Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. I know there are used mattress stores but…? can't seem to find much info on getting rid of them, only buying them. It's a decent quality mattress, about 14 years old, cats and dogs in home. Suggestions?

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

https://www.flickr.com/photos/bartshore/16915159066/

  • i doubt the signs are going to change the minds of anyone inconsiderate enough to leave piles of dog *$%# lying around. basically just more garbage to deal with when i'm out picking up this week's pile of flaming hot bags :/

  • Bart... Can u send ur picture to the local news so they can do a story about it? While they r gathering information, they may find the person who doesn't pick up after themselves.

Two Towers/Max Gerber Development 2nd Community Meeting

The 2nd Community Meeting for the old Max Gerber Project (The Two Towers), at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave, will be Monday, March 30th, at the Haas Park Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m .

The last meeting was packed and was originally proposed to add 253 rental units in the area near the California L station - that's on top of 52 now permitted at 2340 N. California and 120 planned to open in Spring 2016 at 2211 N. Milwaukee.

  • Just glanced at the headline...haven't had a chance to peruse it yet:
    http://chi.streetsblog.org/2014/01/29/mapped-where-most-chicagoans-dont-own-cars/

  • Took a spin through that interactive map. Not sure if that's what you were looking for Carter...but pretty interesting local data about car ownership and transit usage. Even without properties marketed as TOD, the strip right near the proposed development shows 30-35% of homes have no cars. Right across California 40-45% have no cars. If you look in areas up north that have more TOD type buildings (zero parking, studios, etc.)...you see many areas with over 50% of households not having a car. The real compelling data for me would be the percentage of those in the first property truly marketed as a TOD (on Division) without cars. Anecdotally, it sounds like few if any have cars based on informal surveys of renters...but I'd love to see hard data. Interesting stuff to be sure.

Business labor-cost increases offset by increase in prices. Oakland, restaurants are raising prices by 20%, SF Chronicle “some of the city’s top restaurateurs fear they will lose customers to higher prices.” are eliminating tips as they raise prices.
this change in compensation practices has reduced the take-home pay for some of the employees it was supposed to help: Oakland restaurant Homestead, servers are taking “a substantial pay cut,” earning a flat wage of $18 to $24 an hour, no tips instead of the $35 to $55 an hour they were earning when tips were included.

So this won't be have 'SRO' /single room occupancy zoning. And to me the units are not very MICRO...or cheep. (I think the article might be mixing up the 1000sqft 2 bedroom with the 1500sqft 1 bedroom).

To me this seems like a good fit for a busy corner right by the El. This should help spread the revitalization of Milwaukee Ave further northwest.

  • Yeah there is a huge difference between having the cash and actually affording those apartments. I LOL'd at the part in the article where they suggested these were for the younger millennials... Was I the only one who didn't graduate college debt free with a $60k a year job right off the bat? I'm over 30 and couldn't afford one of these studios. Good grief. I guess I'll show myself out, Logan.

  • Alan.. You're probably wrong.

Personally, I would NEVER pay anything close to that. I mean, my condo is half that and 1.5x the size (lol it's small) of that. But hey, it's not for everyone. Would you rather have this person rent one of these new ones and spend there cash here or take up some of the rental stock that's already dwindling as that's their only option in the area and force someone out of a cheaper apt?

Mulch by the truck load

Are there any places nearby that sell mulch by the truck load? Or is there a way to rent a truck (Home Depot) and go get a truckload of mulch? Our building has a mulch bed that runs the entire parkway of a half block. We've had the outfit that mows our tiny yards install and refill it in the past, but wouldn't mind doing it myself if the economics are right. And I've looked into going to Home Depot, or something similar, and buying by the bag and that did not seem like a reasonable option.

Scoby inquiry

I've recently attended a kombucha brewing class, and I'm interested in starting home brewing. However, I'm in need of the scoby. Dill is currently not selling them and had no suggestions as to where I could find one. Any ideas? Or does anyone have a baby they would share with me? Thank you!

