Need a water meter installed, referrals please! West town

I am having the hardest time finding a plumber to install a water meter at my 3 flat. We had a plumber lined up and then he backed out because he didn't want to go get the license and meter from the city. Lots of plumbers have said they don't do it. The city is requiring that we install one or face fines.

Anyone have a reasonably priced suggestion? We had one several thousand dollar estimate (over the phone, without looking at the property) and I can't believe it would cost that much to install so would like to get several more estimates before committing.

Thank you!

  • Not sure if they do this, but the plumbing company I use is Diversey Plumbing. Family owned - I've had a great experience with them.

What is the city planning on doing with the closed school on Oakley and Lake St?

Does anyone have any idea what the city is planning to do with that land or building? Right now and in the summer it is not much of a park and seems to be only utilized by homeless people who wait for services from St. Malachy's across the street. It would make a great space for a dog park.

Amber Building/Viva Plaza

Just saw that the first floor doesn't have Lyft training anymore. It now says "ANNEX" and "never sleeps", anyone know what's happening? I have been excited to see the restoration and investment in the neighborhood.

  • Still waiting on anything official, but the rumor is that it's going to be co-working space, even on the ground floor. Doesn't make much sense to me (and I was hoping for a restaurant) but that's what's out there right now. BTW, if you live in the area, join the UK Village Community page on Facebook -- it's being discussed there.

Ash tree removal due to Emerald Ash Borer

Hey neighbors, I have very sad news to share.

Chicago has been devastated by the EAB, an invasive species that kills ash trees in as little as 2 years. They're the small, shiny, green bugs you have probably seen on the trees during the past two years. If you notice small "shoots" projecting from the base of trees, you can bet that's a tree that's been infected by EAB. Basically every tree in our neighborhood has been affected and will...

Basically every tree in our neighborhood has been affected and will probably be destroyed in the next year or two.

Ash trees are a staple of Chicago's neighborhoods. I live next to one of the tallest and most amazing trees in the neighborhood (on the 1200 block of W. Huron) and it's tagged for removal.

The tree has been noticeably suffering over the past year and I'm utterly distraught that it will be removed. Not only is it beautiful, it served to shade and protect the house and really beautified the block. It's going to be extremely bare without it. I've always joked with my wife that when that tree goes, we go too...I just was hoping it wouldn't be so soon.

I'm hoping the city has a more amicable solution than uprooting our century-old Ash trees, though the EAB is essentially a death sentence for our Ash trees. Will there be a replacement? Saplings? Anything? I called the Forestry department but got no significant answers.

i just wanted to share my lament. If you see the giant tree on Huron with the orange signs taped to it, take a moment to admire how strong and amazing of a tree it was - it will be gone by the end of the month.

  • For those of us who enjoy Skinner Park in the West Loop, we can say our fairwell to a number of those trees as well. Notably the trees that align the Loomis pedestrian path between Monroe & Adams. Sad, as those trees provided nice shade in the Summer, and were a beautiful part of these park.

  • I am happy to report the marked Ash trees on our block were pruned today and not cut down.

Need Help with Sewing Project

Hi - I have a sewing project that I am seeking help with.

The project involved making several hanging panels with pouches for a small specialty club. The hanging panels are sort of like the hanging shoe bags you see on the back of closet doors. We need some fairly heavy fabric to be used for the main backing and I have an example of an existing one to show anyone that may be interested in the project.

We need some fairly heavy fabric to be used for the main backing and I have an example of an existing one to show anyone that may be interested in the project.

The panels aren’t terribly complicated but obviously someone with some sewing or seamstress experience would be best suited to tackle this. We would purchase all material and pay for the panels to be created.

I gathered a list of sewing shops I found on-line and will probably email them but thought I would throw it out here to EveryBlock to see what some of my creative neighbors suggest!

Thank you for any suggestions.

  • Go to the Polish lady at F&G cleaners on Grand, east if Damen right next to Albany Steel. She sews. I take everything to her. She is wonderful!

  • Yes I agree, Christine at F & G is the best.

Hi, This message does only apply for people who live within the 26th Ward.

