Excellent, now the rooftop owners are suing the city. This costs all of us money. When

are they going to quit bellyaching and produce a product people will buy...without being parasitic? Look at the restaurants all around the field. Do they need to have line of sight? Seems like they view it as a right.
All I know is that it is wasteful to sue the city - and the taxpayers are left footing the bill.

  • MikeyJoe Rocket scientist

I'm still trying to figure out on what grounds the rooftop owners can sue. If the Ricketts family accepts that 17% of $0 is zero when all the rooftops go bankrupt, then that's their prerogative. What's the penalty for violation of 6.6 by the Cubs and/or the City? It's not stipulated in the contract.

  • painhertz butterknife ninja

Arbitration. According to the contract all disputes will be solved via binding arbitration. The rooftops' threat to sue never existed. Most like it was easier to say than "we're going to bindingly arbitrate you".

Need a good computer repair service

Hello fellow frustrated computer users:
I need to get my laptop repaired (keeps freezing, won't respond) and would like to know if you have any recommendations. I'm thinking of taking it to Computers Zone USA at 1134 W. Belmont. Has anyone used them? I live in North Center and want someplace I can get to by El. I can drive if I have to.
Thanks for any help.

Not sure if you have already taken care of this, but before doing anything, I would recommend backing up your files to an external source (Hard Drive, Thumb Drive etc) Also once you back your data up, you could try restoring your computer to factory defaults using the supplied restore disk or restore partition (if you are comfortable doing this) It's free :) If your computer is freezing and wont respond, its either a hardware issue or a software issue. If software, wipe and reinstall Windows and all of your software (this is what the repair people will do.) If still problematic then send back to original manufacturer for repair or to one of their certified repair centers.

email direct if you have any questions

Chicago North Center Jobs Group may leave Nextdoor.com, remain on Facebook

As a reminder, I may soon seek to remove the Chicago North Center Jobs Group from Nextdoor.com on or about Labor Day Weekend. With enough encouragement, the group could stay. If such a group could be created or at least promoted on Everyblock.com as well, that would nice as well.

The Group was based on the simple notion of neighbors helping neighbors, with the idea that job seeking should never be a lonely experience. Among other things, the hope was to tap into the so-called "hidden job market" at a neighborhood level.

The Chicago North Center Jobs Group is still on Facebook, currently at 65 members: https://www.facebook.com/groups/679871012048118/ I may remove "North Center" from its name, maybe replacing it with something representing the broader Ravenswood/Lincoln Avenue area.

Martial arts/Self defense

Hi,
Does anyone have any good, affordable recommendations for a place in the area to take martial art or self defense classes? Thank you!!

  • Bryan Duffy Apartment Locator & Problem Solver

Degerberg Academy of Mixed Martial Arts is great for beginners and all types. Gets you physically fit and mentally aware. More girls than guys in some of the classes, too. Classes 6 days a week at two locations to choose from. First class is free. After that its about $100-$120/month.

  • My son (6) has been taking classes at ATA in Ravenswood and I really like it there. It's not too "beefcakey" if you know what I mean, and they also keep running Groupons (There's one right now, look for Go2Karate) so you can try out a bunch of classes for next to nothing ($20 for 10 classes or $30 for 16 classes, uniform included).

Replacement of Home Water Main to Street

Has anyone had to do this in the past, and if so, would you mind sharing your total cost and your plumber's information if you'd recommend him.

We're just learned that we need to increase our main line due to a current renovation, and hoping to get the main line replaced late summer/early fall.

  • I'm unrelated to the Blantons, but highly recommend J. Blanton Plumbing as well. They did a bunch of work for us and it was top-notch. Plus they are great people to work with.

  • Steven A North side rocker

Around $7K to run copper from the B-Box (the valve by the sidewalk) to inside the house. Power Plumbing did an excellent job. The man that came to install the water meter commented that it was an excellent job.

Seeking teen helpers for block party on 8/23 - will pay!

Hi everyone, I'm looking for teens to monitor a dunk tank from 2-4p and 4-6p on Saturday, Aug 23 Each two-hour slot will be paid $20. We want to ensure no young kids enter the dunk tank, so they will act as an extra set of eyes. Our block party is in Northcenter near St. Ben's. Please message me if you know a teenager (14+) looking to earn some money and can responsibly monitor the tank (we will provide a chair, they can bring a friend too).

  • SK Khalsa Yoga Lady

Our son is almost 15 and would love to help. Very responsible and great with little ones. How do we contact you?

  • Love livin' in Northcenter 7 year North Center resident

Wood shop space

I will be moving into North Center in Sept. I am a part time woodworker and Bodhran maker for the past ten years in Chi. I am losing my shop space and I am looking for 200-400 sq ft in NC, Ravenswood, Roscoe or Lincoln Square to continue my work. I am happy to share space and tools or rent outright. Any information to this regard is much appreciated.

Pay It Forward at McDonalds at Lincoln/Ainslie/Western! I've been tagged!

Just got home from the McDonald's Drive Thru with a happy neighborhood report! I placed my order at the box and when I got to the window was informed that my order had been covered by the driver in front of me! So much not great stuff happening and regular annoyances--thought I would share personal knowledge that we also have some ridiculous generous people rolling around as well.

Random firework/gunshot/backfire sound North Center

For the past month, I'll say, a rather new sound happens on a semi-regular random basis. It sounds like a one-off gunshot and happens between the hours of 8-9am and then in the evening between 7-9pm. I can not trace it but sounds like it is coming from the alley North of the 2100-2200 block of Warner. Anyway any clues as to what it is would be great. It's just startling and weird. Thanks.

