Inexpensive hair colorist suggestions?

Hi neighbors,

I'm pretty new to the area. My hair is in desperate need of hair color retouching.

Wondering if any of you know of an experienced hair colorist who doesn't charge an arm and a leg for some simple bleach/tone/color service but who would also be able to help maintain the integrity of my hair.

My grown out roots need your help. Thanks in advance!

  • Brandon G Brewer. Engineer. Human.

Keep an eye out on here, cause there is someone who posts that every Monday, they have appointments for free coloring. They may be a school or something like that, but its worth checking out if its free, right?

I moved here from Boston pretty recently so my metrics may be off but the prices there seem very reasonable to me and they have a discount when there's a full moon (I think maybe 25 percent?) My hair grows really fast and I am really gray so I need root touch ups pretty frequently and I have been very happy so far. If you're looking for something even less expensive, a lot of my co-workers see students at the Aveda Institute downtown and all of them have been happy with their color, I think you just have to be willing to sit there for a long time (I'm not.)

2 stolen bicycles in the last few weeks

Recently my son had his bike stolen from the California blue line, it was locked. He got a second used old bike and a new ulock and that was stolen last night. Any suggestions?

I'm sorry that you've had this experience at a Blue Line stop. Over time, and with experience, we've had many bikes stolen at Blue line. Now we go with 3 locks: a ulock to secure frame and front tire, a cable lock to secure front tire & frame & back tire, and an AXA ring lock from Holland to secure the back tire. EVEN then, thieves have stolen our seats, which we had to get replaced at Boulevard Bikes. A few weeks ago, I kid you not, a thief stole the PLASTIC CONNECTOR for my wife's headlight & rearlight (which we dutifully remove) that luckily Oscar Wastyn graciously replaced for free. In short, I feel you. It's getting to the point where every bit has to be locked. And I just read yesterday that a guy had his bike attached to a TREE, which the thieves cut down to get the bike. I'm constantly amazed.

Water Bill?

How much is your water bill? and how is your house?

  • Leonardo Giron one improvement at a time..

Finally after three months, they just confirmed the install. So after Monday I'll be metered up. Question my bi annual water bill is due at the end of this month so do I get credit. ? I paid half already.

  • One huge water-waster is a leaky toilet. My bills went up a great deal and it was because of a defective toilet valve that was wasting water 24 hours a day. Because the city bases the sewer charge on water consumption, you pay double for every gallon you waste.

Lose a bicycle wheel?

A bicycle wheel turned up in my yard yesterday. It doesn't belong to anyone who lives in my building. Did anyone have a bicycle wheel stolen recently? It has a few pretty distinctive characteristics, so let me know what it looks like if you think it's yours. I live near the intersection of Sacramento and Fullerton.

  • Any chance it is a dark blue rimland a treadles tire? Had one stolen late last week.

Over Night Blue Line Construction

Our bedroom face the Western Blue Line stop. We are used to sleeping through the standard train sounds, but last night, they began night construction and we were awake for the entire thing. Although loud, the actual machinery is tolerable. What kept us up was the intermittent sound of boards or something similar being thrown from the el into large metal dumpsters on the ground. Every time I dozed off for a second, BOOM! Anyone know how long this is supposed to last? Should they be throwing materials from the tracks? I am exhausted.

  • Can you go on the website and get more information about construction?

Sadly, city services has different 'rules' as I learned from 606. But file a complaint with the city anyway...everyone needs to sleep...

Alderman Joe Moreno gets $3,000 from Live Nation / House of Blues

Alderman Joe Moreno (Ward 1) just received $3,000 of heartfelt love from Music Megalopoly Corporation LIVE NATION / HOUSE OF BLUES. Perhaps related to a deal for CONGRESS THEATRE ?

Only Alderman Brendan Reilly (Ward 42 / Streeterville) has also received HOB $ (mere $1500 per year, less than Moreno). HOB concert/restaurant venue in Chicago is in Ald. Reilly's downtown city ward.

We will do a back ground check and ask a ton of questions which I think is understandable for any parent seeking for anyone to care for the children. This has been my last resort to look for someone. If you or someone you know may be interested please email me.

Hoyne and Armitage attack

Date: 08/19/2014
ChicagoPoliceBadge
A man, 45, was walking along the 2000 block of W. Hoyne Ave., near Armitage Ave., in Bucktown, when he was attacked at 10:45 p.m. Mon., Aug. 18.

The offenders were a group of four to five black 16 to 18 year-olds, according to Officer Janel Sedevic in News Affairs, Chicago Police Department. He was punched in the face and had his cell phone stolen.

