My front porch is cracking pretty bad and this past winter just killed it. I don't know if it can be repaired of if the whole porch has to come down. The bricks in front of my house are crumbling and turning black. Also the foundation in the front needs to be waterproofed with that black tar. It's not a huge job but it's too much for us to do ourselves.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! I live across the street from Merrimac Park.

Thanks!

Abandoned Van???

What do I do when a van has been parked (abandoned) in front of my house for over a month? I called 311 and they said they would come and look at it but never did. This is not only an eye soar, it is rather suspicious. None of my neighbors know who left it there or who it may belong to. So many leaves have collected around this giant van...what do I do? I'd like to park in front of my own house again at some point.

  • Jan

nothing says "abandoned" like a couple of flat tires... on the street side. just sayin'

  • Awwww, if you *must* flatten tires, don't damage them; just let the air out. If that van is stolen, its owner is going to have enough to deal with, without having to buy new tires.

These Gas Meters Are an Eyesore

Has anyone noticed the new gas meters being installed on side streets in front of multi-unit buildings? They are installing them on the face brick, right in front of the buildings. It looks horrible. There is a beautiful condo building on Roscoe just east of Cicero that now has about 20 meters in front of it, stacked 3 high. It looks horrible. Also, they did the same thing to a building on Laramie, between Addison and Belmont. This should be illegal.

Has anyone received a *credible* response from Peoples Gas re: partially finished sidewalk work?

This is related to the new gas meter installations. Supposedly, my concerns get documented by Peoples Gas, but I'm told that the scheduling of work/the work itself are through contractors. What are we supposed to do when shoveling snow... work around the half-finished cement work, broken pieces of cement and rocks? I'm pretty sure that the trash collectors aren't going to haul away the broken pieces of cement -- and I don't expect them to do so.

Perhaps I'm just being impatient, and it takes longer than I would expect to fix some of these "errors"... it's only been 2+ weeks; maybe that's normal?

Some camps provide an incentive for signing up earlier like the opportunity to break up the payment into installments or getting some upfront discount. However, many quality camps are far away from home and we often wonder why?

Some high schools have realized that offering their space for summer camps is a win-win for all the parties involved. Resurrection H.S. offers a hugely attended Camp Invention. DePaul College Prep, previously known as Gordon Tech, offers Green Apple Campus. Whether these schools charge for summer freed-up space or not, the camps can act as their marketing tool and buildup their good neighbor image. The program providers get both transactional and relational rewards. And, the local families benefit in a number of ways, like the nearby location, hopefully the neighborhood-adjusted-cost and get acquainted with the local educational providers.

During my recent conversation with Intrinsic Schools, based on my own experience with the CPS programming and from reading about ACT testing and beyond, I realized that our children are greatly in need of writing workshops, not just a stronger STEAM focus, which rightfully gets lots of attention due to its own merits. Since writing is not being tested on standardized tests, I found that it is not the focal point of the school experience.

I hope that our community leaders will find ways to fill this writing void with companies like 826CHI and will address other well-known educational needs by leveraging their relationships and other resources.

I was wondering if anyone has an extra ticket to the President's speech at the Copernicus Center this afternoon? Suspicious behavior at 5700 block of Pensacola?

A while ago, a neighbor shared with me that six squad cars came up to a house, entered it and left with a person and some materials. Since then, there's been an uptick in traffic to and from this house at all hours of the night. Neighbors are afraid to call anything in in fear of somehow getting found out and having some retribution come their way. What should we do?

If I am hearing you right you are thinking the dust ups between the progressives and the mayor are costing some of us better city services. I have had this feeling but yet see that we are rocking along nicely and getting more than our share of asphalt. I think we could get more organized on exactly what we want in the next 50 to 100 years in the way of populations and the support services for those populations. Will we have all economic stratas and ages therefore all services from family planning to perpetual care? Will we strive to be one economic strata? Will we seek to have a working class and an owner class? Will we seek renters and owners as we do now? Will we want employees to serve a few economically advantaged? Will we encourage cooperatives?

Has the mayor angered the President so he chose to support the 45th? Certainly if the mayor really had it in for us there would be a doormat ward with a center for ethnic cohesion other than ours he could have offered up.

Brick and Mortar Doctor Needed

On the side of our house there are a number of bricks in the middle of the wall that are flaking and deteriorating. I've had it cleaned and sealed when it happened before. However, the deterioration continues. I'm told that somehow water is getting behind the bricks to cause this damage. My concern is that this will continue with more of the brick flaking off.

Can someone here recommend someone who is skilled with this type of repair?

Thank you.