  • I've got some! Happy to share. Email me, elsbeth cool at gmail dot com.

  • If you still need one, I can split mine too. The first time I started brewing I used one of the kits from Dill Pickle with very poor results. It's much better to start with a gifted SCOBY from an established brew. Let me know if you're interested.

The first robbery occurred on March 14 around 10:30 p.m., in the 3000 block of West Schubert Avenue. On Monday, another person was robbed around 12:25 a.m. on the same block. About 15 minutes later, another person was robbed in the 2900 block of West Schubert Avenue, police said.

According to police, the suspect is between 18 and 30 years old, stands around 5-foot-11 and weighs about 165 pounds.

In one of the incidents, the man was wearing a dark sweatshirt with pink lettering of the phrase "We Trippy Mane," blue jeans, beige boots and earrings in both ears, police said.

My hubby and I were married at Promontory Point, which is a Chicago Park District building right along Lake Michigan. Cheap rental, and we brought in our own booze and catering and music. Beautiful place. Indoor seating with huge wall of glass doors that open facing the Lake and a nice stone patio outdoors. One thing though: Because it's a park building, random people can come through to use the bathrooms, so you need to keep that in mind :) It's been awhile, so just check out current rules/regs on the Chicago Park District Website. http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/parks/Burnham-Park/

Found a young male grey tabby on our porch this morning. Collar but no tags. Very friendly, but seemed scared to be outside. We are keeping him safe inside.

  • Just this morning, I brought a friendly stray, which had been beat to a bloody pulp, possibly by a dog or another cat, into the Tree House clinic. They're transferring him to an ER. Make no mistake, any outdoor cat, feral or someone's pet, can suffer an excruciating plight.

  • time and again, it's posters that work...put on the corner lamp posts and in neighbors' doors. the owner -- or someone who recognizes the cat and knows who it belongs to -- may contact you. a lot of older pet owners are not looking online...

AT&T Internet Issues

The pipe is allowing some enterprising soul to dispose of waste water without tapping into the city sewer. They are basically dumping their sewage into the alley, which is why there are constantly filthy puddles of water all the way down the east end of that alley, no matter how dry the weather.

If you happen to live at a property that backs up against that alley, please call 311 to report these clowns. I've already reported them, but generally the more complaints the city receives, the faster the issue will be resolved.

Hello All, just a warning... I had ALL of my tires and rims stolen off of my Honda Fit early Sunday morning. It had to have happened after 1am. It happened near 2828 W Belden. I didn't have locking nuts but from what I have been reading it doesn't sound like they would have helped. Keep an eye on your cars folks! I cannot believe this happened 2 block away from the police department. They're doing a great job of patrolling the neighborhood... Not! I am super paranoid that this will happen again. Has this happened to anyone and were you targeted multiple times?

They've arrested a number of car, tire, and catalytic converter thieves. One just a few blocks west of me, they were able to nab the guy because he was in the middle of a theft when the cops happened to stop there.Infuriating and frustrating as it is, this is a misdemeanor crime. Arrestees are given community service and a fine. That's if the prosecution can get the victim to testify, which is often a problem of the thieves have gang connections, and it all hinges on the police happening to be at the right car at the right time.

This doesn't just happen in our district - I just sent an email to alderman Mell's chief of staff asking that she co-sponsor an ordinance the the alderman from the 12th district is promoting. It would make it illegal for these "recycling" plants to buy catalytic converters. I'd encourage others too look up the proposed ordinance and ask your alderman to support it.
I've lived in my house here 15 years. The "recycling" plant gets run out of Bucktown, opens up on Campbell, and suddenly grills are getting stolen, bikes disappearing, there's not a downspout on any house for blocks because they've all been stolen. Now it's catalytic converters - and I assume they're selling the tires to some kind of used tire dealer. As long as it's easy for them to sell what they've stolen, the thefts will not stop.

