Tree removal from backyard

We have a large tree in our backyard that we want to remove. We have talked with our neighbor (since the tree leans into his property) and he agrees it is time for the tree to go.
Can anyone recommend someone to take the tree out. It is about 2 stories tall and a full canopy (would love to remove it before the leaves fall for the autumn).

Police in the Park

I understand that there was obviously something going on. However, there are streets with no children. I don't even know who to report this to! It's not like I can call the police and say, "hey, you were speeding through the park and through 100 or so kids."

I am all for the big police presence, don't get me wrong. But not at the expense of my kids' safety.

Construction Dumpster

Tonight around 10:15pm a large truck placed a construction debris dumpster on our street. I noticed because of the loud noise of the truck's motor and the crashing of the dumpster. I thought it was odd that it was placed so late on a Friday night. Then the same truck came to pick it up barely 20 minutes later. Anyone else see this truck/dumpster tonight? I was too tired and lazy to get info to call 311, but I'm curious about it.

  • there could have been an issue with the truck that it was unsafe to continue to haul the dumpster, so they probably dropped it, took the truck to another lit location to unbind the cable or make the repair to the truck and then return to pick it up.

  • Teachers should be paid well, within our means, if they teach well and generate results. With accountability comes respectability. However the union contract protects the bad and rewards both good and bad the same, based on factors that have little tie to actual performance, like years of service or certification. One can have a PhD and be an ineffective teacher. Please stop protecting the bad ones and seek incentives, based on actual performance. Let's bring hope back.

In Home Daycare

My wife & I are looking into licensed in home day cares in Portage Park. Does anybody have good suggestions? Thanks,

  • If anybody is looking for a great in home licensed daycare I'd call Ms. Edith Lopez.
She only takes a few kids at a time. Its a basement apt but w/lots of natural light, VERY clean, she's engaged with the children, cooks fresh meals, takes them for walks, etc.. She charges $200 a week. My son thrived there for a year until I had to switch due to my job schedule. Its perfect for 2 and under. Her number is: 773.706.0255. Located on Berenice in Portage Park.

Thanks for the info UrbanDweller. We heard of the home daycare, but we ultimately felt that it was too much for one lady to watch a few kids AND cook for them AND provide the proper amount of nurture. We DID choose Fairyland in the end because all of the teachers at the nursery school have a child education degree and are trained in child psychology. My 10 year old reads at a high school level, and my 3 year old can read at a kindergarten level. Can't wait to send my 13 month old once she is 16 months. The subsidy from the daycare action council makes it super affordable too. Home daycares are nice, but for us an actual daycare was an easy choice.

My car was stolen in front of my house

Beware if you reside in the Portage Park area. My car, a beige color, 1994 Cutlass Ciera was stolen right in front of my house. The last time I drove it was this past Monday.

I remember working for a pizza place a few years ago when one of the delivery drivers had their car stolen right in front our eyes. It was later found in a west side alley. I hate to say it, but I think you might have take a loss.

New pricing will begin in Sept 2014 meter read and based two-part blalanced energy plan which includes:
    1. a low fixed price of 5.299 cents/kWh and
    2. a monthly customer charge (now $19.99) which covers costs everyone in ComEd service territory pays regardless of supplies. Previously, the monthly customer charge was based on your rate class(S-F, M-F, or Watt Hour account). Beginning with your Sept 2013 meter read, your monthly customer charge (noted above) will be based on the annual electricity usage of your home/business.

Neighbor issue: residential fencing

We are having an strange problem with the home owner next door. A chain link fence marks the property boundary line, but it is technically the neighbor's fence (it faces out towards our yard). The neighbor is threatening to remove our fence gates, which are attached to her fence posts.
Can she do this? What are the residential fencing ordinances for Chicago?
Thanks for your input.

  • Liam F.

People can't even get along on here why would they get along in person?

  • A&K

We cleared our fence choice with the neighbors. It was easier to get approval before we changed anything. Exterior plans for the house down to the color was also cleared with the neighbors. Fortunately they all approved. It makes it easier. It would be nice if everyone was that easy going.

