They then said to find out more to tune in on "Monday?" Not sure if was for the Noon Business Hour, or perhaps a teaser for Channel 2 evening news, which is also owned by WBBM. I know some new business are coming to six corners, but none that would be news worthy on a city level. Does anyone know anymore about this?

PetSmart joining the Six Corners Family

PetSmart has announced that they will be joining the Six Corners family and occupy the lifesource space in the Marketplace Plaza!

With so many pet-owners in our community this will be a great addition to our neighborhood.

Little by little, day by day, we are seeing great strides in the 45thWard. This development will help continue to lay the foundation for strong sustainable development in Chicago's Northwest Corridor.

Any dog, if taught to be vicious will be vicious. . Once an irrational person spends time with these dogs, they realize that they are not only some of the smartest, but also the most loyal and trusting dogs around, which is what makes them an easy target for people who wish to do ill. Many of the Vick dogs that were taken out of the some of the worst scenarios ever, were evaluated and ended up being therapy dogs, visiting sick kids, old folks homes etc. Ignorance is the problem, not Pit Bulls!!

This winter was one of the coldest and snowiest on record in Chicago. As anyone who drives or takes a bus knows, the brutal weather took a heavy toll on our city streets.

The number of potholes across the city has been staggering. Filling them has been a huge challenge due to the cold spring. Because of the cold weather, crews have been using a cold patch which does not hold as well. In some places, crews have had to refill the same hole half a dozen times.

So far this year, crews have responded to almost 800 pothole reports in the 45th Ward. Almost all of those reports involve filling up to 20 potholes per stop.

There are still many potholes that need filling, but the good news is that, with the approach of spring, asphalt plants are opening. Crews will be able to use an asphalt hot patch which lasts much longer than the cold patch.

Additionally, the city will repave Central Avenue from Montrose to Higgins, and other paving projects are in the planning stages. Last year, CDOT repaved Nagle, Higgins, and Laramie, and IDOT repaved Foster.

If you have experienced and vehicle damage due to a pothole, please file a claim with the city.

Why is our Blue Bin not being Emptied?

We moved in to our house (by Narraganset and Montrose) at the end of February and there wasn't a blue bin when we first moved in. We requested one and have been using it but they don't always empty it when they get the others. Anyone know why they skip us? I was going to file a complaint but maybe we're doing something wrong?

  • I live in a condo and we don't have blue bins because we pay for garbage.

I'm not going out of my way to recycle. Not enough time in the day.

Speaking of garbage collection, is it time to save this city some cash and privatize it like they did with the recycle cans?

  • Me

well I understand if you don't have the proper receptacles for recycling. and even if you did, it doesn't take up time LOL when I go to Mariano's I ask for paper, I use that bag for my recycle items and once it's filled I throw it in my blue bin.

Flips on Montrose and Austin

Does anybody know if Flips food is any good. Been around since 1997 and have never tried it. I never see anyone in there.

    Broilers? http://www.broilersflip.com

I tried it a few times and it was just so-so. Never gave me much reason to go back. Mr Zee's is similar but much better.

Anybody know if the legend of the sign/name is true? I hear that the word "flip" was written on the drawing, only to indicate that the word "Broilers" and artwork was supposed to repeat on the other side of the building, and the neon guy added the extra word to the sign.

  • We get take out there maybe a few times a year, it's nothing to get excited about, but not horrible. I've never found the owner (the guy that is there all the time anyway) to be very welcoming or friendly. If he would at least smile, I would feel much better about eating there.

Should Both the Portage and Patio go to Pot?

Check out this story at DNAInfo about the Patio Theater: http://dnain.fo/1jIwlEZ

If you read nothing else in the article take note of this:

"Carranza's track record at the Portage, which he abruptly shut down 11 months ago, and the Congress, which was shuttered after city officials yanked Carranza's liquor license and declared it unsafe because of building code violations."

Is this the type of business owner we want in our community?

