Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • Thanks everyone. My attorney's office has contacted the Texas DMV. My witness got the plate right. They won't release information to the attorney w/o a subpoena or updated police report. So we're working w/CPD. (though it may take awhile) Thanks for keeping your eyes out.

Kristin I am sorry you were injured and the driver behaved illegally. Sounds odd but it is encouraging to me to read how many people stepped up (and are stepping up) to help correct this wrong. I hold you in my thoughts for a speedy recovery and am grateful that Chicago turned out some really decent folks in the just the right place to help you through.

Awful water taste - Chicago apt bldg

Hi - I live in an old Chicago apartment bldg and have lived here for a number of years. The bldg is probably 80 years old. Recently the tap water has tasted really bad. I cannot figure out what it is, but it really doesn't taste right...a strong flavor. I know I should invest in a good water filter but have not been able to afford that. Any ideas where I can find out what's going on with my water? My landlord is relatively OK, but is very hesitant to invest any time or money unless absolutely necessary....

I can always taste filtered vs non filtered. I don't see it as a waste of money whatsoever, nor do I find it to be expensive. Filters produce measurable, scientific changes measured to NSF/ANSI standards. Your basic water filter is tested against ANSI 42 for appearance and often ANSI 53...

I can always taste filtered vs non filtered. I don't see it as a waste of money whatsoever, nor do I find it to be expensive. Filters produce measurable, scientific changes measured to NSF/ANSI standards. Your basic water filter is tested against ANSI 42 for appearance and often ANSI 53 for health contaminant standards, and you can look up exactly what, scientifically speaking they are filtering.

If you're running the water and the taste is changing after a minute, it's likely because your pipes are galvanized and full of 50 years of rust and crud. Your incoming water pipe into your house is likely also made of lead. Your basic pur/brita PITCHER does not filter lead though. However, the faucet mount ones they make do (both pur and brita), as well as a long list of other items. Also AFAIK Pur pitcher filters have a better particulate filter vs the Brita (they measure this by a "class" classification--again in the data sheets), which is also why the Pur filters take longer for the water to drip through though. If you are looking at Pur, skip the model where it's the largest one with the spigot that you flip for water--it has a design flaw where it creates an air lock that doesn't let the water actually get through the filter (literally hundreds of reviews complaining of this on amzn, not sure why they even sell it. learned the hard way o that one)

If you put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, the chlorine will naturally dissipate without a filter but it takes a few days.

Thanks, everyone! Did not know this. Am using Brita now until I get a better filter. Thank you.

constant strange propane or "lighter-fluid"-type smell all hours outside

Cullom Ave near Francisco/Mozart and even a bit on Montrose. noone's at Horner Park at 2am... unless the smell doesn't leave. someone thought maybe the outdoor grill at Montrose Saloon? (haven't been there and this is my first summer here). could be jet fuel but i doubt it... any ideas? to be sure, i called the gas company and they couldn't detect gas, at least...

East Riverbank riprap

It was exciting to have access returned to the east riverbank this weekend.
I can't say like what I saw when visiting the river. The white riprap is not aesthetically pleasing. The bright white is blinding as it reflects the sun. It also replaced so much space for greenery... place used to have a magical feel...
Is this the final product? Any chance that riprap can be covered with soil / planted?
The said there would be more paths / access but this kind of feels like a concrete wall...

The whiteness of the rocks will go away as they fade in the sun and from rain/snow/ice.

Our beaches are full of trash and glass

My family and I were recently at Montrose beach (before the weekend of the riot) and we noticed an alarming amount of glass shards and trash blowing around. My family and I were recently at Montrose beach (before the weekend of the riot) and we noticed an alarming amount of glass shards and trash blowing around. Since when did our beaches become dumping grounds? I spent most of my time collecting trash that others left behind as well as over 20 pieces of glass (which looked to be from broken beer bottles) as well as plastic utensils, broken plastic shovels, deflated balloons, etc. Some of the glass was even buried under the sand where my son was making a sand castle (luckily nobody was cut). When I asked the lifeguard why there was so much trash blowing around and left behind, she mentioned that the city has cut back on having the city come out to clean our beaches. Another problem is that the trash cans were at least 50 yards from where the water and I think people are too lazy to walk the distance to throw away their garbage. At the least, why can't the city provide signs that tell people they will get fined for littering (although who will stand watch if we can't even afford to have clean-up crews?)? Regardless, its a shame and extremely depressing. If people continue to ignore this problem (or continue to contribute to it) our beaches will be destroyed in a few years. Please help keep our lakefront clean. Any suggestions as to what we can do to help with this problem are welcome. I don't necessarily want to spend my weekends patrolling our beaches and cleaning up other peoples garbage. Has anyone else noticed this problem? What can we do? I don't plan on taking my family back to the beach this year since my recent experience was such a mess.

Everyone, please visit http://greatlakesadopt.org/ and volunteer to clean up!

You can join an existing event, or create your own event. You not only pick up trash, but you sort that trash for research purposes. You can also test the water quality. The Alliance for the Great Lakes is a wonderful organization specifically working on this issue. Join an Adopt-a-Beach Event Today!!

There are existing ways to help besides just observing problems and ignoring them (by not enjoying Chicago's beautiful lakeshore). Take part in your community!!

  • CJL that's an old statistics mantra. Unless one is in the circle of Target's store placement strategies, we'll never really know, will we? And whether my offering information about Target is "worth bringing up" or not is "worth it," saying that was rather rude imo.

  • TamaleChica, are you privy to Target's business strategy? What is your evidence that Target is not opening this store because of the Route 11 bus, or that the Route 11 elimination was even considered at all by Target?

And I did not comment on the difficulty of shlepping items, nor did you. You only said that there was no way to get there except by car, which is not true.
Nobody has argued that the elimination of the route has not affected businesses along Lincoln. There is no reason to make up facts to support your argument.

Lost White Cat Near Berteau and Leavitt Late 5/23

Hi Neighbors,

My neighbor lost his cat Friday night and has been searching all over.
It is an all white adult male, no tags. He is shy is likely hiding under someones porch.
Call James 773-263-3615

Might respond to Mugsy, you know how cats are.

  • Robin in Rogers Park Owner of Cats in the City, LLC

CarrieAnn779, can you get kitty checked for a microchip? Thanks for taking him in.

  • Are you still looking for your cat? I saw a beautiful all white cat around Cullum and Bell day before yesterday. It ran off when I called it.

Police cars & cyclists at Lincoln & Irving Park

There were a couple of police cars and a group of cops talking to some bicyclists at Lincoln/Damen on the north side of Irving Park by the Starbucks around 5:00 this evening. There was no ambulance, though I could have missed it, and didn't seem like there was a car involved. Anyone know what was going on?

  • UptownGirl Moved, so technically I'm now RavenswoodGirl.

A young man (looked like a teenager) was cuffed and placed in a police car. I was sitting in the Starbucks, and another patron said he thought the kid had stolen a bike or attempted to steal a bike. The officers were talking to the bicyclists and looking at bicycles for quite awhile. No one in the Starbucks seemed 100% sure what was happening, though it went on for awhile.