Ownership of the 6 corners shop will be transferred to the current manager of that shop (me.) However the other shop will be closed permanently.

Due to the usual legal stuff (leases, business licenses, etc.) there will be a gap between the closing the old store and opening the new one. I have been working on this since we were notified of the closings 7 weeks ago but this takes longer that you would expect.

I would like to thank the community for its support over the decades and I hope to see you back when we reopen.

See you soon,

Pool Cleaner

My wife and I just bought a house that came with a pool. I've been trying to keep up with the chemicals, cleaning etc., but I'm afraid I just don't know what I'm doing. It's only been just over a week since we bought the house, and the pool is already pretty bad. Ideally what I'd like is someone that will clean the pool a couple times and also show me how to do it. I'm having a hard time finding a company. Plenty of pool supply companies, but all the cleaning companies seem to be located way out in the burbs.

Where is Alderman Nicholas Sposato?

Why isn't Alderman Nicholas Sposato on everyblock for Ward 36? I know Tom for the 38th is (I Used to be in the 38th and we got remapped)

  • The biggest issue was the cut and hack of the 36th, then he jumps to the 38th (which is now MUCH larger). It is clear that favors are being done and once again, we are punished. I just hope the voters in the 38th are smart enough to see what it is and not reward this deceptive behavior.

  • Mike, I am in the 36th and voted for Alderman Sposato. I think he is a fine Alderman and would be thrilled if he is still my Alderman when my address is changed to the 38th. I will vote for him again if he runs.

Barking dogs

Thanks to the neighbors who had good suggestions. To those that pass judgement: I do not leave the dogs out day and night. I train them with treats and praise and bring them inside when they are barking . After 20 years, I now have crappy neighbors. Time move!

Resident20, if you really want to constructively engage your upset neighbor, you could pass out your contact info and solicit more detailed feedback about the barking, mentioning the police as the trigger. If you provide an email address and/or your user name of EveryBlock, they would be able to anonymously contact you, if that makes it easier for them (maybe even mention that in the distributed info). You may want to create new contact information for this just in case your upset neighbor is abusive. You can easily create a new email address from a number of sites and you can also use Google Voice to create a new phone number that you can forward to your existing one. Google Voice allows you to block incoming numbers just like you would block spam in your email. I have seen it recommended frequently for Craig's List sellers and my wife uses it to create a separate work number.

I would only recommend this if you really want the feedback and are willing to adjust your routine, if you just want to argue your case, its probably not going to be very productive and could end up escalating the issue into a feud.

Does anyone know anything about the Phoenix?

Hi,
I've seen that the old Stage Bar (before that Memories), at Montrose and Cicero, after disappearing for a few months and quietly reopening "under new management", is now open as the Phoenix. Does anyone know anything about it? I know there were some bands that used to come through the old place. I had high hopes that this might be a nice little live music joint in the neighborhood but I swear when I drove by the other night it looked like another tavern.

A/C recommendations

We're considering adding high velocity air to our bungalow. (We're hoping to avoid ductwork/visible units/etc - not very 1920's!) I've seen a number of threads here asking for recommendations for a/c installers, but none specifically addressing high velocity systems. Any recommendations for this specific type of A/C? If anyone has put this type in, have you been happy with the result?

  • I meant it is great.

  • I just checked with my dad who's an HVAC guy. He said that the cost in Chicago is abnormal due to the requirments of having to hire an architect and applying for all the special permits. Its a much more complex job then regular a/c install. Unfortunatly he couldn't even recomend a price on it as he doesn't do these installs (they take too much time, and he has too many clients) sorry, wish I was more help.

Stop signs optional?

I was walking the dog around portage park on Long Ave and couldn't help but notice the cars. A large majority of people don't even slow down at the stop sign. They pretend it doesn't exist and drive straight through. The rest seem to just tap the brakes. I am curious as to when the law changed that stop signs are optional. Especially given the amount of pedestrians surrounding the park.

Thank you all for your contributions. Some good and of course some bad. I appreciate the amount of responses in regards to this issue.

