History of this old Gas Station?

I was having a debate with some friends over what this building at the corner of California and Altgeld once was.

I'd bet dollars to donuts it was a gas station, but is there anyone who's been in the neighborhood awhile who could add any further details?

Thanks so much.

P.S. I heard they were going to put a Trader Joe's in that building, but then the local slumlord jacked up the rent because someone stapled a flyer to a tree trying to give away a dog that they CLEARLY DON'T DESERVE TO OWN, because the dog was scared by a loud noise last night--was that gunshots or fireworks?

At least that's what I heard.

Thanks!

Tony's Spoiled Chicken

Spoiled chicken again from Tony's on Armitage. I know it can happen anywhere, but it has only ever happened to me at Tony's. So, you know, statistics. Grrrrr, poo. That's as dramatic as my rage gets about this kind of stuff. I do want to put some gentle pressure on them to step up their game.

This is the face of a dog who won't get her chicken and rice. ;)

  • If you are interested in an alternative that's local, I've generally found Sunrise on Milwaukee to have good quality meat.

  • I went there for about 2 years then I tried out the Mariano's on Chicago & Damen. Night and day difference of everything; parking, employees, cleanliness, fresh produce, meat selection etc.

Increased loitering at Armitage/California

Does anyone know the story behind the group that's been hanging out with increasing frequency at California and Armitage? In front of the bank, and sometimes behind it. Young adults. They're not waiting for the bus...and have been hanging out a lot more often.

  • Never hurts to make a call.

I live right near the LS Blue Line stop and there have been a few hangers around the station recently. One mixed race couple with a dog (don't look like the gutter punks, however) has been outside the station almost every night this week....

I live right near the LS Blue Line stop and there have been a few hangers around the station recently. One mixed race couple with a dog (don't look like the gutter punks, however) has been outside the station almost every night this week. But they don't bother anyone and just sit there quietly with a signage asking for change (or cash, haven't stopped long enough to read it).

This morning there was another couple on Kedzie in front of the comic book state that was definitely more gutter punk looking. Both white kids, very dirty, dreads, and a dog of course. I should have called this in since it was obviously loitering.

  • Spoke with the police tonight. They said unless I witness them committing a crime, they are welcome to stake out the corner as their own. They said the bank is not identified as a no-loitering area. There are seven of them out there now...they just got off the California bus to hang on the corner and behind the bank.

Found dog named "Jackie" in alley behind Tony's (Fullerton/Central Park)

Hello Everyblock! My husband and I found a very sweet dog tonight named Jackie in the alley, tied to a fence post, behind Tony's. A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody...

A neighborhood kid said they'd seen her there since about 1 pm, and we found her around 8:30 pm. She has up to date rabies tags and a Home Again tag. She is well-fed, has healthy teeth, skin, and fur, and is clearly somebody's pet. She's strong though and we figure she may have bolted, somebody caught her and tied her up hoping her owners would find her? We aren't sure.

She is probably about 30 lbs, very strong but sweet. She responds to her name, and knows commands like sit and stay. She loves chicken, but what dog doesn't.

If anyone knows Jackie's owners, please respond! We have called Home Again and they have called her owners, but they did not pick up so we're not sure what's going to happen tonight. We're letting her stay with us overnight but if you know where Jackie lives we would love nothing more than to reunite her with her owners.

  • LDL

Thank you so much for doing all of this. If my dog had gotten lost, I would be so lucky to have someone like you be the one to find her and care for her in the interim. So wonderful and heartwarming to know there are people like you out there who are willing to help.

  • So cool! And thanks for the update. I was wondering, how long was Jackie gone?

St. Sylvester's Preschool

My daughter will be starting pre-k/preschool at St. Sylvester's next month. She's an early September birthday, so we expect she'll be in the youngest classroom (they divide by age as I understand it). I'm wondering if there are any other parents of new students at St. Sylvester's here who might like to meet up at Palmer Square for a play date one weekend before the start of the school year.
I'm also interested in hearing about experiences with the school that others would like to share. Thank you!

  • Hilarie Marie, My son is starting PRE-3 this fall also. he turned three in the middle of June.
I would love to meet up in Palmer and get our two together..... He is so excited about going to school but i know it will be different on the 25th of Aug. I would love him to have someone he know there....

We just saw a white with tan spots female chihuahua running loose around Central Park and Schubert. Wearing no collar or tags. She was timid but friendly and wouldn't let us get close enough to pick her up.
Just a heads up, hopefully she wasn't too far from home! :(

Gunshots this morning (Spaulding/Dickens area)?

Was wondering if anyone else heard gunshots early this morning? My husband and I were woken up this morning by them and could hear them from our alley for over the course of at least 15 minutes. I was so half asleep that I don't know what time it was, I just know that shortly after, the sun began to rise. Also, I know it's been mentioned many times on here, but what is the proper number to call to report something like this. Is it 911? Thanks!

  • Jon San Logan Square/Avondale warrior.

