Gunfire or Fireworks?

I just heard what may have been gunfire near Belden and Kedvale. I'm hoping it was fireworks but now several cop cars have arrived at the corner. Did anybody else hear it?

  • Bill Billo

Fireworks go "pop" or "boom" Gunshots go "Crack, crack, crack"

  • The cops arrived, so someone dialed 911, but could you also dial 911 next time, when you suspect gunfire, Kim and readers?

Quick response by the cops...

Just want to give kudos to the cops for a quick response last night. I went out to my car and saw that my neighbors kids had dressed up a Halloween skeleton and placed half of it into the street to simulate a body. Usually my attitude would be kids will be kids but these kids are really bad and the household they reside in is filled with gangbanger arrogance(they do what they want and when they want) so anyways...

Just want to give kudos to the cops for a quick response last night. I went out to my car and saw that my neighbors kids had dressed up a Halloween skeleton and placed half of it into the street to simulate a body. Usually my attitude would be kids will be kids but these kids are really bad and the household they reside in is filled with gangbanger arrogance(they do what they want and when they want) so anyways I called the cops and within minutes a narc stop told them to knock it off but didn't do much. A little upset that they didn't question the parents but then a second cop drove by and they seemed upgraded. So then a couple of minutes later another suv should up and these cops meant business and took the skeleton and told the kids to go in the house, one knucklehead decide he's all man and said something to the cop which caused him to be detained. . Long story short these annoying kids didn't come back out and the cops seem more responsive because its not first time I called on these kids.. So everyone pls call in any dangerous and obnoxious activity, we need to stop letting these things happen or escalate..

  • Everyone deserves a living wage. All wealth is produced by labor, and for allies April 15, is fight for 15$ nationwide.

Your source is a libertarian journal. It is biased. Baby sitters make more than $10 an hour, your examples are curious. Again, nobody is taking your money. Is someone asking you to take a pay cut? It is common sense for conservative CEO's and other people who like to conserve their money, but not to the majority of Americans. You and I both know that there is a widening gap between the rich and the poor.
Also, I don't know what politicians this is helping, that statement is just confusing to me. Just look at Illinois, we have a billionaire governor and a very millionaire mayor who are both very adept at helping themselves out.

In the not to distant pass,I moved back to Chicago, and took a huge pay cut to work at a major institution that most Chicagoan's and beyond love. People were jealous of my job when I told them what it was. It was a very specialized job that requires a lot of experience. Unfortunately, although this place kept hiring more middle managers, It paid people like me, who handled all their assets, not much more than I could have made an entry level retail job. They had the money, they just didn't want to share it. When other cities, and Rahm started talking about raising the minimum wage, miraculously, this institution found some money and started paying people in that position closer to the national average. I have moved on, but now my former co-workers have money to buy things and are looking to buy houses and ect. Nobody got hurt and now there is more money being spread around.

  • Joe

And Robyn, did you bother to read any article? Minimum wage increases have been implemented in Oakland, SF and April 1st Seattle, and nothing you believe actually happens.

Joe, it was written by a self-identified conservative, who writes for a conservative economic policy group. He has an agenda he is pushing and this article isn't saying anything new. It confirms people's beliefs who already think this way. I'm waiting for the hard evidence, not conjecture and fear. I happen to think that a rise in minimum wage is a good thing all around. There may be bad unintended consequences, but I really don't understand the conservative perspective not on paying people better...other than the wealthy keep on getting wealthier.

I am trying to keep this to a logical argument, but you are putting little faith in people and your 20 or $100 argument is a little silly. Nobody is taking your $15 dollars/ hour. People earning on a more equal scale would be better for the middle class that you are concerned about. I thought conservative were all about letting people do what they want with their money? You are saying that $15 is bad because people won't save it or spend it the way that you think they should.

Anyway, I'm sorry, I don't buy into fear politics and although I wholeheartedly disagree with your argument, I respect your opinion. Time will tell though.

Federal Reserve of Chicago found an increase in fast-food prices associated with wage change.
Business labor-cost increases offset by increase in prices. Oakland, restaurants are raising prices by 20%, SF Chronicle “some of the city’s top restaurateurs fear they will lose customers to higher prices.” are eliminating tips as they raise prices.
this change in compensation practices has reduced the take-home pay for some of the employees it was supposed to help: Oakland restaurant Homestead, servers are taking “a substantial pay cut,” earning a flat wage of $18 to $24 an hour, no tips instead of the $35 to $55 an hour they were earning when tips were included.
SF retailer Borderlands Books, the owner announced that the city’s $15 minimum wage would put him out of business, because the prices of his products were already printed on the covers.
The Abbot’s Cellar—forthcoming $15 minimum wage, compelled its owners to close. the restaurant had no ability to absorb the added cost, and neither a miraculous increase in sales volume nor higher prices were viable options.
These aren’t isolated. In the SoMa neighborhood, a vegetarian diner called The Source closed in January, citing the higher minimum wage. Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce, 10 restaurants or grocery stores opted to permanently close this year. Salvation Army’s child-care facility is “scrambling to find ways to keep the doors open” in response to labor cost increases
