Speed Cameras

I have been thinking about the issue of speed cameras, I think it's fair to say their only true purpose is to make money for the city, it's just another tax, I would prefer a Cop with a radar, A speed camera can't pullover a motorist, a Cop can, a speed camera can't search a car for weapons or drugs, a Cop can, A speed camera won't deter a criminal driving past it at 2AM in the morning a Cop can, a speed camera can't react to a crime in progress a Cop can, unfortunately our the political leadership in this city Knows the "cost of everything and the value of nothing" just a little Carmen sense!

You are not getting it. I do not think it is wrong to "speed" as long as it's not excessive. It's an arbitrary limit enforced by the government just as some expressways outside of Illinois have 70 mph zones instead of 65. Fortunately they have or are going to raise certain stretches of highways in Illinois to 70 mph.

35 mph is not fast on certain roads or at certain times. Like the aforementioned Forest Preserve Dr. I can't speed on Irving even if I WANTED to during rush hours or during times with high-pedestrian activity because of the traffic so it's a mute point there.

Speed cameras are a money grab, plain and simple, and that's my gripe. Just be honest about it. It's fine if you agree with them, but the safety issue is a crock or a fortunate side effect. It is not for safety at all. School kids and park kids nearly get hit because they don't pay attention. They don't follow your precious rules either. There was a girl jaywalking on Irving yesterday who started yelling at a driver because they didn't stop to let her cross. There are others on cell phones or blatantly playing a game of chicken with a two-ton vehicle because they feel entitled.

How in the world did you survive into adulthood without the speed and red-light cameras, the speed humps and all the other measures? It's almost as if someone told you to look right, look left, then look right again before crossing. CRAZY.

  • i don't like the people that walk extra slow and leer at you, even thou you are stopping for them, they are almost tempting you to hit them..... maybe its just me.

just cross the street normally for god sake.

on a separate note today i was going down Lawrence and there were two ladies that ran up to the crosswalk, i braked hard and waved for them to go, they just looked at me. i was the only car there on either side. i kept waving... i put the car in park. they decided to cross. i think they were so surprised i stopped they did not know what to do.

i agree with speed being relative, some people will do 40 on Irving and drive safely, and then you have some people weaving in out and hitting 50 in the stretch.

almost 100% of the time i cross a busy street at a light, and i am still careful. i cross quickly and wave at any cars that maybe waiting.

i don't understand jaywalking, i think it is a risk and in areas of high jaywalking they should do crackdowns and write tickets... it is for public safety.

dmv says punish people that don't obey the rules, well breaking the rule of jaywalking can be punishable by death.

sometimes i am focused on the road in front of me and even when even doing the speed limit it is hard to identify if there is someone at a specific crosswalk to cross due to trees, parked cars etc,. i think by the time some drivers see them, the driver figures it is too late and maybe safer for the driver to drive pass then to slam on the brakes for the people on the corner that may or may not cross. there have been times i stopped for people and they are just standing on the corner facing the street being defective.

i think they should pass the law that you can only cross busy streets at lights, but if they want to make exceptions i think they need to put a stop sign that lights up when they push a button to cross, may be the cheapest solution, can be solar powered etc.

Peoples Gas work (photo)

Does any one have ANY idea when Peoples Gas will be wrapping things up? I've had a HUGE 5 ft deep hole in front of my house for about two months now! It's covered with broken, wet plywood (see photo). I'm just hoping no one gets hurt and that they can move on so our neighborhood can get back to normal. Kids at the nearby childcare center go on daily walks past this eyesore. 4700 block of Berenice

We just got the letter regarding appointment setup for moving the meter. They came this past week and the guy mentioned that they are behind schedule. Can anyone shed some light on how long it takes for them to move the meter from the initial appointment ? We're by Austin / Montrose. I also wonder what happens to those who don't call to set up the appointment and how that delay has impacted the delay in progress of the work.

Ok local residents [who were never asked in the first place,] do you think Waveland is an unnecessary road that allows unwanted access to residential streets? Seems to me to be one of OUR main access points since all roads lead north from here!