It was a silent Charlie Chaplin movie with a live 40 piece orchestra for photo-play accompaniment. Even though I used to enjoy seeing new movies at the Patio, it didn't work for the theater. Most people wait for new moves to come out on Red Box or the teenagers have a way to see them free on their computers and phones. Special shows like last Friday and events similar to what the Portage Theater used to do will make the Patio Theater a successful venue again.

Legno...Best Restaurant in the Area??

Let's just say it's in my top 3. My wife and I stopped by for a last minute dinner date on Saturday Night and it ended up being one of the best nights we have had in a while. The atmosphere is nice, quiet and welcoming in the back and up front its more up beat in the bar area.

The food was legitimately amazing Italian fare. The waiter knew every detail of the menu items. The bartender is an expert mixologist. The host was very nice and accommodating....and the live entertainment, Stolie, was awesome. She'll be back April 25th, I highly recommend stopping in for the night...We will be there!!!!

  • JJ Old Irving Park

Went there last weekend, place was nice, live music was good, but the food wasn't anything to write home about. Bread= horrible for a quality restaurant, basically like the frozen garlic bread you get at jewel, Calamari Fritti= not bad, but nothing extraordinary, Seafood risotto= yucky, crispy pork shoulder= pretty tasty. We'll give it another visit to try the pizzas, but definitely wouldn't call it the best in the area.

  • I went there and they make such a big fuzz about their oven and all that. I try their pizza, which is supposed to be amazing but, honestly, it lacks seasoning and there is nothing impressive about it.Just the regular pizza that you could get anywhere else The service was great though.

Local Electrician with Bungalow experience

I recently purchased a new ceiling light fixture and upon removing the old light fixture I was faced with very old electrical wiring (1920s bungalow) and a fixture that doesn't fit correctly with my ceiling mount. This has turned into a project beyond my capabilities. Anyone have a recommendation for a fair priced electrician with old bungalow experience?

Cancelling Xsport Membership

I have a membership that I no longer use. I have fulfilled the terms of their contract so it isn't like I still owe them time or money. I looked at their website to see what I would need to cancel, and it says that I have to send a certified letter to their headquarters requesting the cancellation. Is this really what happens? It seems like such a pain! Has anyone had to do this? Am I not able to walk over there and have it done?

  • Debra M. Resident LaCrosse and Montrose

It is EXACTLY like Arnie said: requiring snail mail cancellation is a device designed to make more money by making unreasonable demands to cancel. The people that felt the letter-writing is non-intrusive: great. I make use of technology and expect the ability to conduct business electronically. As others in this thread indicated, I will not do business with any health facility that cannot conduct all normal billing and cancellation via their website.

  • I did not send a certified letter and they still cancelled my membership. The address I sent it to is Capital Fitness, P.O. Box 4012, Aurora, IL 60507. Just stated that I wanted to cancel my membership and I included my key tag number.

Mycorrhizal fungi for a tree

That is, I am looking for mycorrhizal fungi for a bare root tree I am planting.

I thought I had it but apparently no. And a bare root fruit tree arrived today in the mail. I need to plant it tomorrow or in the next 2 days, I don't want to wait any longer than that.

Previously I bought the mycorrhizal fungi online. Given the time constriction I need to find it here in Chicago.

Hence a question to my dear neighbors: is there a local store that carries mycorrhizal fungi for planting bare root trees?

Help will be appreciated very much. (Maybe even in fruit, if the tree survives and grows some :))

Thank you for help!

  • Happy Arbor Day, Allexa and a nice day for planting.

  • I planted the last one yesterday. It was fun. Now time to sit and wait for the first blooms. :)

    Thanks!

P.S.: I ended up buying mycorrhizal fungi in Chicago Roots Hydrophonics and Organics. Much closer than Pesche and when called they said they had it. I was very impressed with the store. Hopefully it will work well.

