So our street has been tore up, everyone has the new pipes and infrastructure for our gas meters to be moved out of our homes. I've been wondering how Peoples Gas will schedule this with homeowners, if you have had your meter moved already did they mail you instructions to call and make an appointment?

I ask because yesterday morning two individuals in construction gear rang my bell and asked if I wanted my meter to be moved that day. When I said would need at least 24 hrs notice to move some things and that my husband wants to be present they got a little pushy, suggesting they help me move the items, repeating everything I said to each other...I kept saying tomorrow (today now) would work they wouldn't commit saying they would need to speak with the foreperson on the job site, would I be home all day? They would stop back by to confirm Wednesday...needless to say they didn't stop back by. I don't know. Maybe they were legit? But I just didn't get a great feeling from them. In the past reps from Peoples Gas always had badges, especially if they were going to be entering our home...and I just can't see them scheduling these final moves by going door to door....

If you've had your meter moved outdoors how did they go about scheduling?

If I see these two again I will snap a picture...it was an older (45-55) black man with a younger (28-35) white woman...

Sometimes appointments fall through and they will knock on doors to see if they can get in and do a job. If in doubt ask them to show company id. They may not be wearing it but they will have it.

  • I set up an appointment with Peoples Gas to do the mandatory inspection regarding moving meter from inside to outside. The employee that came out told me that due to the construction in my area, the workers would be working in the area and would just stop by to change out the meter.
I did not like this idea as it is a huge safety concern.

More trees gone in Portage Park.

This morning they have started cutting down more ash trees in the park. Counting the +/- 30 trees that were previously cut down, the park will lose approximately 100 trees. A very sad situation that results from planting so many of a single species of tree. New trees are scheduled to be planted in the spring.

I know there is a model plane flying site over by Schiller Woods. I'm wondering if any of you have ever seen or know of a similar site for model rockets. I'd set it off in our back yard, but even closing our garage door loudly sets our neighbor's old dog into a panic. Plus, this model is reusable, and I don't want to have to go searching through alleys and spying in backyards to retrieve it.

Any info is much appreciated!

I wonder if you would get in trouble with the FAA if you launch rockets at Schiller Woods or Taft. Aren't the planes flying pretty low around there? Side note... I recall launching one in the alley as a young teen. It took a U-turn, came back at us and then crashed through a neighbors window.

Lights off for months at Gray Elementary

It's been months since the lamp posts in the middle of Gray Elementary were on. It gets pretty dark around there at night, which is also a safety concern. The 38th ward office and the school were informed about this. I'm tired of empty promises, who should I contact to resolve this?

A Dangerous Celebration

I have a video I shot at Diversey and Laramie is from a previous year of one of these celebrations showing the type of reckless driving behavior that goes on here on Diversey, on Fullerton and eventually spills into the side streets and alleys. 1 to 3 times a year. I have a video I shot at Diversey and Laramie is from a previous year of one of these celebrations showing the type of reckless driving behavior that goes on here on Diversey, on Fullerton and eventually spills into the side streets and alleys. 1 to 3 times a year. This is supposedly to celebrate some annual Holiday. It started around 8pm last night (9-15-14) and went past midnight. Why is this kind of thing allowed? Where are the police? Last February I received a “Speed Camera” warning ticket for going 2 mph over the limit and a neighbor got a seat belt ticket over the summer. If I can figure out how to post this video you’ll see, at these “celebrations” there are very few seat belts worn, there’s open beer in the cars, reckless high speed driving, people hanging out of cars WHILE there are children present both walking and on bicycles, public intoxication, curfew violations (this video was shot around 11pm that year), etc. I wish I would have recorded the car surfers that came after my phone ran out of memory. Yes! Car Surfers! It’s really amazing no one is killed at these “Celebrations”! If anyone has video or pictures from last night on Fullerton or Diversey, please post. I realize this isn’t the Portage Park area, but it’s not very far.

Wasn't commenting on the cops or the violence over the 4th of July. Was commenting on the perps - reread the post. Since you mention it though, Every cop in every district is not assigned to homicide investigation - some are designed to control traffic. Hello? Hello? Maybe they're needed out there to slow some of those folks down before someone gets hurt.

More shootings close to home

While not quite Portage Park, its still pretty close to home. this is the stuff spilling over into our neighborhood that i speak out against all the time. (what I referred to in the post about the increase in Gang activity in the area, specifically Hispanic gangs). Its becoming a serious problem around here with the shootings. The one last week at Laramie, now this.

I took it to be people who don't like Arena making up a bunch of stuff but I also wouldn't know whether or any of it is true or not. I hope not! I did see in the FAQ's they say they stand by everything on the website so they're not worried about being sued. Regardless, my hope is that it's all nonsense but does anyone know if any of the stuff on there is true?

