Best place for Oil Change

Hey WRP,
I am in desperate need of an oil change (procrastination on my part). I usually just go to the Marathon gas station on Touhy/Western but I'm wondering if there is a better/cheaper place to go to? Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks much!

  • Jiffy Lube on Touhy/Western does a decent job for just oil. I usually don't get anything else done there but oil changes, though they'll recommend changing every other fluid under the sun on a regular basis.

  • I doubt it's cheaper, but I really like Speedline at 5250 N. Damen. No appointment needed.

  • Essam Your Neighbor

Toyota dealership on Broadway and Bryn Mawr will do a full oil change for cheaper than Jiffy and wash your car!

Workers Taking Your Private Alley Parking?

What should I do if workers on another building are taking our tenants' private alley parking spots to park their work vehicles? I was leaving work this morning and noticed that bricklayer workers are parking in our parking spaces. We've verbally talked with them but they're still doing it. What actions should we take so that they stop?

Parking Problems

Found out today that I do not qualify to receive a truck parking permit because I don't live here, but only work here 45-55 hours a week. I have a pickup truck. Thats it. I'm so frustrated by this.

  • I'd be seriously thinking about selling the pickup and getting a different vehicle.

  • Peter Sifnotis West Ridge Gadfly

Right, but the point is that in a city that claims to be concerned with the working class, its policies disproportionately impact the poor. I am able to afford a $1200, 21-year-old truck. I shouldn't have to buy a more expensive car to skirt the backwards vehicle sticker pricing. At least the truck permit is free. But still, this doesn't help those who work in the city but live in the suburbs.

No one can deny the progressive record that Bob Fioretti had as an Alderman. A record most other Alderman would fear even thinking about. It was that record of working with progressive groups, experience on the city council, and sponsoring legislation that drew myself and others to Bob.

I can't speak on why he ended up endorsing Rahm, yet I feel it is akin to a strawman arguement.

With that said, I am not happy at all with his current decision, but not going to linger around on it. Countless former Fioretti supporters have already long been supporting and working to elect Chuy, remove Rahm, and reclaim Chicago. Alderman Scott Waguespack (32nd Ward) has come out strongly endorsing Chuy as well.

It is not an anybody but Rahm thing. The candidates I supported each had exemplary track records in fighting for reform and change in in their respective spheres from Karen Lewis to Bob Fioretti to now Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.

There is information about Chuy that would never fit in an Everyblock post. I suggest you check out his website and social media for his agenda, activities, and see the type of trustable individuals involved in the groundswell of support. He has more of a financial plan for the future of this city than Rahm and his paid media want us to think.

Rahm has been terrible for Chicago. Broken promises, wrong priorities. A Mayor who works for hedge funds, banks, and corporations and looks to Hollywood for support. We have a chance to make Chicago once again work for its hard working taxpayers and families. Chuy has a record of focusing on the needs of communities, has indeed been a coalition builder (not saying that as a cliche) and has displayed those efforts throughout his career as a City, State, and County elected official and leader of what is now one of the strongest non-profits in Illinois.

Congratulations. It's unfortunate that the Chicago Park District does not publicize good news like this. It's not even listed in the News section of the Park District's home page on the web. They have not even publicized Governor Rauner's freezing of State grants that will affect a total of 27 Chicago projects at 25 parks across Chicago which stand to lose $28 million for scheduled improvements. “The Governor talks about a shared sacrifice, but his budget and decisions to freeze previously awarded grants ask the children and families of Chicago to do all of the sacrificing,” said Mayor Emanuel.

Water Bill for 2 Flat Home, urgent question!

Hello all, my father owns a 2 flat home, non metered account. His last bill was charged over $900 for 6 months. Does this sound about right?? (2 floors, $490 for water, $480 for sewer usage). We are trying to figure out what other homeowners are paying for 2 flat or 2 floor 25' homes. We are considering installing a meter, and most likely will

  • T&K

I called the water department. I was told I have a leaky toilet or faucet, and that it was recorded by the meter reader last September. I was never informed. The water department has a way of determining leaks, but no process in place to inform the owner of the finding. At least now I know and can do something about it. Thank you, neighbors!

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

How can the homeowner not be informed? "No process in place" means that the job of follow-up has not been specifically assigned. We can no longer expect workers to use common sense in things like this. Instead the city keeps the info on file in case the owner gets an unexpectedly large bill and calls about it. The city that works doesn't anymore.

Good morning neighbors,

So far, (thankfully) no injuries have been reported.

My whole family was abruptly awoken by the shots, which were very close to our building (we live right by one of the entrances to Warren Park). We did not see anything suspicious, but more than eight shots were clearly heard.

About eight minutes later, we saw police cars patrolling the area.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have lived in the same place for more than seven years and this is the first time that we have noticed an increase in such activity/occurrences.

I have attended past CAPS meetings and while the police do encourage for positive loitering group formation and community patrolling, only so much can be done when half of the neighborhood's residents are sound asleep.

I know many fellow neighbors begin their work day as early as 4:00 AM and I would hate to think that one of them gets hurt while these unnecessary acts of violence are taking place right outside our homes.

Has anyone else heard/seen anything suspicious during these past few weeks?

I am definitely attending the next CAPS meeting to find out what exactly is going on (hopefully police have some idea).

Mary, Zehra Quadri's plans were not contingent on her becoming alderman. I don't know where you got the Ridge/Devon location; none was specified. She is looking at various locations around the ward. Her first priority at the moment is the opening of the commercial test kitchen at her community resource center, ZAM's Hope, on Arteesian. She's preparing for a zoning change hearing to make that a reality. In the meantime, she is also working on the textile business. It requires export licensing and other government paperwork that\s time-consuming, but, as originally stated, the textile business will become a realty later this year. I attended last night's meeting on redevelopment of the southeast corner at Devon and McCormick. The proposal is simple: In exchange for green space where the parking lot now stands, a developer proposes to tear down the theater and car wash and build a 3-story storage facility. The key to the project is the green space. The developer won't go ahead without it. Once the asphalt is torn up and replaced by turf, the deal would close in 45 days and demolition would begin.

Many at the meeting feel that only a business with no need for parking can be built at what is referred to as the "gateway" to West Ridge. Although redeveloping the theater as a cultural center was also proposed, representatives of the property owner were not interested.

The feeling of many at the meeting is that anything is better than what's there now--two buildings that the owner has neglected, that have attracted taggers and other criminals (the buildings have been broken into) and that have become an eyesore. There was equal feeling that we can do better than a storage facility. The site has been in this state for years. I think a few more weeks of community input won't hurt.

JCCWRP leaders are meeting with Chicago Park District officials later this week to discuss the park district's taking over management of the green space. If CPD declines, the community through one of its neighbor organizations could assume responsibility. There are many unanswered questions.

It's important that a much larger cross-section of the community attend the next meeting. This is close to being a done deal. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is ready to tear up the asphalt ASAP. Once that's done, the community has no say in the project.

Another meeting will be scheduled. A fuller explanation of what happened is on my blog.

I'm wondering what (or who) the intended target was-- since the direction of the shots are still not identified.

I've been living in the area for 8 years and I've only witnessed one drive by shooting (same intersection, actually-- five years ago). The intended target was a rival gang member walking his dog who was injured but got away in a separate car.

Has anyone else in the area noticed any increase in violence and shootings that go unreported by the media?

With the lack of parking in the area, I am always making rounds trying to find parking after work around 12:30. The fact that this happened right on my block, when neighbors are walking their dog or walking home-- is unsettling.

In an effort to combat catalytic converter thefts in Chicago, aldermen are pushing to make it more difficult for thieves to sell the stolen parts.

Catalytic converter theft is a growing problem because it doesn't take long to remove the part and it contains precious metals like platinum that fetch a good return on the resale market, according to the proposed ordinance by Southwest Side Ald. Marty Quinn, 13th.

Quinn's measure would prohibit secondhand dealers, junk peddlers and pawn shops from dealing in catalytic converters, and let motor vehicle repair shops and recycling facilities know from whom they can accept converters and how to dispose of them.

It's unclear how large a deterrent the ordinance will be, since such guidelines would not prevent people from trying to sell the stolen parts online or taking them to a neighboring suburb that doesn't have such strict rules.

But in a news release, Quinn predicted the measure "will directly impact my constituents and help to improve neighborhoods in the 13th Ward."

The ordinance also specifically points to "a spate" of catalytic converter thefts this year from cars parked on streets in the Armour Square neighborhood.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is also sponsoring the ordinance, which was assigned to the Public Safety Committee.

The Garbage

Wow it's a mess out there. Now that the snow is melting, that's all I see is garbage, everywhere I look. I'm new to Chicago. Who's responsible for cleaning it up? The City? Property owners? Tenants? Volunteers? No one?

  • Who is responsible for the traffic circles? Does the city maintain those?

  • Julia Z-N Andersonville Dog Mama

The city is technically responsible for the traffic circles, however, many of them are cared for through community cooperative efforts. The degree of care they get depends on if there is a local gardener who takes them on. The one at the end of my block has been mowed down by drunks at least 4 times. A neighbor goes out and takes care of the hardier survivors. I always pity the poor little trees that are planted on them.

My sister shared a site she found through ND that recommends the right TV service based on channels you want:www.10channels.com. It's telling me a bundle from AT&T would be $50 less each month for the next year. The Internet speed looks fast. There's another good offer from DIRECT if we want a satellite.

Before I call, has anybody tried AT&T or a satellite? If so, how is the connection and speed? Does heavy rain make a difference? Thank you for your help :-)

Dennis hit the nail on the head. I have a roku. I pay for internet and Netflix, but I just "borrow" friends accounts to get HBO, showtime, Amazon prime, hulu plus and so forth. I spend 80 bucks max for Internet and roku content. Ditching cable altogether was a great money saver

There are a lot of great comments on this thread for Susan to consider.

As a tech person my recommendations are that you NOT switch to AT&T U-Verse because DSL is much slower than cable for Internet access and AT&T is going to be even slower moving forward (BTW, 5gb of download is SLOW!). Unfortunately, AT&T has botched U-Verse and, in my opinion, it isn't even close to Cable access for speed.

I would recommend you go (stay) w/cable for Internet connection and only get basic TV offering w/Internet access for ~$59/mo. Try to get at least 25gb download speed to avoid buffering and for HD resolution.

Then just add a Roku, AppleTV or Amazon Fire for streaming. Apple just lowered the price of Apple TV box to $69. You can get a Roku 2 for as little as $29. With these boxes you can then access Netflix, Amazon Prime or (only on) Apple TV add HBO Now for $14.99/mo. Amazon Prime is a great deal and costs $99/year, plus you get free 2-day shipping.

Within a couple of years all content is going to be app driven, like HBO Now. You'll be able to chose your "channels" ala carte: Netflix for movies, ESPN for sports, HBO Now for movies and series, Showtime Anytime for more movies and different content, etc. Plus you'll pay a lot less than you do now. Best of all the cable companies will be relegated to just being the "dumb pipe" that connects to your home for like $29/mo. But by then we should be able to get Google Fiber to the Home for 100gb speeds at just $29/mo.

As far as Satellite goes, my friends who have either DirecTV or Dish love it. Yes, you do have occasional problems w/weather but that kinda goes w/the territory. But if you're going to go Satellite, then you should really add premium content too but that may defeats the purpose. Satellite is by far the most expensive solution for you because you'll need to contract a/cable company for Internet access or w/AT&T for "naked" DSL.

    Good luck!