I've read that it's the 911 operator's discretion whether to dispatch the call or not.

  • meanboss I own a circus.

Well, at the CAPS meeting the lecture us to call 911 and then don't bother to send anyone when we do. It's a little frustrating, especially after watching someone hit my car and drive away.

I started to wonder if there were any possibility that the to-be-rehabbed Cozy Corner would offer a coffee window. While I initially doubted it would make much sense on the alley side of the business, next to the NB exit - that alley can get pretty ripe - I knew I'd go if they offered it. And then today, I saw new windows on the alley side, and some sort of indented part of the outer wall. DARE I DRREAM, NEIGHBORS? Anybody know anybody who may know if that's even a possibility?

The times I've been to Cozy Corner in the past, people are always coming in for a to-go cup of coffee. The layout was pretty tight in there, though, so I could see some people not wanting to hassle with it. Perhaps with the expanded space and new layout there will be ample opportunity to stop in for coffee, even if it's not an outside window. The new openings installed on the alley side of the addition are definitely only for natural light/trash exit unfortunately.

  • El Jefe Logan Square Resident

I believe Cozy Corner has always offered coffee service @ the counter for to-go cups. Can anyone confirm this? No need for a window if they keep this up after reopening.

  • I live right near there, too, and have been watching this building transform over the last several months. It's looking great. Can't say I'm big on the idea of increasing housing density there, but it doesn't look like the building could house a huge number of units, and it will be great to have some new business activity on that stretch. "A restaurant, a furniture store, a brewery, an antique store" sounds like a pretty decent start!

As a side note, I went to take a look at the LS one last weekend; there was someone else there hauling away a huge stack of at least 8 books. The only stuff left was garbage. It's just an open box, so I realize there aren't any rules. I wasn't going to hassle the guy or make assumptions about his needs. But please be courteous, leave some for your neighbors, and contribute to the box if you can.

Funston Elementary

I just found out my child will be attending Funston Elementary this year. Does anyone know about this school or have an opinion good or bad? It is not anywhere near our home so we are debating whether or not to call CPS about this?

  • Is this for K? According to CPS, there are still spots available at a few elementary schools: http://cpsoae.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=173111&type=d

On that list, I'd investigate McPherson.

The teachers are warm, caring and smart; the school is orderly; and the principal is great. We're excited to have this great neighborhood school in our hood.

Nanny Share/Child Care Provider

I am seeking in home child care for my 10 month old niece. Our needs are 30ish hours per week with a budget of $200/week. Anyone have a nanny share opening or any thoughts? I know it's a tall order.

  • Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Even with a nanny share, this is pretty poor income. You can find nannies that cheap, but you're going to get what you pay for. Also, Joannainuptown - that's the going rate for a decently experienced nanny of one child, not two or more.

Many parents don't understand that a nanny is not a "full time babysitter" - a nanny (that you're not paying 7 dollars an hour) is going to be someone who assists you in raising your family and keeping your house in order whether it's helping clean the house or run the occasional errand, etc.

The fact that some people are willing to entrust the upbringing of their children to the lowest bidder is mind boggling to me.

$200/week is a rather low budget even for someone willing to do a nanny share. If the currently-paying family is even allowing / comfortable with their nanny entering a share, they may well want some sort of a discount or even a matched rate - dropping this poor nanny to something like ~13/hr for watching two kids (this is well below the going rate for anyone with experience).

Then of course there is the term "30ish", but on a fixed budget. This is a red flag for any prospective nanny. When it's 38 hours, does the family still only have $200 to spend? This may not be OP - but many parents who sound like OP can't / won't / don't pay more...

I don't mean to disparage OP - her available budget is what it is and that can't be helped - it's hard getting by especially in this city. I just think this is a taller order than most people realize.

Coach house is legal?

Is it legal to build a coach house on top of your garage, and use it for rental income? Do you know where to find the City of Chicago laws pertaining to this type of structure? We see several of them in the neighborhood, but were not sure about attempting this ourseleves. We can definitely use the extra income!!

  • New ones were banned in 1957, the ones you still see are grandfathered in. It's too bad, coach houses are much more appealing than basement apartments.

  • AnnaWilson Anna

Yeah, I went through the hassle of talking to several contractors and went to the building permit office and was told NOPE! If a coach house exists then it's OK but we're not allowed to build a new one, even if you knock down your detached garage and replace it with a coach house. Lame.

  • Even if new coach houses weren't explicitly banned, you probably would not be able to due to zoning restriction regarding number of units on the lot and total finished sq footage.

Likely drug deal @ Spaulding stop today

I know someone who witnessed what they think was a drug deal going down today b/t 4:15-4:30 at the spaulding exit at the logan square stop. They didn't report it because "it was over already". They saw a dark-haired, latino-looking guy, think about 5'10", receive cash from a white guy, also thin and about 5'10" at the stop, and the dark-haired guy handed him very small baggies of something the would-be witness said they didn't think was weed. Large male Airedale terrier mix looking for a loving forever home.

