Sheridan and thorndale bus shelter

Shattered again! There's still glass in the grass from last time. Stupid. I reported to 311 this morning.

  • Didn't see it happen, but both times now it's only been one plate of glass and the ad area. The first time looked like there was a fight and someone had been slammed into them and this time something hit the one pane only and shattered it. Definitely not hot by a car as the actual structure is sound.

  • sounds to me like gang vandalism

I walk my dog around and i see human excrements around the trees and a lot of alcohólic botles and garbage. Also this people wash their clothes from the water fountain and hang them in the play yard fence creating a Ńon pleasant atmosphere for the kids and families that play in the playground. Also a very safety problem is that vehicles are cutting throught the Park to avoid the traffic On Sheridan between Bryn Mawr and Hollywood to jump On Lake Shore going South during the morning rush hour, it is very incredible to see this drivers go throught the Park where people are walking, jogging etc. And last the amount of people asking for money in the milddle of the road On Hollywood and Sheridan its creating a safety issue for drivers that get distracted and to avoid this people to not hit them. hope that our Alderman take into consideration this concerns and Work to solve them, I already report them to the Chief of staff of Alderman Osterman!!!

Some folks do know all the shelters- that is true. But those only help for a night, if you get there early enough to get in. Its a lot harder to get someone off the streets for good. The last person I worked with, who hit nearly every point on the City's Vulnerability Index took almost 4 months. She was literally dying, and had strong advocates helping her navigate the system and it still took us almost four months to get her placed.

A great resource in the beat cop on Howard St, who knows all of the folks that hang out there. Last time I was there working with someone he stopped and explained how few options CPD has for working with this population.

If someone you know needs emergency shelter, the process in the City of Chicago is to go to the precinct or to a local emergency room. Department of Family and Support Services is then supposed to be notified and someone from that office is suppose to place the person/family into an emergency shelter.

Often though, that process takes a very long time and people become frustrated and leave before services can be found. There are different levels of shelters. There are emergency shelters with varying rules - some you have to be out in the morning and hope a bed is then available that night. The there are family shelters with more flexibility, and there are interim shelters to and transitional shelters. There are systems in place, but not enough staff and money to run them well.

Lastly, the is the United States, folks, we can't make people who are homeless, dirty, addicted or with a mental illness go somewhere else or lock them up because they make us feel uncomfortable. They do have to follow the rules and not be in places they shouldn't be and doing things they shouldn't be doing. But if they are just there, minding their own business, say hello, buy them a sandwich and a bottle of water and wish them a peace filled day.

Man with hatchet robs Papa Johns on Balmoral

Around 8 pm tonight we witnessed a man rob the Papa Johns at broadway and balmoral with a hatchet. With a ton of bystanders on the street calling police, workers and bystanders managed to hold the front door shut but he ran out the back door and ran east on Balmoral. Police were there in minutes and they just missed him running away. Police have been all over the streets/alleys looking for him. Am so thankful all the workers are physically okay.

  • The Trib has updated the article; it appears he no longer stole $200,000 but some indeterminate amount of "cash."

  • Arthur-thank you for getting this back to the matter at hand.

Whole Foods Construction

I recently moved to the area (Winthrop & Glendale) and while I am excited there will be a Whole Foods coming next year right near me, I am getting more and more annoyed with the late night construction. Is anybody else losing sleep/ going a little crazy? I swear it's 1:30 in the morning and I am hearing that truck backing up sound, "beep, beep beep!" Does anybody know if there's anything that can be done about this middle-of-the-night construction? (besides earplugs, got em!)

311 being unable & unwilling to intervene in a noise complaint, and advising people to call 911 instead is a MAJOR reason for reduced 911 effectiveness where it really counts. While the dispatcher is contacting police or FD to deal with a car alarm at 3 am, it can mean the difference between life & death for someone having a heart attack or stroke at the same time. Yes, dispatchers are trained to triage, but the time spent having to decide if something is an urgent annoyance vs. a life-threatening emergency goes a long way to explaining why you have a better chance of surviving a heart attack in Seattle or even some parts of NYC than you do here.

