SOS at Animal Control

Animal control is COMPLETELY FULL.
Because of this they will be killing tons of adoptable animals. Please if you can foster or adopt let me know ASAP. Fostering is free and temporary. Please share this to your Facebook statuses.

Sorry Jessica...there have been many scandals with nfps. Red cross, United Way, Chicago nfps are being investigated by the IRS for not using $$ as it was appropriated.

My point is to scrutinize so that one is not swept up in a feel good event and then gets stuck. Some get stuck with very sick animals and can't afford the thousands it costs to treat animals with serious illnesses.

Every nfp and every household can bleed about not having enough money; when many are just inefficient.

A nfp in my neighborhood gave a FLY DUMPER the ok to dump wood chips. They came back and dumped 150 truckloads on 5 locales totalling 50 vacant lots mostly owned by the city.

The nfp was the catalyst, like it or not. They also did not have authority to authorize an illegal fly dumper to dump wood chips on city owned land. They did NOTHING to help get these 150 truckloads of debris cleaned up off of 50 vacant lots.

For those who don't know; using wood chips and barley malt as growing materials attracts RATS.

These are unintended consequences that happen as a by product of people wanting to do good. None every come back and clean up the chips or the rats.

We have lots of battles on my block. Streets and San, Chicago Dept of Transportation, CPD, Sewer/Water....would u like to come and help with these problems? We could use some advocates.

Actually ADOPTING pets is better than being a foster donor.

And, getting the word out for people who buy pets and abandoning them quickly is a inhumane thing to do...would also round out the picture Those who acquire pets should be responsible for the animal until it passes away.

  • Jen

Adopting pets is great but fostering would actually help more animals bc you can continuously provide a place for new animals that would otherwise be killed to go to

Recommend Company to do Network and A/V Wiring for New Home?

We are building a new home in Logan Square, and need some expertise on the Network, Audio/Visual wiring design of the house.

Our electrician says he can run the cables any way we'd like, but we were looking for someone who can help with the design, picking the correct materials and making sure the right work is done.

Any recommendations?

Christmas trees??

I finally live in an apartment with very tall ceilings and am very excited to have a nice, tall Christmas tree this year. Any suggestions for where I can go in the area to buy a tree this year??

  • Used to go to Gethsemane even though it was far (it was close to my mom's and we had a tradition of buying our trees together). For the past couple of years, I've gone to Christy Weber on Grand. Trees have held their needles well.

  • Thank you all for the tips!!!

TRIBUNE: Fate of STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK signs

Mid-intersection street mounted sign Milwaukee at Sawyer went MIA early spring 2014. I asked Alderman Rey Colon about replacement. Answer: ~$500 cost must come from 35th Ward Aldermanic menu funds, not City/CDOT budget. So I contacted Mr. Hilkevitch since:
1. in street mounted signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK are visual cue that enhances Pedestrian Safety. Milwaukee Ave location has 25,000 vehicles/day AND is heavily used by pedestrians day & evening on City designated PEDESTRIAN ORIENTED STREET in heart of vibrant Logan Square business district.
2. signs are intrinsically subject to wear/damage and getting plowed over by (idiot) drivers
3. CDOT/City annual budget should anticipate replacement cost for these signs, like replacement of Stop, Tow Zone, No Parking etc which come from City budget, not Alderman ward menu funds
4. Red Light and Schools/Parks cameras bring in ~$100,000,000 per yr. It's not Mayor Emanuel slush fund to plug police overtime etc. Public Safety & real leadership means: take some of that $ and pay to replace damaged signs STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS IN CROSSWALK as needed.

The DUI KING of City Council, Alderman Rey Colon offered this comment in Tribune: "These signs are very popular with constituents who request them often," Colon said. But he said the average life of the signs "is like freshly cut flowers that wither and die."

Alderman: it's time for your political career to do the same.

  • I'm impressed the Tribune was able to get a response out of Colon. I've contacted his office in the past about that very sign at Sawyer & Milwaukee and been ignored. I live on the west side of Milwaukee and it actually discourages me from visiting businesses on the east side of Milwaukee since it is so dangerous to cross there without the sign. There was a huge difference in the frequency of people stopping before and after the sign was placed there.