Minerva, stop signs are not working. I have to agree with you on that. The only positive I can see with them is that when run over they can cause some serious damage to your car.

Although a sign reminding drivers on Irving park or at other locations mentioned may seem small and unimportant it may lead to one life saved. At that point the sign that seemed so minor has become a value. How much is a life worth? I would like to think more than a sign. I understand it won't fix all of our problems. The tough ones are of course always the hardest to solve.

In terms of the stop sign at long and Warner. The optional stop sign that is. That will be a big challenge to solve. Minerva has it right, how many people should die before a problem is fixed. Maybe the city has a number for that. Then we know once that number of families loose a loved one we can get some help.

So that leaves a question for our city officials. How comfortable are you letting your children and grandchildren, spouses etc cross at the intersections everyone here mentioned. Knowing that drivers don't stop at long and Warner when will your family be passing through? Never?

This all may seem dramatic but it's reality. Sad.

  • Our Irving Woods Neighborhood, part of Dunning Neighborhood, already has a record of numerous accidents. Yet, our requests for working safety improvements are still up in the air, which is mind-boggling. Nevertheless, our plea has been documented on-line, and if this accident trend continues, then we might be setting ourselves up for another city/state lawsuit, just like it happened with the dead ash tree falling case, March 2014, resulting in almost $6 million dollar settlement.

Dog Heroes and Villains

In another post a neighbor asked 'Don't all dogs bark?'

My mind first went to Old Yeller then to Call of the Wild and is now thinking about Huckleberry Hound and another cartoon dog named Dasterdly iirc.

Where is your mind?

I also try to remember if a dog cannot bark his first line of defense may be a bite.

  • It is the owners, period. Yappy little dogs are like that because the owners hug them and whisper "sshhh" to them. Or a dog barks at the mailman ... guess what? the mailman leaves, reinforcing the dog for barking. Etc.

My last dog, a black lab/chow mix, NEVER barked. Even if I tried to actually teach him to "speak" for a treat, it was like pulling teeth. Not just because of this point, he was an amazing, outstanding, wonderful dog. Best dog I've ever had in my life. Back to the barking point: Later in his life, he growled at a contractor who was giving my wife his cell phone (long story, she knew the guy's daughter), and I didn't even recognize it until he did it a second time...I thought it was some noise outside. :)

Our current dog is a black lab/beagle mix, and he's more vocal, but he's more of an "alert" barker...if he hears something odd, he'll give an alert bark for me. But then he's all submissive because he thinks he's not "supposed" to bark. I'm trying to teach him that alert barking is very, very good and what we need. He's getting it, slowly but surely.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-red-light-camera-ticket-spikes-met-20140717,0,704793.story?page=2&r=3559B8982134H2X

I sure can't wait to see when the speed cameras start to "malfunction"...

  • It's disgusting, an abuse, and why I didn't want these speed cameras installed either.

  • Then it is our, voters', responsibility to make this a point of the elections. The only way this will change is to make the politicians scared of being voted out unless they bring them down. Politicians know that people are fickle and that they change on to the next topic soon enough.

Kittens

Would anyone like a free kitten? There is a litter of kittens in my back yard and I am looking for good homes for them. I think they are about four weeks old at present. Let me know if interested.

  • Tamaki Doula, Aspiring Midwife, Mama

Hi Laurie, I just emailed you! I could foster and care for them. :)

  • Tamaki, I believe this was a troll post with imaginary kittens. A few of us offered help. No communication forthcoming.

Good Afternoon Partners,

In an effort to ensure that all of our youth are college and career ready, CPS has launched an initiative to help out-of-school high school students re-enroll in school. To that end, we opened 3 Student Outreach And Re-Engagement Centers (SOAR Centers). The SOAR Centers are located in Roseland, Little Village and Garfield Park.

We will be holding an open house to provide more detail regarding the new SOAR Centers on Thursday July 24, 2014 at the JLM Center at 2622 W. Jackson, Chicago, IL 60612 at 9 a.m.