People do abuse 911, but it’s because the city doesn’t allocate its resources wisely enough to make 311 any more effective than an ombudsman’s suggestion box.

OK, here we go again with noise violations. As the New Admiral was being constructed from 2010 into mid 2012, there were MANY violations of this sort. If you're in the 48th Ward, forget about help. There was none for the Admiral violations. Deal directly with the city; document carefully; send complaints by mail (with tracking number) to the Commissioner of the Dept. of Public Health and to the construction company. Use a camera to record video with sound and put them on CD's for the City. (Keep your recordings). Keep posting about this issue and get the name of the construction company and get it on Yelp, too. In my area, the construction violator was Lend Lease...just a nightmare for 19 months. Crews would show up at 6:00 AM weekend days with power equipment. The Dept. of Environment was rolled into the Dept. of Public Health. You describe a violation of prohibition against construction between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM. Find the statute here:

Increase in air traffic over Rogers Park??

Has anyone else noticed an increase in frequency of low altitude commercial jets coming off the lake headed to O'Hare? After living 2 blocks off the lake for 15 years, this year we have noticed a significant change.

I have a friend who lives in the 41st Ward, where they are having big problems (see article below). She has done much research about how air traffic noise can be minimized with flying techniques and schedules. The problem is more severe there, but we do find it a bit distracting when you are sitting outside wanting some peace and quiet.

Just wondered if anyone else has noticed this??

WHY shouldn’t the writer report it? Because some readers might be squeamish? Sorry, but horror is in the eye of the beholder. One could always opt not to read the news--there’s a whole segment of the electorate who’ve chosen just that. But besides following the cardinal rule of journalism--the “5 Ws” we all learned in high school, much less j-school--reporting the manner of injury is illustrative of the consequences of such callous reckless driving and the risks (albeit rare) inherent in standing behind one’s car. Of course, the victim had a perfect right to be loading his car trunk from behind--we ALL do that, and there really wasn’t any way he could or should have foreseen that danger, since he was in the parking lane of a traffic-controlled street rather than, say, on the shoulder of a busy freeway, But, sadly, danger can come out of nowhere--and there are myriad ways our lives can be ruined or taken by a single selfish and reckless individual.

A human being was horrendously disfigured and mutilated in a particularly grim and ghastly accident. It was reality and it needs to be reported that way. This is 2014 and journalism has an obligation to report what happens. Even on TV, the news anchors, when showing footage of something especially distressing, advises people to turn away from their screens if they are too squeamish to countenance it.
Interesting that the movies of today glorify violence and show things that would have never made it past the censors fifty years ago. We are ----- as a society -------
    virtually surrounded by violence.
I don't understand why Joan M was so offended. This was journalism and accurate reporting. I happened to be very close to the area where this horror occurred, and I knew enough not to go any closer. The journalist was reporting the news as it was.

In calling, and speaking with the back room/receiving fellow, I was told that "the Manager said that we can turn on the compressors at 3:30 AM." Not so, statute declares 8:00 AM. So, the "ever-generous" manager allows a window of three, to three and a half hours, to sleep. And, she has said several times that she's is always concerned about the neighborhood. Such phoniness....I will take this to the City very soon.

The store has been a problem in its consistent violation of noise abatement statutes that require compressor(s) on the trailer(s) parked at the dock to be off -- an environmental noise abatement statute - between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM. The Carmen Winona block club allowed the store some slack and the manager agreed to a cut off at 11:00 PM. Last week, the problem was consistent with compressors on later than 11:00 PM and being turned on at 5:00 AM. Tonight, the young man told me that the manager's direction are to turn it off (maybe) at 11:30 PM and back on at 3:00 AM. Now, I ask you, since when does the ward and the city allow a business to rewrite statute? And, you will NEVER see medical people recommending 3-4 hours for quiet for sleep. This is an arrogant business and I already terminated my $150 per week in purchases. This store does large volume - let it hire more people to unload the trailer(s).