  • The pedestrian crosswalks is a nice concept if they actually worked.

Recently of couple of thugish loiterers were just hanging out on our corner, making signs to passing cars and such. My neighbor was out there working on his car, and I joined him. We talked about the guys and stared at them. Other neighbors would pass by and we'd ask them loudly enough, 'who are these guys, you know them?', just to make it plain that we were all taking notice.

The dudes split after about 15 minutes of this. Can't say for sure the awkwardness we created was why they left, but they haven't been back.

i don't see much of a distinction, it's still an ad regardless of who posts it. how can you tell if the person posting is a tenant or a landlord? if you make exceptions that are easy to get around, you're left with no rule at all.

  • I'm sorry if I upset anyone. I thought since there was an option to check to post about needing a place to live I could post here. I thought it would be better on here to share with the community that we were looking for someone to take over our lease. We are not a broker or the management company. And also maybe someone on here had a friend or relative looking to move to the area.

We have been in the neighborhood a little over 20 years and I would say this behavior comes in waves. I do recommend having a can of paint or graffiti remover yourself as it is best just to cover/remove these tags as quickly as you can. The taggers will get bored of your garage more quickly then and will choose a different target. Talk to your neighbors and work together to communicate about any tagging or suspicious activity.

As far as worrying...I wouldn't lose any sleep over this as it is random and nothing against you personally.

Lost dog near Altgeld and California named "Louie"

Around 6.30am when I was out walking my dog a neighbor was calling for his dog, Louie (Louis?).

He seemed distraught, and in not shire if he's posted here yet. He described Louie as a brown / tan, very large pit bull. He lives in the apartments on he corner of Altgeld and California above Mops Beauty. I didn't get a name or apartment number.

If anyone has seen Louie, feel free to message me and I'll try to find the owner.

Keep a lookout for Louie, it's cold out there!

  • If you find the owner, tell him to post flyers all over the area right away-it can be very effective. Thanks for helping out.

  • I live nearby on Logan and will keep my eye out. Please let us know if he finds him.

About those EB Daily Digest Crime Reports...

Sometimes the crime listed is not readily understood from the description. The link below is to the Illinois State Police Uniform Crime Reporting Offense Codes. You can get the crime from the EB Daily Digest, then refer to the Codes for the applicable IL statute, then just Google the statute number found under ILCS Reference.

E.G., Deceptive Practice: Unauthorized Videotaping, 720-5/26-4.

Offense Codes: https://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/6-260.pdf

(The CPD CLEARMAP pages also attempt to define the crimes, but not nearly as well: http://gis.chicagopolice.org/clearmap/crime_types.html .)

Need HVAC

Greetings fellow neighbors-

Need of your expertise/advise on this matter. My furnace's circulating water pump is making a loud noise when starting and the noise continues while operational. Can anyone recommend a solution and/or reasonable HVAC technician?

Thank you, all.

  • @Morgan-- Love radiators. We kept ours, too, and did SpacePak for air conditioning. It is expensive, but there is no way that we wanted to switch to forced air. Rough estimate is ~$12,000 for a 1600 sf floor.

  • i am an hvac tech in chicago 25 years exp. the noise from your pump if it is a series 100 B&G is from the spring coupler between the motor and impeller housing. it is a reasonable repair. u can reach me at 773 988 2093 if u need assitance

Need to rent or borrow a table

Hi there - I'm hosting t-giving for more people than I have table space for. I think I'll need one more table, ideally a folding, adjustable-height table that is as close to 6' long and 3' wide (seems most folding ones are no wider than 30"). Anybody know of a place to rent one table from? I could probably buy one for the same cost but don't have anywhere to store it afterward.

  • linda's flower shop on armitage at milwaukee rents folding tables and chairs for cheap

  • Loulu Me

FYI Card and Party Warehouse (Belmont just west of Pulaski) rents chairs and tables, and has lots of other great stuff for sale. When they had just a couple of the bags I wanted for shower favors and I needed far more, they ordered them right up for me no problem. Shopping local, not corporate is something to think about for your future needs this store meets.