See posted photograph. The photograph was taken at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center at 2753 West Division Street. Roberto Maldonado is closely involved with the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and he is a strong promoter of the organizations cause, political agenda and working methods. The poster was not only used at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center but was displayed at many places throughout the 26th Ward. The poster was developed by Maldonado and a local group of influential politicians and business men closely associated with him. You can read about the group at: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/November-2014/Jose-Lopez-Humboldt-Park

The poster was developed as part of a campaign to create race hate and tension between the various ethnic groups in the 26th Ward. The goal was to stop non-Puerto Ricans to move into the 26th Ward and to intimidate "outside" entrepreneurs and visitors. Other posters in the campaign showed families and children with ethnically characteristic features together with the headline "NO SE VENDE" and "NOT FOR SALE".

Together with the 26th Ward's homicide statistics the posters were read as a real death threat for people who recently moved into the 26th Ward and for people who visited the area. Some residents in the 26th Ward still have bullet holes in their windows from the time of these posters. The campaign changed mid-through Maldonado's term and the same windows that previously showed the death-threat posters are now showing posters promoting the release of a convicted terrorist. You can, however, still buy t-shirts and buttons with "NOT FOR SALE" messages at some of Maldonado's associate's businesses close to his office on Division Street. There is also active websites dedicated to creating tension between Puerto Ricans and all others in the 26th Ward.

The average rent in Smith Park and the 26th Ward area between Western and Damen by the Ukrainian Village HHDC are several times higher which means that the profit margins are much higher for HHDC and Bickerdike. Therefore, Maldonado has strong interests in develop large high-density government subsidized housing in these areas.

It is possible to say that Roberto Maldonado's death-threat campaign has been successful as the unemployment in the 26th Ward is record high at 17% and many businesses have successfully been kept out of the Ward. He and his associates has succeeded to get large high-density government subsidized housing projects through despite solid resistance from home owners in the area. Maldonado and his associates can look forward to 99 years of large amount of money streaming in.

Please, do not vote for Roberto Maldonado.

The dog guy was probably trying to do the right thing, but he screwed up. Two other guys saw the opportunity to steal an empty van. The dog guy tried to stop them, so they showed him a gun. Dog guy figured he could make himself look more like a victim than a f'up, so he omitted some details in his story to the police. Security camera ratted him out. End of story. I'm sure the dog guy is in trouble enough already. There doesn't need to be a full-blown investigation. This is between him, the company owner, and the police.

I'm living between Chicago and Grand Avenue and I have had the perception that my Alderman probable is in Wicker Park - but - I am part of the 26th Ward which stretches from Damen to Kostner. See posted map. The yellow is the 26th Ward.

The population in the 26th Ward has changed the last few years which means that the people in the east part of the ward can influence who will be the next Alderman. This election is important for us because the present Alderman, Roberto Maldonado, wants to take away police men from us and he wants to build low income housing within our neighborhood. So, please, vote.

After weeks of research, here are my conclusions of the three candidates:

Adam Corona
Corona is the only independent contender for alderman in the 26th Ward. He has no special interest group contributions to his Alderman campaign. Corona's independence is important because with him we will be able to affect low income housing developments in our neighborhood.

An alderman is in charge of a variety of different city services in his Ward. Corona has crucial Chicago city management experience which is important for getting things done as an alderman. Since 2011 he has held the position as Streets and Sanitation Superintendent in the 45th Ward managing about 100 people. Previously he ran an own business for 5 years, Corona's coffee in Chicago. Corona has a degree in Political Science. He has close connection with to the police force and he pride himself of personally having been involved in stopping drug sales and crimes on the streets.

Adam Corona is my choice. His independence, experience with the management of the city services and his active engagement in safety and his personal relations with the police makes him to the best Alderman for the 26th Ward.
Continues below.

  • Susanne,
I already planned to vote for Corona but it's nice to hear that you came to the same conclusion as I did. Thank you.

I voted for Adam Corona today. Hands down the best man for the job!

Looking for a roommate to share my awesome West Town Apartment

Are you or someone you know looking for a place in the West Town/Ukrainian Village neighborhood? I have a two bedroom and am looking for a good human/roommate to share this great space. I have a dog and a cat, laundry in-unit, a great back yard and a fantastic record collection. It is furnished besides the bedroom I am renting, so it would be best if you don't have a TON of furniture. I am a 32 year old female artist type with a regular 9-5 in non-profit. Rent is $550 a month + utilities. If you are interested, lets start the conversation!

Best,
Lauren