I've been volunteering at an animal shelter nearby and fell in love with a dog but I'm not able to give him a home because of my crazy schedule and living situation.

He is 7 and really sweet natured, though probably best without other pets in the house, since he's always been the only pet. He is great with people and would make a great companion dog. He has some minor medical needs but nothing too difficult to maintain.

The only thing is that he is about 80+ lbs and probably needs an owner who can handle such a large dog. Other than that this gentle giant would make a wonderful, quiet and loyal companion.

  • What shelter is he in? Often times shelters work with certain rescues they have relationships with. You could also try reaching out to One Tail At A Time in the city- they are a great organization and will provide all supplies to anyone that can foster him!

  • He is at PAWS. Thanks for spreading the word!

Morning, noon and night this dog barks and I think its been going on for over a year now. Honestly don't think or cant even fathom that I am the only one tired of this.

I have been doing research online and I thought there was a Barking Dog Noise Ordinance, or some sort of Dog Barking nuisance law for Cook County/Chicago but I can not locate it?
I don't want to call animal control, but fear that Its my only option - plus after my research, is recommended.
Calling 311 or 911 isn't going to solve the problem. Asking the owner nicely to control the dogs barking will be taken care of first, I just want to make sure if things keep going south, I have the correct recourse.

There may be an underlying behavior or health issue here. Dogs with separation anxiety will bark constantly when left alone. Sometimes the owner's are not even aware of this issue until told by a neighbor.

Another issue is senior dogs with dementia type issues can bark far too often. I have a 16 year old dog and in the last six months or so she has really increased her barking. She's having some doggie dementia type issues.

Cheap small-batch ice cream!

Hi, I'm Ben. For the last year I've been running a recipe development project. I make ice cream and my list of taste testers buy it at cost and give me their feedback.

I've refined some pretty delicious flavors, like buttercream with oatmeal raisin cookie chunks, pistachio orange ricotta with chocolate covered cannoli shell pieces, and my current flavor, horchata with caramel ribbons.

Every once in a while, I have to fill empty spots on my list, and Everyblock is a great community. There aren't many spots, so if you're interested, read more information below and sign up right away!

Sunday NYT in Logan?

Anyone know where to pick up New York Times, on Saturday evening or Sunday morning, in Logan?

  • You can get it at the Starbucks at the corner of California and Logan.

  • J.J. Peppers also carries it or at least they use to.

Abandoned home full of dogs?

I was walking my dogs on a new route this past Saturday morning and passed by a deserted-looking house that seemingly contained a pack of barking dogs. I know what two or three dogs sound like; this was way more than that, and it was particularly strange emanating from such a dilapidated home.

I could be mistaken; just wanted to see if anyone else had a similar experience on Sawyer, between McLean & Palmer.

  • I think it is or another one is 2116N. Sawyer. A friend reported 2116 to ACC and not sure if anything happened. Upped it to PETA-political comments unwelcome-they actually show up and mediate or offer to take dogs. The garage has an orange unsafe sticker.

  • Ha! 2053 N Sawyer is not under renovation, the owner just slaps on new siding & what-not to hide the holes in the building. It's very dilapidated & infested with rats. One almost ran over my foot a bit ago when I was walking by. There are dogs that live on the first floor, their owner is fantastic & they're taken care of but I do worry about everyone that lives in the place, it looks like it's about to fall apart with a good wind.

Obscure No Parking signs going up on Wrightwood

Seeing someone put up "No Parking" signs on Wrightwood for this weekend (starting today) around Avers, Hamlin. One of them stapled to a flat tree stump - pedestrians can see, but not cars. Pretty dumb considering there's a tree right next to the stump prime for posting.

  • The temporary no-parking signs around here are consistently sparse/non-existent this round was particularly bad though. Called 311, not sure who exactly to get a hold of though.

LS Babysitter Recommendations?

It's about time we ventured out for a date night and let a babysitter take care of our 1+ year-old. I'm looking for recommendations on for baby sitter. Does anyone have a sitter that they like? We're hoping to limit ourselves to no more than $12 or $13 / hour, and we're in the Fullerton / Kedzie area.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Thanks all. I've received a ton of great replies. Please do not be upset if I don't respond to every message I've received, as we only need one sitter for now. :-)

Hi, I've been a nanny for years and babysit often on weekends. Parents tell me all the time how important it is to have a list of back-up babysitters. I'm on a list for many families and while I don't see them all regularly, I surely have gotten last second panic calls to see if I'm available that afternoon/night after another sitter got sick or had to cancel. My advice, meet with as many people as you can and find several you trust to care for your child. You never know when you'll need a back-up sitter!

Spray painted sidewalks?

Anyone know what "improvements" are planned for the north side of Wrightwood? Sidewalks and street marked up with spray paint from Avers to at least Kimball.

  • They are installing 4,209 feet of 8" watermain. The old pipe dates back to 1896. All questions and comments should be directed to Tom LaPorte at 312-742-1029.
