Public Trash Cans

Hi. Does anyone know how we can get some trash cans placed around EGP and North Lawndale, or any West Side neighborhoods really? Other neighborhoods have trash cans on the corners of busy intersections. Some are nice and neighborhood centric some are just the plain old can. Those are perfectly serviceable. The amount of trash that just gets thrown around is truly disgusting. It is too much for the few folks that care to go around cleaning everyone else's messes,...

Other neighborhoods have trash cans on the corners of busy intersections. Some are nice and neighborhood centric some are just the plain old can. Those are perfectly serviceable. The amount of trash that just gets thrown around is truly disgusting. It is too much for the few folks that care to go around cleaning everyone else's messes, not that we don't try. I don't understand the mentality of people that litter. Are they not disgusted by how trashy the neighborhood looks? I figure at least if there are places to put trash then something might start to change.

So I'm going to put in a request with my alderman this week, but that's not always the best solution. Does anyone know of any other ways to reach out, and make this happen?

Also, don't turn this thread into a whine fest about the alderman, government, lazy neighbors, etc. Problems and hurdles can be overcome.

Right to thrive zone!! Great Idea

Emanuel,is touting a right to thrive zone. He intends to develop the underserved neighborhoods in Chicago and bring back jobs. It will help businesses return to these blighted areas by giving special tax breaks or credits. It's' about time the Democrats make some serious efforts to save Chicago neighborhood that are wastelands.

There have been lots of promises in the past. Let's hope this is the real deal.

If your alley is a mess, send kyle.smith@cityofchicago.org an email and ask that the regular garbage guys rake the entire alley. Ask that the regular crew lift the lids of blue carts and empty them if they have regular garbage in them,
instead of waiting for the blue crews to tag with a yellow sticker...and wair for the next wk (or) never pick up of the blue cart full of regular garbage.

A reminder email early the day of garbage pickup or the day before will let him know the job is not complete.

He can get your alley cleaner...so you don't do the job for the guy who is paid to do.the job. U can plant some stuff, have a bbq w/ neighbors...and enjoy your block.

The Thanks to neighbors is a nice jesture. Sounds like things have improved on your block Seth. You are a good leader/catalist for positive channge.

Keep holding city workers accountable here until they do as good a job as Depaul and Lincoln Park get!

  • Barney Seth Barnhart Thirteen year Garfield Park resident

This has nothing to do with an alley. Or, getting city services. It is about my block and my appreciation for neighbors cleaning up.

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

Brother Barney, this is about an alley (all alleys) and city services, as it relates to the way your block looking. I speaks to the truth that some people really care about their environment and the quality of life they enjoy.
Your block is the example that my mission and purpose of cleaning up represents. Thanks for sharing your picture and any other photos that you are comfortable sending.

Rahm being bankrolled by Republican millionaires

Conservative Republican Ken Griffin donated $1 million to Rahm Emmanuel's campaign. This is who he is beholden too, not the residents of East Garfield Park, unless you donated the same amount.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD1nPrLAy9k

  • Bger East Village neighbor

He also gets donations from Democrats. There are Republicans in this city and they know the Democrats always win. Who the heck are they going to support? They'll choose the one they think best represents their views. Republicans are generally--with the exception of George Bush ;-) -- fiscal conservatives. Between Garcia and Emanuel the choice for a fiscal conservative is obvious. I'm sure Republicans gave to the Daley's and Jane Byrne and on and on.

As I drove pass to my surprise I found out it's another fast food joint possibly a (Maxwell) stand. Boy, she was not happy about that! She stated that no in the community was inform of the new business surfacing in their back yard. She stated that no one wants to smell onions ALL day and EVERY day.
She's applaud and discussed at her re-elected alderman Ervin.
This area is filled with senior citizen who are afraid to come and now you give the corner boys a new place to hang out and have random shoot outs.

We have voters on the WestSide!

I'm watching the news and I'm noticing that the mayor candidates are campaigning in the Downtown and Southside area.
Do the votes in EPG (Westside) not matter?
I would love to see both Chuy/Rahm walk thur the entire 28th ward. Hell I would love to see ervin as well.

  • It's pretty obvious that Rahm doesn't care about the West side, just look around, proof is in the pudding

  • Ben Roc area 4 headquarters

Willie Should link up with Chuy and treat Rahm

Median One-Bedroom Rents in Chicago per DNAChicago:

Here's an interesting article that shows median one bedroom rents for Chicago neighborhoods. Comparing the West side to other neighborhoods, it makes sense why people are now venturing into some of the less trendy areas of the city. There's a significant difference in price from say the Near West Side to East & West Garfield Park, Humboldt Park or Lawndale. Do these prices look "about" right in your neighborhood?

  • Gloria B South Austin

I'm in South Austin and the 1 bedroom apts. to the east of me rent for just $700 per month. They're very nice!

Any new Businesses in East & West Garfield Park?

I always heard that the West side was the red-headed step-child of black Chicago. Always ignored and last to get city services. After living hear for a few years, I realize this is definitely the case. Our Rotten Mayor Rahm Emanuel has completely ignored the West side, EVEN during his re-election bid. He doesn't even care to get our votes.

The West side is completely stagnant. I've been following many of the events, upgrades and investments happening throughout the entire South side from Pullman, Roseland, Washington Park, Bronzeville & especially Englewood. Englewood is getting a Whole Foods Market, has several new technology incubators, food labs, King-Kennedy College, several new coffee shops, independently owned cafes/restaurants and more. Englewood is actually on the come-up and the ball is rolling! I LOVE IT! Englewood is grass-rooting itself out the hole! I'm extremely happy for them because I love a "comeback against all odds" story,

Why are East Garfield Park & West Garfield Park still ignored? I think I have to look in the mirror on this one. We allow an Alderman to continue getting into office without holding him accountable for doing absolutely nothing. I also don't think people on the West side have the innovation or community pride to make such changes in our community. I see no visual signs of cultural pride such as tech incubators, coffee shops, independently owned boutiques, art galleries, musical events, playhouses etc. happening on the West side. Alderman Ervin would rather host a Superbowl Party with strippers for West side gangsters. I'm beginning to believe what everyone told me about Garfield Park before moving here. The West side is just different (and not in a good way).

  • Project North Lawndale Why are the W.Side Alderman Paid for NOTHING?

Do you plan on having a meeting so that everyone can help? If so let us know. There are a cpl of EB who are in finance, maybe they have more advice

  • we need change CLEAN-UP THE CORNERS

    D. Tate,

Not sure what you're thinking of doing however, if it's something the community will be a part of, perhaps you might consider forming some sort of co-op? I would definitely pay for something that helps build the community and that we can benefit from.