  • It's impressive how on top of things you are! I wasn't aware of the special requirements for SNCs. Are those available somewhere online? The land by the loading dock for Mariano's is still available, I believe. It's the narrow, deep parcel between the Foster portion of the Club and the Mariano's building. I was surprised to hear the Club hadn't purchased it because theoretically something could go in there that would overshadow or otherwise affect their property in a significant way.

  • I thought of the wrong lot. I can't imagine how a buyer could use that sliver of land. Incidentally, about five months after Dom's opened, I had a conversation w/one of the fellows from the engineering co. that worked on the store. The loading dock was supposed to face the...

Incidentally, about five months after Dom's opened, I had a conversation w/one of the fellows from the engineering co. that worked on the store. The loading dock was supposed to face the S & C Club, so that any noise would head toward a premise that's empty and unused at night. Safeway wanted a ramp up to the roof parking; to make space for it Safeway changed the dock orientation to face Foster.

And, speaking of the North end of Clark, the Norse is a great bar with an incredibly good beer selection. That location has been “snakebit” ever since Felice’s Roundtable closed (Lord, how I miss that prime rib!) in the late ‘90s. Every restaurant since then in that space had been AWFUL and few lasted even a year. Hope Pork Shoppe “clicks;” won’t have to go NW to Rub or take the long slow slog down Pulaski to Smoque. The Edgeville Buzz

I just read this article and I'm shaking my head. The author (and owner/publisher) uses the totally unnecessary phrase "as of yet" not once but TWICE in a piece that totals 8 sentences.

http://edgevillebuzz.com/news/man-drowns-near-hollywood-beach

It also contains punctuation errors, a spelling error, and, even though the headline is "Man Drowns Near Hollywood Beach," the final sentence leaves open the possibility that he may still be alive.

Sorry, but considering that The Edgeville Buzz is charging businesses for advertising, this is ridiculous.

I'm interested to know how people feel about this. Do people actually read these articles or just the headlines?

    WOW!

This borderline-hysterical string of comments from "idaslapternow" sounds very much in tone and wording like the response I received from the publisher of Edgeville Buzz several months ago when I posted a single critical comment on a particular article. That event left me scarred and bitter and with a raging vendetta against the organization, of course.

You're absolutely right, Danny Z. It's just my "personal distaste."

This is a sentence from a recent article. You be the judge.

"When firefighters arrived on the seen and they saw a head bobbing in the water about ten feet from shore."

Why would anyone wish to volunteer his services to a news outfit run by a guy who responds to criticism like you just kicked his dog and thinks this level of writing qualifies as "just fine?"

    I'm out. No mas!

Cookies and carnitas rocks!

Shameless plug for one of Edgewater's newest restaurants. Great food great guys that own it and they source their ingredients well and (mostly) sustainably. It's cash only so make sure you have some before walking in and it can seem a tad pricey, but that burger is fantastic!

  • Coffee shop is apperently going to open at 6am m-sat.
    Tomorrow?! Its about time!!

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

Why won't those harrassed file a complaint?

Adult Film Legend Tera Patrick to Conduct Reading at Women and Children First Bookstore

This should bring in a slightly different crowd than Jimmy Carter.

  • Michelle Edgewater Edgewater Resident: Love the neighborhood!

A feminist bookstore is the perfect venue for a book like this! Feminism is supposed to be about allowing women to express themselves and lead the lives they wish despite social pressures. No matter if it's stay-at-home moms, career-driven women, or adult film stars. When I hear a feminist put down pornography, to me that's equivalent to "s1ut-shaming".

  • Beautifully put Michelle! Wonderful!