"$1.2 million capital campaign to construct an Athletic Field / arena" - an ARENA, no less, with no resident input?

So let's get this straight: close a street, take down approx 10 trees, build a bus turn-around on a residential corner, extend the field into a soccer/football field with a baseball diamond at the other end, a sports "arena" with no parking, rent it out for nights and weekend with no toilet facilities, no bleachers or seating?

And the Champion Alderman Arena thought it best NOT to mention this to the residents?

@Paul, you may be missing a fundamental concern. Absent full disclosure and community involvement the field may be developed with a primary goal of use & income for private soccer leagues and a perhaps token rental to the CPS--which may or may not cover maintenance of the field and the surrounding community area. Using the Wright College field (@Austin and Roscoe) as an example, few locals walk to practices and games. Most arrive by car. The field is locked behind high fences when the private leagues are not playing. I've seen admissions being collected.

Street parking: The west side of Milwaukee there is about to become more than 40 apartments/condos. Aganin at the Wright College field...there is a small parking lot. For bigger drawing games and tourneys parking spills onto the residential side streets. People sort of tail gate sometimes with the trash and noise results expected.

Good point, Botkin - but I thought it would be a nice way to open a dialogue with Mr. Tucker. His pat response is typical, however. The Process!

Good Morning The process of running for Alderman is a lot of work as it should be, the people that I have been meeting have been so kind, it’s been a wonderful opportunity to listen and more importantly to learn want people want from their public officials. They’ve been telling that they feel like they have no voice in the way city government is conducted. Because of my background I have very good connection with working people, because I’m in the Military, I have a certain connection with the Veterans, because of my large family I understand the teachers and their concerns, and as the father two Chicago Police Officers, I understand what they facing on a daily basis.

My questions to you is if you got rid of the cameras and increased police presence how would you propose to pay for the additional cost of the officers when you are losing a revenue source? How would you control cost in order to balance the budget? I think Chicago is endanger of driving people, businesses and tourist from our city due to over taxing and too many fees. Don't get me started on the parking meter debacle..

Proposed Centrum development, Irving Park/Keeler/Avondale

Missed last night's meeting? Here's what Centrum proposes for Irving/Keeler parcel. Two story commercial bldg fronting Irving, tapering down to 1 story along Keeler & Avondale. Parking lot separates 18 residential units on south end, in 3 bldgs. Six 2 bdrm units, duplexed into basement. Twelve 1 bdrm units, 1850 sq. ft. All rentals.

  • We need to support revitalizing OIP and bringing in good retail & restaurants. high end rentals will bring in younger people to discover OIP as great alternatives to Logan Square, etc. I'm all for more restaurants and an attractive addition instead of the eye sore on Keeler/Avondale/Irving Park. Look further down Irving Park and along Milwaukee in Portage Park and be thankful we have investors who want to put down money in our OIP.

I personally feel that the area needs more rentals, and affordable rentals at that. I am the last member of my family still in the area, and I choose to live here because it has always felt like home. Unfortunately, I cannot buy a condo or a home due to the prices and financing requirements these days, even though for some listings, I could afford the mortgage and HOA fees. (Just don't have a 20 percent down payment). I currently live in a condo that is being rented out (which is generally what happens with all of these condos anyway - bought up by investors and not home buyers) - and they have been saying they might sell in the near future. When they do, I will be priced out of this neighborhood that I grew up in, and that my family was a part of for over a hundred years. (My family, The Klemundts, had a funeral home from 1909 to 2004) It floors me that every development in every neighborhood these days is for high end condos or apartments, that lead to folks like me who are renters but do really care about their neighborhood to have to leave. I do like the renderings, I will say it would be an interesting addition to that corner - but look up and down Irving Park Road, and even six corners... tons of empty storefronts and no one to fill them. Is a big retail building what is really needed? frankly, I kinda wish that someone would buy the place and reopen as a new Red Star Inn. I have fond childhood memories of going there. Or, if they do have to develop it - make some apartments that folks who don't have $1500 to $2000 a month to spend on housing can actually live in.

