Garrido or Arena?

Garrido or Arena
lease give an educated fact based answer, not just bash the candidates.

  • The ward for 2015 is now much different than just Milwaukee ave. it's extended way into Old Irving Park now too. It's weird being at Elson and Irving and that's still Ward 45.

  • Harry Lee Six Corners

I don't agree with how Arena has handled everything (Cermak, Portage Theater, etc.) but the stuff that I do like (pedestrian designation for Jeff Park, proposed road diet for Milwaukee Ave) make him a more attractive candidate at this point. I'm definitely not voting for Garrido, but would like to know more about Baert before deciding.

Raking Leaves... Into the street

Curious if anyone has an opinion to this:

Is it considered appropriate to rake the leaves from my yard into the street during street sweeping?

  • BethNWSide Working mom in a Jeff Park family of 4

As I said Tami, I'd like to think the best of folks, but this was a pretty clear case of raking into the street. Their yard was devoid of leaves, the street/curb had a long row/pile of leaves. It wasn't a case of a few leaves blowing there and then not being able to rake them up due to a car being present.

  • I apologize, you're both absolutely right. I just looked. If there are cars parked 24/7, leaves won't fall underneath them. The street is clean where they are, my bad or my paranoia!

The job our police do is not an easy one. Some of their own brothers and their leader do not make it easier when they ignore the humanity of those they serve.
Yes their are other issues but all of us and especially our youth need a return to being able to trust and not fear those who are supposed to be our protectors. A few neighbors drinking and making too much noise in the parklet should not put me in fear that the police will show up and put their hands on me. The balance of actual justified shootings and government sanctioned thuggery must be rightly divided.

I think MyGopher is missing an opportunity here and Instacart could be piece to make it happen. The array of grocers though would be next to impossible to coordinate. MyGopher was originally presented to me as a service that would shop local stores for any item I asked for in stock at sale prices for delivery or pick up. Delivery was free with a prescription delivery or seven dollars otherwise. The UX, UI, search options and back end never got digitized though and the service only worked well when I emailed a list of stores, items, prices and quantities to one very conscientious sales person who was trying to make the model work. If Kmart had an item they subbed in that item at the other stores price and the idea was they would eventually have a warehouse with the other stores items. We certainly have the spaces in Chicago to make this happen if the other stores were on board but giving up loss leaders, bait and switch and pricing obfuscations is not on many retailers to do list.

Looking for antique clock repair

I have a small Ansonia clock that I need to repair. The clock needs a small repair but cleaning and oiling it would also be needed...

Can anyone recommend a good repair shop that can deal with antique clocks properly? And not in untimely manner? I understand that parts might be hard to get, but I just don't want it to sit forgotten on a shelf somewhere for 6 months, like it happened with another clock I took for repairs once...

  • Kapel Local Resident

Yes, I've been to Father Time a few times. They aren't cheap, but they get it done right. Also Chicago Clock Company is pretty reputable too but they aren't local to the area. There used to be a shop on Belmont called Raven Clock that did good work for very reasonable prices, but I think they moved to Elk Grove Village and now I think they go by a different name, it might be worth researching though.

  • I third Father Time on Belmont in the Roscoe Village Area.. They know what they are doing. Been there a long time too.

Someone above mentioned Tony’s on Elston south of Montrose and I will second that. Their produce selection is great in general and the variety of other foods is good too (booze is pricey though). I’m on the fence about the whole GMOs vs. buying organic thing especially because a whole lot gets dumped into that one GMO category when there is no real harm to some of it and “organic” labels can be a bunch of marketing hooey. When it comes down to it, I’m way more concerned about what irresponsible factory farming with certain GMOs is doing environmentally than I am about what eating it is doing to my body. I definitely taste the difference with some things, though.

Of the two most well-known harmful spiders in Illinois, the black widow and the brown recluse, only the black widow occurs in the Chicago area. And the one in the photo is definitely not a widow.

We had self described "hipsters" move into our condo building. Surfing on the net one night, I ran to my window after hearing a woman scream. No it wasn't an attack, just my semi-clad neighbors getting down on the courtyard lawn. Miss Hipster started screaming after the automatic sprinklers ruined their romantic encounter. The couple had parties nearly every weekend that lasted into the wee hours of the night. Since they have a first floor unit, their "guests" were smoking on the balcony and jumping over the rails to enter and exit. The behavior was obnoxious, swearing, shouting and all kinds of drunken drama. Asking them politely to keep it down was met with obscenities.

We have 30 units in our building and they were the only unit creating a noise problem. Neighbors with bedrooms facing the courtyard started calling the police. The condo management was called by several people as well. Things have been quiet recently on the Hipster front.

Bottom line, no you don't have the right to disturb your neighbors all night on the weekends. Many people work on the weekends. Some people like getting up early on their days off to enjoy their morning time. There are people who still get up and go to church on Sunday morning. Children in the neighborhood need their sleep and have activities planned on weekend mornings as well. The world does NOT revolve around drunks and fools.

