Dear Jeffrey,

Late this morning, an individual was shot from a gang-related shooting on the 4500 block of N. Magnolia. He later died at Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital. I've requested an increased police presence in the area while I work with the detectives and the commander. They are reviewing camera footage from police cameras and other surveillance cameras in the area. As always, if you see something suspicious, do not hesitate and call 911 immediately.

While more police presence helps curb crime, it's not enough. We need to do more and offer more alternatives for our youth in our community. I have helped many youth programs secure City funding and support them in their programming and fundraising efforts. After talking to other elected officials and organizations in the area, a few weeks ago, I asked a number of youth organizations to participate in the creation of the upcoming 46th Ward Community Youth Forum. At this forum, youth organizations, community leaders and elected officials will come together to talk and create a plan of action that will respond better to the needs of the at-risk youth in our community. Any ideas or suggestions you have or if you want to help, please contact Caitlin at Caitlin@james46.org or stop by my office during open office hours Monday evenings between 5 pm -7 pm to chat with me.

I would like to also encourage you to attend your next CAPS meeting where the commander and myself will be present to answer any of your questions. Click here for information about CAPS meetings in your area. Additionally, I'll keep you updated on the 46th Ward Youth Forum as we get closer to the event.

No I will not go to his office during open hour as he suggested. I have been to his office many times, spoken to Cappleman elsewhere as well many times on his terms.

As well I have volunteered to serve on his committees with consistently empty outcomes.

I have a studio a block from the Aldermans house, i live a coiple blocks away too. You make the time Alderman I have already tried it on your terms. Bring a friend...bring Richard it is all good in the neighbourhood.

I am looking for a bar, pub, restaurant, or other establishment (living room?) that would be open early Thursday morning to watch the results roll in from Scotland's Referendum (I am perhaps foolishly presuming the BBC will be broadcasting this live). Obviously many establishments have community events when we have this country's elections and many open early for soccer/football games, so is there possibly any place that is interested enough in Scotland's future to open early and sell me breakfast or alcohol where I can enjoy the camaraderie of others (who might also help make sense of the outcome)?

Some raw footage posted of Saturday night's chaos after shots rang out in Clarendon Park.

Find it HERE: http://uptown.quickercity.com/

  • I was wondering the same thing, Catherine. It seems, from the video, that the police just let the offenders walk away.

  • Stopping people leads to lawsuits, google New York. Gone is the old school beat cop that kept the block quiet and safe . Oh no, too mean and violent. Project high rises raised, scattered sight housing and housing vouchers in nice neighborhoods. Gangs from the south and west sides are now neighbors. Police can't fix what mom and dad should be correcting. It'll get much worse before it gets better.

I walk my dog around and i see human excrements around the trees and a lot of alcohólic botles and garbage. Also this people wash their clothes from the water fountain and hang them in the play yard fence creating a Ńon pleasant atmosphere for the kids and families that play in the playground. Also a very safety problem is that vehicles are cutting throught the Park to avoid the traffic On Sheridan between Bryn Mawr and Hollywood to jump On Lake Shore going South during the morning rush hour, it is very incredible to see this drivers go throught the Park where people are walking, jogging etc. And last the amount of people asking for money in the milddle of the road On Hollywood and Sheridan its creating a safety issue for drivers that get distracted and to avoid this people to not hit them. hope that our Alderman take into consideration this concerns and Work to solve them, I already report them to the Chief of staff of Alderman Osterman!!!

Some folks do know all the shelters- that is true. But those only help for a night, if you get there early enough to get in. Its a lot harder to get someone off the streets for good. The last person I worked with, who hit nearly every point on the City's Vulnerability Index took almost 4 months. She was literally dying, and had strong advocates helping her navigate the system and it still took us almost four months to get her placed.

A great resource in the beat cop on Howard St, who knows all of the folks that hang out there. Last time I was there working with someone he stopped and explained how few options CPD has for working with this population.

If someone you know needs emergency shelter, the process in the City of Chicago is to go to the precinct or to a local emergency room. Department of Family and Support Services is then supposed to be notified and someone from that office is suppose to place the person/family into an emergency shelter.