  • Oh no! We also had our tires stolen off of our Honda Civic last month. There have been multiple catalytic converter thefts on our block.

It looks like this is the ordinance, introduced last week:

After being shot in the neck, the man continued driving and made his way on the the Southbound Kennedy Expressway in the Avondale neighborhood where he pulled over. He managed to get a cell phone from another person and paramedics were called, said police.

The man, who is a known gang member, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital where his condition had stabilized. The on ramp near Sacramento Avenue was briefly closed, said Illinois State Police officials. . . . . . . .

Ugh. Just great. Stupid gang shootings. It's bad enough that they shoot each other senselessly but when they endanger others?! Shooting someone when they are driving?! UGH.

Attempted tire robbery

Someone tried to steal the tires off our Toyota 4Runner sometime between yesterday and this afternoon at 3pm. They were unsuccessful but in the process either rammed the driver side rear door with their car or some object that caused so much damage that the door will most likely have to be replaced. Also, some paneling is missing. Lucikly AAA was able to help put the tire back on and the damage is only cosmetic. We live on Lyndale between California and Sacramento. Just wanted to let everyone know to be alert!

Lost keys

Two keys missing, one has a Chicago Whitesox logo on it. Last seen in Logan Square. Can you please let me know if you find them?

Zoning, Housing and Population Decline

Interesting thoughts from Crain's on population decline in neighborhoods like LP, LS and WP relative to the south and west sides. Includes some good demog maps.

Thanks for posting this. Interesting article for sure. As John points out though, this phenomena is largely due to the ever increasing gap between the wealthy and what is left of the middle class.

Good post & good follow up by Carter. Pro-density people like to talk about how many more people lived in Logan Square in the past. Blindly citing the population decline, ignores the fact that there was a lot of slum level housing, and that we aren't returning to the large families of the 1950s & 60s.

Density is not always a good thing. The CHA high-rises had density, but no one would argue that it was good for anyone. The City should have areas of lower density that appeal to families who want a yard for the kids to play in.

The observation that we are creating economic enclaves is spot on. That's happening in the suburbs too, though. Some 'burbs have become millionaires' clubs, while others are being overwhelmed with new residents living below the poverty line. "Out of sight, out of mind", is still the default attitude towards low income housing.

As for the economics, I suspect that is even more complicated. Lincoln Park doesn't lack for luxury retail shops. The smaller family units that replaced the people there in the 60s & 70s, may have equal or greater aggregate purchasing power. This is an issue that deserves more attention!

Garbage along the 3800 block of W Wabansia

Yesterday I was walking down the 3800 block of W Wabansia between Hamlin and Avers when I witnessed something that stopped me in my tracks.
First of all that whole block on the north side of that street always looks like a garbage pit. Who is responsible for keeping up with the weeding, garbage, and open potholes for that stretch? If this is city property couldn’t cleaning this up be part of someone’s community service?

Ok anyway as I was walking by, a driver of a brown van pulled over to the side of the road, tossed out a plastic grocery bag full of garbage, old styrofoam containers, plastic soda bottles, and such. Then quickly drove away.
Couldn't make out the plates, but the words on the side of the van that I could see said “New Life Community Church Chicago” in white letters. Isn’t that special? Nice message they are sending. NLCC doing good things for the neighborhood! Excellent job for being a part of the problem and not the solution.
Gross to see a representative of a church acting so lazy, entitled and narcissistic.

End of rant.
Give a hoot, don't pollute!

Nick that was fun! I moved to EGP 20 years ago. Al Sanchez sent 40 garbage trucks to clean out my alley which looked very much like the Napal photos. 4 years ago the 28th ward had the most tonnage of fly dumping than any other ward.

Someplaces in Chicago are comparable to disgusting 3rd world disasters.

We all just need to do our part to clean up the city. Some means clean up waste through exposing fraud and corruption.

Thanks for the world view, perspective and context.

  • Exactly, we are not a 3rd world country. Let us all do our part and keep our city clean...no excuses!
