Looking to meet new mom's!

Hello! I am a new mom and will be staying at home with my baby through next August. I would love to meet a couple other new moms for daytime socializing, learning how to get out of the house, sharing stories and ideas, meeting for short walks, etc...I joined Meet Up, but thought I might give this a try, too. Feel free to message me if you are interested in getting together one day in the coming weeks, even just for an hour. Thanks!

  • On our way out my 3yr old had a potty accident in her carseat...so i have to pass on today. I got a good mess to clean up.
    Anyone up for meeting tomorrow?

  • I'm so sad we're going to have to pass today too, Ronan has been in a foul mood and fussy all day... Think it's the teething, poor thing :(

antique chandelier free to a good home

I'm giving away this antique chandelier if any neighbors would like it. It's got CFL bulbs in it currently. It's been in my garage for a few months now and needs a good dusting. It works great, though, and would look nice in the right dining room. Message me through the site if you'd like to come and pick it up. See attached photo. Thanks.

  • Seth! I just saw you pop up on a recent thread and I couldn't email you through your profile but I wanted to contact you, hence, resurrecting this ancient thread. I told you I'd give you an update on the chandelier adoption and then promptly misplaced your number. The chandelier cleaned up beautifully and works like a charm just as you said it would. It has been very happy in its new home. Thank you so much for your generosity!

Thanks for the update. I'm very glad to hear that the chandelier worked out for you. :-)

Hey guys, I build customer furniture and lighting fixtures if anyone is interested. Trying to get my name out there. Everything is hand built! Here's a floor lamp I finished over the weekend.

  • I've been on the market for a new light fixture for our dining room. Do you have photos of hanging pendant type fixtures you've made?

  • Hey the crumbiest, I can email you some more pics tonight. Can you shoot me an email at cmacemm@gmail.com?

Studios and One Bedrooms in Logan?

I am looking to move to a new apartment sometime in October, and I know it is a long shot to find an affordable studio or one bedroom in Chicago, let alone in Logan Square, but if anyone has any leads (management companies, units, specific apartments) that would be so lovely!

I really want to stay in this neighborhood, but miss living in a tiny little studio.

  • i had luck finding a one-bedroom for $800 (with central air!) over by north and kedzie. i've noticed the building across from me has rental flyers out - (NW corner pierce/kedzie) and is run by m. fischman & co.

it's a good corner for mass transit - the north ave. bus gets you down to blue line in about 10 minutes.

i looked all over logan via craigslist and chicago apartment finders and this was the clear winner of the handful of places i saw. i think chicago apartment finders just opened an office in bucktown as well. that's how i found my place. definitely go for a walk around the neighborhood, but CAF might be worth a few hours of your time. it's free!

  • On CL I saw studio apts renting for $865 ALL utilities included Kimball/Diversey/Millwaukee

This is why i firmly believe politics and private business needs to remain separate. I have been following this situation closely. As a longtime resident I wasn't overly thrilled a bar was replacing provenance. We need locally sourced retail in our neighborhood, as this helps grow the core of what we are all about. I have shopped and supported provenance for over 6 years and was very upset they were leaving their space. I attended a community meeting a few weeks back and was completely surprised by what I heard. Most importantly, these were 3 local residents I.e. small business owners. They planned to keep a retail component w/ their business model, adding produce also & plans to expand to a full on wine/packaged goods & retail component in the building. This wasn't just a bar as what I read on here and provenances FB page. I was very disappointed to find out though that provenance, who started this campaign to stay in the spot via reaching out to the alderman, is now playing dirty pool.

The owners of provenance have quietly spread the word they may be staying. It appears they are threatening to remain in the space unless they are compensated by the building owner in an effort to block the new owners from buying the building. Was this the advice of the alderman interactions? To play the role of poor me then threaten to squat to block a sell of the building? Did the building owner or new owner do something illegal here by giving them 60 days notice to vacate after not agreeing to extend their lease per Provenances FB page? If this is true, Shame on you Provenance for rallying support of our neighborhood, then trying to extort payment because apparently it's only your right to do business in the space.

Signed,
a very disappointed FORMER customer.

  • The Lincoln Square shop IS NOT closing. For goodness sake, they're raffling off a gift certificate to that shop for people who brought in food for Common Pantry. And if they were going to "squat" in that space, why is Provenance selling off fixtures? Hard to put stuff on shelves...

Enough of this bad mouthing of what's been a good store & an asset to the community. Enough of all the nasty talk about them on here. It seems since Every Block returned it's been taken over by trolls who seem to want to stir up the hate.

Still doesn't answer some of the other concerns above (pressure/dirty pool to prevent new business) but seems if true or false, that ship has sailed. I guess the take-away is that a great shop is leaving our neighborhood. Hopefully the new place will get up and running quickly and we can all enjoy it.

When I first moved to Chicago, I promised myself to take a self-defense course. Not just any course, but one that made me feel as if I could REALLY defend myself.

IMPACT Chicago teaches self-defense for women. The most interesting part of this is that women are strong in their lower body. That is the focus of this training. The other piece is that you are training when in a frightened state - helps with muscle memory and reaction times.

This is just a personal reference and I'm sure that people will post negative comments. I'm proud that I took control of my safety and will never feel like a victim while walking around our neighborhoods.