  • That1Guy - I figured out there were two different parties going on that night. The folks I was noting that were walking down Monitor shouting obscenities were headed south. The other party, the one you described, was the other party. The 12:30am wake up call seems like no big deal now :)

CTA Bomb Screening on Blue Line Starting Next Month

What do you think about the CTA having the Chicago Police Department screen random passengers before they board the train? They said every tenth rider will be asked voluntarily for their bags to be tested with a swab, but not opened. If you refuse you will not be allowed onto the train. If you still try to board the train, you will be subject to arrest.

  • We could save money if we stopped assigning a beat car to circle one block third shift in a gang infested area. They get paid time and a half too so, it’s close to 1K a night per car. Then multiply that by how many cops they have assigned to the beat. 10-20 cars? Then multiply that by 365 days. And that’s just one gang infested neighborhood, I’m sure there are tons. The cops can’t cover more ground? Like, perhaps, two blocks? It’s absolutely stunning how they spend taxpayer money.

yes, it is sad that the trees were removed, but better to remove them now as opposed to a dead tree collapsing in the middle of winter and possibly injuring someone walking to a bus stop.

As you have likely heard, the Mayor this week unveiled his proposed 2015 city budget. My staff and I will spend the next several weeks reviewing the 800-page, $8.9 billion budget with a critical eye, as I have in years past.

There are some positive items in this proposed budget: money for more pothole fillers, tree trimmers, and rodent control crews; more police trained to patrol on bicycle; and more support for homeless veterans and families. This budget also does not contain any property tax rate increase.

However, this budget also does nothing to address the looming $550 million pension payment that the state legislature has mandated must be paid to police and fire pension systems by 2016.

I welcome your input and ideas on how we craft a budget that reflects our values as a city. Take a look at the budget, and offer your ideas by emailing my office. ward45@cityofchicago.org

Road tear up?

What is going on with all the roads suddenly being torn up (on central, AGAIN?!)? Going from Central to 6 corners on Irving, I think only 2 cross streets were not torn up, Addision is torn up as well (I am sure others can expand this list, but nonetheless).
When are they going to be done with this latest mess of road "repair"? (I know, too much common sense to say to fix a road before you tear up all the others)

  • M F

Somehow Rahm Emanuel SUDDENLY found money to pave the roads just a few weeks before election time. Go figure, they should of been hard at work all summer long. Pathetic really. And the planning of it all? Horrible! I watched them tear up a street and repave it all nice only to have Peoples Gas come and tear up 20% of the road the next 4 days. Now its half paved, half gravel and concrete and quite a mess. Chicago couldn't plan a birthday party properly much less infrastructure construction.

Who/when/how much do you tip for work?

For example...

1. Removal of old/delivery and installation of new microwave from a regional appliance store. I tipped $20 per guy because they had to deal with navigating between moving boxes (I thought they'd want to come in through back door not through the front) and a dog barking/growling two rooms away. Sort of hazard pay.

2. Friend of a friend who owns a company and painted very hard to reach areas in closets. I knew his usual time rate and appreciated that he and one of his crew members did the work on a Saturday, so I "tipped" the difference between the rate he told me and his usual rate.

I didn't tip:

1. Garage door opener installation (purchased the garage door opener and paid for the installation from a major retailer). It took the installer app. 20 minutes. Should I have tipped him?

2. Water meter installation. I decided to get the "voluntary" water meter. Was I supposed to tip the two guys who installed it?

Things that I maybe should plan to tip for in the future:

1. The person who installs the new gas meter (from moving it from the inside to the outside).
2. The person who installs the tiles on the bathroom floor.
3. The person who installs a new bathroom window.

I'm used to T&M. I'm not used to T&M+tip. I'm just trying to understand the "typical" practices so that I can budget.

I saw this coming a long time ago. When I was hired by the state of Illinois back in 1989, a counselor went over the pension plan with me. I could see then it was unsustainable. Employees put in minimal pension payments each month, retire at 55 (with a minimum of only 25 years of service), and then get pension benefits that greatly exceed their contributions. I'm eligible to retire in several years, if I want. I recently learned that my contributions over the years (with interest) will total about $180,000 by age 55. However, a retirement counselor informed me a few months ago that the pension plan will pay me $60,000 a year for the rest of my life, along with very good medical insurance. After only 3 years of retirement, the pension plan will have paid me everything I put into it. After that, the state foots the bill. I said to the counselor, "How can the state afford this?" She said, "Oh, the state is constitutionally obligated to pay these pensions." I said, "Well, sure, but what if they don't have the money?" She said, "The state is constitutionally..." I interrupted, "I don't care. What if they don't have the money??" She said, "By law, they have to pay..." I stopped her again: "But what if they DON'T HAVE the money???"

