Hey everyone, I've been living in the Uptown area for about a year and a half now and I'm looking to get a little more active on Everyblock and in the community. I just emailed Cappleman's office to volunteer some of my Graphic Design work as well as the office of the 48th ward too.

This survey has no questions that glean identifiable information in it whatsoever. I would say it's more confidential than a survey any company would send you to complete. The companies ask for things like emails and phone numbers, stores shopped, transaction numbers, etc. This survey will know less about me than the store I last shopped at.

The mouthy one kept saying that they had a legal right to be there, he also called me stupid several times. They refused to leave. I called the landlord and had him on the phone; I offered it to the young woman and she said, Bad word here, I'll break your phone." People...be smart and don't admit people to your buildings whom you haven't invited or whom you DON'T know. They insisted that they were admitted. Four people to see one resident? Sure, one talked to a resident (maybe) and the other three roamed around

The police came and the lead officer wisely asked me to step aside (yes...I was ticked off). The mouthy one spewed lies, the female added her comments and four other cops came into the lobby. The officer reiterated ALL that I had told these four. he asked for IDs; the mouthy one didn't have any, said that he was new to Chicago and didn't know his address. The 2nd mouthy guy, who called me a racist several times (sure...and my hubby is Black Jamaican...so that's pretty funny) had a suspended license.

Descriptions:
Female, AA, slight build, about 5'5" tall, medium complexion and hair color.
Mouthy guy: AA, slim, short hair, darker complexion, very nice looking, white jacket and pants, about 5'10"
2nd mouthy guy: AA, about 5'11, slightly more muscular, dreads pulled back in a ponytail, brown pants and jacket and a knit caps over the dreads
3rd guy: AA, chunkier build, about 5'10" and 180 pounds, dark gray jacket, short hair, no hat.
They finally left under duress from the police.

These alternative companies tell their "rep's" that they can do all kinds of things that they can't, such as trespassing. They recruit people who really need income and who are told to ignore protests. I feel for these people trying to make a living - but they're doing it in all of the wrong ways, starting with trespassing and ending with refusal to leave a property.

Do a Google search...this company has nothing but bad reviews!

I grabbed my cell and keys and stepped out into the hallway, and pulled my door closed. Three guys there, saying that they were "doing follow-up." I told them I was NOT a customer, had never spoken to rep's from their company and that they would have to leave. They were joined by a 4th person, a young woman. While I talked with the mouthiest, two of the guys were knocking on my neighbors' doors. I said that it was private property and they had to leave. They refused. I called 911 in their presence; the 4 walked to the elevator. I took the stairs down to the 1st floor (no, I don't get into elevators with hostile invaders). The elevator was on another floor - where I suppose they were knocking on other doors. Finally, they came down; a neighbor had come home and I asked for a 2nd call to 911. I also called 911 again. I will do a 2nd posting with the rest of this message.

Coyote Sightinh

I was driving home yesterday about 11:15 PM on the drive and spotted a coyote about halfway between the Lawrence and Foster exits, as you drive north. He was back from the roadway on the lake side of the Drive, just standing and watching the traffic about 70-ish feet from the roadway. I really hope that he didn't try to cross. I didn't see any people; the park closes earlier than my passing by there. The coyote was actually quite beautiful; I hope that he had dinner that wasn't comprised of pets, etc.

A lot of people know that making and showing movies (from silent to present day) has been a big part of Uptown's history, but the Peoples Church illustrates so well how the creative heart of Uptown as expressed in many different "new" media has been a part of our history too.

Preston Bradley broadcast an an amazing and inclusive message from The Peoples Church—which was in a sense carried from his radio show to television when Irna Phillips's "The Guiding Light" transitioned from being a radio series to television in 1952 to become one of the longest-running TV dramas of all time. The Wikipedia entry totals the broadcast history—radio + television—at 72 years! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiding_Light

Window Guy at Sheridan and Argyle

What's with the dude who sits at his open window on the top floor of the building at Sheridan and Argyle? He sits up there in front of an old CRT TV, whistling and shouting at passersby. Seems pretty sketch.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Resident/Artist

He is the Good Humor man.

Is there another answer you are fishing for?

  • Probably mentally-ill. Mental illness is pretty "sketch"- for the inflicted person. Show a little compassion.

Also, maybe the guy is just fed up with all the blatant crack-dealing going on outside his crib. What's up with that? Seems pretty sketch.

  • There was a gentleman living in the building on the SW corner of Seridan/Argyle who was creatively vocal standing outside talking into a microphone (real but not working). If he wasn't on the street with the microphone, he was upstairs with his window open talking. I haven't seen him in a while, but I assumed it was because they vacated that building to renovate. Maybe he's back home. I never saw him bother anyone.

