Nightly disturbances in alley south of waveland, north of addison, between hamilton and hoyne.

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been woken up every night by very loud, seemingly deliberate noises (garbage bin shaking, metal screeching, pounding) coming from my alley. At first, they were consistently occurring at 4:30am. The past few nights, I have been hearing them anywhere between 2am and 4:30am.

Normally, these alleys are very quiet. These noises in the wee hours of the morning are easily the loudest during any hour in that area with the exception of maybe garbage and recycling pick up.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

and why Chicago changed its 911/311 calling rules a few years ago. If calling 911 in an instance like this, after telling the specifics of the situation, do let us know if 911 or 311 should have been called, or if a patrol car or officer was sent to check up on the situation. I would try to lock down the trash can lids, but I would NOT try to hold the trash can lids down with a large rock or brick, since this could be used as a weapon or used as a tool to break into a garage or home, break windows in homes or cars, etc.

Disturbance at Irving and Lincoln: man wielding a pole

Anyone have any information about the man at the intersection of Irving Park, Damen, and Lincoln? About 10 cop cars were there dealing with a man wielding a pole.

  • It was at around 1 in the afternoon. Don't know what happened, but it was cleared up in less than 30 minutes.

  • What kind of pole, how long? I encountered a shady character while out walking the dog yesterday late morning on Lakewood/School - he was walking while carrying some sort of wooden or metal "pole" maybe a foot & a half long but doing these crazy "moves" with it like one...

I encountered a shady character while out walking the dog yesterday late morning on Lakewood/School - he was walking while carrying some sort of wooden or metal "pole" maybe a foot & a half long but doing these crazy "moves" with it like one would do w/ nunchucks. Nobody was around and I was nervous he would use it on me - we would've passed each other but I crossed the street. He was a short African American, wearing baggy jeans and an American flag bandana on his head.

Day-time Home Burglary and Night-time Garage Thieves

On Sept 11th our home was broken into by criminals and several items were stolen with rooms and walls vandalized in the process. This was done between the hours of 9am and 1:30pm, but most likely around 11am. This is when a neighbor saw a white van parked behind our garage in the alley.

The police are investigating, but in response, we installed some Dropcams around the house and 36 hours later we caught a man in our yard at 3:30am. Below is a link to the video. Watch starting on the upper left side of the screen as he begins in our neighbors yard and make his was to the alley.

I had a similar set up of motion detectors added to the back of my house and next door business after I got into a fist fight with a man I caught in my back yard in June . I don't ever want to fight like that again but I will if I have to protect my family and home . So like Gio said the noise will surely scare these tresspassers away . The first system is a silent type that only sounds an alarm inside my home , that's how I was able to catch this guy . I decided it's much safer just to scare them away . It was installed by my security company . Works great and also has a timer on the siren . Very professional system .

Recent Mice Infestation in our Building

Just moved to the North Center this summer in the neighborhood that borders the river near Campbell and Pensacola, I was wondering if any other neighbors have had recent mice issues in their buildings or homes. My management company and veteran building neighbors say it is the first infestation they have seen. Several neighbors have moved out this month some due to the problem. Has anyone had any success with eradicating mice as a renter, if so any advise you can pass along about my rights or steps I can take to get the management company moving on fixing the problem.

  • Unregistered, sounds like I'm in the building across Campbell from you. I've gorva different management company. Neighborly1- I've seen mice in the home even caught a live one one. The flies usually come when. A mouse dies in the wall. Its very unsettling, usually about 2 dozen flies and many are very slow and lazy from gorging on the mouse corpse. Its really gross and and can be accompanied by a bad smell depending on how close the dead mouse is to your unit. My management co knows and is not taking steps to remove the bodies or eradicate the infestation.

  • Once there is nesting in the walls, it's almost impossible to single handedly stop them. I know there's a tool, RIDDEX PLUS. You plug into the walls and will emit some sound that drives away rodents/pest bugs . Also you can spray peppermint around the house. I do this anyway...

You plug into the walls and will emit some sound that drives away rodents/pest bugs . Also you can spray peppermint around the house. I do this anyway with having a doggy. Not trying to bring fleas around. Apparently it's a fix for rodents too. I honestly wish there was a way to have the management company step in. (Found out in my building they are willing to pay for "renovations" from 1 to 2 bedrooms, take out the dining room, and charge 6-700 more on rent. But are completely uninterested in eradicating this rodents issue. Long less gaining another dumpster.) Can't help but feel alone on actually fixing the problem, huh.

Addison porch robbery

I called police Friday, about 2:00 p.m.
after witnessing a male, black, with short dread locks, about 20-25 years take a package off a neighbor's porch then walk east on Addison street. He hung out at the bus stop at Addison and Wolcott, let the bus pass by, then crossed the street to take the package. As far as I know he wasn't caught.

  • This has happened to us 3-4x in the year that we've lived in Roscoe Village and a couple of times, it's occurred within minutes of the UPS truck leaving. The truck must be followed.

  • ChiJen, that is exactly what is happening. These thieves track delivery trucks, knowing that they will leave packages in unsecured locations if no one answers the door. I avoid UPS deliveries if at all possible because of this. I've never had UPS do this.

If you are having an item delivered by UPS delivery and suspect you will not be home to receive it, leave alternative instructions when you place your order for an item: "If no response at delivery address, please ring any apartment in bldg (or specify another apartment #)" or "If no response at delivery address, please deliver next door (give exact address)." I believe if you give an address close to yours, they will deliver as requested. At the very least, leave an instruction NOT to leave the delivery in an unsecured location.

Let's take an easy example over and above the sheer number of advertisements you've been posting: You call these information sessions Events, yet you continue to place them, not in the Events section which is clearly marked when you enter your information, but in the Neighborhood News section. Why does your organization think that this requirement does not apply to it?

  • Thank you @spamalert for being the know all and be all for this community post.

I will be sure to follow your enlightening posts and remarks further. I'm glad we have someone to protect our board with their own views of what is advertisements and what isn't.

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

As an avid cyclist in this fair city, and one that stays attentive i.e. free of headphones and/or eating while cycling when possible, i saw my life flash before my eyes the other day in the face of one abominable pit of death on Lincoln Ave two blocks north of Addison. Pothole-talk is as fun for Chicagoans as weather-talk, and this doozy would be the equivalent of a level five hurricane coming off Lake Michigan. Heading southbound, i found myself dreamgazing at the lovely stores, watching for the ever-opening car door and whatnot when an abyss appeared before i had the chance to think, 'has the earth opened to literally swallow me for my sins?' Crossing the Great Pothole, hearing my rear wheel smack it's craggy crest, i flashed back to washing the car with my dad as a toddler, to summer camp in '94, my first makeout session involving a game of spin the bottle where i had to kiss two other not so desireable girls to get to the one i really wanted, and the other day in the kitchen at work chatting nonchalantly with gossipy coworkers. It all came back. In terms of sheer depth, this has to be the meanest, most unforgiving man and woman eating pothole i have seen in my many miles logged in the city. For a moment after realizing i had survived the crossing, i wondered if i should go back and see if there was lava at the bottom, as if this had been a portal to the earth's core. Some may say, 'you're being hyperbolic." Maybe i am. Maybe i am...but just wait. When you witness it for yourself, you will say, 'i now know what my soul looks like because i went outside myself, and looking in, man, what a life it was.'

It is unclear as to whether any of the people in the park called 911. Someone who came upon the scene minutes later did call 911 but was not an accurate witness since they only saw the car drive away. It is incredibly scary but I think there are many facts missing in this case. It is a reminder to call 911 as soon as possible.