That is the Chicago way. The alderman system is a joke. The city should have central planning. Businesses should not have to get the blessing of an alderman to move in. This is partially why our city is so corrupt.

Gas Meter change

So just got my notice that People's will be tearing up my neighborhood and destroying my home to move my gas meter to the outside of my house.
I have a finished basement, so has anyone with a finished basement gone through this? (I fear they will just tear it apart and just leave a mess (I pray it is like the water meter, where they installed it AND put in a new access door in the finished wall, THAT was excellent service!)).

  • Is the downspout connected to sewer or disconnected? There seems to be some sort of rule about proximity to a window (only ones that can be used for egress???), but I have not heard anything about downspouts. We have a downspout on the same side where the meter is going...

We have a downspout on the same side where the meter is going but they will not be very close.

I really wish that aldermen would have (they still can!) taken a greater role in helping residents through this project. Such as letting them know their rights. If you are persistent you can usually get what you want. But PG is not going to give you that the first time around unless it is also what they want.

  • Connected to the sewer. I have a feeling that dealing with the actual workers will be far more pleasant than dealing w/ the schedule makers.

For the last five years my neighbor's dogs have gotten loose and attacked several people. Most the time they just scare the heck out of people, but there have been injuries. I remember the person across the alley getting bit on the wrist, and yesterday another neighbor and her grandson were attacked. About two years ago the dogs were taken after attacking a streets and san worker in the alley. Six months later they returned. This is starting to get frustrating and I'd hate to see this problem solved after a child gets seriously injured or mauled. How can the homeowner or renter be pressured into taking action and hopefully accepting the fact that they are not responsible dog owners? By the way, this is the 4200 block of north Moody.

I can see both sides of this issue. I've been around many pitbulls in my life who have been super friendly. I've also known personally of a couple really bad experiences with them. One was a cousin who had one that I loved. They got it as a puppy around the same time they had their first child. When they were both around 5 the dog attacked him for no reason. He just came down the stairs and the dog flipped out. Luckily my cousins husband was right there and prevented a serious injury or worse. He unfortunately had some extensive damage to his arm. They turned the dog over to a shelter after that. Not sure what happened from there.

The other instance what about 10 years ago. I was walking with my friend who was walking her pit. It was a great dog and never had any issues. Well we were standing talking to another friend and a small dog came running up to it (off the leash) and Max (the pit) just grabbed the thing by the neck. We were all freaking out, as was the lady who's dog it was. We did everything we could to get Max to let go but he didn't until the dog was dead. That was one of the most traumatic experiences I've had. That's also why I hate seeing people walk their dogs off the leash. Anyways, they ended up keeping the dog and never had another problem with it but that with my cousin's experience and others I've heard about make me very leery of them. I know probably 95% of the time it comes down to the owner or the dog's history, but there's still always that chance. There is with any dog but the difference with pits is they don't just bite and let go. It seems the bite and hold things is in their DNA.

Found Dog on 9/3/14

Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on EveryBlock. I'm hoping to find the owner of a dog that was found on 9/3/14 by Belmont and Long in the Belmont Cragin area. It is a male German Shepard who is not neutered. If you or anyone else you know may have lost their German Shepard, please contact me. I hope to reunite him with his family! We have housed him for the past week and may not be able to keep him much longer. I'm not sure if we will turn him into Animal Care & Control, I honestly want to avoid doing that. Any leads will be helpful! Thanks in advance!

I'm about to take a hacksaw to the low branches, it's starting to block the sidewalk and I feel bad for my neighbors getting smacked in the head... I've seen some threads with private tree trimming recommendations, but since this is the city's responsibility, it seems silly (and expensive) to do it myself.

Thanks for any input!

  • Yep, I made the online request, and am hearing two years to fulfill it. Sounds like I didn't get in the lucky couple of weeks queue some of you all found. Hoping I don't lose my tree to the ash borer in the meantime!

Now they are as seedy as the planters he shoved down the throats of business owners. Many owners are absentee owners renting to others, some business are gone. His legacy is to have ruined the entire blocks long area of Grand Ave. He pushed through that project with total opposition ….anyone walking down Grand off Harlem can view his

Speed Cameras

I have been thinking about the issue of speed cameras, I think it's fair to say their only true purpose is to make money for the city, it's just another tax, I would prefer a Cop with a radar, A speed camera can't pullover a motorist, a Cop can, a speed camera can't search a car for weapons or drugs, a Cop can, A speed camera won't deter a criminal driving past it at 2AM in the morning a Cop can, a speed camera can't react to a crime in progress a Cop can, unfortunately our the political leadership in this city Knows the "cost of everything and the value of nothing" just a little Carmen sense!