I'm glad that someone had read and followed through with my Facebook suggestions on turning the dead trees into works of art instead of turning them into mulch. I had been writing about it for a few years. My suggestion was to allow the after school matters program or an artist that didn't have the money to purchase blocks of wood. I've been told twice by two different cops my license was invalid. The beat cop in 24 (a real d'khead) gave me a ticket for something unrelated, because I challenged him on this fact, in fact. And it turns out, he's wrong. His ticket was also bogus and thrown out.

'How do I get my license and registration corrected if my name or address changes?
Within 10 days of changing your name or address, you must notify the Secretary of State by visiting a Driver Services facility or by writing to the Driver Services Department, Central Services, 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62723. If you wish to have a new driver's license reflecting the change, you must visit a driver facility and pay a $5 fee. To change your address, you can use the online Address Change Notification to transmit notification of address changes to the Driver Services Department. Please be sure to include your Driver's License or Identification Card number and registration number. Who's great idea was this? I called Alderman Pawer's office to complain and they said I have to call Osterman's office because Pawer doesn't take over that stretch until next year (hello, confusing). All they need to do is walk out to Argyle and Broadway in any afternoon to *SEE* how bad it is. Also, I do not intend this as a bikers are wrong post or anything like that. I'm pro-bikes in the city. Just think that the city planning needs to be better thought out a little with better signage and notices of new changes.

It was the only part of my reno I GCed myself and my own GC wanted to hire him for other jobs. That was somewhere around 160-175 SF and the demo work was done and I did the sub-floor. The "clear grade" (no knots in wood, and possibly longer boards themselves) was $1-2 more /SF than standard grade that most use these days.

I wish people in Andersonville would stop giving money to the homeless. I know people feel sorry for them, but there are plenty of social services; giving them money just invites them to set up permanent camp in our neighborhood. The one I'm thinking of specifically used to hang out by the eastern wall of Jewel and beg for money; when he got enough, he'd go buy beer and drink it right out on the sidewalk (making sure to leave the empty beer can on the ground even though there's a garbage can 20 feet away). I talked to him once and he told me he had a permanent place to stay, and not a shelter, either.

Convenience Stores on Granville

There is apparently two opening up, one of them in the former Royale Cupcakes place. We have around 4-5 as it is in that section of Granville-do we really need MORE covenience stores? I know it's better than empty storefronts but still. I don't get it.

One thing at least they put a nice awning to make it more appealing. But the lottery kiosk near the window makes it tacky.

  • hazelg Longtime Edgewater resident

This is a new location for an old convenience store that was located next door to the el station and had closed up. Evidently they had a profitable business on Granville before or they would not have come back to re-establish their business. They were the most popular convenience store of all of them. I can see why they came back as I patronized them almost daily and they were always busy. I don't see how the rest of the stores survive though.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

They put huge "play lottery here!" signs all over their windows, disappointing that they don't try to make it more appealing at least. I never understood why that would look attractive.

I know for Revival they had a community meeting about it,not sure if there was one for this store.

Hit & Run @ Lakewood Between Thorndale & Elmdale

If anyone saw a hit and run this morning between 9:30-110:30 am on Lakewood, between Thorndale and Elmwood, please get in touch! This car was very damaged by a driver who left the scene without leaving information. Police report is filed, we are looking for any witnesses who may have seen the responsible vehicle. The damage is just under 2k and because it was a phantom driver (and we don't have collision...) our insurance company will not help us cover it. We are counting on our amazing Edgewater neighbors to help us be vigilant so this person can be held responsible and not do this to others.

  • Ugh. This happened on my block a few weeks ago. When I spoke to the police officer, he said he sees this every day, and it is most likely the result of the driver texting while driving. Sorry this happened to you.

  • This makes me sick to see. I have no information for you. But I'm really sorry this occurred. You don't deserve it.

Mechanic Recommendations

Hi EveryBlock neighbors!
I'm looking for an affordable mechanic nearby that might help me with some car issues. Does anyone have any recommendations?
It seems to be my exhaust... I think it might have came lose after hitting a speed bump or something (my car is very low to the ground) and it's making a very loud noise. Thanks four your help!!!!!

Helicopters on Montrose and Sheridan?

Two of the biggest, blackest, loudest helicopters I've ever heard/seen flew right over my apartment building about 5 minutes ago. I'm just west of Broadway/Sheridan on Montrose. I checked the President's schedule and he's supposedly in the White House right now. Any ideas of who it could be?

Flower store

Does anyone know why the flower store closed?

  • If it the place that I am thinking of, I think the owner may have retired or something. Again, I maybe be thinking of another florist, but this was located on Bryn Mawr just east of the L and on the north side of the street. I hope things are treating him well!

  • Scott that's the one , thanks

Fireworks

Does anyone know what the fireworks barrage we are experiencing is all about?

Very cool that Loyola puts on a great show for the students and their parents.

It's a great contrast to all the negative things happening in our neighborhood of late.

  • Edgewater sucks....
