Christmas Tree Disposal

Do you know the proper way to throw out a real Christmas tree? Can it be put in an alley next to the garbage/recycling cans?

My neighbor asked me this question and I'm curious what the answer is.

  • A dry Christmas tree next to a building (especially one with a wooden porch) would be an arsonist's dream. I'd suggest taking it out to the garbage man when he shows up, if possible.

  • This website offers tree pick up for recycling for $15. I was under the impression that your building is fined for trees left outside in the alley. Many in my building used this service. http://dtrt-recycling.org

1142 W Irving Park Speed Camera

Is anyone else receiving suspicious tickets from this camera? I've not gotten 3 tickets from this camera over the span of 3 months. Let me tell you, I never speed through there. I always double check my speedometer before crossing onto the block that the cemetary is on. On top of that, It's almost impossible to be doing 11 over the speed limit through there on the way home from work during rush hour.

  • I'm not sure. I just know outside of baseball season the pedestrians are few and far between.

  • L

There is a teenie, tiny "park" there called Challenger Park. There has been lots of press about how this "park" made it easy to put a speed camera there.

Snow Removal Rec

We're looking for a snow removal service in Northcenter and would prefer to use a small, independent business. Thank you for your suggestions.

Wishcraft you did nothing wrong in my opinion. I've only been a member of everyblock for a few days & I see calls to " mute " various members. And people appointing them selves ministers of spam & ministers of muting. I thought this was supposed to be fun & informative. My initial comment was meant in jest.

Stolen vehicle

I watched a flat bed truck race up my alley (3900 block between Hoyne and Hamilton) with a black Jeep looking vehicle hanging off the back at 3:20 am,Monday Jan 23, 2012. When I ran to the alley and put a bright flashlight on the truck, the driver made a very wide turn westbound onto Hamilton knocking over several dumpsters in the process.

I called 911 and gave a description of what I saw, when I turned the scanner on, I heard the call go out across the 19th district, but didn't hear another thing about it.

If this was you vehicle stolen, contact me via EB and I will get back to you.

  • Anyone heard where they are dropping them recently? Mine was stolen a week ago from River West, have been searching craigslist and just drove up and down Wolcott along with Diversey and Damen.

    Kevin

  • My 2011 Ford Fiesta was stolen from the 3900 block of Oakley last night or early this morning. What's funny is this is the second time this happened to me on this street, last time was a black 2002 Jeep Liberty back in 2006, and it happened on a Sunday-Monday as well.

Looking for radio (car) repair hobbyist/shop

I have an early 1990s car with a radio that seems to be acting up. Or, the speakers need their amps looked.

I need someone that can bench-test both.

I tried Yelp and Google. Neither are helpful. I guess it is a dying craft.

Anyone know of a hobbyist or electronics shop in Northcenter?

  • Ravens Yes.I can fix that.

You might be all wet on this one. I have replaced many car stereos for various reasons similar to yours. If hear any kind of noise from the speakers that means they are ok. Everything else is inside the stereo. I think a junk yard is your quickest & least expensive answer. They are fairly easy to remove. Hope that helps.

Tone down on the alley honking

I ask that people give the horn a rest when pulling through an alley, especially before the sun has even shown its face. Slowing down and looking is a great alternative to blasting your horn and making unnecessary noise.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

That's why they call them accidents. Watch out for the other guy, pedestrian, child, stroller, pet, car, bicyclist alike. You can't have too much safety, or be too careful.

  • Bob Kastigar 15 Years North Park, bike rider, retired

Accidents can be avoided by being careful.

Excessive noise can be avoided too, by note constantly honking your horn every time you leave an alley,.

Thorek Hospital hidden fee

I went to see a Doctor who's office is located in Thorek's facilities about a month ago only to receive a bill from Thorek for $143 just because the doctor's office is there. This is ridiculous, I'm sure my doctor pays rent and now I have to pay too?!?! Has anyone else had to deal with this? I don't have $143 just to give away for my FREE WELLNESS CHECK-UP

The doctor's office resubmits with correct coding (or re-billing a charge that shouldn't have been unbundled and was ultimately denied because it was) and it gets reprocessed for the difference.

Additionally, if a provider is in network, they are held to specific guidelines under their contracts with the insurance company. This includes what they're allowed to charge up front (prior to the claim being submitted), so it is very important to read your plan of benefits and ask questions when needed.