Often though, that process takes a very long time and people become frustrated and leave before services can be found. There are different levels of shelters. There are emergency shelters with varying rules - some you have to be out in the morning and hope a bed is then available that night. The there are family shelters with more flexibility, and there are interim shelters to and transitional shelters. There are systems in place, but not enough staff and money to run them well.

Lastly, the is the United States, folks, we can't make people who are homeless, dirty, addicted or with a mental illness go somewhere else or lock them up because they make us feel uncomfortable. They do have to follow the rules and not be in places they shouldn't be and doing things they shouldn't be doing. But if they are just there, minding their own business, say hello, buy them a sandwich and a bottle of water and wish them a peace filled day.

311 being unable & unwilling to intervene in a noise complaint, and advising people to call 911 instead is a MAJOR reason for reduced 911 effectiveness where it really counts. While the dispatcher is contacting police or FD to deal with a car alarm at 3 am, it can mean the difference between life & death for someone having a heart attack or stroke at the same time. Yes, dispatchers are trained to triage, but the time spent having to decide if something is an urgent annoyance vs. a life-threatening emergency goes a long way to explaining why you have a better chance of surviving a heart attack in Seattle or even some parts of NYC than you do here.

People do abuse 911, but it’s because the city doesn’t allocate its resources wisely enough to make 311 any more effective than an ombudsman’s suggestion box.

If you're in the 48th Ward, forget about help. There was none for the Admiral violations. Deal directly with the city; document carefully; send complaints by mail (with tracking number) to the Commissioner of the Dept. of Public Health and to the construction company. Use a camera to record video with sound and put them on CD's for the City. (Keep your recordings). Keep posting about this issue and get the name of the construction company and get it on Yelp, too. In my area, the construction violator was Lend Lease...just a nightmare for 19 months. Crews would show up at 6:00 AM weekend days with power equipment. The Dept. of Environment was rolled into the Dept. of Public Health. You describe a violation of prohibition against construction between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM. Find the statute here:

Increase in air traffic over Rogers Park??

Has anyone else noticed an increase in frequency of low altitude commercial jets coming off the lake headed to O'Hare? After living 2 blocks off the lake for 15 years, this year we have noticed a significant change.

I have a friend who lives in the 41st Ward, where they are having big problems (see article below). She has done much research about how air traffic noise can be minimized with flying techniques and schedules. The problem is more severe there, but we do find it a bit distracting when you are sitting outside wanting some peace and quiet.

WHY shouldn’t the writer report it? Because some readers might be squeamish? Sorry, but horror is in the eye of the beholder. One could always opt not to read the news--there’s a whole segment of the electorate who’ve chosen just that. But besides following the cardinal rule of journalism--the “5 Ws” we all learned in high school, much less j-school--reporting the manner of injury is illustrative of the consequences of such callous reckless driving and the risks (albeit rare) inherent in standing behind one’s car. Of course, the victim had a perfect right to be loading his car trunk from behind--we ALL do that, and there really wasn’t any way he could or should have foreseen that danger, since he was in the parking lane of a traffic-controlled street rather than, say, on the shoulder of a busy freeway, But, sadly, danger can come out of nowhere--and there are myriad ways our lives can be ruined or taken by a single selfish and reckless individual.

A human being was horrendously disfigured and mutilated in a particularly grim and ghastly accident. It was reality and it needs to be reported that way. This is 2014 and journalism has an obligation to report what happens. Even on TV, the news anchors, when showing footage of something especially distressing, advises people to turn away from their screens if they are too squeamish to countenance it.
Interesting that the movies of today glorify violence and show things that would have never made it past the censors fifty years ago. We are ----- as a society -------
    virtually surrounded by violence.
I don't understand why Joan M was so offended. This was journalism and accurate reporting. I happened to be very close to the area where this horror occurred, and I knew enough not to go any closer. The journalist was reporting the news as it was.

