Music man - glad to see you type out more than a few sentences. I am not a touch typist and sometimes just get tired of typing so perhaps come off a bit brusk or half baked. Glad people are getting used to the idea that I may have more to say if they wait for it or engage me. Is there a link for the publication I have missed? I am a fan of Asimov's robot trilogy and would not think going carfree for everyone an option we will see soon though I would not mind it. We are car free for the last three years and it does take some planning though we can always grab a taxi or a zio car in an emergency. Zip Car is also adding spots around here and currently looking for folks with publicly accessable spaces. I should have posted that as a seperate post and may later.

  • Hey Randy my thumbs do get tired from time to time, probably an indication that I'm rambling on too much. As for the book I referred to, Carfree Cities published by International Books, it looks like there might be a pdf available but maybe you can get the book through Amazon.

I have the worst tooth ache I've ever experienced.. this tooth (back molar "first molar") is giving me an unbearable headache. (I think the molar is infected... I was told it needed to have a root canal when I went to Dental Dreams a few months back... but I refused the root canal because it was so expensive... and decided to wait and see.... well now I realize I should have had the darn molar pulled back then.... I just didn't want to then because I'm in my early 20s and was scared off of extracting the tooth by my dentist... who said that if I pull it. There would be a gap.. and my teeth would all shift and then they will all start getting weaker and sooner or later I'd be young and missing a lot of teeth...)

I called Precision Dental on Diversey... and they estimated on the phone that an extraction would be about $200-300 for new patients... I need something more reasonable... like less than $100 or a place that accepts the medical card (which I just received in the mail a little while ago)

Any recommendations?
Thanks!

  • I doubt he's open on Sunday, but if you can wait I've gone to this dentist to get a tooth pulled. It's not fancy, but it's cheap and got the job done.
    Dr. Andrew V. Brachmanski, DDS
6356 E Irving Park Rd Chicago, IL 60634

Don't worry about the answering machine being in Polish. He speaks perfect English.

  • see if you can get a root canal. don't get an extraction if you don't need that. choose among the medicaid approved dentists and check out the dentists before you decide on one. seriously, don't use someone that someone on this thread suggests. you might be wondering what credentials i have to give this advice…….i'm a mother.

Chicago Ballet Center Design Competition

Harrington College of Design has organized an interior design competition for the new Chicago Ballet Center facilities at 4041 N Milwaukee (across from the Portage Theater). Designers' presentations and jury selection of the winning design will be Sunday, March 29. The event will begin at 3 with designers presentations starting at 3:30.

Come by and see the innovative, creative designs that will transform a wide open, blank space to an engaging and safe place for creativity to flourish.

This is just the beginning!

  • We are planning to add youth and adult flamenco and tap classes in the new space. One studio will have a floor specifically designed for those classes. Other additions to our ballet and pointe classes include Broadway jazz, hip hop, contemporary and yoga. Voice, cello, piano, viola, violin and guitar music classes will also be on our schedule.

Bingo night

For the first time this evening my wife and I attended a portage park helping hands event. During the first break John Arena joined the party. It was great to see him join neighborhood events.

I am curious though.

Nick Sposato why did you not attend a benefit for a school in your new ward? You are not off to a very good start. You may not have "started" yet but I expect to see you show up.

My issue with Sposato is the lack of progress in 36 but somehow was elected in 38. I never wanted him in the first place. Now he is here and I can only imagine he will do the same thing he did in 36. Which appears to be nothing. So yeah, I am going to be extra hard on him.

Side note: yes bingo was fun. Thank you for hosting. Hopefully some money was made and you do another.

Just as an epilogue I took the machine to E&J on Addison (at the advice of Portage Porker and others) and it turns out Porker was right. Replacing the cylinder per the recall had nothing to do with my issue and the timing of my misfire was just a coincidence. My misfire was caused by a faulty ignition control module - which was replaced - and two cylinders misfiring. I gotta new ignition module, ignition coil and all new plugs.

Cost was more than expected but not out of the realm of imagination considering it's a 2003 model and I have not had this service before (at 89,000 miles was waiting for another 10,000) for the tune up.

Thanks to all for your advice and recommendations. I can't wait for April 8!

I think that is a really good cop

So if IU had taken the bus home from work last night he could have reported this from ground level.

I think this is the Sgt that actually used to stop people who ran stop signs and that the rowdy young folks and older rowdies knew at well so not sure why she is having to work nights but maybe she likes sleeping days or that is a career move. My experiance though is the Krats have no knowledge of what goes on at night and one gets stuck there if doing a job in a way that causes waves.

Let us be honest with ourselves folks. Some of us are getting old and we would enjoy a bit of that even if we are gettin a little crotchety. Maybe even the same sort of thing in Polish, Spanish, Greek, German or Russian.

Wondering though if our plans to become a theatre and arts district are viewed by Rham as bumping stomachs with his Ravenswood, Uptown, Lakeview plans that seem to me to be a grab for extending the real estate values of the Gold Coast.

https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150327/uptown/mayor-rahm-emanuel-says-hes-not-all-talk-on-uptown-music-district-vision

For myself, if I did not have family duties to attend to in Houston, I would simply find a way to isolate or cocoon myself here. Or maybe just plan some retreats to Lake Geneva or Puerta Vallerta to avoid the crowds.

To be clear though I do think a vote for Garrido is a vote do nothing me first thinking by people afraid of change, cops and people who know cops so think they will have a secondary connection.

Me, Arena has no reason to listen to me or to IU, Real Kenji or fake Kenji or any of the rest of us but he does. And I am sure he gets tired of hearing our wishes for Cadillac solutions when we give him a Dodge Dart budget. He does listen though then goes and sit though all that boring s*&^ of all the other reps propeled by their own me first constituents. Times are changing though and soon our own me first clammer may well be can we listen to each other and navigate change without running each other down on Milwaukee.

I think there is room here for Rham's vision over there and our vision up around here.

A cop that will not listen and only pays attention to business owners is not likely to listen to any of us though I sort of feel like he would want to I just do not think it is in his makeup.

  • A comment from "...cops and people who know cops so think they will have a secondary connection." from the Secondcitycop blog:

"Don't Forget about the local Aldermanic races. We have a friend in Nick Sposato in 38. We need to support Anthony Napolitano CFD, prior CPD in 41 and Lt. Garrido in 45. All of them will vote in our interests. "

Through them, my family learned of Quest Theatre Ensemble, another amazing organization, and their community giveback. As a matter of fact, the two organizations share some common members.

If you have ever wondered but could not take out your family to a quality free show, here is your opportunity:

"Join Quest for the world premiere musical, Tomato Queen! Journey with Camina as she tries to discover the secret to growing a perfect tomato--a feat that could earn her a crown! Cheer on Camina and her new friend Dormouse as they battle homesickness, a humongous Hornworm, and an Evil Scientist bent on destruction. Tomato Queen features live music and Quest's signature large-scale puppetry." http://questensemble.org/index.php

Saw the performance last night with my family. A good number of children, even of preschool age, were present in the audience. The performance was professionally prepared and executed for mere donations! This is a great community outreach, indeed. Thank you, Quest!

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you?

Imagine standing in your back yard and you look up, and 48 windows are looking back at you from the 48 unit apartment building at the end of you block. How will you feel laying out to get some sun, or your kids playing in the splash pool? Never going to happen on your block, maybe not, but would you wish that on anybody? John Arena loves density, and if there is an empty lot or tired old commercial building, a closed church nearby, you are extremely vulnerable. Our old alderman's "spot zoning" was bad enough, but Arena is bad up-zoning on steroids. Before you vote, ask yourself, COULD YOU BE NEXT?

  • Republicans like bumper sticker length solutions.

About the show:
Inspired by last year's relentless Chicago winter (and let's face it, the one currently drawing to a close hasn't been so great either), Duplicity Ensemble combines two of Shakespeare's greatest plays to create the ultimate antidote for cabin fever at Filament Theatre. When four young lovers chance upon into a quiet mountain cabin while looking for shelter from a snowstorm, life is turned upside-down as hearts get broken, muffins get eaten and a play is read in this modern comic mash-up of The Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Once everything has been spun backwards, can it be set right again?

Rather sad that someone can't even walk through the neighbor hood without being in danger.
And, before anyone asks - no, it was not reported to the police. I would pressure him to do so, however numerous past experiences dealing with the police have been more frustrating rather than reassuring. Since my family moved in to Portage Park six years ago we've had the cars broken into 3 times, my father punched in his face from someone with road-rage, someone get out of their car to threaten me, my son both approached by a sexual predator (when he was underage) and held up at gun point and robbed and now my daughter's boyfriend being attacked. I don't see the area getting any better - rather seems that things are getting worse.
Be careful and aware of your surroundings while walking around - and try to walk with someone instead of alone. These scumbags are all over.

Hope there not going to use the alley as a commercial entrance or allow cars through the alley preventing the Police, Fire Department and Ambulance from any life threatening situation or even prevent some other city services or the utility companies from passage through a grid lock neighborhood.

Let's call our Alderman Ariel Reboyras and complained, so please call him starting MONDAY at 773-794-3095 before the zoning change or he gets his license!!

the post from the 30th ward 11 hours ago says plans are on hold. It looks like the owner has the option of a community meeting. If he decides to have one, it can re- start the entire process. I advise anyone who is against it, or for it, should go to the community meeting.

Up and down the block where Jennifer and Donald Glover live are signs in the window. “No Pawn Shop” they state. The pawn shop they are fighting will be located in the 6400 block of North Avenue, a few blocks...

St. Pascal School's summer program is very popular. I hope that if you are looking for a camp or program for your children this summer, you consider this one.

  • Misplaced Texan Fourth Year In PP

Our daughter has attended for the last three years and loves it. They have lots of fun, but manage to squeeze in some learning as well. Lots of field trips too. We highly recommend.

As a bonus they offer onsite before and after school care (for extra, but reasonable charge).

Peoples Gas Neighborhood Upgrades Installation: Landscaping Disaster

Anyone else upset about the way these upgrades were handled? Essentially, they dug up the land, did something underneath it, installed a pipe for a new meter (I assume) and dumped sand in to replace the soil. They also actually ripped up the sidewalk to do this work and then filled it in with Gravel. In addition, they spray painted the sidewalk with a permanent paint.

  • Helen R Portage Park resident since 1983

The new gas lines were done on my block several years ago. They did an excellent job of putting it back together. I would think the timing of this project (winter) is the problem.

  • Portage Parker Posey Proud Portage Park homeowner since 2006

Michels tore up our block's sidewalks in late fall and are only now beginning to set forms and pour replacement concrete. We participated in the city's sidewalk share replacement program 1.5 years ago, and 6/8 squares we paid for were damaged (removed, corner cracks, overcuts and heaving out of level)....

We participated in the city's sidewalk share replacement program 1.5 years ago, and 6/8 squares we paid for were damaged (removed, corner cracks, overcuts and heaving out of level). But only 3 were painted for replacement, which is an issue. Peoples Gas should be embarrassed about how poorly this project and its impact has been communicated to customers. I've gotten no information from the PG CS # and no calls returned by supervisors they forward me to. Alderman is frustrated as well but offered no contact information for the contractor for our block. A fellow neighbor finally tracked down the foreman on the project the day the concrete work was to begin. PG and Alderman should be much more forthcoming with the contact information. Communication goes a long way to manage expectations.

Stolen Dog ALERT

Please keep an eye out for this dog that was stolen at a gas station this morning: "Cloud aka Neven is a 16.5 lb golden retriever mix that was stolen from his owners car and loaded into a black minivan this morning as she was getting gas at the Shell gas station at the intersection of Cicero/Montrose in Chicago. 4401 North Cicero Avenue, Chicago, IL 60630"

Police have been notified.

This is not my dog, but sharing information.

The original "stolen dog" story is full of holes. If this vet dumped Neven there is very little legal action that can be taken but her practice and reputation could be severely damaged. It's horrible when anyone treats an animal in this matter (or any living creature) but it goes way beyond horrible when it is a veterinarian. The licensing board for Vets takes all complaints seriously and may be a good place to start. Caution and facts needs to take precedence over emotion but I do think this needs to be investigated and if I am not mistaken she had another incident that was suspect with a dog she owned (please note, I did not fact check this information)
Sarah I am so sorry this happened to you. Thank you for being willing to adopt, foster and allow yourself to be subject to this kind of heartbreak despite all your best and careful efforts.

  • Paula, Belmont Terrace 9-year resident

Sarah, I am so sorry for your loss. It's hard to imagine that there are people who are so careless and irresponsible as Ms. Davis. You did your very best to help Neven prepare for a forever home. Remember that he had a wonderful life during the months he was cared for by you- he was very lucky in that way. Thank you for fostering rescued animals. I hope you're able to continue doing this important work.

"Protecting the Character of Established Residential Neighborhoods."

That is one of the first three reasons given under the City of Chicago's Zoning Ordinance book, it's listed on one of the first pages, under "Purpose and Intent" (Section 17-1-500). SO HOW DOES ADDING A FIVE FLOOR 48 UNIT RENTAL APARTMENT BUILDING MAINTAIN THE CHARACTER OF A NEIGHBORHOOD DOMINATED BY SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES AND 2-FLATS? www.jeffersonparkfreepress.com

  • Nope....must be a missing link. And like Johnny says " what does it really matter".

  • Yes, Ryan, there's a lot that has to be considered in urban planning as you know through your knowledge and experience with this weighty issue. Anything less and we'd simply wind up with those huge mega residences like that 1909 Burnham plan. Well, they indeed got their shopping mega malls,...

Yes, Ryan, there's a lot that has to be considered in urban planning as you know through your knowledge and experience with this weighty issue. Anything less and we'd simply wind up with those huge mega residences like that 1909 Burnham plan. Well, they indeed got their shopping mega malls, didn't they! But in your last post you put your finger on the one component that seems to be behind all the emotion and ill will (not from you I should add) surrounding the local planning, and that is guiding of housing development based on "market conditions".