Personally, I have a street light on my block that is dim, candlelight dim, going on 3 years now. The entire row of lights on 5300 Barry Ave is not at full strength. Now here's the catch. The north side of Barry is Alderman Reboyas, the south side is Suarez. Two different alderman on one street is ridiculous, but I digress. My neighbors and I have called both aldermen multiple times. Suarez's office personnel says it's "not his ward". Reboyas sends someone out, but never with the directions I have given them. I have explained clearly that the light isn't burned out, it's DIM, a fuse has blown or something, but the lamp has electricity. This dim light is effecting the block of lights. S&S comes out, tests the pole to see if it's live and then leaves. No one gets to the root of the problem. We don't know who to turn to anymore and have actually given up contacting the city. Calling 311 doesn't work, neither does reporting it via the internet. Can you please give me some direction here. I'd appreciate a name of someone or an email of who I may contact. We need light. I'm tired of keeping my porch light on every night increasing my electric bill because our aldermen won't do their job and fix the lights here. Thanks for listening.

Annie, as you can see the street light has finally been fixed. We owe thanks to Alderman Cullerton for contacting both of the aldermen to explain how bad the lighting was here. Within 2 days, the light was fixed. Thanks to everyone for getting Barry and Lockwood out of the dark.

60641 mail delivery to be discussed at OIPA meeting tomorrow

From their email :

-a rep from Cong. Quigley's office will speak at our OIPA meeting tomorrow about what's going on to fix the abysmal mail delivery in 60641. He will also compile concerns about the Cicero Ave. Irving Park post office.

Monday, April 14, 7 PM, Irving Park Baptist Church, 4401 W. Irving Park at Kostner. Free, all welcome. Hope to see you there!

  • Update: Just got the phone with Cody. As stated, he is just the messenger, but I was able to give him the experience (And tracking numbers and dates) of the poor mail service in 60634. I encourage others to do so as well (he told me 60634 came in second to 60641 (so with as bad as ours was, if yours was worse, wow!)).

  • C Ped Suburban Irving Park Transplant

Our service had been spotty (late delivery, skipped days) but I just chalked it up to limited personnel and extreme temperatures.

Last night though my husband spotted bundles of mail (rubber banded bundles) on the ground outside our apartment building!! What the hell? Luckily my husband caught it and brought it inside, but lord knows how long it was outside or if some had already been stolen. What if it rained?! We're pretty furious, as you can imagine!

Cars speeding down McVicker

Ok so this is not the first time this happens. Last night I came home and I was helping my pregnant wife unload groceries from our car in front of our house. Ok so this is not the first time this happens. Last night I came home and I was helping my pregnant wife unload groceries from our car in front of our house. The next thing I know there's 2 cars chasing each other heading north on McVicker from Irving Park. So I immediately pulled her back from the street. As they fly past us I yell at them to slow down. A minute later here they come again!!! They turned on Mcvicker flying down the street, they do not slow down getting to Bell Plaine instead they just go faster. Finally when they get to Berteau they stop at that stop sign!!!! So they do not make a stop until 2 full long blocks later (on Mcvicker from Irving Pk. all the way to Bertau). Cars that are on Belle Plaine turning north on Mcvicker do not have a stop sign either. So guess what I'm trying to ask here is does anyone know how to get some stop signs or speed humps on Mcvicker and Bell Plaine? We moved into this beautiful neighborhood in 2009 from the "ghetto" there when cars used to come flying down the street like that, people used to throw bottles at them and break their windows to teach them a lesson. I would hate for this to ever happen in Portage Park. Summer is coming and kids will be kids, they will run across the street without looking and I would hate for a tragedy to ever happen to any my neighbors just because of a negligent driver(s).......

I'm sorry, but this time I led this astray, This all started with a close call for a pregnant woman that sounds like it could have been in front of my house, for this I am sorry, but I lived here over 25 years and found traffic on mcvicker to be a problem. my daughter grew up on this street and now my granddaughter and I am not afraid.

  • If you speed in harwood heights, you would say police detour speeding.
