Recommendation for kitchen cabinets / granite countertops / painter

Hi, I have seen a few posts recently about general contractors and rehab, and although those recommendations may be adequate for what I am looking for, I thought I would post with exactly what I want done and see if anyone has a recommendation. I am looking to have the kitchen cabinets refinished/repainted (from brown to white), have granite countertops replaced (most are basic pieces but there is a large island with a sink, outlets, etc), and have about 2400 sq. ft. painted. On this same note, I am curious if anyone has any opinions on whether refinishing/painting cabinets white is worth it or if it is just better to get all new cabinets? The cabinets are about 6 years old and in good shape, I just like white kitchens.

For the painting, I prefer someone that can do everything themselves, such as preparing the space (moving/covering furniture, taking TVs off the walls and putting back on, etc.).

Perhaps the painting and recommendation for the kitchen upgrades would be different people altogether? Or maybe the painting walls and cabinets would be same person and granite someone else?

I have a painter recommendation. If you email me I can give you info.

Thoughts on Bad Dog being Gone?

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

  • They were always understaffed for lunch on that patio. Only one server for a LOT of tables on weekdays. Also, their kitchen vent clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while and there was a grease stain about 8 feet long along the exterior wall facing the patio. Just gross.

  • Botkin Kinch: the knife-blade

I got the worst food poisoning of my life from their ahi tuna tacos. It was a very memorable experience.

Newbie wants to know the necessity of 4WD/AWD?

I have three kids and I am trying to buy a family car possibly a mini Van. I am wondering if I need to buy a 4WD/AWD mini Van or will I be ok with a Front wheel drive/FWD mini Van?How important is AWD/4WD in the alleys in the north center area? My garage opens to an alley. I welcome your feedback.

  • Yes Shawn, I'm sure that the AWD and all-season tires contribute greatly to how well my Countryman handles in the snow/ice. So far I have not needed any assistance in getting out of my on-street parking spaces this season. I only recommend this car to people with no more than one child and it MUST have AWD!
(I don't understand why anyone would buy an SUV/crossover without 4WD if they live in a snowy area.)

  • D R

Also as an aside, as one of your key variables for your vehicle is the ability to fit three car seats across in the second row, take a look at the Combi Coccoro car seats. We have two in our sedan, with enough room between for an adult (sorry grandma) to sit in-between. We have placed a Britax inbetween as well.

One of the Combi's selling points is that you can fit three of them across in a typical sedan.

Missing campaign signs

Someone took the two campaign signs off our front lawn as well as our neighbors, very odd.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Not odd, just standard Chicago politics

  • Who were the signs for?

  • Before or after the polls closed? If it was after, please let me know who the signs were for, I'm voting for him/her next time. I'm sick of all the campaign trash that candidates leave all over the neighborhood, especially outside polling places and around the el stops, and never bother to police up.

Butt of your joke?

While you may think it funny to deposit cigarette butts on someone's stoop, I find it tragic. Neither my wife nor I smoke and we don't appreciate the deposit of cigarette butts made on our front porch. Please kindly make a timely withdrawal. Oh, and an apology might be warranted on this one.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

Again, it was a specific act of someone (one of my wonderful neighbors) collecting butts and placing them on my stoop as if my wife and I were their long lost owners. I'm passive aggressively shaming them here as I don't know who the culprit(s) was/were. Neither my wife nor I smoke.

  • Oh, I miss understood. That's just wrong!

Donating magazines, any ideas?

We have several magazine subscriptions and are looking to donate many months worth rather than recycle them. Does anyone have any ideas of where we can donate them in our community?

  • Also, the Lakeview YMCA takes donated magazines, I think.

Alley snow removal...

so today, I notice a fellow with a small front-end loader come cruising down the Leavitt alley between Waveland and Addison. I try to stop him and hand him some cash to do my alley (Hamilton, same stretch). But we had a language barrier.

Then it hit me. Someone on this board must be paying for this service.

Any recommendations for snow removal, this late in the season? Or, for next? I think our alley will pitch in for this type of service next year.

Thanks in advance.

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

Thanks all. I think the reality is that we will need someone to push it north onto Waveland and into a waiting truck or something. Our alley seems to be snow-locked but for SUVs.

  • Aimzer North Center mama bear for 10 years and counting.

Our alley is working on coordinating something for next year - someone on the block has an inside scoop. I'll see if I can get info.

What to do w/ old furniture

Hi, quick question to anyone who has some advice, aside from Craigslist where do you recommend putting up used furniture for someone to buy/take. I've done Craigslist before for smaller items, but I don't live with anyone and I'm a little wary of having strangers in my home to pick up furniture. Any ideas? I have to get rid of living room furniture and am getting to the point of just wanting someone to take it, I don't even really need money for it. I thought about Salvation Army, but a friend told me that they are extremely picky about the furniture they take. Thank you for any help!! :D

  • For what it's worth I haven't found the Salvation Army to be all that picky. They don't want furniture that's falling apart, torn, etc. They want the furniture to be something they can sell to somebody. But the guys that pick it up don't examine it in detail and possibly reject it. They just pick it up and put it in their truck. I've given all kinds of furniture with absolutely no issues.

  • EEH

I donate all my gently used no-longer-wanted items to Brown Elephant. They are always very nice, you get a receipt for your taxes, and their mission is top notch.

Looking for a fish fry in the area.

Hey folks, anyone know of a good fish fry in the area??

  • Inactive user

The Irish American Heritage Center on Knox has all-you-can-eat fish fry during Lent on Friday nights - the rest of the year, it's single order. Their building is beautiful and there's a lot of other stuff going on there - dance, music, art - worth checking out.

  • Definitely try St. Ferdinand's! Not an "all-u-can-eat" but very good size portions, with all the sides! Weekly theme night with entertainment for the whole family!! But above all, the fellowship is what makes it so popular! Nothing like being a part of the true meaning of the Lental season!!

"Dibs"

I'm proud of this neighborhood for not doing the 'dibs' thing. Am I right??

  • Ok, not an hour but until I got sorta tired and wet :) ... I'll be back out every time I go outside, chipping away at the street, though. DID witness two neighbor-jerks who put out chairs despite being asked to not be parking jerks.

  • Bri

I saw quite a few dibs along Grace (near Damen) while walking to Trader Joe's. The streets are clear now and there is plenty of parking in that area!
