And Robyn, did you bother to read any article? Minimum wage increases have been implemented in Oakland, SF and April 1st Seattle, and nothing you believe actually happens.

  • Joe, it was written by a self-identified conservative, who writes for a conservative economic policy group. He has an agenda he is pushing and this article isn't saying anything new. Joe, it was written by a self-identified conservative, who writes for a conservative economic policy group. He has an agenda he is pushing and this article isn't saying anything new. It confirms people's beliefs who already think this way. I'm waiting for the hard evidence, not conjecture and fear. I happen to think that a rise in minimum wage is a good thing all around. There may be bad unintended consequences, but I really don't understand the conservative perspective not on paying people better...other than the wealthy keep on getting wealthier.

I am trying to keep this to a logical argument, but you are putting little faith in people and your 20 or $100 argument is a little silly. Nobody is taking your $15 dollars/ hour. People earning on a more equal scale would be better for the middle class that you are concerned about. I thought conservative were all about letting people do what they want with their money? You are saying that $15 is bad because people won't save it or spend it the way that you think they should.

Anyway, I'm sorry, I don't buy into fear politics and although I wholeheartedly disagree with your argument, I respect your opinion. Time will tell though.

consequences of minimum-wage increases, research by the Institute for the Study of Labor,University of California economist David Neumark, each 10% hike in the minimum wage has caused a 1% to 2% drop in youth employment. Federal Reserve of Chicago found an increase in fast-food prices associated with wage change.
Business labor-cost increases offset by increase in prices. Oakland, restaurants are raising prices by 20%, SF Chronicle “some of the city’s top restaurateurs fear they will lose customers to higher prices.” are eliminating tips as they raise prices.
this change in compensation practices has reduced the take-home pay for some of the employees it was supposed to help: Oakland restaurant Homestead, servers are taking “a substantial pay cut,” earning a flat wage of $18 to $24 an hour, no tips instead of the $35 to $55 an hour they were earning when tips were included.
SF retailer Borderlands Books, the owner announced that the city’s $15 minimum wage would put him out of business, because the prices of his products were already printed on the covers.
The Abbot’s Cellar—forthcoming $15 minimum wage, compelled its owners to close. the restaurant had no ability to absorb the added cost, and neither a miraculous increase in sales volume nor higher prices were viable options.
These aren’t isolated. In the SoMa neighborhood, a vegetarian diner called The Source closed in January, citing the higher minimum wage. Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, 10 restaurants or grocery stores opted to permanently close this year. Salvation Army’s child-care facility is “scrambling to find ways to keep the doors open” in response to labor cost increases

Today, $0.25 of every Illinois tax dollar is spent on pensions. The state’s unfunded liability has grown to more than $111 billion, despite $0.90 of every dollar from the temporary $31 billion tax hike going to pensions.

Benefits for Illinois’ state-government workers are out of line with what is offered in the private sector. The average Illinois government worker earns $13,000 more in benefits than the average private-sector worker.

Illinois has $0.39 of every dollar it should have in the bank today to pay for future pension benefits.
More than 8,000 government retirees receive more than $100,000 in annual pensions.
More than 60% of Illinois’ government pensioners retire before the age of 60.
Top pensioners will collect more than 100 times the amount they contributed to the system.
By 2029, Illinois will spend more on pensions than education.
Teachers in two-thirds of Illinois school districts pay little to nothing toward their own retirement. Instead, the school districts pay the “employee” share of retirement savings.

The Illinois Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the pension law signed by former Gov. Pat Quinn in December 2013, Senate Bill 1. This is the final legal step to determine the constitutionality of the pension-reform law.

While many opportunities to find much-needed savings within the state’s pension systems could be thwarted should the court strike down SB 1, there are reforms that Rauner can enact immediately to stop the bleeding. Chief among these is to move all new workers to 401(k)-style retirement plans going forward.

The most insidious pension problem of all, politician-controlled retirement systems, must be addressed if the state is to end its pension woes.

Vote for Rahm

  • Chicago police pension fund in 60% underfunded. The Chicago teachers pension is hopelessly grim.