Car vandalism

Keep your eyes on the streets. My car was vandalized while I was away on vacation. 2 passenger side wheels taken and the car put up on cinder blocks
Altgeld at Richmond. Nothing taken or other damage to the car that I know of.

  • It's so hard to get over the helpless and violated feeling when someone steals a part off your car. It's such an expensive thing to fix and most people have no choice but to use street parking and leave their car vulnerable. Myself included. I had my catalytic converter stolen at Belden and Kedzie just a month ago. Some people really suck.

It's a longshot, but looking for my iPhone

It's in red case with my driver's license and cash card (suspended). really need the drivers license cause i can't get my clarion d without it…lost saturday morning somewhere between the chase on milwaukee east of california and the pierogi place (Polak Eatery) on california (driving, but who knows, i could have put it on top of my car). it's locked but "offline" so can't track it. $100 buck reward (that buys a lot of pierogis) and no questions asked.

  • the problem with the 3G now and even the 4 is that they cannot handle the new iphone software, so I've heard, which of course is just another way that apple inadvertently forces customers to get the newest model when they don't need it otherwise. correct me if I'm wrong, Lanny

  • Lanny Grilly Own Logan Square Studio (performances & recording)

The 3Gs was a huge upgrade from the 3g & it runs the very stable i06. Apple made this phone for 3 years, and it still is considered the best phone Apple made. It doesn't have all the bells & whistles that the newer iphones have, but it is still the most stable & sturdy of them all. Transit Oriented Development, Milwaukee/California Community Feedback

There was another thread that I started that got a little long. Thought I'd start a fresh one to house thoughts on the idea of TOD near the California El station, as the developer goes back to the drawing board to work on a revised, scaled-back plan. Here's some recent feedback from the group "Save Our Boulevards" and a link to follow offering a different view.

  • 2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for...

2221 N. Milwaukee got his feedback from the GGNA:

The GGNA Zoning and Planning Committee (ZAPC) and neighbors who live near 2211 N. Milwaukee Ave met on March 10 with the project team for that address. We reviewed their request for an up zoning from C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development for a 7 story building with 135 rental units.
The plans as presented and the request for up zoning to C1-1 to C1-5/Planned Development were not regarded favorably by the ZAPC for the following reasons:
1.) The seven story building is too massive and will be completely out of character and scale with the surrounding neighborhood buildings. The ZAPC recommends that the building height be no more than 5 stories with different heights along the street. Higher sections of the building should be closer to the bank and be lower closer to Talman.
2.) The additional car density was also a big concern. This project should not move forward until alley, street traffic and parking exits have been reviewed at a community meeting and changes have been approved by CDOT. This building is one block from Goethe Elementary School where there are already traffic backups and more cars going north on Talman will add to those problems. The alley behind the building will also become congested. There are also not enough parking spaces for both the retail unit(s) on the first floor and for one space per unit, which will cause more parking issues both on Milwaukee and the nearby interior streets. This project is also one block from the Congress Theater that has historically brought in 5,000 plus people, many arriving in cars for events several times a week.
3.) The size of the building will also create problems for surrounding neighbors by blocking sunlight and creating wind tunnels that will adversely affect both pedestrians and bicyclists.

  • 4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees...

4.) Although a green roof is being planned for the top of the building, the developers said it will not be accessible to residents; only on the third floor. And there is no green space being planned on the street level on a pedestrian zoned street except a few trees in the parkway. The project team also did not mention any green building standards being used in construction of this building.
5.) The project team agreed to provide 14 affordable housing units, the required 10%, in proportion to the range of apartment types. The ZAPC would like to see those affordable units made a requirement of this project with no donations to the city affordable housing fund allowed.
6.) The project team referred to Plan B of the Milwaukee Ave Plan as a basis for the project height and density. They had no comment when it was pointed out that there was also a Plan A which called for buildings no higher than 4 stories.
7.) The ZAPC needs more clearly detailed dimensional elevations for the project.
We strongly recommend that Alderman Moreno not approve the current zoning request and plans as presented to the group. We would welcome the project team to come back to another ZAPC meeting after making changes in their plans based on the community concerns.
