CW Price gone!

I knew it would happen. CW Price is finally closing. Actually glad to see them go. What a junk store. Any idea what might be moving in?
Limited parking spaces put the damper on anything very good.
They should tear down the entire complex and build a multiple-level building with parking.

What does John Garrido say about attracting business?

Copernicus re Attracting Business
Question: What can an alderman do to attract more business to the ward?

Garrido: For decades in this ward, businesses come and businesses go. And you've seen mailer after mailer, 80 new businesses that the alderman single-handedly brought into the ward, brought into the community. But you can drive up and down Milwaukee Avenue and you see empty storefront after empty storefront. Now, we've asked repeatedly, we'd liike to seethe list of these 80 businesses and maybe he has one, maybe he doesn't. But, I've got a list of over 200 businesses that have left the ward since he's taken office. Again, you can drive around yourself and see. So, maybe he has a list of 80 businesses that he's going to try to rattle off, but where are
they? Because we've got a lot of empty storefronts. We need to do is do a better job at marketing our community. We need to work together with our Chambers of Commerce and our neighborhood organizations, have a monthly roundtable meeting, to to implement that plan of marketing. And, also, we need to have an experienced Business Development Liaison in our office that will work with these businesses that come in the ward and help retain them. Having businesses just come and go as a natural ebb and flow, well, then nothing's changed. We need to figure out how to keep these businesses here and help them to stay.

Now, after Mr Garrido's response, do you know if answered the question:
What can an alderman do to attract more business to the ward?

What does John Garrido say?
We need...to meet, with chambers, with associations,
Hire an experienced Business Development Liaison
We need to figure out...

Acknowledge the question then pivot? Done.
Anybody have a clarity on this question? No, what can an *alderman* do
Mission accomplished.

45th Ward Election Results by Precinct

I've made a map of the 45th Ward election results from the 2/24/15 municipal election by precinct. I've categorized the map in terms of first past the post voting, or the precincts "won" by the candidate that took the majority of the votes.

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z9EVMxrqh5mI.kCUow3JpilW8

Overlaid on top of this are precincts highlighted in a red boundary. These precincts were won by Alderman Arena but in which the difference between Alderman Arena and John Garrido's vote totals was smaller than the number of votes given to Michelle Baert. This suggests that these precincts might be in play should all of Ms. Baert's votes be assigned to Mr. Garrido.

  • Ryan Richter Transportation Planner in Jefferson Park

    I meant "won" that precinct.

  • @Ryan - I understand and Diaz got not one vote, but am still surprised. Thanks again for the map.

House Inspection Recommendations

Hi, I'm looking for recommendations for a house inspection. Preferably an inspector who has experience with older city homes (bungalows, georgians and frame homes). I'm planning ahead for a single family home purchase. Thanks!

  • Preeti Superstar, animal lover, just me

Thanks Kari, great name for home inspections, Speaker of the House. Makes me think of Holmes on DIY. :)

I highly recommend James Clark with TrueBlue Home inspections. He has been in business for many years and specializes in older homes. I've been referring him to clients for the past 6 or more years and everyone is amazed by his attention to detail and thoroughness. Makes realtors nervous, but thats a good thing for the buyer ;) He also has an infrared gun that helps you go beyond walls if you will, to find water penetration or faulty electric, etc. He is also very affordable and he also has many years experience in construction and home repair, so he can provide a lot of insight that most inspectors cannot.
Call his cell at 312-925-0166 website is www.trueblueinspections.com
I do NOT recommend Speaker of the House!

Loose German Shepard Dog

Hi neighbors,

A stray German Shephard dog was just sighted by a neighbor on the Villa (south/west) side of the Kennedy Expressway on the embankment by Pulaski.

Is anyone nearby and willing to help? Please spread the word.

Thanks!

  • Lorrie, thank you, there was a missing German Shepherd post here yesterday. Do you have an update on this dog?

Considering a move to Old Irving Park

Hello, I'm considering a move to the Old Irving Park area. Maybe Portage Park too depending on where I find a house. I'm wondering how diverse the area is, the commute downtown via train, etc. I've been in Ravenswood for over ten years and love the diversity (ethnic, mix of singles, families, straight and gay, etc.) and ease of commuting downtown (brown line or metra). I've driven around the area and visited some houses for sale but that does not give me the scoop on the neighborhood. I'm looking forward to feedback from people living in the area. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Organic Gardening

If you currently have an organic garden, or you would like to have an organic garden, I would like to offer my assistance. I can help you in creating an organic vegetable and/or herb garden or I can help you tend to a garden you already have. My name is Jose Bautista and my plan is to work in many gardens over the summer. No matter the type of urban farming you have/want: container plants, raised beds, or in-ground, I want to work in it all. If you might be interested please contact me and we can discuss this further. Have a good one.

  • How about at Misericordia? They are putting an organic vegetable garden in from scratch this spring.

Irving and Pulaski

In the past few weeks the intersection at Irving and Pulaski has gotten really backed up in the mornings - particularly Pulaski headed south. Maybe it's my imagination...wondering if anyone else has noticed or knows if they changed the timing on lights or anything else that may be impacting. It's crazy how one light can kill your commute!

Catalytic Converters

This past Friday evening a friend of mine had her catalytic converter stolen. When she filed the report she was told hers was the 4th in a week. We are around the Irving & Kostner area.

  • Careyann, why the Attorney General?! Reporting a catalytic converter stolen doesn't make the news, what YOU do about it does. You form a block club, you set up a community task force, you get proactive and you'll make it newsworthy. You'll also stop the thieves. It's not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

  • Careyann Old Irving resident

Hi Happiness: I like your ideas, they're very good ones! :)
I bring up the Attorney General angle because this problem appears to be both growing and ongoing. If the bad guy's source of revenue (ie bad body shops or salvage yards) can be scrutinized, get leaned on, flow of business slowed down or stopped, perhaps that type of crime will become less appealing.

Arena's Office Vandalized

So this is what the election has been reduced too?

Not sure how anyone could support this kind of behavior. Even if Arena's opponents did not condone this behavior, it says a lot about those who are in favor of Arena's opponents.

I guess we'll see this evening if a positive campaign comes out on top.

https://twitter.com/JohnArena445/status/570180903177101314

  • What happened to Arena yesterday? What is this message? I watched everyone’s FB and Arena didn’t get many likes on any of them. Did his campaign volunteers cut and run?

  • Looks like some slushy from 7-11. Someone may have picked it up from 7-11 @ Jeff Park and didn't like the flavor so dumped it on the sidewalk. Drama much ?

Ok local residents [who were never asked in the first place,] do you think Waveland is an unnecessary road that allows unwanted access to residential streets? Seems to me to be one of OUR main access points since all roads lead north from here!

"$1.2 million capital campaign to construct an Athletic Field / arena" - an ARENA, no less, with no resident input?

So let's get this straight: close a street, take down approx 10 trees, build a bus turn-around on a residential corner, extend the field into a soccer/football field with a baseball diamond at the other end, a sports "arena" with no parking, rent it out for nights and weekend with no toilet facilities, no bleachers or seating?

And the Champion Alderman Arena thought it best NOT to mention this to the residents?

  • Jill, you are violating Everyblock community guidelines. And those of human decency. On Election Day. Hopefully, EB will be pulling your posts that violate their guidelines.