If you want more information, see their website. http://www.impactchicago.org/

They have upcoming classes and can even offer a payment plan to help with the cost.

This program changed my life - I hope others see the benefit as well.

The house is not abandoned and it is not a story of little old grandma. I see twenty-somethings coming in and out of there all the time.

I know some neighbors have already explained the problem to them to no avail they just let it grow au naturale.

Anybody have experience getting able bodied neighbors to do the right (and lawful) thing?

Lawndale/Fullerton Melee

Anybody have any insight into the dust up near Fullerton and Lawndale last night around 11:45 p.m. or so? There's been an uptick in rival tagging in the alley near there, and there was some sort of scuffle; though I couldn't quite see what was going on, I heard it, and saw maybe four squad cars hit the scene and bust it up. Thanks.

St. Hedwig Church Restoration photo

Took a shot from a good angle showing scaffolding on the restoration of St. Hedwig's west bell tower. That's a lot of scaffolding and it has survived some pretty high winds this season. The new roof looks nice. That scaffolding will all be gone by the end of summer.

  • I originally posted this (7/21) because I have a fetish for a well engineered set of scaffolding and we probably won't see scaffolding around these bell towers for another 50 - 100 years so it's like taking a picture of a comet. The scaffolding is down and the roof is done. Here's a what the completed roof looks like from the same angle but in sunset light.

Bike theft

On august 31 between 10pm and midnight somebody walked back into my friends yard around north ave and wood st and walked out with my bike that should have been locked up but wasn't. It was not visible from the street or alley so someone is definitely intentionally walking through backyards to find things to steal. I doubt it will surface but it is a blue schwinn with heavily padded high seat, black water bottle holder, rear rack with an orange and black lock, hand grips coming apart, kickstand.

I had to 'make and take' a red wiggler bin to get full credit for Master Composter degree and the winter had them 'especially happy' in the basement so I have two huge bins ready to share. You need a plastic tub with lid that has 1/4 inch holes punched in top for air and then we tear up newspaper, throw in a little garden dirt, wet so it is like a 'rung out sponge', and put in the worms. They eat 'left over' lettuce, coffee grounds, etc (except onions, peppers, citrus). Easy VERY EASY to care for in basement or garage (some people keep them under the sink..no smell)
This is the best 'soil' you will find and excellent for seedlings. You separate the worms from the 'soil' (I can tell you how) and use the soil in your garden, house plants, etc. YOU MUST NOT put the worms in composters or soil outside as they are not native and they eat constantly and will eat all the surface plants.
If you are interested, please let me know and it will be another reason for spring to come quickly!@

Each time I call, I talk to a receptionist and then I am transferred to a voice mail where I leave a message and never get a return call. The last time I called I told the receptionist that I had left several messages, so she said she would give the right person my contact information, and I still never heard back. I was calling about simple things such as: recycling for our block and what can be done about all the solicitation material that is left on our front steps and gates. I even called to try and make an appointment with the Alderman to discuss items in person since I work until 5:30 and cannot make it to his Monday community meetings by 6pm, but did not get a call back. His website says “An operator will take your contact information and record your issues and concerns. Then you will be referred to the proper staff or receive a call back.” But this is not true. Has anyone had any luck with Alderman Maldonado’s office?

It should not require a visit to get something done. I've called and emailed 4 times in the past 2 months weeks to get a sewer fixed that overflows every time it rains, even minimally, and blocks a lane of traffic. I've had 3 tickets closed by 311 with no response just in the last two months. I've been trying to get this fixed since 2011. It should not be this hard.

  • Agreed...can you go directly to the city on this? Can you present a 'log' of all your attempts...even a letter (certified so you know he got it) to the mayor's office? Good luck..very frustrating when all 'we' are asking for are the 'basics...

    @Tracy -

    1) I have no context into your situation so I'm not making any judgements. It's also your right to decry the CACC (which, by the way, isn't a "business" - it's a government entity).

    2) Rescues, including PAWS, do not just blindly take in animals and tell the individual(s) releasing those animals that they are taking them. PAWS, like the CACC, is very transparent, and will tell you immediately where the animal will be placed. Sometimes that's with them, but often times, you are correct - they often go to the CACC (PAWS is usually close to full at all times, as that's the entire point of their organization). However there is no conspiracy to "hide" this - it is in fact spelled out clearly when releasing an animal to them.

    3) There is no issue with you stating what is already transparent information, but you clearly have an ax to grind with the CACC. You may consider the CACC "nasty", but editorializing an organization that's both needed in the city (by the population as well as animal rescues) and actively working towards animal welfare is doing no one any favors with your narrow viewpoint. You may have had an unfortunate situation with the CACC, but it's also unfair to paint the org as universally reviled because of it (hence my comments).

    4) I'm not going to have a discussion on CACC politics and operations and further derail this thread.

If that dog's owners cannot be found (and as @rogerparker says, owners are told to check the CACC first and foremost) and she ends up at the CACC, I can guarantee you that as long as she's not horribly reactive to anyone who approaches her that dog will stay there MAYBE a month (more like two weeks at most). Dogs like that have no problem finding homes and are snapped up instantly at the CACC.

  • Hopefully this little one finds her home! If not if you need someone to take her in or if she will be able to foster/adopt please let me know. I am looking for a beagle and a female at that. I have had no luck so far but I have...
