to do with it?

  • did he die?

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Resident/Artist

Peter...no fatalities as far as I can tell. The biggest risk ofinjury is probably the folks at the busstop and shrapnel.

    NKOT...

I don't think the bar has been removed as much as wacked off by repeated collisions.

Wanted: space to hold group meditation programs

Hello, I'm an integrative medicine practitioner on staff at Rush, & have a private practice in Andersonville.

In early 2015, I'll be facilitating a 6-week meditation series for people who would like to learn more about the mind/body connection, & explore a variety of meditation skills to help reduce stress and enhance well-being.

I'm looking for a beautiful, warm, extremely quiet, cozy, carpeted space that's large enough to comfortably hold 15-20 ppl who will meet 1x per week for 6-weeks (most likely held in the evening or wkend).

If you have any creative ideas, please contact me.

Thank you and happy holidays.

http://rebalancemindbody.com

  • RTG_RP Doing things.

It's not carpeted necessarily, but you may be able to use some of the props there to make sitting more comfortable, but maybe you can rent some space at Yoga Tree.

  • Also in the non-carpeted, but potentially conducive category -- Cheetah Gym on Broadway. They used to hold a Community Yoga class on Sundays--but discontinued it for some reason. In any case, they have a nice big group exercise room with lots of yoga mats in different sizes & there currently aren't any classes in there on Sat & Sun afternoons. Not sure what all of your needs are, or what their rules are, but they're an extremely nice group of folks there, and it might be worth looking into.

At the time there were people for and against:

-Harrassing a lonely senior citizen to the point Cappleman's supporters were screaming, threatening and spitting on her.

-Then introducing a new law to double fines to $1000. for feeding the birds with a chance of jail time. Lonely seniors and a few mentally ill are the main target, the bill was buried no other alderman wanted to touch it.

- After repeated "in-your-face" confrontations between the Ald. Cappleman and the senior citizen she allegedly pushed Cappleman into traffic. This was a Churchill moment for the alderman that was only exceeded in intensity by the knife attack later on that did not include a knife.

-The senior was charged, sentenced to community service by an embarrassed judge, and basically driven from the neighborhood and the Asian community she had long lived with as a result of constant the constant pressure on the street.

- Ald. Cappleman then arranged for an Indiana farmer with a love for shooting live bird with friends to come to Uptown and fire a net over the birds. Shooting live birds for fun and sport is illegal in Illinois...and transporting live birds from out of state to shoot is illegal in Indiana. The Indiana authorities investigated...not sure what became of it my guess not much.

I still agree with 60660Gal u dig. In a court of law i.e. defamation of character/slander against the diner Jessie would have to explain where she got flyer she posted with this thread. This thread is a perfect example of how people "believe everything posted on inter-net but I won't swing my pendelum to find out if Jessie is lieing. I will leave that fact of responsibility up to the posters of this thread.

Dumpster disturbance

There has been a white uhaul rented from elite that has been dumping construction debris at odd hours on Mondays. Last night it went on from 8:30-9:30pm. It is so loud it echoes through the alley and sounds like firework bangs. Last week it was 5am. They have woken our daughter up on both occasions. Last night we called the cops-they came and left and then the guys proceeded to not only continue to dump but intentionally smash things. The noise ordinance is from 9pm-8am. Why was this not stopped? What recourse do we have? Thanks for your help!

Also notify the Dept. of Environment, which was folded into the Dept. of Health a couple of years back. Environment is housed in the office section of DePaul's building at Jackson and State (southwest corner). Environment is on the 2nd floor, I believe. Or, look it up on www.cityofchicago.org then to departments and then Public Health. You can send an email with the facts to the Commissioner/Public Health (with photo attachment) and he'll pass it on. Make it exacting with facts and businesslike (I've corresponded with him - he's detail oriented). Also, the noise section is from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, depending on the issue. Fly-dumping is absolutely illegal. And, for those of you who live near alleys in which the commercial waste haulers (i.e. Waste Management, etc.) pick up, they can't do pickups before 7:00 AM. If they do 1) call the company and tell them the allowed starting for hour for allowed noise and 2) notify Environment.

This is very important as that is the #1..... at the core of aldermanic power of discretion.

The current alderman has fallen very short in this area, even to the point of touting a drive-thru chain rrestaurant as a destination and will stimulate more business......jobs...etc. In fact a suburban drive thru is not in its first year living up to much of the expectation as most of the time there are more customers in McDonalds next door.