2.Space is a hospital clinic ("facility") with hospital staffed employees which may or may include the Dr, nurse, or PA. -you get 2 bills, One for the physician and a second one for the facility.

When you call to make an appointment ask the upfront if there's a facility fee or not. If in doubt get it in writing when you arrive.
This has been legit and under the radar for about the last seven or eight years. Because it is a revenue generator for the hospital, it has become more popular. As such, it has come on the radar of patients, insurance, and physicians who refer To other providers. Drs. don't want their patients getting double billed either. This was a cover article of medical economics last month. There's a good chance that charges Would be waived if you contest it with the hosp admin
I've been to Thorek alot and had great experiences.it was not sot great up until a few years ago. Most of the doctors are excellent, hard-working and dedicated -If you haven't been there recently you'd be surprised. The entire plant Has been renovated, Including the emergency room, laboratory, radiation oncology, MedSurg floors and outpatient OR facilities. There is an ophthalmologist and brand-new dental suite. There are several new physicians in the outpatient professional building which is connected-Check to see if their offices are independent with no facility fee or -other. Most of the nurses in the hospital are relatively new hires within the last five years and are young fresh and vibrant.
This is an interesting little community Hospital which has survived changing times for over 100 years -worth asking for a tour or just going over for lunch and walking around to get a feel for the place. It's definitely a convenient option for outpatient procedures and services. Easy free parking

Shortly after being elected, Pawar clarified that he does not provide city services and went on to state that he is a “legislator”. (1) City Council meetings are very important for any legislator, but just as important are committee meetings, where legislation is crafted, debated, amended, discussed and presented to the public.

A recent study conducted by, Chicago Tonight, indicates that Pawar rarely attends committee meetings that he is assigned to, with an attendance rate of 20%. (2) Being a self proclaimed legislator, Pawar knows, or should know, how important attendance at these meetings really is. Instead, when questioned about his chronic absenteeism, Pawar said that he is busy providing constituent services (2), even though he previously described the belief that alderman provide services as a “myth” (1). Other aldermen provide constituent services, all the while, still attending committee meetings.

In May of this year, Pawar was quoted as saying: It’s still a 16 hour day. I’ll be up at 5:30 or 6am, go for a run, then have some breakfast and go to work at Northwestern. After work, I’ll meet with constituents, elected officials, community groups.” (see the below posted images of “Longshot Alderman not shying away from City’s problems” from Inside Booster, authored by Pat Butler dated May 9, 2012)

So, the alderman does not provide services because he is a legislator. When asked why he is not fulfilling his duties as a legislator, he is busy providing services and has put legislating on the back burner. Maybe the real reason for the degradation of services and the abhorrent attendance record is the fact that the alderman is too busy working at Northwestern.

Why hasn't there been anything about the coming Via Lima Peruvian restaurant on Lincoln Avenue?

Seems like every other new restaurant in North Center/Lincoln Square gets covered by DNA Info or Chicago Reader or Chicago Mag, but there's silence on this one.

  • Jane Spec North Center resident

Thanks LisaMV! I have learned something new! Much appreciated.. I honestly didn't think there was antisemitism hiding in the new Peruvian restaurant, it was just right after that news story had come out that I saw it and thought oh no! All that money spent on this ceiling and this has the potential to cause a real stir..I will see the design in a different more positive light now :)

Feedback on Mariano's prices?

Wondering if anyone has done comparison shopping of prices between Mariano's and Jewel/Trader Joe's/Whole Foods. I am mainly interested in organic produce, imported cheeses, hormone free chicken, fresh fish, organic eggs...and also other stuff like cereal, pasta, condiments, tea, etc. The Mariano's on Western near Addison.
I didn't even know they have organic produce, but they do....
Thanks!

  • Mariano's is out of their minds in prices.. COSTCO COSTCO ALL THE WAY.. Whole chicken should run no more than 1.10 a pound.. .99 on average.. A whole chicken should run you no more than 5.00... Meat... Mariano's... I'm not sure who is supplying these guy but 20.00 a pound...

Crab prices are in line but Cod for 12.00LB Shrimp from 18-24.00 LB ? Out of your mind .. People wake up.. Chicago Fish Market on Elston or Isac Stein on Fulton will have these at half this price.. Always make sure you're NOT buying FARM RAISED shrimp.. Biggest scam...Aldi and Costco have Whole Perdue chicken ALWAYS AT .95 A POUND..

I'm sorry, but I don't consider any Mariano's to have an open layout...they are near all the same: a grid to get you lost.