Unable to call the police from the scene, he went elsewhere to call but refused medical attention, despite his bruises.

Area North Detectives are investigating.

  • Sorry to hear about that Lyle and thanks for sharing. All that glitters isn't gold and no matter where you are you have to be on your toes. Sure XOCO opens up in Wicker Park and then not too far from there Lyle gets jumped. I am sure this wasn't the case but whenever I see a pack of people regardless of race I make it a point to walk on the other side of the street, unless its a bachelorette party.

  • Horrible. What's up with the little thugs and thug groups around wicker / bucktown lately?

Good thing he didn't fight back - or he'd be a racist?

Stonework on the bottom part of building facades

Hi! Does anyone know what you call the stonework on the bottom part of building facades? A prime example is the new exterior on Cozy Corner. A lot of the new modern single family homes in the neighborhood have this stone on their front exterior too. I am looking to get something similar on my home but don't know what it's called or what kind of contractor to look for to do it. Any advice to head me in the right direction would be great! Thanks.

  • Melody Stanley Crafty/Techy Geek

I would call it "stone facing" but the actual material can be stone or realistic looking faux stone.

  • Melody Stanley Crafty/Techy Geek

With real stone you could go with a fixer mason, but there are also companies that specialize in stone facing.

  • DL Police officer

My family has had a masonry company in Ukrainian village since the 50's. I've never heard of a fixer mason but I'd be glad to take a look at it for you. 773 501 6930 if I can be of help let me know

I have lived close to this garden for over 10 years and have known the owners of the church with attached garden. When they left last year they entrusted a few neighbors with keys to the garden, in case it started to turn into an eye sore....as they wouldn't know how it would be cared for being back in Puerto Rico. Last year I spoke with the new renters and they assured me that they "had it....don't worry...we've got the garden under control." But, as the year has worn on....I've watched this lovely little garden become an over grown viney-jungle of sorts. It breaks my heart. I know the original owners would never have wanted that. I'm rarely on everyblock, but have been told that this garden has been mentioned before. Are there people that want to help go over and help clean it up? I have a set of keys, and the original owners gave me permission to help with it's up keep. I think I have given the renters enough time to show how much they care/ and how well they will keep up with the garden. I think it's time to see if we might be able to start a little group that might meet up once a month....have pot luck...and keep it clean. I'm unsure how to truly turn it into a "community garden" as I think it is really tied to the church somehow....but I'm sure there would be a way in the future to keep it a garden as long as it is cared for and have it then deeded to the local community. I just wanted to see how many would be interested to help and what weekend might work best for everyone. :)

  • I would also like to help, I have since moved from the neighborhood, but I always loved walking past the garden. It needs to be returned to how I remember it.

What do we do to get our streets fixed?

It's been many months since winter and streets still have 6" deep potholes. It's dangerous for bikers and damages cars. I've called 311 for the deep holes I've found within a few blocks of my house with no results. Guess they only care about new speed cameras, red light and street cleaning tickets.

  • J. Theo Bucktown resident

I suggest getting some neighbors together, taking up a collection, buy some fill @ Home Depot and fill the holes yourselves. Calling in the local news media to get some footage is a good idea too. Sometimes, we need to make some public noise to garner exposure to these simple problems that our taxes are supposed to cover. You could make a block party out of it, and meet your neighbors too!

  • Love that idea, J. Theo!

Petition for I AM Logan Square to Remove Mark Fishman from their Board

"There is growing vocal discontent about Mark Fishman’s control and usage of the Milwaukee Avenue Arts Festival (MAAF), as a tool to increase his substantial development and real estate holdings."

To find out more about this petition or sign it yourself: http://www.change.org/p/i-am-logan-square-ials-remove-mark-fishman-treasurer-from-your-board?recruiter=30671237&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

  • Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Or, maybe throwing out the baby with the bathwater is more apt? Pick your idiom. Running out the single, largest benefactor of the arts from the neighborhood because you don't like his business model is counter-productive. Worst case, the support for the arts will be gone and he'll still own the buildings. If you have a problem with the buildings, focus on that and leave the positive contributions to the neighborhood alone to be enjoyed by your neighbors.

  • I'm forced to agree with Glenn. The patron gets to call the shots. If you're not happy with the patron's strings on the patronage, it's time to find a different patron. In the artist's world, it is what it is.

