Suburbanite in the city!

We are between Hollywood and a Glenwood on Ridge and would love some feedback on the area. We work early hours so are going to the car and walking dogs between 4-5am. We typically walk on Glenwood, Early and Wayne. I'm aware you need to be alert at all times no matter where you are in the city but am just curious about others general vibe with the area. Lease is up soon and we haven't been able to explore like we hoped but love our place.

“Racial undertone,” Ben? WTF? Just so happened that the reason we got speed bumps and intersection-plantered roundabouts a decade or so ago was because of a rash of speeders within a several-block radius of Senn, and also to prevent drive-bys. I’ve lived in Edgewater/A’ville long enough (since 1979) to learn that gang activity tends to be higher in the immediate vicinity of public high schools and that gangs come in all colors as well (e.g., the Insane Unknowns having been a particularly vicious white one).

And I didn’t say that there’s no crime--I said that in the immediate area the original poster delineated, vehicular traffic was a more prevalent problem. As to Ridge “(never) going to change," perhaps you missed all the threads about it (including proposals for over-or-underpasses) and alternative pedestrian-friendlier/traffic-jam-reducing streetscape management.

  • I have to agree with Sandy…I don't know how you are able to leave your house and interact with society Ben, if what you think Sandy typed has racial undertones. I'm really just confused as to your reasoning. Please let us know what Sandy typed that was a racial undertone. Oh well…another person quick to point the finger.

I should clarify that I'm not advocating pepper spraying anyone preemptively. I pepper sprayed some kids after I was attacked, pretty bloodied up, and actually lost consciousness for a little bit. So this was a way to end the assault without resorting so some other weapon that would have done more serious damage. I hope that those kids are on a better path by now. If not, they are bound for either prison or the grave and at least it isn't by my hands.

As to charges, the police confirmed that I'd done the right thing and encouraged me to pick up some fresh pepper spray. I'm a big advocate of the stuff. It's saved me from being a victim and/or living with blood on my hands more than once.

I found Cappleman's answers predictably waffling and just plain inaccurate. I asked the first question:

"Why have you done not hing for Clarendon Park in four years when the gym floods after every rain".

It took him two minutes to say nothing can be done until something the former Cuneo Hospital site. A curious collusion if non-facts said in a way only a politician can say it.

Wrong.

The $6Million he is pushing for the "people plaza" in front of the Riviera is from TIF. It is an adjoining TIF district to Clarendon Park which means it can be ported over, in whole or in part.

Cappleman can do it in a day, he has had four years and has done absolutely nothing for the park or the kids who need it. He lied up there at mic.

To Cappleman a benchless plaza with a curious "wheel of fortune" sculpture is more important.

That project is on hold by the planning department downtown, Cappleman forgot to mentiin that.

It is not a plaza but a glorified cul-de-sac at $6......million.

Q. Got Wheels A. No

Did anyone else notice a car was relieved of its wheels at Leland and Malden this morning?

Be advised...if you see someone removing all of the tires in a haphazard fashion it may not be a curbside brake job.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Local Artist

I was thinking the same thing is a possibility Capt. Kirk.

    But on the other hand....

Some people for whatever reason put some fancy rims on the plain 'ol cars.

A second point....Toyotas are #1 in car thefts because the parts are so easy to fence.

Either way locking lug nuts are pretty cheap, only have to put one on each wheel. If you get in a flat while out of town in the country the the repair guy will be like "thats why I never live there....".

  • A quick google will show that older Hondas and Toyotas top theft lists in most cities (there are regional differences). Why? They're inexpensive and popular. When entire cars are stolen, they are chopped up and sold for parts to the 1000s of young adults emulating the Vin Diesel movies.

Healthcare

Hi, I am a student journalist.

I'm writing a story on healthcare, specifically on how the Affordable Care Act has made the system more efficient or less efficient (for you). Obama has mandated a streamlined medical health records system using technology.