  • mondovibe Human Rights Advocate

Many folks are pushing for tax payers to elect their school boards, public funding of elections, a progressive tax, with fair share ratio of effective taxes paid back into sustaining human potential, communities, and our environment (instead of funneled to privatized profiteering), a small financial transaction tax on LaSalle St/Wall St and protecting our pensions from being gambled away and actually invested in guaranteed rate of returns, all under fiduciary responsibility/oversite.

Moving Cross Country

Does anyone have a recommendation for cross country movers? I am moving from Portage park to the Bay Area, within the next month.

  • Bonnie B, West Dakin Street 5200 block Dakin, Early Childhood fan

I want to thank everyone for your wonderful suggestions. I am on my way to figuring it all out. Will be hiring a mover since my company is paying some moving expenses and I am going to drive with my two cats. All the advice was well received so thanks again.

  • Paula, Belmont Terrace 8-year resident, 36th ward (for now...)

Wow, good for you Bonnie! In this economy, I didn't know that companies were still absorbing moving costs for employees. We moved from the Bay Area to Chicago 14 years ago, and most of our moving costs were covered by the employer. I can't even remember the name of the moving company. No cats on our drive here, just an 18-month old. I miss the weather there! Best of luck!

Gas Meter Replacement - Your Experience?

I had the initial appointment regarding moving the gas meter from the inside to the outside several weeks ago. There's some work being done across the street in the median between the street and the sidewalk. I asked one of the workers if that meant that we'd be getting the outside gas meters installed soon (no insights... apparently, it's a different crew that does that work). The person I spoke with at Peoples Gas didn't have any insights on timing....

The person I spoke with at Peoples Gas didn't have any insights on timing.

So... for those of you have been through this process, how much of a warning do you get before needing to schedule the 4-hour window for moving the gas meter from the inside to the outside? I've read some posts where workers knocked on the door, wanting to do the work the same day. That would be difficult for us. Even a 24- or 48-hour warning could be difficult.

Sincerely, I acknowledge that this is a challenging project for Peoples Gas, but it's also challenging for homeowners.

  • I have to have my meter moved to the opposite side of my house.

Do they tear up my drywall ceiling in the basement to put the pipe up in the rafter ?

Does the Gas Company hire dry wall guys to fix the construction damage ?

  • They look at your heating plant, dryer, and pipe going up to the other floors. they also look at your existing meter location. They will be decommissioning the existing meter and taking it out. They will be tying the outside new run of gas line into your existing gas lines...

They will be tying the outside new run of gas line into your existing gas lines inside the basement. They tap into the old line, connecting the new line.

If your entire basement is studded and drywalled yes they'll be cutting into that to get to the foundation and actual side of the house.

Yes they have tradesmen, carpenters and finishers who patch up what they tear out.

Bathtub Reglazing?

Portage Park/Bungalow... We're debating reglazing vs. replacing a bathtub (it's an old Kohler, probably from the mid-50s). I'd rather not just "junk" it if the reglazing could be "white" enough to match subway tile.

I wouldn't mind reglazing every few years if necessary; I just don't like the idea of scrapping a bathtub that is very functional/but just not "pretty".

  • AH

First, thank you to everyone who responded. Your insights are very much appreciated and extremely helpful!

Second, Donna in Belmont Cragin: I'm impressed that the finish lasted for 10 years. I hope I'm not being too personal in asking... Was that your primary bathtub/were you using it every day? I was figuring 5 years max with multiple showers per day and the occasional bath. But if the finish can last for 10+ years, I think our reglaze vs replace debate is over!

Cell phone reception (Addison/Austin) area

Hi -

Looking for feedback on cell phone carriers in the above area which has the best reception for voice/text messages.

Have been with Sprint for years, which is adequate. Looking into the family plans for the various carriers but would like to get opinions from folks about the reception.

Thanks!

  • Donna in Belmont Cragin I have been a resident of this area for 16 years

Virgin Mobile has a great economical plan $30 a month limited data, unlimited txt, 300 talk. Virgin runs on the Sprint network.

  • AT&T for me and except for some interference problems with calls just west of Portage Park (the park, not the neighborhood), I have no problems with service. Great download and upload speed too.

Sprint is garbage. I made the switch from them a year and a half ago after years of promises of improved coverage once towers went up (I had Sprint since the summer of 2000). There's a reason Sprint has such cheap plans right now, and that's because you get what you pay for.

6 Corner's Bistro

Great food, great staff, great atmosphere. Take advantage of the BYOB while you can.

  • Gustavo P.

    Luckily I do.

Occasionally yes. I have not understood why fresh onions in hamburger patties do not agree with me but this mix does. It is best of making the dip with sour cream to make it a day ahead. Frito used to have a green onion powder packet that I really enjoyed for a sour cream dip.