  • I realize this is an old topic, but I just wanted to state that the sound continues. It definitely started months ago. I live near the corner of Berteau and Leavitt, and I work at home. The sound happens at all hours of the day and night. I'm stumped - something people are driving over? Construction? It would be nice to at least know what it is!

  • tbf

We believe it is a car back-firing. It happens daily at the same times. It definitely is not gunshots.

Police Action at Byron and Leavitt Last Night??

Hi All - Does anyone know what was going on last night around 10:30p in the alleyway off Byron between Bell and Leavitt? A friend said he saw alot of police and a HAZMAT team removing things from a house. In addition, there were some men in handcuffs. Anyone have any additional information? Why the HAZMAT??

  • I understand it was a stolen car. According to a neighbor who spoke with police the car was stolen in Des Plaines. The car was set on fire and the two guys who stole it tried to get away in a second car.

  • Indy's Mom northcenter resident

I am a witness who called 911 -- stolen car or insurance fraud. An accelerant was used to start the fire which may require hazmat. The car horn was going off in 30-second increments for about 2 minutes and we were afraid someone was in the vehicle in distress. Luckily the car was abandoned and we did hear the "getaway" car racing south down the alley but no word whether the people were found or not. Fire department showed up within 30 seconds of 911 call. Great job CFD.

XIPPO (Bar @ Damen/Grace) - Noise Out of Control!

These Xippo patrons are out of control. I can hear them coming a block away, then they congregate....And get louder and louder. I've called the police but of course they're gone by the time/if they show. Plan on letting the alderman know about it.

  • MayorOf47 W. Lakeview/Roscoe Village

Kevin, among the problems with Xippo/Revolver/RussianMafia is the location. If it were a decent place,it would still be a neighborhood place not a destination. It's not a welcoming place for locals to stop in for a drink or have a bite despite all those outdoor tables. I've been there, but never welcomed there.
I'd be happy to see anything else there.

  • Thanks for the heads up, Kevin. I never even noticed the sign changed back to Xippo until you posted (I live across the street from the bar). They 'appear' to have closed up shop for the past year with the exception of the occasional paint and wine party. It's been blessedly quiet ever since and it's been a joy. I hope this isn't a sign that their loud, obnoxious Eurotrash dance parties will resume and once again destroy our neighborhood's peace and quiet.

I received a notice today from my mail carrier that due to a new policy our mailbox must be moved to the ground level? I'm wondering if anyone else received this. The notice seems fishy seeins as I don't see some mass exodus of folks moving their mailboxes off their houses. My gut is that she doesn't like our dog barking at her when she comes up the stairs. Now before everyone gets on that, the dog is enclosed in the house and has NO way of getting out, she's just barking in the window which is closed when we're away. The claim of "multiple stairs" is insane, since we have a 10 stair staricase like every other single family home in the neighboorhood. Any idea what to do about this or debunk this "policy?" I attached a photo of the notice.

  • Our mailcarrier informed us verbally that we needed to move our mailbox from the top of the stairs to the gate. I have yet to do it. She continues to just leave our mail stuffed in the gate and everytime we see her she tells us the same thing that we need to move the mailbox because she is not supposed to go up steps

  • I checked with a friend whose mother works for the USPS. She said it's just what the carriers do when they're lazy. It's not a real ordinance, especially since every single family home in the neighborhood has stairs. We've been getting our mail fine and looks like the carrier who placed the letter is gone now. Thanks everyone!

Was I the only one?

Somehow I missed the signs for the Ecuador Parade's parking ban yesterday and got towed.

5 years in the area and this was the first time getting towed. Not a great way to start a Sunday. Waiting in line at the tow lot (700 N. Sacramento), paying a $175 tow fee and $60 ticket, and being treated like I was a criminal was like being on "Parking Wars", only not funny.

I was all about parades and street festivals, but to have my personal space violated by the city, fined, and forced to jump through hoops to get my personal property back was a huge turn off.

Why couldn't the parade floats get prepared in the Horner Park parking lot? Why does our Alderman OK these festivals that cause 15+ block parking bans without any consideration for the actual neighbors that live there and are home on a Sunday?

Yeah there were five 8x11" signs spread over a entire city block and I missed them. So I am the one to blame, but I seriously question why I choose to deal with this stuff when I could move west. Between the street cleaning, tree trimming, road repaving, festivals, parades, construction if you do not have a garage you are going to eventually get fined.

  • Irving Bark Fined and ticketed to death

Yeah the alderman usually dedicates a tweet to such large parking bans but this time it got buried in the newsletter.

    Just bad luck for us...

  • I feel like the important news tends to be buried in the ward newsletter (or what I want to read about is buried under a headline I don't think to read)

Chicago Market will differ from traditional grocery stores in three important ways: the focus on local foods, a commitment to transparency and education, and the democratic community which is the foundation of our mission and vision. We will educate our community about food sources and production, and will provide information about nutrition and the social, economic and political characteristics of food.

Ownership is a unique way to gain control over your grocery experience. Owners have a voice in store leadership and operation, receive special discounts and promotions, and receive annual patronage refunds. Ownership, however, is also a way in which you positively impact your community: owners give back to local farmers, give back to members of your community, and give back to our environment. And the first 1,000 Owners will have a strong voice in where the co-op is located.

We would like to thank the Chicago community for your ongoing support in our #1000in100 campaign to recruit 1,000 Owners in 100 days. Become a Founding Owner today at www.chicagomarket.coop/join.