When Jim Mitchell said, 'It's a developer's first shot across the bow, clearly designed to maximize the draw for high-value, national tenants," he was right. I've done this dance with developers a few times before and they'll compromise to come closer to "community" demands. But they do have a bottom line and odds are the alderman knows what it is. If you're really concerned what happens, you've got to organize a coherent group and have a stick and a carrot. The stick is usually bad publicity for the alderman and the carrot a hearty handshake. If Colon is stepping down, though, you need to pose a threat to his obvious successors who he might owe a favor and get them to endorse your development agenda (whatever that may be) publicly. But if all you care about is having your property values go up and having a few nice stores, save yourself the work. Logan Square is already on the hipster trajectory to gentrification and bound to be the next Buck Town or Lincoln Square. The question is, who do you love? Right now I'm on my knees praying that Avondale doesn't become hip and I'm glad that Hot Doug's is closing.

“I've indicated to all potential buyers that a grocery store that can handle the narrow site is what we would push for on the site. It's hard to tell who will get the contract,” Waguespack said, echoing many resident complaints that the bustling neighborhood is lacking a conveniently located grocery store.

According to Paul Sajovek, Waguespack's chief of staff, developers at Terraco Real Estate Development & Management said they have a contract option to purchase the site and have issued preliminary concept plans to the alderman's office. Terraco manages a Trader Joe's in Evanston along with more than 100 other large lot markets.

Community meetings on the site's future will begin when the sale and a further preliminary plans are established, Sajovek said.

Lyndale and Drake Lot!

Hello Every Blockers! There is a plot of land on the corner of Lyndale and Drake and we want to take a poll to figure out if we should implement a community garden and/or a playground. I am working towards opening this lot to the community, I'd love some feedback on how we could best utilize this land. We don't want to see another year go by and not have access to this great space! We want to take responsibility for our community and keep Logan Square beautiful and provide a safe place for our families. Arnie are you sure you grew up in Logan Square? My parents moved from there before I was born but lived there with my two older brothers for many years in the late 70s and early-mid 80s. The clean-cut image you're portraying of the area back in the day is NOT accurate. My mom has a lot of stories of getting harassed by people by the eagle monument, which they lived right around the corner from (next to a dive bar that is now a very trendy restaurant). My brothers' toys and bikes were stolen numerous times, and the area looked much grittier (more liquor stores and bars as opposed to trendy restaurants, cafés, and grooming shops. In fact the shady dive bar they used to live next to is now an expensive, trendy restaurant). I never experienced those things living in LS in recent times.

Logan Square and Milwaukee Ave. are clearly much more gentrified now, and with that comes a lot of the clean-up that you seem to have reversed. While less crime is good for the whole neighborhood, including long-time and new residents.. cleaning it up and policing it to the point where it seems like a soulless suburb is not cool. That has already been happening in Logan Square and you are trying to speed up the process. That attitude, and not the kids smoking weed or the winos chilling on the park benches, is what made me want to leave the area.

  • Deb R 60641 resident 40 + yrs.

Arnie's memories sound suspect to me, as well. Unless he grew up there in the 60's like I did. Then Arnie's memories are much more like mine.

Anyone have info about Paradise Garden?

There is a very nice looking garden at the corner of Drake and Lyndale that has a sign calling it Paradise Garden. There are many nice plants there as well as a gazebo and some benches. However, it has a fence surrounding it and I've never seen it unlocked in the year I've been living near it. Does anyone know the story behind this place? Milshire Hotel closing

From DNA info

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140429/logan-square/milshire-hotel-residents-told-find-other-housing

LOGAN SQUARE — The Milshire Hotel, one of Chicago's few remaining single-room housing options for the troubled, will close next month, according to the building’s owner.

The residents have until May 31 to find new places to live.

“After over 43 years in the Logan Square area, I have decided to close the Milshire Hotel,” said a notice to each resident signed “Your Landlord/Friend, Art.”

“I wish you all well, and hope you find another place to live that you will be happy in.”

The tenants union of the Milshire Hotel SRO have come to a settlement requiring tenants to move out by Sept. 2 in exchange for a cash settlement. (Lenny Gilmore)

    By Megan Crepeau, @crepeau, RedEye

Residents of the beleaguered Milshire Hotel agreed Wednesday to move out by 5 p.m. Sept. 2 in exchange for $4,000 per unit and a promise that owners of the single-room occupancy building will not attempt to collect back rent.

Tenants of the Milshire, 2525 N. Milwaukee Ave., have been tussling with management since April, when residents were notified of plans to sell the building and told to vacate. Some residents stayed and formed a tenants union, arguing that they had not been given proper eviction notices and that conditions at the building were so bad that making them leave would be a public hazard. About 18 residents remain in the building, said Tim Mahnke, Milshire tenant and president of the tenants union.

An ordinance passed by the City Council last month prohibits the city from issuing permits for SRO redevelopment for six months or until updated SRO regulation is passed.