Question: Should the Pride Parade be moved out of the neighborhood.

The headline is yge post. Should it be moved? Should any neighborhood have to deal with a million visitors?

  • Kathleen Pingelton Vegetarian,music-loving cat owner.

Good grief. Are we STILL talking about this?

  • This is ridiculous. Leave the parade where it is. Moving it downtown is just gonna F up traffic LBVS. The parade is not even that long. Ppl love it & have a good time. The area is no stranger to noise. There are bars everywhere & not to mention the cubs game days. Just deal with it for the day & move on.

New to area

Does anyone use Twitter heavily and have any recommendations to on who/what to follow on Twitter for neighborhood news? i.e., restaurants who tweet frequently, neighbors who tweet about Edgewater/Andersonville happenings, organizations and the like.

  • Al I. Not Defender of Cartoon Cows

I'd start with Benjamin Woodard's Rogers Park News account: https://twitter.com/rogersparknews

  • Quickercity Lover of All Things Local

Please take a look at my startup, Quickercity. It is largely Twitter-powered and pulls in/links to content from hyperlocal news outfits, local aldermen and chambers of commerce, restaurants, shops, arts organizations, etc., organized by neighborhood.. It is also highly-visual, so you're not just inundated with a constant stream of text. It's a work-in-progress, but I'd like your feedback.

Coyote Sighting

Twice in the last six days a coyote has been seen walking west on the 1600 block of Highland. Today's sighting was at 4: 30am while the other was around 5am. In both instances the coyote, medium size 20 to 25 lbs, walked down the middle of the street.

I was walking my dog at the time, but the coyote ignored us even though we were in clear sight. Nonetheless I will continue to make sure my pepper spray is handy and I think other dog owners in the area should also be on the alert.

Free T12 fluorescent bulbs!

Edgewater Workbench still has about 3 dozen T12 fluorescent light bulbs up for grabs! Some of them may be water damaged. We are switching our fixtures to support T10 bulbs, so have no use for these.

In the event no one picks them up, I'd love some suggestions on how to recycle them locally. Thanks!

  • at First Free? We're open pretty much 8am-4pm on weekdays. The office is 5241 N Ashland (right next to the church itself) which is where I work :)

Know No Limits to remain open

Latest communication:

Under new management, KNL is staying open, under the same name with the same staff, instructors, and trainers (if they so choose). Angie Frank, the GM of Cheetah will be running things, she comes with high praise from many people. I will meet with Angie tomorrow at 11am and likely be closing tomorrow 5-10pm. New Management wants things as they were with new and better
equipment and more of what we the staff and members want...

Target prices going up?

Is it my imagination or do the prices at Target seem to be creeping up and up? I actually bought cleaning products at Mariano's for less. Thoughts?

  • Catherine Animal Care Giver and Personal Organizer

Robin, what's a cartwheel discount and how do you access it? Also, where do you find the Target coupons? I've seen them in coupon booklets in the Sunday newspaper.

  • robin in WRP Tired and Cranky

    cartwheel.target.com
    coupons.target.com
    commonkindness.com
    mambosprouts.com

There are tons of other coupon websites; these are the main ones that I use. I also get coupons from Target via text message; a few weeks ago they had $10 off $50 for food. Target allows any combination of three discounts (cartwheel/manu coupon/target coupon)

Marty's Martini Bar Looking for a name.....

Marty's is looking to rebrand our Community Giving Back Program. That's the program where we donate the bar on Sunday afternoons to different groups, charities and organizations and they get the profits. Any ideas on a new name for this program?

Thanks for your input,
Marty Rogo
Owner
Marty's Martini Bar

  • I like "Charitini." Or the "Movers and the Shakers (not stirred)".
How does one get in touch with this program? We at Democracy Burlesque (we perform right across the street at Mary's Attic) is a performance group that also donates part of our proceeds to "Causes celebre." I'd love to talk about a way to partner up somehow with what you're doing...