Lovely noise, the sound of trucks backing into the Mariano's lot at 4:33 AM...loudly beeping and audible on Foster, corner of Foster and Sheridan, Foster and Marine and Winona. Less fun was the loud compressor on the trailer at the dock at 5:00 AM (I always verify and yes, I got out of bed - sleep was totally ruined anyway) to film the trailer and record the outrageous noise (from the public sidewalk...I'm not a trespasser). In calling, and speaking with the back room/receiving fellow, I was told that "the Manager said that we can turn on the compressors at 3:30 AM." Not so, statute declares 8:00 AM. So, the "ever-generous" manager allows a window of three, to three and a half hours, to sleep. And, she has said several times that she's is always concerned about the neighborhood. Such phoniness....I will take this to the City very soon.

Mariano's Still in Violation of City Noise Abatement Statutes

I just came back from the Mariano's at Foster & Sheridan, at 11:41 PM, after speaking with the night receiving room person. The store has been a problem in its consistent violation of noise abatement statutes that require compressor(s) on the trailer(s) parked at the dock to be off -- an environmental noise abatement statute - between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM. The Carmen Winona block club allowed the store some slack and the manager agreed to a cut off at 11:00 PM. Last week, the problem was consistent with compressors on later than 11:00 PM and being turned on at 5:00 AM. Tonight, the young man told me that the manager's direction are to turn it off (maybe) at 11:30 PM and back on at 3:00 AM. Now, I ask you, since when does the ward and the city allow a business to rewrite statute? And, you will NEVER see medical people recommending 3-4 hours for quiet for sleep. This is an arrogant business and I already terminated my $150 per week in purchases. This store does large volume - let it hire more people to unload the trailer(s).

  • It's impressive how on top of things you are! I wasn't aware of the special requirements for SNCs. Are those available somewhere online? The land by the loading dock for Mariano's is still available, I believe. It's the narrow, deep parcel between the Foster portion of the Club and the Mariano's building. I was surprised to hear the Club hadn't purchased it because theoretically something could go in there that would overshadow or otherwise affect their property in a significant way.

  • I thought of the wrong lot. I can't imagine how a buyer could use that sliver of land. Incidentally, about five months after Dom's opened, I had a conversation w/one of the fellows from the engineering co. that worked on the store. The loading dock was supposed to face the...

Incidentally, about five months after Dom's opened, I had a conversation w/one of the fellows from the engineering co. that worked on the store. The loading dock was supposed to face the S & C Club, so that any noise would head toward a premise that's empty and unused at night. Safeway wanted a ramp up to the roof parking; to make space for it Safeway changed the dock orientation to face Foster.

BBQ Coming to Andersonville!

Andersonville Chamber tweets that Avondale's very popular Pork Shoppe "executes lease for former former Kingfisher space" at the north end of the Clark Street corridor.

YES!

Indeed, Edgewater needed a good place for pork. Hopefully, this team can finally make a success of this hulk at Edgewater and Clark, which has struggled for such a long, long time. And, speaking of the North end of Clark, the Norse is a great bar with an incredibly good beer selection. There really is good news from all parts of Edgewater, from the Andersonville neighborhood on the west to the Edgewater Glen business district along Broadway on the East side of Edgewater there has been a steady stream of good economic news of late.

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

That location has been “snakebit” ever since Felice’s Roundtable closed (Lord, how I miss that prime rib!) in the late ‘90s. Every restaurant since then in that space had been AWFUL and few lasted even a year. Hope Pork Shoppe “clicks;” won’t have to go NW to Rub or take the long slow slog down Pulaski to Smoque. And unlike Hecky’s (which won’t deliver s. of Devon), it’ll be nice to actually be able to sit and dine there!

Sifu Design Studio Facing Closure

Per Sifu: "Due to a shifty accountant, back taxes and fines have threatened to close our store. We had a payment plan worked out, but now the IRS said we have 10 days to pay our outstanding balance.

So, on July 26, the IRS is threatening to revoke our business license and close us down. We are trying to get an extention, but we can't rest knowing that the end could be so near."

They're trying to raise emergency funding HERE:
