looking for two kittens

I am looking to adopt two kittens, does anyone know anyone who has a litter that is ready to go?

  • cleanest shelter i have ever visited. Volunteers and kind and treat the kittys and doggies with such love and care..

    http://wright-wayrescue.org/kitten-adoptions/

  • I really encourage adopting through a shelter or animal control. I once had to go to animal control in search of a missing pet and it profoundly changed my outlook on adoption and neutering. Animal control is not a place any animal should be.

Best Extracurricular Activities for Kids

We have found a local gem at our local park in Dunning Neighborhood, which is Culture and Arts--Woodworking Class. We highly recommend the offering to all, ages 6 and up. Teacher Joe has 20+ yrs. of working with wood and children. Recently, the projects included little race cars and bird homes. The process includes drawing the model, cutting the wood, putting it all together and painting. It is a practical hands-on learning for anyone.

Do you know of any other nearby quality children programs that should be considered?

  • Art Enrichment for both the Young and the Old at Brickton Art Center, Park Ridge

We love Brickton Art Center and faithfully attend their classes for several years now. They have amazing people and provide amazing results. Try them out and you will not look anywhere else for arts. http://www.bricktonartcenter.org/

  • Spanish Preschool (2.5 to 5-yrs-old) at Des Plaines Park District

If you are looking for a fun affordable Saturday morning Spanish Preschool, 2.5 hrs/day, I highly recommend the Des Plaines Park District Program. Seniora Meza puts a lot of effort to create a warm, colorful, entertaining and educational program. Each class has its own theme and the art projects are noteworthy. Dunning Read Conservation Area Advisory Council is Forming

Just learned about this opportunity to serve the community. See the link below. It sounds like a fine opportunity for the nature supporters, educators and parents to create, shape and/or influence the nature programming for their children and others in our "own" backyard. Is anyone thinking of joining in?

  • Does anyone have any feedback on this meeting? I came out having more questions than answers.

Found Kitten on 4900 Block of N. Kilpatrick

A very sweet and VERY chatty kitten has been coming around my house for the last few nights. She (or he) is really loving and very comfortable with people, after a brief "get to know you" stage. She's really thin and small, and I worry about her being out alone. She cries outside my door all night like she wants to come in. I'm really hoping I can find her home. Please let me know if you have any info!

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:

Senator Mulroe at senatorjohnmulroe@att.net;
Representative Martwick at repmartwick@gmail.com;
Alderman Sposato at info@aldermansposato.com; and
Alderman Cullerton at Timothy.Cullerton@cityofchicago.org.

  • Randy Stroller

I was not here but am told Daley nixt the arial pedways because it would lessen street traffic for storefronts. I am sort of with you though that cement rucks, cyclist and pedestrians do not mix well.

  • Thank you for the clarification.

    Thank you for the clarification.

Due to the speeding, accident prone traffic, including a recent car driving through Irving Park Cemetery's fence, we certainly would agree that the guardrails would be helpful. Alderman Cullerton mentioned them as an option to consider, after his personal tour of the area and of the broken cemetery's rusted fence, which got "patched" up recently. We just don't know where the funding would come to cover them? We can't get the sidewalks replaced since late 1960's, let alone get the guardrails.

Last fall, the city started putting gravel on the mud that you see in the picture above with more added this summer. This thick layer of gravel hinders biking and strolling due to the lack of friction, providing a sinking in and bumpy ride. Anyway, we need the sidewalks back, but the added guardrails would be certainly welcomed and would provide "more" safety for the pedestrians and bikers (I know they are not supposed to be on the paths/sidewalks).

Senator Mulroe also toured the area personally, and this morning, his office informed us that the traffic study got scheduled to occur shortly after the public school year begins. The results will be shared with us.

There are many questions about the study that I have posed and hope to get more details, like: What does it entail? How long will it take? When will the results be ready to be shared?

Our crossing guard Kristen would like to participate in the study and she suggested meeting with the surveyors either before (7:30-8:30 am) or after school (2:30-3:30pm), as the kids and their parents cross the street. It is important that the conversation with the local pedestrians is heavily considered as well as the accident record in the area. I am not sure how many accidents get reported, but I do hope that the majority do.

Looking for someone to sand and finish my floors.

Hello,
I was wondering if someone can give me some suggestions on a company to sand my floors.
My house is 106 yrs old and this is never been done. It really needs it !!!
Thank you, I appreciate any help and suggestions I will receive.

  • Zudor Flooring. Did my old house and everyone thinks I put in new floors. Highly recommend and the price was right.
    Paul Zudor
    847-824-2000

  • What is a ballpark figure on the cost to sand/refinish a basic 2 story home? I need to start budgeting so I can get our floors redone in the next few months.

Our house is 102 years old and the floors are in terrible condition. Do you have to move out while the work is being done? We have a lot of pets and no family in the area, so I'm concerned about how long the process takes.

