New to the area, just saying hi.

Hi, I moved here in Sept. I'm 28. I'm shy so I thought this would be a good way to introduce myself. Unsure what else to say so I'll leave it at this and wish you all a wonderful Wednesday.

  • Welcome to the area! Hope you're liking it so far. Btw, the brown sack is closing for good tomorrow. 😞 I agree it's amazing and definitely worth a try to check it out when you still have a chance. I recommend the Blast sandwich (the danny way, if you like a little kick of spice).

  • Welcome to the neighborhood!

Trails & food - Starved Rock

I am planning a day trip to Starved rock this Saturday and wondered what trail to take. I'm looking for something around 4 miles roundtrip, wonderful canyons, but great lookout points as well. Also, I am looking for a great spot to eat around that area, which is quaint and local. Thanks!

  • There's a great sandwich and ice cream shop in town outside of the park. I don't recall the name. I hope it's still there. The lodge inside the park also has good food.

  • I agree with Poppyboy, the lodge is definitely worth visiting. They have a nice patio with a great view of the Illinois River. Also, I don't know the specific shop he mentions, but I believe the town is Utica (you have to pass through it when you get off the...

I agree with Poppyboy, the lodge is definitely worth visiting. They have a nice patio with a great view of the Illinois River. Also, I don't know the specific shop he mentions, but I believe the town is Utica (you have to pass through it when you get off the highway - can't miss it). It has a fair amount of antique shops, etc. Worth a pit stop if you have time.

Regarding the trails, the loops are well marked at the trail head. I don't think you will have any trouble figuring out a 4 mile loop that includes visiting a canyon. Lastly, depending on where you hike, there are some great spots near the river for eagle watching (they next in an island on the river near the electric dam).

    Have fun!

A neighborly opinion

Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. Just wanted to see if those of you with experience dealing with neighbor/pet issues can offer some advice. My downstairs neighbors are young guys who moved in earlier this year. They have a cat and said that they are now letting their cat (who was never an outdoor cat before) go outside by himself. While I personally don't agree with keeping cats outdoors in the city and would never let my own kitty out, it's not my cat and therefore not really my choice.

The issue I'm having is that this cat seems to not be too content about its new situation, especially with the weather being what it is, and slips into the building every chance he gets. He's spent several nights in another neighbor's apartment who felt bad for him and I have let him briefly into mine (after he followed me inside). He and my kitty didn't get along so out he went.
This morning he was meowing outside my door in the back stairway (probably got in while I was going in and out doing laundry yesterday).

So I guess I'm not sure which side of the intervention line this falls. Do I secretly find this cat a nice home with more doting owners, do I ignore the situation? Just want to get some objective opinions :)

  • i did give my neighbor a flyer for a free treehouse fix and talk to her about getting her cat fixed. i didn't tell her that said cat was driving my cats crazy by coming in my yard...her kids had told me it was their cat and that she had just had kittens(!) but for whatever reason, cat has not been around.

  • @loganparkcat oooooh no, your neighbor's cat isn't spayed? poop. Where are you located? PM me.

Big transit oriented development planned near California Blue Line Stop

From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. Milwaukee Avenue. This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

  • Interesting to note Logan Square's population: 114,174 in 1930. 73,595 in 2010. I think we've got room for 253 more people!

Thanks Chandler. Phew I'm so relieved that they're not closing forever. I hope Brown Sack 2.0 is just as good as or better than before. I'll be upset if they get the Marble treatment which was fine as it was but new owners claimed it would have better food, nicer cocktails, etc. So far it has only managed to have worse everything and higher prices. And for reasons I can't comprehend you have to go up to the bar yourself to order something. I guess the higher prices don't include pay for waitresses, but I digress...

With all the empty storefronts we have in Logan Square, (like most on Fullerton west of Kimball) it's a shame that a new place can't open in one of these empty storefronts rather than displace a working business. I know the woman who owns the building where the Brown Sack is located. She said earlier in the year she was moving, so maybe she sold her home & the building. I live close to the Sack & remember the building was a complete dump - they spent so much sweat equity to get it into shape.

Time to plant parkway trees

Fall is the best time to plant trees. Home Depot on Elston has all their trees half price. I picked up a 12 foot red maple shade tree and they only charged me $8 so that might have been 75% off. The lady working the garden center said this is the time Home Depot needs to get rid of their tree stock. Don't mean to sound like an ad for Home Depot but I didn't go there to buy a tree but ended up with one. The root balls are small so digging a hole for it should be simple. No need to deal with the city either.

  • Don't forget "right tree, right place!" A tree planted in the wrong area for the type of tree species could have bad consequences for the tree's life and the surrounding area. That being said, we can never have enough trees and this seems like a great deal!

The contractor's site was extremely informative, eco-friendly, providing authentic repairs/replacements that meet qualifications for historic districts.