A low-density double drive thru around the corner from $200million Wilson Station on tap around the corner....crazy...not an "evidence based best practice" as Cappleman often quotes himself.
We need a higher level of both expertise and imagination. He has practiced evidence-based bad practice.

People...be smart and don't admit people to your buildings whom you haven't invited or whom you DON'T know. They insisted that they were admitted. Four people to see one resident? Sure, one talked to a resident (maybe) and the other three roamed around

The police came and the lead officer wisely asked me to step aside (yes...I was ticked off). The mouthy one spewed lies, the female added her comments and four other cops came into the lobby. The officer reiterated ALL that I had told these four. he asked for IDs; the mouthy one didn't have any, said that he was new to Chicago and didn't know his address. The 2nd mouthy guy, who called me a racist several times (sure...and my hubby is Black Jamaican...so that's pretty funny) had a suspended license.

Descriptions:
Female, AA, slight build, about 5'5" tall, medium complexion and hair color.
Mouthy guy: AA, slim, short hair, darker complexion, very nice looking, white jacket and pants, about 5'10"
2nd mouthy guy: AA, about 5'11, slightly more muscular, dreads pulled back in a ponytail, brown pants and jacket and a knit caps over the dreads
3rd guy: AA, chunkier build, about 5'10" and 180 pounds, dark gray jacket, short hair, no hat.
They finally left under duress from the police.

These alternative companies tell their "rep's" that they can do all kinds of things that they can't, such as trespassing. They recruit people who really need income and who are told to ignore protests. I feel for these people trying to make a living - but they're doing it in all of the wrong ways, starting with trespassing and ending with refusal to leave a property.

Do a Google search...this company has nothing but bad reviews!

I grabbed my cell and keys and stepped out into the hallway, and pulled my door closed. Three guys there, saying that they were "doing follow-up." I told them I was NOT a customer, had never spoken to rep's from their company and that they would have to leave. They were joined by a 4th person, a young woman. While I talked with the mouthiest, two of the guys were knocking on my neighbors' doors. I said that it was private property and they had to leave. They refused. I called 911 in their presence; the 4 walked to the elevator. I took the stairs down to the 1st floor (no, I don't get into elevators with hostile invaders). The elevator was on another floor - where I suppose they were knocking on other doors. Finally, they came down; a neighbor had come home and I asked for a 2nd call to 911. I also called 911 again. I will do a 2nd posting with the rest of this message.

I was driving home yesterday about 11:15 PM on the drive and spotted a coyote about halfway between the Lawrence and Foster exits, as you drive north. He was back from the roadway on the lake side of the Drive, just standing and watching the traffic about 70-ish feet from the roadway. I really hope that he didn't try to cross. I didn't see any people; the park closes earlier than my passing by there. The coyote was actually quite beautiful; I hope that he had dinner that wasn't comprised of pets, etc.

A lot of people know that making and showing movies (from silent to present day) has been a big part of Uptown's history, but the Peoples Church illustrates so well how the creative heart of Uptown as expressed in many different "new" media has been a part of our history too.

Preston Bradley broadcast an an amazing and inclusive message from The Peoples Church—which was in a sense carried from his radio show to television when Irna Phillips's "The Guiding Light" transitioned from being a radio series to television in 1952 to become one of the longest-running TV dramas of all time. What's with the dude who sits at his open window on the top floor of the building at Sheridan and Argyle? He sits up there in front of an old CRT TV, whistling and shouting at passersby. Seems pretty sketch.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Resident/Artist

He is the Good Humor man.

Is there another answer you are fishing for?

  • Probably mentally-ill. Mental illness is pretty "sketch"- for the inflicted person. Show a little compassion.

Also, maybe the guy is just fed up with all the blatant crack-dealing going on outside his crib. What's up with that? Seems pretty sketch.

  • There was a gentleman living in the building on the SW corner of Seridan/Argyle who was creatively vocal standing outside talking into a microphone (real but not working). If he wasn't on the street with the microphone, he was upstairs with his window open talking. I haven't seen him in a while, but I assumed it was because they vacated that building to renovate. Maybe he's back home. I never saw him bother anyone.

Anyone know what that putrid odor is wafting across Edgewater on the stiff south breeze tonight? My guess is some severe petroleum plant odor blown up from Indiana. So intense, our whole apartment is permeated with it through closed windows.

  • So glad I'm not the only one who smells it, I thought I was going crazy, smelling my garbage can, wondering where on earth it could be coming from...

  • You said "putrid" and that only can be Gary.

Carved Trees

Has anyone else noticed the carved trees north of Lawrence at the lake? A group of three tree carved into headless/praying figures and another one close by is being worked on.

By chance does anyone know whats up? I've seen this by North Av. too and I think on the South Shore.

I'm glad that someone had read and followed through with my Facebook suggestions on turning the dead trees into works of art instead of turning them into mulch. I had been writing about it for a few years. My suggestion was to allow the after school matters program or an artist that didn't have the money to purchase blocks of wood. Now I'd like to see them do the same thing with the tree trunks and branches that they cut down in the rest of the city.

I've seen some pretty cool large scale bamboo sculpture somewhere.

Found License

Rebecca Eden - I found your license. If you send your birthday as verification of identity, I'd be happy to get it back to you.

Only if you're a CDL driver do you have to get it actually replaced, otherwise you just have to notify them of the new address; the Chicago police themselves often don't know this, though. I've been told twice by two different cops my license was invalid. The beat cop in 24 (a real d'khead) gave me a ticket for something unrelated, because I challenged him on this fact, in fact. And it turns out, he's wrong. His ticket was also bogus and thrown out.

'How do I get my license and registration corrected if my name or address changes?
Within 10 days of changing your name or address, you must notify the Secretary of State by visiting a Driver Services facility or by writing to the Driver Services Department, Central Services, 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62723. If you wish to have a new driver's license reflecting the change, you must visit a driver facility and pay a $5 fee. To change your address, you can use the online Address Change Notification to transmit notification of address changes to the Driver Services Department. Please be sure to include your Driver's License or Identification Card number and registration number. A change of name for driver's license or ID card must be completed at a Driver Services facility. A CDL holder must obtain a corrected driver's license within 30 days of any such change.'

Traffic on Broadway and Argyle

Anyone else know the messed up traffic pattern on Broadway between Foster and Argyle? Now that they have implemented the bike lanes, it is actually more dangerous because 1) drivers are super agitated because traffic is so backed up and 2) they drive crazily into the bike lane at high speeds. Who's great idea was this? I called Alderman Pawer's office to complain and they said I have to call Osterman's office because Pawer doesn't take over that stretch until...

Now that they have implemented the bike lanes, it is actually more dangerous because 1) drivers are super agitated because traffic is so backed up and 2) they drive crazily into the bike lane at high speeds. Who's great idea was this? I called Alderman Pawer's office to complain and they said I have to call Osterman's office because Pawer doesn't take over that stretch until next year (hello, confusing). All they need to do is walk out to Argyle and Broadway in any afternoon to *SEE* how bad it is. Also, I do not intend this as a bikers are wrong post or anything like that. I'm pro-bikes in the city. Just think that the city planning needs to be better thought out a little with better signage and notices of new changes.

  • I think some of this could be solved with turn lights at argyle and lawrence. Long term they should consider planter structure in the median too.

  • 'Gold Neighbor'... With rheumatoid arthritis, that's not an option but thanks for imposing your thoughts on my transportation.

For many people, biking or walking 28 miles to work isn't an option either. I let others make the best decision for their situation rather than imposing my life beliefs on others when I am ignorant to their situations.

Wood Floor Repair

Hey there... Does anybody have the name of a carpenter or floor guy that could take a look at my kitchen wood floor. There is a soft spot in a certain area that I'm not sure what the cause is and I want to have somebody give me an idea and maybe a quote. Thanks!

  • jdowling Buena Park

Throw in a couple wood screws in the soft spot and tack the flooring back down.

a guy named Edwardo who didn't speak English, I txted him back and forth and his son would transpose... do you know any real estate agents? They're good for "floor people" -- I would never use an online search to find this type of work in Chicago. He did an amazing job, I'll see if I can find his #. It was the only part of my reno I GCed myself and my own GC wanted to hire him for other jobs. That was somewhere around 160-175 SF and the demo work was done and I did the sub-floor. The "clear grade" (no knots in wood, and possibly longer boards themselves) was $1-2 more /SF than standard grade that most use these days.

Though I guess that's 8.ish SF so maybe it's not terrible given you have demo work and sub-floors. It just sounds like a lot. You're sure your joists themselves are OK too?
