Good Afternoon Partners,

In an effort to ensure that all of our youth are college and career ready, CPS has launched an initiative to help out-of-school high school students re-enroll in school. To that end, we opened 3 Student Outreach And Re-Engagement Centers (SOAR Centers). The SOAR Centers are located in Roseland, Little Village and Garfield Park.

We will be holding an open house to provide more detail regarding the new SOAR Centers on Thursday July 24, 2014 at the JLM Center at 2622 W. Jackson, Chicago, IL 60612 at 9 a.m.

You can make a referral to the SOAR Center by simply sending us an email at SOAR@CPS.EDU. We will reach out to the student as soon as possible and offer the following services:

· Develop a re-enrollment plan and a graduation plan for each student.
· Assist the student with selecting and enrolling in a school that best fits his or her needs.
· Assist students with developing strategies to overcome issues that have kept them from succeeding in school.
· Develop an individual success plan that maps out academic, behavior and attendance goals for each student.
· Provide online credit recovery for students for whom we are unable to provide immediate school placement.
· Provide opportunities for students to earn service learning hours.

Please join us on Thursday July 24, 2014 for more information. If you are able to attend, please RSVP to ssmith114@cps.edu. If you have any questions regarding the SOAR Centers or would like to receive SOAR marketing materials, please call Sean Smith the SOAR Manager at (773)710-7329.

People's Gas shut off my gas

So I had a PG guy come out to do an inspection - he identifies a leak, another guy comes out and shuts off the gas. Says have a contractor open up your wall and a plumber fix the leak and call us when it's all done. WTF? Who do I call? I have no way to cook or dry our laundry :( And People's Gas won't give us any names of companies that could help.

Jose's Frozen Yogurt!

New frozen yogurt store on 4032 N. Milwaukee just north of Irving Park. I stumbled on it and was surprised at the new stores opening on Milwaukee. A nice spa called Luxe Blue and this frozen yogurt store where you pay by the weight and add-ons. I'm glad to see more stores like these in 6 corners! Support our local businesses - can't wait for the Chipotle to open.

"Illinois has been shown to be in the bottom half of the rankings in some of
the most prominent studies that rank states according to their business tax
climate. Although, some question whether the entire enterprise of
measuring an overall business tax climate for a state can be valid or useful,
below are some of Illinois’ rankings based on the most popular methods of
comparison:

1. State Business Tax Climate Index – 31st
2. Small Business Policy Index – 35th
3. State Competitiveness Report – 38th
4. Economic Outlook – 48th

 Illinois rankings in the area of business tax climate have fallen over the last
several years. Much of this falloff can be tied to increase in the personal
income tax rates (from 3% to 5%) and corporate income tax rates (from
4.8% to 7%), which became effective for tax year 2011."

Thuis Playlot - Lavergne/Lawrence Will you come?

Thuis Playlot @ 4759 N. Lavergne Ave. is being renovated. I'd love to take my kids there since it's so close to our house, but I am deathly afraid of crossing Lawrence at the Lavergne/Lawrence intersection. I honeslty think that the inability to safely cross the street is one of the major reasons this playlot is very underutilized. Anyone have any thoughts on what can be done?

Pop Up Table Space Available - Now you can rent a table for just one month

Attention local craft and food artisans! We have cleared out our center aisle to make room for our latest addition - pop up market space!! Now you can rent a table for a month, setup your goods, and we will sell them for you!

Table space is approximately 4' x 2' and there are three tables total. The table fee is $100 for the month. There is a sales commission fee of 10% + 3% to cover credit card transactions. The first open slot is August but you can move in as early as July 18th. At this time, we aren't accepting any jewelry.

This option is open to anyone currently selling on consignment or for any new artisans. The idea is to change the center aisle every month and give different artisans a chance to showcase their work.

In addition to the new table space, we also have one booth available for rent - this is for long term rental (versus the tables which are short term).

Please contact us for more info: market@localgoodschicago.com.

Teacher/Staff Wanted

We are Apogee Academy, a new concept in education opening this fall in Old Irving Park. We expand on the concept of the one-room school, with mixed ages from 5 - 18, but with today's activities, technology and information. What we're looking for is an individual open to the concept of alternative, self-directed education. Of course, experience with children in a full age-range is a plus, along with good organizational skills, marketing and promoting, and a positive approach. Please send your resume along with a paragraph about yourself to: apogeeacademy@gmail.com Hope to hear from you!

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

I was poking around your website, and I have a question. How will children from families not equipped to homeschool/unschool fair at your school (such as a single parent, with one or more jobs)?

  • The school could work quite well for such a family. Parents are welcome to stay during the school day if they wish (one of the things that makes our school unique) but they do not have to stay. They may drop off and pick up, and older students may get to school and go home on their own.

I am glad we finally have Common Core and NWEA MAP and other means to help us get better. However, we need to fulling understand and use these tools to reap the benefits. Obviously the parents and teachers must partner in providing differentiated instruction to each and every child. Daily reading (and vocabulary development, like with Worldy Wise), math practice (love to use IXL.com) and writing (working with story starter kits can be fun) are obvious tasks. Any experimentation/play with kits like Lego, Knex, National Geographic science kits, chess, art, music, theater, public speaking and debating will boost the creativity, critical thinking and communication skills. While mind is exercised by the above means, we certainly should not forget the sports to keep the jitters away, to stay healthy and to develop a cooperative play.

- Drywall repair

Thanks for your help!

We're a whole new idea in education! Apogee Academy is a brand new school for ages 5 - 18 opening this fall in Old Irving Park. How do we differ from other schools? Students at Apogee Academy are accepted, respected, empowered and challenged in a unique, mixed-age environment. They are provided with the time and opportunities both for the pursuit of their own passions, new ideas and experiences, as well as to be of service to others in the community. It's self-directed learning... Based on educator John Holt's premise that a child (or adult for that matter) have the innate ability to learn that for which they need and desire to be a part of the society in which they live. That means no compulsory curriculum, common-core subjects, standardized testing, grades or homework.

How then do the students really learn? By conversation, social interaction, play, reading, practice, exploring and service to others. Apogee students set their own goals, learn in their own way, and evaluate their own efforts. In other words, It's learning is for the sake of learning as opposed to grades, tests, etc. One's energy and commitment arises from those passions and interests that live within. Families who believe that learning and character develop best in an atmosphere of freedom, compassion and respect will be right at home here!

Doesn't that take all the work out of school? Definitely not. Apogee Academy is not the soft option. Students are challenged each day to make decisions both big and small. No one tells them what they must do, how they must do it or when they must do it. They won't be constantly entertained, distracted or occupied with a prescribed curriculum. An Apogee student must take ownership of his/her learning. That way It is real learning, real responsibility and it takes real direction.

Come to an Open House this summer and find out more! We promise you'll leave more knowledgeable about that unique journey for all of us called education.

  • What is the tuition like? I work nights and sleep most days so its hard to get to open houses.

  • Maggie,

Our tuition is $5900 for a full-time student with a 20% discount for additional children. We also offer part-time enrollment (roughly three days per week) for $4425 with the same 20% discount for additional children. We also offer financial aid for those parents who cannot afford the full tuition, and there is a discount for early enrollment and early payment. Please see our website at http://apogeeacademy.org for more details and to sign up for future announcements. Thanks for your interest.

Hi Marnie! We moved to this area about 3 years ago and I felt the same as you in terms of wanting to connect with other families. So, about 2 years ago my family started the Mayfair/Old Irving Meetup Group for families (I don't have a FB page.) I have since stepped down from organizing the group but other area moms have taken it over and it is still going strong. Not sure what the ages of your kiddos are but it is generally geared for families with children 5 and under, although any/all are welcome. Just request to join the group using this link: http://www.meetup.com//mayfairoldirvingparkparentsgroup/

There is a suggested donation of $5 or $10, I think, to help pay for the Meetup site subscription. We meet up at local parks, have playdates at people's homes, have Mom's Nights Out and just started a book club among our many events. Check it out and see if this sounds like something you want to join please do! Welcome!