You can make a referral to the SOAR Center by simply sending us an email at SOAR@CPS.EDU. We will reach out to the student as soon as possible and offer the following services:

· Develop a re-enrollment plan and a graduation plan for each student.
· Assist the student with selecting and enrolling in a school that best fits his or her needs.
· Assist students with developing strategies to overcome issues that have kept them from succeeding in school.
· Develop an individual success plan that maps out academic, behavior and attendance goals for each student.
· Provide online credit recovery for students for whom we are unable to provide immediate school placement.
· Provide opportunities for students to earn service learning hours.

Please join us on Thursday July 24, 2014 for more information. If you are able to attend, please RSVP to ssmith114@cps.edu. If you have any questions regarding the SOAR Centers or would like to receive SOAR marketing materials, please call Sean Smith the SOAR Manager at (773)710-7329.

Two Men and a Truck? Any reccomendations?

I need to move a couple of large pieces of furniture from my Mom's condo in Lincolnwood to my condo in Portage Park. Specifically, a chair-and-a-half, an ottoman, a floor lamp, and a small wood trunk.
Any recommendations for a company you've used and have been happy with?

Thanks in advance.

Best Pedicure in Portage Park

Can anyone recommend a great pedicure place in Portage or Jefferson Park?

Thanks.

  • christyr20 Northwest sider

Love Rosie at Rose nails, but be prepared to wait even if you have an appointment. I don't have that kind of time. I like Taryn Nails in the strip mall on Harlem where Gunnison cuts off.

  • DickinsonParker 20 years in Portage Park and loving it.

Kasia at XOX Salon is great. The pedicure lasts longer than other salons I've gone to.

Hello neighbors! Since I've started seeing back-to-school ads making the rounds, I thought I would let you all know that I have some availabilities for math tutoring (K-6) for the remainder of the summer and the fall semester. I am a licensed Illinois teacher with extensive experience both teaching and developing elementary math curriculum at a variety of grade levels. I currently work as an elementary math curriculum developer at the University of Chicago. I live right next to Portage Park Elementary and will tutor in my home. I have 1/2 hour and hour sessions, and I can either offer homework help, remediation, or enrichment, depending on your child's needs. I have also done group tutoring for children in the same grade level/class. I have even offered family sessions for parents who want to better understand their child's homework! Whether they just need a little extra help or a challenge to help them deepen their mathematical understanding and excel further, I can design a program that will help your child succeed.
Please contact me for rates and availability. Have a great day!

  • Wow. I cant believe nobody commented. With the trouble our youth is having with simple mathematics, im really surprised nobody is taking you up on this.

  • LadyLord Portage Park citizen

Black N White, thanks - I don't take offense! :) It's mid-summer, so I'm sure no one wants to think about school yet - probably math least of all. I just want the neighborhood to know I'm available if anyone should need the extra help when school starts up.

  • JMC Six Corners/Old Irving Park resident.

Terrific, great to know! We may like to pursue some reinforcement/ enrichment tutoring before school resumes for our 3rd grader. Do you do weekend mornings? Please direct msg me with further info. Thanks.

Missed homeowner exemption, any recourse?

I was a few days late applying for my homeowners' exemption and it looks like they didn't apply it to this tax bill. The assessor's office phone is just a busy signal (yes, this is the year 2014). Anybody go through this recently? Can I just bring the proper paperwork to a branch office and get it sorted out?

  • Jean-Pierre

This year's taxes are for last year.

  • Chris, I think you have to wait till you've lived there a calendar year.

Everytime we hear someone laying on their horn for no reason we know we are in Chicago which after all is the Windy City and folks in cars do not get to talk to each other so they have to honk their horns.

We need to be sure and include these folks as well for their slice of the consultants fees:

    http://nimue-new.cyberstreet.com/amta1/

And instead of F150s the rule will be everyone must drive one of these to work on one day and find a place to park it with no carpooling allowed either. MadMax and Thunderdome rules.

The last time I had an impatient jerkasaurus behind me honkin' off it was kid (looked to be about 14) in his mommy's soccer van. He must have been anxious to get to his drug buy. Lucky for me, we were on side streets where he would not have any opportunity to pass me so I cruised along at about 3 mph to give him plenty of time to text his dealer. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