Hello neighbors. There is much conversation about the potential for a new field at Schurz HS that would significantly disturb the neighborhood. The organization that is spearheading this is called Urban School Foundation. Mr. Bob Tucker Sr. is the head of the group. Below is his email. Please start filling Mr. Tucker's email with messages that while his goal of a field might be well intended Schurz and Old Iriving is not the place to build the field.

Do we really need 50 Alderman?

Well what do you think? personally I think we can manage with about 25, It's time for City Government to join the real world! We pump our own gas, bag our own groceries, and if we have to keep 50 Alderman let's make it a part-time position that way maybe they'll have to get a real job!

  • ok, so from what I am reading the alderman get a staffing budget and they have to work within that budget. you have one chief of staff, then 3 staff members is the average.

Ald. Arena will hold a community meeting in early October to discuss a proposed new field at Schurz H.S. which would require vacating Waveland Ave. from Milwaukee to Lowell.

STATEMENT FROM ALDERMAN ARENA ON PROPOSED SCHURZ HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC FIELD

As we continue to support efforts in revitalizing the northwest side of Chicago, we must also ensure these efforts have significant community and neighborhood input. A proposal put forth by the Urban Schools Foundation to strengthen the athletic program at Schurz High School, including the construction of a new IHSA standard athletic field from Waveland Avenue to Kostner Avenue, is in the preliminary stage of conceptual design. The goal is to provide our future students access to the same amenities and competitive programs offered at so many other neighborhood high schools.

We all want Schurz to improve and thrive as a strong neighborhood school - one that draws families to the neighborhood, and one that our families are proud to send their children to. We will seek solutions to address and mitigate concerns that have arisen from the initial proposal.

I will host a public meeting on the proposal in early October, where I encourage a respectful discussion as with other developments and improvements along this stretch of Milwaukee Avenue - Artist Nick Cave's Studio & Gallery, as well as a new 50 single-family residential development - Schurz deserves the same vigorous process.

More details will be released as we receive them. Please remember that the proposal is just that - a proposal - and no final decision has been made. I take seriously your concerns and will ensure they are heard and incorporated in discussions as we continue to craft a plan that meets the needs of the community and the school.

- Alderman John Arena, 45th Ward

    part 3
Here’s the letter that was sent to Ald. Arena in March, 2014. It’s a starting point for the community conversation.

"Thank you for meeting with our board of director’s to answer questions and address concerns about the impact of a larger high school playing field in Old Irving Park. The current plan calls for vacating one block of Waveland Ave., from Milwaukee to 3700 block of Lowell, in order to expand the existing field.

We understand the benefits of building a beautiful new field, and the positive impact it could have on Schurz H.S. However, we have homeowners who live directly next to the field on 3 sides. Eliminating the Waveland entrance from Milwaukee Ave. impacts every resident south of Irving Park, restricting how we can get to our homes and garages. Our group’s mission is to assess how our communal quality of life would be impacted by this proposal.

You have asked the Chicago Dept. of Transportation to conduct a traffic study to see how traffic patterns would change if that one block of Waveland was permanently closed. We all agreed that if the CDOT study shows that vacating Waveland is not advised due to negative impact, the current field expansion proposal will be scrapped.

Just caught up with my EB with today's feed. My comments of today to yesterday's feed stand. Part of what I stated: a similar plan was attempted by Schurz some years ago. The idea landed like a lead balloon back then.
And, as Pat said in the previous comment, there are many questions and issues that need to be addressed and resolved.

He's wandering near the corner of Addison & Milwaukee. Has become interested in our place because of our cats sitting in the window. We started feeding him because it was obvious that he wasn't being fed, yet it's also obvious he belonged to somebody because he showed little fear of people and took to our attention and petting immediately.

Now he's returning because of the food and love we give him. I'd take him in, but as I said, we've got our own cats and they're enough for the apartment we live in. And so we also can't keep him safely inside either.