The Tile App (which we've discussed for lost pets) is shipping

On the recommendation of one of the eb folks, I ordered these tiles....the theory being they can be used to track pets (if enough people have the smartphone app) kind of doing what we do here when someone loses an animal. eager to try it out and see if it works. just got an email that my pre-ordered tag are preparing to ship. will let you know if it will (or could) work on animals...if not, i'll just use it for my keys, glasses, or ventra hanger tag that i constantly lose anyway.

Did you lose a young cat, black with white markings?

There is a little lost kitty in the courtyard of my building. A neighbor is attempting to get him/her inside for the night. Is anyone missing a young black cat with some white marks? It is lost in the area east of Kimball and south of Milwaukee. I didn't want to take a picture because it might have scared her away. Looked clean and timid, like someone's pet. If you've lost your little one and the description fits, please post a pic and I'll let you know if it looks like the same cat.

My then-neighbors actually had theirs checked this year or last, I can't remember which. They have them alot. It only took them a few minutes to walk over to the alderman's office to get the permit. Although, I do remember them telling me after the first time how surprised they were at how rude the staff was there. The staff made a point of indicating the person that would check for it and the guy said something kind of rude/threatening to them -- as threatening as garage sale permits can get, I suppose. But, that's Rey Colon's office. Hopefully, you don't have to deal with them.

  • Many thanks for all your help. We were able get our permit today--same day service! I was a skeptic on the quick turnaround suggested in these comments. I am glad I was proved wrong.

So! Garage sale. This Saturday near the corner of Leavitt and Charleston. See you there?

El Stops with Only One Exit?

Recent renovations to the California blue line stop have made it painfully clear that the CTA never intended to improve the actual functionality of the station. I cannot think of another north side blue line stop that does, but maybe my memory isn't so good. Are there red line stops with only one entrance / exit?

If any of us want to petition the CTA about this at some point in future, it'd be useful to recognize how rare this phenomena is.

  • Alya A. Bucktown to Logan

The station at Roosevelt also connects three lines, which only happens one other place outside the loop that I can think of.

As was said above, short of demolishing buildings/spending millions of capital the CTA does not have, unfortunately making each station accessible is just not in the cards right now.

Seriously though, I have been acquainted with the Roosevelt stop since 1985. They build a nice tunnel to connect the subway and the elevated lines, but the main entrance is a disaster, and the actual subway platform is pretty much unchanged (I guess the train tracker info is nice, but that is pretty standard at the big stops).

Belmont connects three lines as well, and I'd argue the entrance is *far* more welcoming and open/easy to navigate during to rush hour than it was before. The platform seems indistinguishable from the Roosevelt elevated platform.

Long-term inpatient care used to be the ideal, but budget cuts have slashed that ideal. Given the current reality, the only solution I can think of is to keep prodding the chronically homeless / mentally ill into seeking treatment (or ending up in jail, where the conditions are arguably better than being under the viaduct at Fullerton). When they set up "camp" somewhere, get the cops to nudge them out. And keep doing it.

Mozzarella sticks??

been dying for some crispy, gooey mozzarella sticks in Logan square. Any suggestions?? Those soggy balls at boiler room don't count, and I haven't seen them on any menus nearby- I gotta be missing something!

It's been years since I've been to Leona's but they use to have huge sticks! Fried cheese curds are Delish at Small Bar on Wellington (and Albany?)

Looking for foster home for kittens

I have 3 friendly kittens in my yard. Looking for someone to house them and socialize them while we look for a home for them. I'm full up on cats already or I would take them in. They appear to be about 3 months old. They are very playful and seem healthy.

My Husband, Daughter and I took a walk the other day and found a house we would like to purchase on the 1700 block of Drake, about 6 blocks form our current home on the North side of Armitage. Please let me know what your thoughts are in that particular block and the area in general. I have lived in Logan, Armitage/Kedzie area since 2000 but, before making a purchase, we would like to hear more about the general feeling of the area, especially now that we have a young child. Kids selling Tribune subscriptions

Does anyone else have kids coming to their house every other week trying to sell subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune? It's almost always after 7 o'clock at night and always the same thing: it's for school and when you tell them you don't want the subscription they ask for a donation. Does anyone give money to people at their door? Kind of annoyed by it.

She also figured out the antique turn doorbell that baffled my ups driver.

This problem is caused by the employer Youth Workforce on Fullerton(at Western). They saturate Logan Square with young people hocking the paper. I get them twice a month. I quickly explain that I get these requests twice a month and I won't be subscribing. When they are persistent and sometimes aggressive I let them know I think their employer is scamming them by sending them in territory so overrun with requests that the likelihood of a sale is very low.
Two responses that young people seem to understand.
"What if I came to you twice a month and asked you buy something you already had (ie cell phone)? would you buy one every two weeks?"
"What is your address?" WHY " I would like to be able to come by your home and request a DONATION when I am running low on funds."

I have become so annoyed over the 7+ years living here that I have called the Tribune to complain twice. This falls on deaf ears. They should not be affiliated with Youth Workforce.
