Garden Help

Senior with bad knees looking for regular garden maintenance. St. Ben's area. Visit my lovely garden every two weeks or so and help me keep it in top shape. My lovely perennial garden was replanted in 2014. Let's hope it's less attractive to rabbits in 2015.

Snowbirds?

Yikes, this is the first time I've seen so MANY large flocks of migrating ducks/geese (?) overhead in such a short time. In the past few days, I've seen (and heard - they're loud enough to be heard inside, at which point I run outside to take a look) multiple flocks of what look like up to fifty/sixty or more birds flying in perfect formations...and headed south. Anybody else enjoying the show? Any birders out there know if this concentrated...

In the past, I've seen flocks migrating, but never so many in such a short time, directly over this area (St. Ben's). I guess it's not just OHare that's changing their flight plans.

Thanks for the info, Mike, Rinda, and Travis. I did head over to the Chicago Tonight website to watch the video. I had wondered if the weather patterns that brought us an early taste of winter had something to do with the migration, and sure enough - the same strong wind patterns that brought the arctic cold down apparently pushed the birds a bit to the east of their normal migratory path. Not so sure about the early cold, but I'm happy to have seen the cranes! Living in the heart of the city tends to make us lose track of the massive patterns and rhythms of life across the planet.

  • A friend of mine saw a flock of sand hill cranes flying overhead!

RCN outage?

I've been having to tether my phone to use internet since last night. RCN sent cable guy out but he said it is an issue with RCN signal and he can't fix it and that others may be having issues as well. Anyone else having this issue??

  • My RCN internet seems a little balky, but it's still up.

  • My internet has seemed slow as well. Some pages have taken a long time (a minute or so) to load. Thought it was the website which is known for it's issues but sounds like it's RCN.

Looking for a worthy cause to donate childrens toys/home stuff to...

We like to rotate out our still-newish toys and home stuff. Rather than send to Salvation Army for resale, we were hoping to donate to a cause here in Northcenter. Maybe a shelter or support center for single moms/dads, etc.

Ideas? Recommendations?

  • Courtenay school! They do a "holiday market" for parents who can not afford presents. They get to "shop" so they can have something for their kids on Christmas. Please send attention to Naomi who puts it all together beautifully!

  • Ravenswood Community Child Care Center (RC4) provides very affordable child care to teenage parents (in addition to full-paying parents from the community), so long as those teens are pursuing their high school diploma or college degree. To donate toys to these kids, you can contact the daycare directly (www.rc4cares.com) or contact Parenting PROgress (http://ravenscov.org/mission-outreach/parenting-progress/), a program that provides support for these parents and their children.

Spotted in North Center: Black Lab/Lab Mix with Tags

Just spotted a black lab/lab mix who was clearly lost on Berenice & Damen. My husband tried to follow him/her, but she was scared and ran west on Grace. There are two people who also saw her and nearly ran her over. They drove on to look for her to see if they could find her.

Street Markings

While driving around the last few days in areas where I am unfamiliar, I noticed that the lane markings are barely visible in many places. While common sense can overcome the lack of direction, it is still probably best to have those guidelines visible. Now that we are entering winter when there is more night driving and markings are less visible due to snow and salt, it might be good to repaint them. Could it be possible that the marking maintenance budget was cut back due to the increased pothole expenses this year?

Unfortunately this is the city of Chicago... While they have been resurfacing way more streets than usual, and applying fresh thermo-striping (more durable than just paint, although not invincible, especially to snowplows), I have a sneaking suspicion that it's just because Rahm is trying to get re-elected.

Unfortunately this is the city of Chicago... While they have been resurfacing way more streets than usual, and applying fresh thermo-striping (more durable than just paint, although not invincible, especially to snowplows), I have a sneaking suspicion that it's just because Rahm is trying to get re-elected.

Either way, unless the road has been repaved recently, they probably aren't going to re-stripe the road. See Fullerton Ave. between Ashland and the highway. That road had been in dire need of repair for a couple of years with most of the stripes worn off. Now it's been repaved with fresh stripes....

I agree it is very annoying and makes the over-cautious drivers on the road more jumpy, ironically making it more dangerous. For example when crossing the river on Diversey, there are two lanes, and because it's not clearly marked, occasionally when cruising up the right lane, you'll have somebody lean over to take both lanes, where if there were stripes, they should know better than that. Just my two cents.

Western Avenue Construction

Signs say construction begins 11/10/14 on Western Avenue. I see work horses with Road Closed signs on the side of the road. Is this the start of the project that will tear down the overpass? What sections of Western are going to be closed?

  • Coonley Elementary School reviewed by a parent

I am very happy with this school and the community. The only downside is class size, but that is a CPS issue. Parents are very involved in working with the principals and administration in making curriculum suggestions. It is true that Coonley is a fundraising machine, which makes it a little unfair for those who cannot afford to live in the neighborhood. But really Coonley is a model that could be used throughout the city if CPS as a whole could ever get its act together and not so poorly manage its resources. But I am getting off on a tangent . . . Both my kids are in the neighborhood program and I feel great about the education they are getting and the supportive emotional environment. Friendly and involved parents in both classes. Great gen ed teachers too. My older son is special needs and he loves it and knows everyone in the school. The IEP team and his special ed resource teacher have gone through leaps and bounds, long hours, and lots of meetings, to make his experience there a good one. My special needs son was previously at another CPS school for pre-k and environment and leadership make all the difference! I am so happy we are where we are now.

Parking spot for 12 foot Camper needed for 1 - 2 weeks

Anyone know of a place I can park a small 12 foot lenght camper for 1 - 2 weeks? It should fit in a normal parking space, but it's about 7ft tall so it doesn't fit in my garage. It would fit in an outside spot or in a tall garage. I run the Christmas Tree lot at Big Star in Bucktown & my parents are bringing the camper from a few hours away this week. I can't move it to Big Star till next weekend or the weekend after.

They have daily rates as well, you may want to call or visit to find out which makes better sense for you. It may be a problem of noise or otherwise if you plan to live in the camper by an L station, but at lease you should not get a ticket or towed, if you pay the bill. If you are a local resident and do not have a car that already has a local residential parking permit, then go get one from you local alderman.
