A Fowl Question

By chance...would anyone know if it is legal to keep a peacock bird in the city limits?
Just one....maybe a rooster later.

  • I don't think they make very satisfying pets. The great Southern writer Flannery O'Connor raised peacocks for many years and what I mostly remember about her essays describing them is that they are beautiful but mean.

Of course, I don't have any cash money on me & declined his request. I hope this does not become a common occurance. I should have called the store to complain I suppose.

I wish people in Andersonville would stop giving money to the homeless. I know people feel sorry for them, but there are plenty of social services; giving them money just invites them to set up permanent camp in our neighborhood. The one I'm thinking of specifically used to hang out by the eastern wall of Jewel and beg for money; when he got enough, he'd go buy beer and drink it right out on the sidewalk (making sure to leave the empty beer can on the ground even though there's a garbage can 20 feet away). I talked to him once and he told me he had a permanent place to stay, and not a shelter, either.

He seems to have migrated south a few blocks since the summer...now he sits in front of the market around Balmoral/Clark.

Convenience Stores on Granville

There is apparently two opening up, one of them in the former Royale Cupcakes place. We have around 4-5 as it is in that section of Granville-do we really need MORE covenience stores? I know it's better than empty storefronts but still. I don't get it.

One thing at least they put a nice awning to make it more appealing. But the lottery kiosk near the window makes it tacky.

  • hazelg Longtime Edgewater resident

This is a new location for an old convenience store that was located next door to the el station and had closed up. Evidently they had a profitable business on Granville before or they would not have come back to re-establish their business. They were the most popular convenience store of all of them. I can see why they came back as I patronized them almost daily and they were always busy. I don't see how the rest of the stores survive though.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

They put huge "play lottery here!" signs all over their windows, disappointing that they don't try to make it more appealing at least. I never understood why that would look attractive.

I know for Revival they had a community meeting about it,not sure if there was one for this store.

Hit & Run @ Lakewood Between Thorndale & Elmdale

If anyone saw a hit and run this morning between 9:30-110:30 am on Lakewood, between Thorndale and Elmwood, please get in touch! This car was very damaged by a driver who left the scene without leaving information. Police report is filed, we are looking for any witnesses who may have seen the responsible vehicle. The damage is just under 2k and because it was a phantom driver (and we don't have collision...) our insurance company will not help us cover it. We are counting on our amazing Edgewater neighbors to help us be vigilant so this person can be held responsible and not do this to others.

  • Ugh. This happened on my block a few weeks ago. When I spoke to the police officer, he said he sees this every day, and it is most likely the result of the driver texting while driving. Sorry this happened to you.

  • This makes me sick to see. I have no information for you. But I'm really sorry this occurred. You don't deserve it.

  • d3 NOH

nothing too useful to add other than I once witnessed a horrific hit-and-run in progreess and 911 didn't want to take the info because I didn't own the car. It was a college kid doing an extremely sharp and fast complete turn-about and backed right into the parked car, then kept on his way... #citythatworks

Painter needed

Good Morning All,

Could anyone recommend a reliable and affordable interior painter?

  • Dirk A. Gould 10+ year Resident and Promoter of RP Real Estate

I would highly recommend Jefferson Koegel. He painted my entire home a couple times and I referred him to about 25 clients. All 25 sung his praises. He is especially good with vintage units that need a little extra attention. He spends more time prepping than actually painting sometimes, so that the finished product looks amazing. His cell is (773) 710-6780

  • Adam G. Brand new resident of Edgewater Beach

We've been using Drake Painting with excellent results. They got a very good review on Angie's List, and were a previous Service Provider Award winner. We tried them once for a small project, and have used them again. They were great.

Ordinance 11-4-2830: Loading and unloading operations.
No person shall undertake or cause the loading, unloading, opening, closing or other handling of boxes, crates, containers, building, materials, garbage cans, dumpsters or similar objects between the hours of 10:00 P.M. and 7:00 A.M. in such a manner as to cause a noise disturbance within a residential district or within a noise sensitive zone.

I've never had people be rude to me at the PO, but it is slow. I like going to the Uptown PO because it's such a fine example of WPA architecture, even though it's farther away. It would be a shame for the building to be torn down, or turned into condos.

  • I Had To Say It Reality does not equal negativity.

Walk in there with a tie and overcoat on. I got immediate service at the pick-up counter. Probably thought I was there to shut them down or something. A no justice/no peace march isn't going to solve the problems there.

Dear Jeffrey,

Late this morning, an individual was shot from a gang-related shooting on the 4500 block of N. Magnolia. He later died at Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital. I've requested an increased police presence in the area while I work with the detectives and the commander. They are reviewing camera footage from police cameras and other surveillance cameras in the area. As always, if you see something suspicious, do not hesitate and call 911 immediately.

While more police presence helps curb crime, it's not enough. We need to do more and offer more alternatives for our youth in our community. I have helped many youth programs secure City funding and support them in their programming and fundraising efforts. After talking to other elected officials and organizations in the area, a few weeks ago, I asked a number of youth organizations to participate in the creation of the upcoming 46th Ward Community Youth Forum. At this forum, youth organizations, community leaders and elected officials will come together to talk and create a plan of action that will respond better to the needs of the at-risk youth in our community. Any ideas or suggestions you have or if you want to help, please contact Caitlin at Caitlin@james46.org or stop by my office during open office hours Monday evenings between 5 pm -7 pm to chat with me.

I would like to also encourage you to attend your next CAPS meeting where the commander and myself will be present to answer any of your questions. Click here for information about CAPS meetings in your area. Additionally, I'll keep you updated on the 46th Ward Youth Forum as we get closer to the event.

Best,

  • FGFM What the Cappleman!

The problem Cappleman has is that he and his allies used to blame the previous alderman for everything, but aldermen can't control the cops or crooks.

  • San @ Buena New Resident

I do understand, and agree with you, that alderman can't control anyone's behavior and I was not talking about him, specifically. It's an issue, however, when an average law abiding citizen has to weigh whether it is safe to venture through their neighborhood or temper their everyday activities. We are all tired of it. Live and let live. I'm not feeling much understanding and tolerance for bad behavior these days. No excuses or justifications. Heard enough gunshots..........

Project high rises raised, scattered sight housing and housing vouchers in nice neighborhoods. Gangs from the south and west sides are now neighbors.