So, I'm looking specifically for a patient who HAS had difficulty or has NOT had difficulty with needing medical documents transferred from one hospital (for many reasons) to another hospital.

It this applies to you, I'd love to speak with you and share your story.

If your interview is used, it would be published on a Chicago news website.

Please contact me for more information.

Thank you!

I have a tiny sliver of respect for the Celtic Clown because I can tell he has lived here for quite a while, disagree with him on a lot, but this is his neighborhood too and he is entitled to his opinion. As well, and it pains me to admit it, he has good creative writing skills. Undeniable by myself even while being creatively skewered in a public forum of sorts.

The Irish Pirate holds no punches and goes for full effect, at times though he has let it slip, he spoke up for Sarah's Circle years ago when the other UU regulars were whining about it for instance, I remember that.

It is apparent to me that he avoids EB because the troll variety on this page lack such skills or self-control, why be associated and roll with straight up trolls throwing around schoolboy insults it would be senseless diversion. Besides he is in a place where people who like to follow him can find him. EB is all trolled up not EB's fault, not NBC/Comcasts fault it just is.

I don't mind the trolls its a low-level annoyance, somehow we can still share whats going on in the neighborhood, it is just white noise, like traffic commotion outside the window. It will ebb and flow.

If we feed the trolls it will flow, if we ignore the trolls it will slowly ebb. But there will always be trolls.

Please don't feed the trolls, unless you are a troll. Let them feed on one another and lets make this little corner of online Uptown as friendly as we know the offline Uptown is.

stopping yellow book drop offs

any one have any idea how to stop getting these phone books? my entire building is on the opt out list for the last 10 years but every year they drop the books in front. i know some people want them, but we don't!

i have called every year to say stop, but it hasn't... any insight would be appreciated.

  • Mei

I feel all these unsolicited mailers should be illegal. If you don't want it and didn't ask for it, they're littering! Their company taglines should be, "Here, you throw this out."

I do use the newspaper adds to line my students' desks when we paint or do something messy, and phone books become paper mache. Also good for drying flowers. However, I will now try opting out. There's never a shortage of paper for student crafts if you pay attention

  • Our package delivery guys and mailman use the phone books to hide our packages. So far (5 years) no thefts.

Every "hacker space" develops its own character and culture,it would be interesting to see what ours would look like in Uptown, we have some talented and creative people with all sorts of skills for sure.

Here is a link to the EveryBlock post which inspired this post:

And here is a link to a hacker space on Elston Av. that is up and running:

The name "hacker space" can be a bit misleading at first sight, at least it was for me as its something I associated with nefarious cyber behaviors. Thankfully it is not.

So please have a look and share any comments and/or ideas about bringing this idea to Uptown.

Sid you are completely wrong. Low-income subsidized housing is subjected to much stricter rules and penalties than those who rent market-rate. It is to the extent that it goes too far in many instances. If you are even related to someone committing a very minor offense, you could lose your voucher. If a mother's son that she lives with, for example, gets arrested for a non-violent offense like selling marijuana she is subjected to lose her housing and be evicted with little notice. Even if it isn't her that did the crime, even if she did not know her son was involved with minor offenses and even if it was a one time offense, she then is forcibly removed from her housing. Such standards certainly don't apply in regular rental buildings. Your friend James Cappleman and Uptown menace Cindy Anderson fought to implement an even more punitive, racist and draconian policy at 920 Lakeside where family members are banned from the building for even the most minor scraps with the law. During Christmas and Thanksgiving, families had to eat outside because of the policy. Children of those dying of cancer couldn't even visit their loved ones. This kind of backwards policy doesn'tt exist in any regular rental building I know of.

Some how in Sid's little FOX News world, evicting people, incarcerating record amounts of citizens, closing schools, lowering the minimum wage, tougher laws on ex-offenders gets people out of poverty. I see the reverse.

More important and potentially greater long-term impact depending on the scale and scope is the intention to offer discounted studio apartments for artists.

The whole "Entertainment District" scheme for Uptown is paper thin and meaningless without a resident creative community beyond the incidental artists that already live here. Yes we have artists in Uptown, not more and by my guesstimation less then say Edgewater to the north. The low-income housing in Uptown is not generally the kind that is sought out by artists. The market-rate housing is too high generally.

The artists, visual/performing/music/etc. create the content that creates the buzz that creates the demand for smaller venues. Smaller venues are the heart and soul of any "Entertainment District". A few examples...Austin, Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans....all small venue based, and with the possible exception of Memphis they are magnets for artists, artists are magnets for qualitative cultural development of a neighborhood.

Beyond artists housing another approach is to find a way to develop artist workspaces, there are quite a few underused spaces in Uptown that could work.

Here is the article from the Chicago Gallery News, CGN is not widely read in the general public but is very widely read in the arts community so yea...its good buzz.

Eventually (1928), the two sections were merged and exhibited in the former Ivan Morozov mansion at Prechistenka, 21.[2] In 1948 the State Museum of New Western Art was closed down by a decree signed by Stalin due to its allegedly bourgeois, cosmopolitan and wrongly oriented artworks. I knew yesterday AM (at the bus stop) that the large number of responding fire trucks and ambulances indicated a high rise fire - the CFD sends lots of equipment in those cases. Her building was built post-1978, so it was sprinklered throughout according to statute. Because of that, the fire was confined to the woman's apartment. Still, it's so sad as we consider her likely fear and terror. To me, a building fire is high on the scale of terrifying incidents.

Alderman Cappleman, who served as the emcee for the concert (fittingly, the theme was Salute to Uptown), announced to the three-hundred-plus people in attendance that he was working closely with Mayor Rahm Emanuel to see the rebirth of the Uptown Entertainment District with a complete renovation of the Uptown Theater. He said that he expects all of the financing to be in place by the end of 2013, at which time the renovation and restoration would begin. Cappleman said that the total project cost is $63 million, and that the entire project would be expedited to be finished in two years.

Translation: By the end of 2015, if all goes as planned, the Uptown Theater would be restored to its former glory once again. Combined with a rebuilt Wilson CTA station, the next three years should be transformational for our neighborhood.

Opened in 1929 as one of five Loews metropolitan area “wonder theaters,” Kings Theater, now owned by the City of New York, is undergoing a $95 million transformation into a high-tech, multipurpose performing arts center that is already stimulating new development in the neighborhood.

According to Benjamin M. Branham, executive vice president of the City Economic Development Corporation, which has overseen renovation of Kings Theater, the number of businesses in Flatbush — a central Brooklyn neighborhood with a population of 100,000 — grew 34 percent between 2000 and 2012, compared with citywide growth of 11 percent. In the same period, he said, jobs in Flatbush grew 7 percent, compared with 4 percent citywide.

    ....

Kings Theater was one of five “wonder theaters” in New York and New Jersey built in 1929 and 1930 by the Loews movie theater chain. The Kings, designed by the architectural firm Rapp & Rapp, had interiors by the Rambusch Company that were inspired by the Palace of Versailles and Paris Opera House. With its reopening, four of the theaters — the Jersey, in Jersey City; the Paradise, in the Bronx; the 175th Street Theater, in Upper Manhattan; and the Kings — will be used for entertainment. The fifth, the Valencia in Jamaica, Queens, is now a church.

Closed in 1977, Kings Theater was seized for back taxes in 1983 by the city, which made some structural repairs. For years the theater remained vacant, while it deteriorated from a leaking roof, water damage and vandalism. The city considered a variety of proposals to revive it, including a 1999 plan by Magic Johnson to convert it into a 12-screen multiplex.

Our active Beat 2024 liaison has news about the condition of the underpasses at Foster down to Wilson. Ed's latest:

Fyi - Note someone listened and Tent by the Dog Park is gone. Here is my summary of what has happen since we started the new OutReaches in December.

Positives: Foster Underpass is still clear. Wilson Underpass has fewer people there; now about 5 persons in there with 2 tents before counting in nearby park or hills 12-15 plus 5-6 tents. People and tents in Park way down near zero. Hills by bridges have no people now, versus before at about 15.

Belongings stored up on bridge by Lake Shore Drive are down to about 5 % of what it was before. Just to remind you, in case you have forgotten how bad it was this summer at Lawrence Bridge .

Negatives: We have not yet impacted the South side of the Lawrence Underpass. We have eliminated the tent man's three towers of belongings from the Park but he was back last night with his plastic tent up late last evening with small amount of his belongings in shopping cart. He was fine foe about a 10 days. He has always been hard to move out.

We still have a lot more to do to solve this continuing problem . On a good note, Ald. Cappleman has submitted Illinois law (605 ILCS 5/) Illinois Highway Code to the City's Legal Department determine how we may use this law to clear the underpasses. If does what we think (outlaws camping and storing material in or along the highway bridges) it could be a big help in clearing the underpasses and moving into the City's Homeless Program shelters. We still need to get DFSS to do their work so that it complies with the City's Homeless program.

Know No Limits Gym Closing December 31st

Was informed today the gym is closing at the end of the year due to the building being sold and the lease not being renewed. It's very interesting that they continued to sell memberships knowing the building was listed for sale or was under contract. They are making it right with the members but I find their business ethics interesting (not the employees but the owners).

Gunshots by Broadway and Wilson

Driving up Broadway, heard about four gunshots and saw people scattering away in between Wilson and Leland. Around 8:20pm or so. Looked like it was right outside Gigio's Pizza. Be careful everyone.

Helicopter hovering above Broadway & Holiywood

Began at 6:45am. Loud as heck... Does anyone know what's happening out there?

  • Sarahdonis 20 year neighbor

It was a really ugly car crash, at Sheridan and Thorndale. A pick-up's front corner was smushed in pretty good, and the whole front end of the other car was smushed nearly all the way to the drivers seat. There were no people at the scene when I walked my dog around 8 am, the airbags were deflated, though, and the drivers's compartments appeared intact.

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

So sad--no time is the right time for a horrible accident, but right around Christmas is especially awful. Hope the passengers fared better than the vehicles. I had been hoping, given the length of time the choppers were hovering, that instead it was just Santa doing recon about who’s been naughty or nice....

Is Uptown Safe for Pigeons?

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141216/uptown/pigeons-are-back-uptown-residents-sound-off-on-pesky-birds

From the top....

UPTOWN — If Alfred Hitchcock were scouting locations for a sequel to the 1963 classic "The Birds," Uptown would be the ideal setting.

That’s because the birds — more precisely, the pigeons — are back.

“The pigeons are back,” said Jeffrey Littleton, an Uptown resident, “and they’re back in big numbers.”

Of course, the pigeons never really went away. But the scandal involving Ald. James Cappleman (46th) and a neighborhood woman known as “the pigeon lady” came to a head two years ago ..........

Lawrence Bridge Clearence

Is it just me or have there been more Rig vs. Bridge encounters at Lawrence?

I have seen three in less then two weeks.

The only thing that has changed about the bridge is the warning bar on the east side "westbound lane" is gone.

It is actually two bridges the west span is lower clearance, the warning bar suspended by chains was set to the height of the lower bridge.

Maybe that has something to do with it?

  • did he die?

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Local Artist

Peter...no fatalities as far as I can tell. The biggest risk ofinjury is probably the folks at the busstop and shrapnel.

    NKOT...

I don't think the bar has been removed as much as wacked off by repeated collisions.

Wanted: space to hold group meditation programs

Hello, I'm an integrative medicine practitioner on staff at Rush, & have a private practice in Andersonville.

In early 2015, I'll be facilitating a 6-week meditation series for people who would like to learn more about the mind/body connection, & explore a variety of meditation skills to help reduce stress and enhance well-being.