Hate the idea of bringing him to animal control. Been there, not a good place to end up. I know Anti-Cruelty is an option. Hoping we can find him a good home if we can't find his owners.

  • If he were a feral cat I'd be less concerned, honestly. But since he is a house cat, last thing I want is for him to turn feral and get hurt in a bad way or hurt others.

Plus he was starved and begging. Much less thinnow after a few days of food. I've named him Oliver. :)

If anyone knows of a good home for him, contact me.

  • I don't understand how people can just discard of pets like trash. In my opinion it seems like animal cruelty. If the owner can't take care of a pet anymore they should at least try to find the cat a home or take the cat to a shelter. Bless you for helping him.

38th Ward.

I would like to personally thank the good people of the 38th Ward for taking the time to talk to me and sign my petition, I know people are tired of us knocking on your door asking for your signature, the people I'm meeting are very supportive, once again thank you taking the time and effort to keep our system working.
I hope to see you at the ceremony for the victims of the Sept, 11th , 2001 which will be held at Veteran's Square on Milwaukee Ave,

Shots Fired

Last night around 8:45, at the corner of Keystone & Belle Plaine, gun shots were fired and a white 4-door car went racing down Keystone. Is anyone aware of this?

  • It happened right in front of our house. We heard the shots and went outside (cautiously). Some other neighborhood guys were working on their car in the street and saw what happened. Apparently there were two SUVs speeding through- one stopped, and someone got out from the other SUV behind...

It happened right in front of our house. We heard the shots and went outside (cautiously). Some other neighborhood guys were working on their car in the street and saw what happened. Apparently there were two SUVs speeding through- one stopped, and someone got out from the other SUV behind the stopped SUV and started shooting at the stopped SUV. Then they both sped off. The police did show up, about 5 minutes later and asked what happened and for descriptions of the cars. I wish I would have seen what had happened- we only heard the shots.

  • I was near that area when the 6 gun shots were fired. The cars seemed to have been chasing each other. It is possible that the cars were chasing each other on the expressway and one car got off in order to lose the other car.

6 corners Petsmart?

For some time they have been talking and from what I understand planning for a Petsmart next to jewel by 6 corners. My question is two part. 1. When is the estimated completion/opening dates? 2. If Petsmart already has the spot why is there still a for lease sign in the window?

  • I'm also very curious as to a timeline for opening.

  • pattymelt is mostly in charge

The universe was put on hold while the Chipotle was being built. Now that it is open, I am sure this will move forward.

Irving Park Rd (Bet. Harlem & Cumberland)

Since last fall, I became outwardly concerned with the state of Irving Park Rd near my home. Our Illinois Route 19 acts much like highway, between Harlem Ave. and Cumberland Ave. There are two cemeteries on each side of it, which are Acacia Park Cemetery and Irving Park Cemetery. Cars ZOOM BY with little concern for the pedestrians and bikers. Anyone who would pull a traffic report would note that deadly accidents and bumper to bumper accidents are not a stranger here! Two of my neighbors were KILLED over the past two years, one on a bike and one in the car. This year, someone just DROVE THROUGH the rusted-out fence into Irving Park Cemetery. Often KIDS on bikes, MOTHERS with strollers and ELDERLY with their shopping carts either struggle through the gravel and mud filled paths, where used to be once concrete sidewalks on "both" sides of the road, or they maneuver their equipment into the street. These both northern and southern sidewalks used to be functional until they were abandoned in the late 1960's or so. If anyone would talk to the CROSSING guard by N. Pioneer Ave, ours is Kristen, would learn of the frequent dangers of crossing the street. She will be back in the fall when the school restarts and would appreciate having traffic lights installed, too. The requests to fix these sidewalks have bounced around various public offices with mixed results. I PLEA with all concerned citizens to assist me with getting this overdue safety issue resolved by contacting all politicians overseeing or soon-to-be overseeing this area. Hearing from the community-at-large vs. one neighborhood mother is far more impactful I am told. Thank you!!!

Please e-mail your support for the sidewalks to:
