Any used Speedheaters for sale?

We just bought a bungalow with tons of painted wood trim. We want to remove all the paint and restore the wood to its original look without using chemical strippers. I thought we'd see if any of our neighbors have taken on this same project and used a Speedheater that they no longer need. If so, we'd love to buy it from you!

The future is in Home Schooling by computer software programs. They can do it more efficiently and wont strike. Programs do not have bad days or molest children. Remove the human flaw factor from the education process and watch human intelligence soar to keep up with the technological reality of the future. Where computers and machines out calculate and out think us. A million fold. All in the next two decades. Need New Glasses

It's been too long since I've gotten my glasses updated and just found out that my optometrist of 30 years has retired. I've never checked out those storefront eyeglass chains, like Lenscrafters, figuring that they were pretty much the Little Caesars of optometry. Anyone have any experience with those, or can recommend a real eye doctor around here? Thanks in advance.

Fence recommendations, please

We figure this is the best place to ask...

Does anyone have a great resource for fence builders/contractors?

We want to have an ornamental steel and red cedar fence installed in our backyard. We are looking for something more sophisticated than your good ol' Home Depot special. We checked out TruLink but between the banker's hours and not returning our calls, we want to go a different route.

Thanks!

  • Jan

Supremely happy to refer Adam Lee 773-941-3432. He is just FAB! He has done work for me whenever fencing was needed. You won't be disappointed. He started out as a teenager installing fences and now in his 30's has his own company.

Splendid Soap Shop

I just found a wonderful little shop at Irving Park Rd and Mead (across from The Portage Theatre) called Distinct Bath and Body.
They sell handmade soap (made on site), bath salts, scrubs, face masks, shaving soaps, loofahs, etc.
Everything smells wonderful and the owner is friendly and attentive.
If you love artisinal bath products, you gotta check it out!

I love that store! I'm addicted to the oatmeal milk and honey soap. Prices are good and it's nice to support our local shops. My only wish would be that they would open until at least 6 or so. They make great gifts.

The last day of operation will be Wednesday, 7-30-14. Until then there will be a clearance sale at both stores starting on 7-23-14.

Ownership of the 6 corners shop will be transferred to the current manager of that shop (me.) However the other shop will be closed permanently.

Due to the usual legal stuff (leases, business licenses, etc.) there will be a gap between the closing the old store and opening the new one. I have been working on this since we were notified of the closings 7 weeks ago but this takes longer that you would expect.

I would like to thank the community for its support over the decades and I hope to see you back when we reopen.

See you soon,

  • Giovina Austin & Irving resident since '85

@EB Kitty if you read the post fully, you will notice that Dale will continue the key shop at the Sears Six Corners location under his own business name called the "Sears Key Shop" so it is not closing entirely. Well at the least the NW location! Thank God as that is the only place I have ever had keys made~

  • Today is the last day under Things Remembered, and also the last day of the huge sale. The shop will be closed at least until Sunday.

AT&T DSL Modem

Does anyone have an AT &T DSL modem they want to sell or barter? I understand why this project is necessary and appreciate the scope of it, but it doesn't seem like Peoples Gas or the crews they are contracting for this are committed to following the "campsite rule." In addition to the requisite removal of hundreds of dollars worth of sod and recently paved walkways, as well as the trashing of the landscaping along the side of my house, they've strewn water bottles, cigarette butts and half-eaten pieces of pizza along my lawn and sidewalk.

Does anybody know whether Peoples Gas is going to take responsibility for at least repaving the sidewalk, removing excess piles of dirt/construction debris, and restoring the grass or are homeowners just expected to take this upon themselves?

I had an appointment yesterday for both meter move and a safety inspection. When I made the appointment with PG, the said we could "do both at the same time." The meter-mover guy showed up within the two-hour window, went in the basement with something that looked like a handheld meter, looked at the meter and the furnace, then went outside to make a mark where the meter would go. Took all of 15 minutes. I went upstairs to finish getting ready for work and when I went out the front door 30 minutes later there was a note, supposedly from the safety guy, saying he had come and I was not at home!! I was upstairs and my door chimes are very loud! He could not possibly have rung the the bell with my hearing them! So much for a two-fer!

He and his associate came out within the hour, which was great given the forthcoming thunderstorm we had Saturday night.

They were very reasonable, and easy to work with. They moved one of our downspouts, sealed off our catch basin intake, added a new downspout, removed the clog, pruned an overhanging tree, and cleaned out the gutters where necessary. I'd say they were there for about two hours - price was $140. I gave them $200 because I was so happy with the work, and they came within the hour. I'd recommend, and use again.

That seems a bit harsh Dennis. Have you witnessed this yourself or are you just siding with the upset neighbor? I guess it really doesn't matter since Resident20 inactivated their account days ago, but at least they were trying to solicit advice. There are people whose dogs bark incessantly and they are not even thinking about. Its hard not to get defensive when several people immediately attack you assuming that you were in the wrong. If Resident20 has had a number of dogs and this is the first problem they have had in 20 years, it stands to reason that they are not one of these oblivious dog owners that leave their dog barking the day away.

I have people who live a little farther down, one lady pointing and complaining about my dogs. It's interesting, because no one really gathers the facts. We have a dog downstairs who is let out and barks for hours. The two dogs next to us bark a lot as well as the other side's dog. But immediately, it is pointing fingers. Sometimes you just have to let people complain. I agree dogs shouldn't be let out though for a long time, especially when they are barkers. And, keep in mind the hours too. I mean, if it is late at night, it would bother me too.

Tree removal from backyard

We have a large tree in our backyard that we want to remove. We have talked with our neighbor (since the tree leans into his property) and he agrees it is time for the tree to go.
Can anyone recommend someone to take the tree out. It is about 2 stories tall and a full canopy (would love to remove it before the leaves fall for the autumn).

  • I've used Jim's Tree Service four times, twice to trim down the gigantic, fast growing trees the homeowner before me planted - once to remove half a tree that fell on my fence, and once to remove half a tree that fell on my neighbor's garage. (Yes, I have tree issues.) They do really decent work for a good price. I have two numbers - not sure which ones the best - 773-235-8004 or 847-384-9000.

  • We got our first estimate from County Tree Service, $950 for tree removal, and stump grinding (a few inches below grade).
Will get more estimates and update once we make a decision and how it went.

Fish tacos @Jeff Fest

Went to the fest tonight and was going to get some ribs but saw Gale St. is also slinging fish tacos and went that route instead and was not disappointed, they were really good and had some nice heat. I want to say it was 2 for $8 and 3 for $10. I'm not a beer drinker but they have a nice white wine sangria that was refreshing in the heat. It was a nice night, I went with friends from outside the neighborhood and they liked that the festival is more spread out, not crammed along a crowded street.

  • It was a fun fest. I like that you didn't have to pay extra once you were in for the little ones to go on the inflatables. I'd like maybe one or two more kids activities and/or have the inflatables not shut down so early. The drum circle was awesome:)

I understand that there was obviously something going on. However, there are streets with no children. I don't even know who to report this to! It's not like I can call the police and say, "hey, you were speeding through the park and through 100 or so kids."

They also used custom modified Hondas when HD no longer made the 3 wheelers. Regardless of their usage, these vehicles were never authorized to chase vehicles. The Dept then used Cushman vehicles, Honda 150 scooters, Polaris ATVs, now they just have bicycles because it's cost effective.

Construction Dumpster

Tonight around 10:15pm a large truck placed a construction debris dumpster on our street. I noticed because of the loud noise of the truck's motor and the crashing of the dumpster. I thought it was odd that it was placed so late on a Friday night. Then the same truck came to pick it up barely 20 minutes later. Anyone else see this truck/dumpster tonight? I was too tired and lazy to get info to call 311, but I'm curious about it.

Does anyone know anything about the Phoenix?

Hi,
I've seen that the old Stage Bar (before that Memories), at Montrose and Cicero, after disappearing for a few months and quietly reopening "under new management", is now open as the Phoenix. Does anyone know anything about it? I know there were some bands that used to come through the old place. I had high hopes that this might be a nice little live music joint in the neighborhood but I swear when I drove by the other night it looked like another tavern.

  • I was walking by so stopped in for a minute and talked to the manager, Jose. The place is spruced up quite a bit, and has a new jukebox and TVs. No draft beer at this point, just mainly domestic standards but he is looking to expand that. He says...

I was walking by so stopped in for a minute and talked to the manager, Jose. The place is spruced up quite a bit, and has a new jukebox and TVs. No draft beer at this point, just mainly domestic standards but he is looking to expand that. He says a few of the old regulars have stopped in but he would be happy to get some new regulars. I doubt that it's going to become the little live music joint a lot of us are looking for, but he seems open to ideas and some live entertainment, so feel free to stop in and make some suggestions.

Not a gay bar. We aren't so lucky. This bar may have been a drunk spot 10 years ago, but neighborhoods change. Wicker Park is nicer than it was 10 years ago and some are worse off. Maybe this will have a different type of crowd. I have "hipster" friends who love Sidekicks and none live in this area.

Spark is working the area again.

These people sure are persistent. As soon as he mentioned wanting to see my utility bills I had to practically slap him in the face with my No Soliciting sign (Of course they don't think they're selling anything. They're getting paid to copy down account numbers) and point a pepper spray at him before he finally got the message and left.

  • psmokeyz Smartphones ARE the zombie apocalypse

These are why I met them with such hostility. These aren't girl scouts selling cookies, they're con artists trying to steal personal information for nefarious purposes. You can't just slam the door and ignore criminals like this or they just keep coming back, trying to steal from you again and again. The only thing that gets through to them is to make them fear for their own safety. If that gives me a reputation among their ranks as that crazy old guy that's willing to hurt them, all the better.

  • Stephanie Young adult concerned about neighborhood issues.

They came to my house about a month ago, demanding to see my Comed bill. Since I'm not the account holder, I told them no. I really don't like answering the door for people because I've trained my dog to bark at intruders, etc. Then they had the audacity to tell...

Then I said "well i trained him to keep people like you away from my house" and slammed the door. They then decided it was a good idea to come back at 7 pm the same day. These guys just won't quit.

Cab recommendations?

Need a cab to the airport tomorrow. Will have an infant with us. Anyone recommend a good reliable company to call that services our area? Tried hailing one last time....that didn't work....

Uber doesn't "dispatch" taxi's. Using GPS - both from your smart phone and what is in the Taxi's car - you make a call out for a Taxi - the drivers can see where you live and if he is close - he takes the request and comes to your house immediately. Your credit card is stored in your Uber account (and the standard tip amt you want to give) and as a result there is no financial transaction that has to take place. They pick you up, you get in and out. No fuss. If you lived in Lincoln Park you wouldn't need to use this, but if you live in area that doesn't have a frequent taxi traffic, it's perfect.

  • My friend tried unsuccessfully to use Uber from PP last weekend. There were two available when she first checked, but when she went back to actually call one of 'em up, they were both gone. An hour blew by and still no Uber in the area. So if someone wants to make some extra cash, do that. Become a driver around the NW side. lol

local vet?

hi, wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good local vet near portage park? thanks!

  • Jan

i agree with LadyLord. I've been living in Portage Park for 10 years now and have always taken my felines to Cat Hospital of Chicago. Dr Currigan is a leader in feline geriatrics and all the vets and vet techs are incredible. 773-539-9080

@bethd: What type of animal(s) do you have? I agree with LadyLord and Jan about Cat Hospital after having our first visit with them. But maybe you have a dog?