What’s Everyblock’s take on MCM Pub over on Cicero? I haven’t been in there in probably 5-6 years but seeing Six Corners Association’s pic of their outdoor seating has me intrigued. Last time I was there I was checking out the liquor store and wasn't impressed with the beer selection and when I poked my head into the bar it looked kind of rundown and uninviting.

They don’t have a website but looking at their Facebook page, it appears they’ve remodeled the place since last I was in there. What’s the food like? No menu on FB, but looks like they’ve got some decent yet random specials. What’s their tap list like? They’re not on beermenus so I'm concerned it’s the type of place that considers Blue Moon or Shocktop “craft” beer. On the plus side, in addition to their outdoor seating, they’re a shorter walk then Hops & Barley for me and I’d pass Josi’s on the way home, so they've got my curiosity.

So what’s the verdict – worthy of my attention for dinner & drinks or should I pass?

  • Thought I would give an updated review on this place after having a nice time there last night. We stopped in for a nightcap after eating at Six Corners Bistro, and the place was hoppin'. I'm not usually a big fan of karaoke, but in this case, everyone was very talented, so it was free entertainment in the hood. Everyone was friendly and they had a decent selection of beer, including a couple of Revolution options. It's probably all about timing with this place, but we would go back.

  • I've been there a few times just on a whim. Have eaten there on a couple occasions. The food is good and not too pricey. Typical bar food. It's a shot and beer bar...not some snooty yuppie bar. A lot of regulars who can carry a tune for karaoke. Real people. I always had a great time when I've been in!

I also realized that either we service the families all over Chicago, not just those in the selected neighborhoods, like those found in downtown area or Lincoln Park, or we risk losing them to the suburbs or other cities. It is certainly our decision, actively decided or arrived at by default, as to what our mission and the grand plan will be. 38th Ward - Lawn a disaster after infrastructure improvements

City finished up with my street last week and our curbside lawn is a disaster with extra dirt and a random small boulder (too heavy for me to lift). Frustrating as we spent $$$ for new sod last year. Does anyone know if we can request a fix or retribution? TIA

  • Helen R Portage Park resident since 1983

The gas company did restore my parkway also, and you're right, they may wait till spring.

  • I'm hoping they come back and fix everything--even the concrete sidewalks. I noticed that the edges of the non-slip squares are sticking up on a lot of the crosswalks. If they're doing that now, my guess is they're going to get a lot worse with time.

I'm hoping that the cold weather caught them off guard and that they'll be back in the Spring.

Agree: The output is as good as the inputs: teachers, students, parents and the environment. For few years I have watched our CPS school level off my child's knowledge for their convenience sake, which understandably is an issue. Annually, I requested "pretest and then teach", which was ignored year after year. I understand now that it does take a village to raise a child and I hope we will all get involved to generate a better outcome for all.

Lastly, please remember that supporting teachers does not exactly equate with supporting children. Yes, they share the environment and resources, which continues to be inadequate for most of the northwest side, except for Ward 41/Mary O'Connor, which secured about $74 million for their schools since 2011. But, each party has a different ultimate goal, job protection/increasing rewards vs. successful knowledge and skill acquisition.

Let's develop GROW45, to mimics GROW47 established by Ward 47th Alderman Ameya Pawar. If schools thrive, the communities will thrive, too.

While owning Congress, there were cases of underage serving, security confiscating drugs and then reselling them, paid private ambulances on call for certain shows so "situations" wouldn't make news or stats, a brawl at a Keef show that brought 20 officers to the premises, code violations severe enough that entertainment license suspended, and accusations of slumlord to the tenants renting. Though I am happy to hear Portage has been run smoother, and hope to see this continue, I would not consider the management to be competent.

1 can (15 oz.) black beans or red kidney beans, rinsed and drained (or 1.5 cups home cooked)
    1 cup cooked brown rice
    1/2 cup chopped carrots
    1/2 cup chopped celery
    1 medium onion, chopped
    1 clove garlic, minced
3-1/2 cups marinara sauce or meatless spaghetti sauce (jarred or home cooked)
    1/3 cup raisins
    3 TB lemon juice
Remove 8 large outer leaves from head of cabbage. In a Dutch oven cook cabbage leaves in boiling water for 4 to 5 minutes or just until leaves are limp. Drain cabbage leaves. Trim the thick rib in center of each leaf. Set leaves aside. Shred 4 cups of the remaining cabbage; place shredded cabbage in a 3-1/2 to 6 quart crock pot. In medium bowl combine beans, cooked rice, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and 1/2 cup of the marinara sauce. Divide bean mixture evenly among the 8 cabbage leaves, using about 1/3 cup per leaf.
