"Neighbor" in Distress

Guy rang our bell around 10 pm, introduced himself as our neighbor, and launched into a story, which boiled down to the fact that he couldn't get into his apartment on Oakley just north of Irving Park. Asked if there was a Home Depot nearby - then asked for a ride (didn't get one). Then asked for a ladder (didn't have one). Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but...

Asked if there was a Home Depot nearby - then asked for a ride (didn't get one). Then asked for a ladder (didn't have one). Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but didn't know their houses). Then, finally, asked for cab fare (also denied).

I guess there's a chance this guy was on the up-and-up and having a really bad night, but this rings all kinds of warning bells for me. Anyone else encounter him?

So, the Home Depot/ locked out neighbor guy was just at my door. Has anyone experienced any trouble/ burglary afterward?

Rang the bell twice and jiggled my doorhandle. I waited a minute before answering so he was on his way down my steps when I opened the door. Same shpeel. Locked out, do i know if a Home depot or locksmith is in the area. I was a bit standoff-ish, so he couldn't get away from me quickly enough and didn't ask for any $$. Same description, white, about 6' tall, maybe 50 years old. Wearing black leather jacket.

Had the police drive by after the incident just because it felt like things would have gone differently if my wife answered the door.

I'm in Lakeview at Melrose/Racine, so he appears to be straying from North Center. Would love to hear about any further incidents.

Not *quite* related, but the "Lambs' Farm" scammer(s) are out again collecting "donations" (in connection with Tribune "subscriptions").

Peoples Gas Signage Added After Cars Parked

At 9:30 am, I witnessed People Gas add signs to the trees in front of our business showing no parking from today (12/17) beginning at 7 am until 4 pm and ending on 12/31. Thanks for the notice, but the cars that have been parked there already better not get tickets since they just put the signs up and the cars were there earlier. I don't know the owners of these cars or I would give them a heads up. Just not right.

  • This has happened half a dozen times on our block, as cute old houses get torn down and McMansions replace them. Oftentimes, as the reader above says, they never even show, and when this happens, residents park there anyway, with no repercussions.

  • A to Z Auto Service, Inc. Male & Female Co-Owners of Auto Repair Shop

Just in case and to support anyone towed/ticketed, I also notified Ald. Pawar's office yesterday at the same time I posted on here. Signs still up this morning but no sign of anyone....

Accident at Irving and Bell?

NPR reported this morning an accident involving a pedestrian at Irving Park and Bell. Does anyone know anything?

  • I heard the same thing; they said car vs pedestrian. I was driving north on Western at the time. As I crossed Irving, there was no sign of emergency vehicle activity on Irving, so it must have been on Bell. There are a number of elementary schools over there and often parents and kids walking at that time of day. Hope everyone is ok.

  • I live right there. I get so annoyed at how fast some people turning off Irving drive down Bell. There are a lot of pedestrians on this block, including young kids. I hope everyone is OK.

  • CJL ...

Really bad at dropoff and pickup with the non-walking St Bens' parents. Notwithstanding that it's mostly "their" kids walking there.

Landscape architect / designer

Although we haven't yet hit Christmas, i'm starting to do some research for a landscape designer to so we can start work on redoing our yard at the first sign of spring. While I've done some research online, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations of companies you've used int he past? We don't plan on doing anything over the top, but want to make the front of our city home look great, and likely replace the side half lot (~12 ft wide) that runs the full length of our home. Oh, and keeping the price reasonable would help too:) Any suggestions?

Subway on Lincoln, Damen, Irving Park CLOSED

I was driving by the Subway on North Lincoln today and noticed all the windows covered in paper and a "No Trespassing" sign on the door. Does anyone know if this is a remodel or if they are permanently closed or moving? The exterior building signage is still in place, but otherwise it is looking deserted.

  • The owner died, young guy not sure how. There was an eviction notice on the door.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

Oh no! That was a good subway since I could walk there from work

  • RT Here

Hopefully another crappy franchise doesn't open there.......

Missing a cat?

Hi neighbors,
Was on my porch on Addison near Wolcott and a gray cat walked out from my backyard. He/she has two white back paws. It didn't have a collar (do cats wear collars?)
Anyway, it's around now (4:55 pm) if someone is looking for their pet. Write back and I'll be happy to go back out to try to find him/her.
Thanks.

Gang banger-north center-Larchmont

Gang banger guy -baggy pants hanging off and a black hoodie and he lives on the block of Larchmont! Lots of activity in the alley behind Larchmont extremely suspicious

  • I am not being any harder on Josh than anyone else here has been on me for commenting. I am not invested in that neighborhood and am certain you can all figure it out.

  • Teamharman Back from the sunny south

You might be talking about little Jimmy. He's a remnant from the old guard in the neighborhood. He used to run around with a guy named Mike and cause general mischief. Oh, and sell dope. This guy isn't your run of the mill pot dealer guy. He sells coke and the like. He used to come into TL and Foleys trying to peddle his wares. When you see him call the cops. They know exactly who he is and what he's up to.

Girl Scout cookies?

Curious, but are there any spots in the North Center area where somebody might find Girl Scout cookies? One of my managers and I are both craving them... Thanks!

  • I just posted about advice about how to help my 6 years old daughter to sell a few boxes of cookies. She is a daisy for the first time this year.
We would love to come and take your orders and then deliver them to you.
She cant stop talking about the cookies that she needs to sell and I dont know how to help her with that :)

    Happy Holiday season eveyone

saralorin - I read somewhere that Girl Scouts are setting up their own webpages this year. Also, take her door-to-door in your neighborhood; be sure to have her practice her sales pitch a few times before you go.

A Great Plumber

I highly recommend Noel Heneghan 773-297-9153. He is a very good plumber. He's trustworthy, thorough, easy-to-work with, responsive--he always either answers my call or calls back quickly and always comes to do the work quickly. His fees are very reasonable. He's the father of five, so he understands the importance of getting the plumbing back to work quickly.

  • I heartily second this endorsement. We've had Noel do a lot of work for us and he's everything that Eileen has described. Great, honest, hard working guy.

  • Betsy Neighbor

We have also had Noel do some work for us and it is so nice to know a professional, honest and affordable plumber who will show up and get the work done! Great guy!

  • Cyn Chi since 1991, East Humboldt since 2010

I found Noel lacking, he totally misdiagnosed the problem and charged a LOT.