Overflowing garbage in Old Irving Park

Help! We're moving to OIP and took possession of our house a couple of weeks ago. The previous owners left both garbage cans FULL, and we took them out to the end of our driveway for the city to empty them, but so far, nothing has happened. We live in Northcenter now, and our garbage is picked up every week. We were told that our OIP garbage would be picked up yesterday, but no luck. So, we have no place to put our garbage, AGAIN. Could someone please tell me what the routine is out there? THANKS!!

  • Kristine Cloud 30 year resident of North Center

Thank You, Alderman! I went online on the 311 site and requested a pickup, but if we don't get one soon I'll surely let you know.

  • Kathleen Boyle Your dog's best friend! (Taking real estate break)

Please do call Alderman Arena's office. Whenever people have an unusually large amount of trash piling up or an unusually large item, the city can send a truck out for a special pick-up!

When is the chipotle by six corners opening??

  • Yeah- I asked at the other chipotle on Addison and they said they've been held up for a couple weeks now on permitting/licensing issues. But otherwise they're pretty much good to go...but who knows how long that will take. sigh.

Date Night

So rather than doing the same old "dinner and a movie" routine, I want to think outside the box for our future date nights. I figured our Everyblock community would be an awesome idea generator. So neighbors what good options for live music, comedy shows, other entertainment do we have here on the NW side? I am thinking we'll check out a performance at the Gift Theater and visit the new Sip and Paint. What else?

  • Susan Long-time Jeff Park resident

One of the best dates my husband and I had (if you can get away overnight) was at the Fireside dinner theater in Ft. Atkinson, WI. It is about 2-1/2 hours away. They have a gourmet dinner, a little shopping, and then some of the best theater I've seen outside of downtown Chicago. Then you stay overnight (Johnson Creek is a good place). The hotel right by the property was NOT recommended the last time I went. I really like some of the suggestions above, too--they show great imagination!

  • There's always a night out bowling as well. If you feel neither of you is very good, that just adds to the fun, You're sure to have lots of laughs.

If we can't pay them cash, we can give them a pension. It's only $10 now but when they retire, it'll be the $100 they need. If the fund is paid into and the investments are sound. Pensions are normally more than 60% funded by investment returns. That's way cheaper than the SS or the proper pay.... There are articles in various news outlets to back this up...

  • EAB resident

I agree Andy. "If the fund is paid into and the investments are sound". But the city of Chicago has not funded the pensions for years. Where is the oversight. The teachers union should have been all over the city to ensure their pensions were funded.

Pot holes and streets situation

What do we have to do so Wilson st between Kilbourn and Kenton is fixed? I noticed the city did a mediocre job and covered the pot holes. On Kenneth and Wilson, we also have a big pot hole and they just put a metalic plate to cover it up. The streets in the neighborhood have been a mess since winter. I understand it was a rough winter, but its almost August already and this should have been addressed by now. Where is our Alderman???

  • On the Mayfair Library corner there is a new surface and crosswalk across Lawrence Ave., no potholes (not even those spike holes from the quickly demolished flapover pedestrian crossing signs), and new curb & gutter. The library is right next door to the offices of State Senator D'Amico, Alderman Laurino, Democratic Ward Committeeman Barnett. No actual pothole(s) prior to the resurfacing.

  • I think the stretch on Wilson Nathalia is referring to is actually Kilborn to Kenneth (the K-streets can be confusing!). That stretch of Wilson is a MESS! The patches the city put on those potholes are pathetic, like putting band-aids on gunshot wounds. That street needs to be completely repaved...

I think the stretch on Wilson Nathalia is referring to is actually Kilborn to Kenneth (the K-streets can be confusing!). That stretch of Wilson is a MESS! The patches the city put on those potholes are pathetic, like putting band-aids on gunshot wounds. That street needs to be completely repaved before the first snowfall. The first snow plow that hits it will tear it up so badly that it will be completely unusable.

A related sidenote, I too would like more visibility of Alderman Laurino on Everyblock. I follow the surrounding areas closely on EB and I respect how active Alderman Arena is. It's clear that his ward is improving and I think his efforts play a huge part. Mayfair is a great neighborhood but it can be greatly improved. Whatever it is she's doing to improve it, I don't know. I hope she's as active as her counterparts and if she is, she should chime in more often to keep us informed and engaged.

White Work Van Break-ins

Wanted to give every one out there with a working van a heads up. My work van has been broken into 3 times within one year. I mainly keep it on pulaski and bellee plaine but this last time I had parked it on belle plaine and harding. These thieves know what they are doing since they managed to pry my side door off and steal my tools.. Its unfortunate, but I hope I can prevent it from happening to someone else by posting here. For I know we contractors work too hard for someone to just stroll on by and break into our vans