I'm looking for a beautiful, warm, extremely quiet, cozy, carpeted space that's large enough to comfortably hold 15-20 ppl who will meet 1x per week for 6-weeks (most likely held in the evening or wkend).

If you have any creative ideas, please contact me.

Thank you and happy holidays.

  • RTG_RP Doing things.

It's not carpeted necessarily, but you may be able to use some of the props there to make sitting more comfortable, but maybe you can rent some space at Yoga Tree.

  • Also in the non-carpeted, but potentially conducive category -- Cheetah Gym on Broadway. They used to hold a Community Yoga class on Sundays--but discontinued it for some reason. In any case, they have a nice big group exercise room with lots of yoga mats in different sizes & there currently aren't any classes in there on Sat & Sun afternoons. Not sure what all of your needs are, or what their rules are, but they're an extremely nice group of folks there, and it might be worth looking into.

At the time there were people for and against:

-Harrassing a lonely senior citizen to the point Cappleman's supporters were screaming, threatening and spitting on her.

-Then introducing a new law to double fines to $1000. for feeding the birds with a chance of jail time. Lonely seniors and a few mentally ill are the main target, the bill was buried no other alderman wanted to touch it.

- After repeated "in-your-face" confrontations between the Ald. Cappleman and the senior citizen she allegedly pushed Cappleman into traffic. This was a Churchill moment for the alderman that was only exceeded in intensity by the knife attack later on that did not include a knife.

-The senior was charged, sentenced to community service by an embarrassed judge, and basically driven from the neighborhood and the Asian community she had long lived with as a result of constant the constant pressure on the street.

- Ald. Cappleman then arranged for an Indiana farmer with a love for shooting live bird with friends to come to Uptown and fire a net over the birds. Shooting live birds for fun and sport is illegal in Illinois...and transporting live birds from out of state to shoot is illegal in Indiana. The Indiana authorities investigated...not sure what became of it my guess not much.

I still agree with 60660Gal u dig. In a court of law i.e. defamation of character/slander against the diner Jessie would have to explain where she got flyer she posted with this thread. This thread is a perfect example of how people "believe everything posted on inter-net but I won't swing my pendelum to find out if Jessie is lieing. I will leave that fact of responsibility up to the posters of this thread.

Clothing Donation Drop Boxes in Edgewater

I have a lot of clothes I'd like to donate to charity, but since I've moved to EdgewaterI haven't seen any of the clothing donation drop boxes that were ubiquitous in Lakeview.

Can anyone in the Thorndale-Granville area tell me of any clothing donation drop boxes that are nearby?

Thanks!

Dumpster disturbance

There has been a white uhaul rented from elite that has been dumping construction debris at odd hours on Mondays. Last night it went on from 8:30-9:30pm. It is so loud it echoes through the alley and sounds like firework bangs. Last week it was 5am. They have woken our daughter up on both occasions. Last night we called the cops-they came and left and then the guys proceeded to not only continue to dump but intentionally smash things. The noise ordinance is from 9pm-8am. Why was this not stopped? What recourse do we have? Thanks for your help!

Also notify the Dept. of Environment, which was folded into the Dept. of Health a couple of years back. Environment is housed in the office section of DePaul's building at Jackson and State (southwest corner). Environment is on the 2nd floor, I believe. Or, look it up on www.cityofchicago.org then to departments and then Public Health. You can send an email with the facts to the Commissioner/Public Health (with photo attachment) and he'll pass it on. Make it exacting with facts and businesslike (I've corresponded with him - he's detail oriented). Also, the noise section is from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, depending on the issue. Fly-dumping is absolutely illegal. And, for those of you who live near alleys in which the commercial waste haulers (i.e. Waste Management, etc.) pick up, they can't do pickups before 7:00 AM. If they do 1) call the company and tell them the allowed starting for hour for allowed noise and 2) notify Environment.
