Thank you for the links. I was aware of the city fees and taxes. I also recall Emmanuel said he wouldn't rule out a property tax increase to pay down the pension debt. Here's the sad truth: the prior administration spent all the money and borrowed more. It also allowed the pension deficit to grow larger. Emmanuel inherited this mess--he didn't create it. He's trying to get this back under control and if you think that will be done without more tax revenues you're living in a fantasy world. We are going to pay more somehow--maybe higher property taxes or a sales tax on services such as lawyer's and hairdresser's services. Personally I prefer a city income tax to replace property taxes. Then it's a progressive tax rather than a regressive one and based on something real--not just an estimate by an assessor. The first $15,000 earned could be exempt from the tax so we aren't taking tax money from people earning at poverty level. But long story short, if Garcia says he will not raise taxes then I definitely will not vote for him because it means either he has no idea of the magnitude of the problem or he's out and out lying.

Saying Chuy will raise taxes without acknowledging that Rahm has and will continue to do so is disingenuous. The difference comes down to how those taxes are spent, Rahm has shown his fealty to the corporation "people" (H/T Supreme Court!). Rahm has spent taxpayer money defending corporate contracts and has spent taxpayer money trying to dismantle contracts with people who are our neighbors. Etc., etc.

I, for one, do not want a repeat of the past 4 years.

Artsy Pub Crawl?

I'm looking to put together a pub crawl with an art theme, and I'm specifically looking for restaurants/bars that have local art for sale on the walls. We will be starting in Logan Square but will go anywhere in the city from there. I know Dunlays, Rocking Horse, and the Green Eye typically have art for sale, anyone know of some other good stops?

Mayoral Runoff

Gov. Rauner says he will not be making an endorsement. W. Wilson says on election day he will be meeting with Garcia and expects to endorse him. Gov. Rauner meets with Wilson and asks him to endorse Rahm. Wilson says he is not sure who he will endorse. Hmmmm....what could be afoot?

  • Sighryn Roscoe resident

Ain't nobody care about who Wilson endorses. I just could not take him seriously.

  • Marcelino Gerena New 31st Ward Resident

Hey Sighryn....I just saw Rahm on Chicago Tonight and he seems to care. His 10% forced Rahm into a runoff. That was Wison's goal. Now he can reap the benefits of his $1 mil investment. Follow the money and you will find Rahm.

Late night license

I hear the owners of the new bar (owners of owl) are going to be seeking a 5am license. Any thoughts on crime levels and general "trouble" after owl opened up? I think once that goes in it could open up some more business on that desolate block. Thoughts?

  • Kimberly P. 6-year Logan Square resident

I used to live near The Owl and during the summer it was pretty loud. I witnessed a few fights and kids damaging property but most of the noise came from harmless, young, over served patrons who haven't quite got the concept of "respect your neighbors and exit quietly." Sleeping with the windows open wasn't an option.

  • tom in bucktown on and off Chicagoan for 10 years

I'm betting we would see some of the vacants around the new "owl" would convert to new businesses. The downside would be noise after midnight. Since the blue line runs by every 20 minutes after midnight already I'm leaning toward signing.

Any issues with crime around the owl?

The point is: do you want an autocratic alderman unilaterally making decisions as to which businesses can or cannot open?

Walmart is horrible to employees, but then so is Target and nobody's complaining about that. If he really wants to effect change, he'd pass a city-wide ordinance against anti-gay employment practices, or raising the minimum wage to $15 instead of making people wait until 2019 for a meager $13. That's the way to do it, not ad hoc obstruction of individual businesses. If it's not OK in Ward 1, it's not OK anywhere in the city.

Moreno is all about hype. He finds a cause, hypes it to death, takes credit, and cashes in.

BTW, he helped open the pawn shops nobody wanted (except his donors) so if you'd like to talk about the effect that has on crime, let's go.

  • Loganparkcat...don't say I disagree about blocking the Walmart. Was just pointing that for the person who brought up Walmart. You won't find me in a Walmart or Dollar Stores, both of which seem to line their shelves with poor-produced products from China.

3100 Block of Belden and Lyndale

Hello -
I am interested in connecting with neighbors in this area to become more cooperative. It's been really difficult the last 3 years to drive down the alley, because people don't clean their area and many that do, place all of the snow in the middle of the alley. Would love to form an understanding so our entire alley is clean, like other cooperative blocks. Would also like to connect for more block parties and community-based partnerships.

Car broken into while parked on Palmer Blvd

My car was broken into sometime between today and Wednesday night. No windows were broken so either it was jimmied or the door was unlocked. Everything from all the compartments was turned out onto the floor. Two CD cases of CDs were taken, all my change (about $3.00 in pennies) and car phone charger and ipod adapter. No huge losses. I expect it was someone walking down the street trying door handles. Perhaps the fact that the snow wasn't cleared off my car for a day made it look like I was away? It was parked right in front of my apartment, on Palmer Blvd near Sacramento.

  • Thanks Jeff, I don't think it could be avoided, though now I'll look for a person with a staff!

I think the take away is to not leave things in my car. I remember now I had a plastic bag of trash and recycling on the passenger seat. Even if I know it's not worth anything, I need to make sure my car looks boring to someone who looks in.

  • C. M. D. Avondale Triangle resident

I has someone break three of my windows to get 75 cents and a screwdriver - sometimes they'll break into your car for the barest possibility of a chance there's something worth money there.

Election

What does it say about a mayor who spends millions against a field of candidates who have never run for Mayor and he gets 1000 less votes than his 1st election and almost set a record for lowest turnout ever. Maybe if there was a candidate named Apathetic he/she would have won.

Meegan and Mell both have enough $$ to file for a recount, which has to be done by Tuesday (per Aldertrack). And as long as the ballot is postmarked by Feb 23, any absentee ballots arriving at the Board of Elections by March 10 count as valid votes (over 500 absentee ballots were requested, leaving just over 200 either not in or unmailed) - plus there's 60 provisional ballots that have to be verified and if those check out, those will add to the total. With a race this close, I'm sure each vote is going to be hand counted and scrutinized - regular, absentee, and provisional.

This race is still a long way from over.

Given you have the license plate I hope your friend made a police report. If so, I live in the building on that corner and our landlord has security cameras filming down both streets. This afternoon I was approached by two men in their late 20s that seemed a bit sketchy in a black dodge minivan that said they wanted to fix a dent that was in my car. I was in my car and they were in theirs. I said no thank you and they persisted to hound me saying they would and could do it right now, on the spot if I just gave them 20 dollars. At this point they were harassing me and seemed mad that I wouldnt pay 20$ to have a dent fixed. They were both very persistent and aggressive in nature. I decided to take a photo of them after they pulled away to give details on the plate to 311. At this point they reversed and rammed their car into mine hard and got out of their car. I honked and made a scene and they got back into the car and drove off. I feel like they were probably trying to rob me or steal my car. I went to the police station and they couldn't do anything since there was minimal damage to my car and I wasn't hurt, physically. The license plate was an expired temporary plate registered to a woman from the suburbs. I just want people to be aware of these guys. They seemed hard up,irrational and violent. It seemed like they had this scam down and it wasn't their first attempt. I'm glad people were around and it didn't escalate into anything worse. It was definitely a scary situation.

  • I understand not chasing the thief but the security guard could have at least assisted the lady -- see if she was hurt, take her inside, help her call the real police -- they should be trained to not just stand there and look puzzled.