In the meantime, if all goes according to plan, the Milshire will stand empty after Labor Day. But the Milshire saga isn't over—a rumored sale to controversial developer Mark Fishman still may be in the works, and the city has filed a legal complaint against the building for its extreme bed bug infestation.

From the plans they showed us the other night the new road will come in across the currently vacant Vienna Beef parcel (where those trucks are parked) and will require the relocation of utilities and front end stuff at the Midtown facility on that side of the street....

    Artist Girl,
From the plans they showed us the other night the new road will come in across the currently vacant Vienna Beef parcel (where those trucks are parked) and will require the relocation of utilities and front end stuff at the Midtown facility on that side of the street. As I understand it they will carve out some of the front of that building for the road but the structure will essentially be where it is now with some entrance and utility modifications. I will try to dig up the plans that they showed us and post them here if I can find them.

    Topher,
It is no longer a flyover situation and now they are dividing the Elston, Damen and Fullerton intersections into 3 separated and distinct intersections.... hard to describe and if I can find the drawings they showed us the other night I will put them up!!
    Thx.

  • Ok if you go to Alderman Waguespack's website you will find stuff there under infrastructure projects. Here is the presentation and at about page 19 you will see the new layout of the intersections.... http://ward32.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/041008.pdf
His general site is http://ward32.org/ if you want to poke around more - there are other docs related to this project.

looking for some moving boxes

if anyone has moving boxes that they'd like to pass along, i'd be happy to pick up. located in Logan Square, so surrounding areas are preferable. thanks!

  • Loulu Me

Check Craigslist for the boxes closest to you. People are ALWAYS giving them away on that site.

  • I noticed that my neighbor put a bunch of moving boxes out in the alley this morning. In the alley just East of Fairfield and South or LeMoyne. I can hold them in my garage for you if they're still there this evening.

  • Thanks, Kevin! Let me know and I'll swing by.

Fire Department hiring

My husband and I just went to lunch at Van Phat and a Chicago Fireman was handing out brochures. They are looking to hire firefighters. The test dates are December 13th and 14th, and the deadline for sign up is September 16th
He said they give the test every ten years. The website is: www.cityofchicago.org/fire application.

  • Giving the test every ten years is ridiculous. Even if they don't think they need to give the test more often because they have armloads of applicants, the test should be given every year at least. It's organizational nepotism, just a slightly more subtle version than Chicago has been infamous for.

Man attacked on HOYNE AVE NEAR ARMITAGE

A man, 45, was walking along the 2000 block of W. Hoyne Ave., near Armitage Ave., in Bucktown, when he was attacked at 10:45 p.m. Mon., Aug. 18.

The offenders were a group of four to five black 16 to 18 year-olds, according to Officer Janel Sedevic in News Affairs, Chicago Police Department. He was punched in the face and had his cell phone stolen.

Unable to call the police from the scene, he went elsewhere to call but refused medical attention, despite his bruises.

Area North Detectives are investigating.

TV & Internet Service for Logan Sq/West Bucktown

I am under contract for a townhouse in Logan Sq/West Bucktown, and I'm wondering what the best options are for TV and internet service... I've been in a highrise with exclusive deal with RCN for the past 12 years, so I have no idea what's out there servicing Chicago, what it costs and how the quality compares. Looking for mid-range services for both... don't need all 500 internet channels but want more than the basics. For internet, something like 20mbps...

I've been in a highrise with exclusive deal with RCN for the past 12 years, so I have no idea what's out there servicing Chicago, what it costs and how the quality compares. Looking for mid-range services for both... don't need all 500 internet channels but want more than the basics. For internet, something like 20mbps service. There is some sort of dish on the roof of the townhouse I'm buying, but I forgot to check and see if it was Dish or Direct TV when I was there for the inspection. Does that even matter? Or will they provide free equipment? Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have had Comcast for both...not good internet would go down and the tech support was horrible! AT&T Internet has been good except they charged me a lot to fix a small issue with my apartments phone line. I have DirecTv mid-range package which has worked for me and my family (wife amd two toddler daughters). They provide equipment and usually give you free NFL Sunday Ticket free for first year(if you are football fan might be a draw). Only complaints are service going out with really bad weather (maybe lasts for 5is mins), canceling Sunday Ticket is a hassle (have to wait until the start of the next year's season, like Aug., before you can do so) and the occasional sales calls (every 6-8 weeks). But theydo give a lot of free previews for extra channels so that is a nice bonus! Hope thay helps and welcome tothe neighborhood!

  • We got Uverse the moment it became available in LS several years ago (not kidding, we were the third install). No problems so far.