  • per city of Chicago website:

The fine is $35.00 for a speeding violation six or more miles over the applicable speed limit, but less than 11 miles over such speed limit. The fine is $100.00 if the recorded speed limit is 11 or more miles over the applicable speed limit.

I didn't contest the speed camera ticket I got because it was only a warning ticket. But I just checked the video again and it is indeed for only 2mph over the limit and it says that next time it will cost $35 and go on record as a moving violation. And so since it's very easy to coast a little faster without touching the gas pedal I prefer to stay 5mph under the limit in speed camera areas. I'm not worried as much about the $35 as the moving violation which creates issues with insurance companies.

Also, this is a bit outside of the realm of this discussion, however, I wanted to say something about that analysis from the link to the city-data.com/forums/dogs that A&K provided. I hope everyone got it that it is complete bonkers. If you are considering using some anti-flea remedy on your pet, the choice of product should be made by talking to your vet who actually knows your individual pet's health needs. This is not an endorsement of spot-on anti-flea products, btw. It's also not a warning against. It's just a rallying cry against a lousy analysis, which this is. The "betterness" of fipronil over etofenprox in the spot-on anti-flea products has not been proven at all in that discussion.

A&K, I'm glad you're calmer about the spraying thing. I hope your pet gets better soon.

When the gas company came to our house, it was explained that the new meters were needed because the pressure in the pipes was going to be changed. When does that happen? If the new lines are in, I'm referring to the ones on Major that took forever, then what's going to happen all winter with the higher pressure and no new meter?

  • Mary on Patterson Mary's Beat 1633

By reading all the comments about the work by Peoples Gas, I DREAD the thought of the work when it begins on my block. Broken pipes, sewage, open holes, etc.etc. I had flood control put in two years ago and am now worried about that being messed with. I didn't spend thousands of dollars on the system to have it ruined by careless workers. Will the work continue through the winter?

  • There's a female German Shepherd who was brought in to Animal Care and Control. It does not appear to be Pippa, but hard to tell from the one photo above. I see others told the owners about it already, but still worth posting here in case it was missed:

Found dog Menard/Irving Park

Last night (9/13) I saw two loose dogs on the run (not together, but at the same time) around Irving and Menard.

One was a German Shepherd, but she evaded me. I ran after her for quite a bit till I came across another dog, this one small and maybe a chihuahua mix. She seems older. Black and white, long-hair.

Approximate time: 9:45 p.m.

If anyone recognizes this little dog, contact me please. She is safe and sound right now,...

As for the German Shepherd, I saw a post about her on Craigslist (link below). As far as I know the owners have not found her. Her name is Pippa. So please be on the look out for her as well.

The dog in the above photo has been reunited with her owner.

My girlfriend and I could not keep her for more than Friday night into Saturday morning because we so-happened to be taking in a sick foster dog that morning. When we went to pick up our foster at the vet, we dropped the found dog off. The local rescue Bow Wow Revolution paid for the found dog to get a rabies vaccination and indefinite boarding until a foster situation could be figured out.

Luckily, the owner of the dog contacted me Saturday afternoon and he was able to be reunited with his little companion. A happy ending to the story.

I still worry about Pippa the German Shepherd and hope she finds her way back home. I of course am still keeping my eyes out for her when I walk my own dog. My hope is someone was able to find Pippa and just hasn't known where to look to find the owners.

I also keep checking with Animal Care to make sure she didn't get dropped off over there on stray-hold.

For example, there was this girl just brought in:

I'm not sure it's the same dog though.

New Mexican restaurant at Montrose and Milwaukee

Hi, everyone - does anyone have additional details about La Margarita, the restaurant set to open on the corner of Montrose and Milwaukee in the old Mrs. O'Leary's space? Really looking forward to it!

  • Bill the Engineer Maker. Fixer. Lifetime ChicagoNWside

You're fine Candace...I hope your holiday weekend was as enjoyable as mine.
And Thanks for setting the record straight regarding the new owner of this establishment. Some residents nearby to it will be pleased by that, especially if the new owner is a good neighbor to them.

  • Is it still BYOB? I cant find anything about it on Google

Tree removal from backyard

We have a large tree in our backyard that we want to remove. We have talked with our neighbor (since the tree leans into his property) and he agrees it is time for the tree to go.
Can anyone recommend someone to take the tree out. It is about 2 stories tall and a full canopy (would love to remove it before the leaves fall for the autumn).

  • Final bill exactly what I was quoted. No problems at all...I do recommend, just be patient, they may take a day or 2 to get back to you.

  • Portage Parker Posey Proud Portage Park homeowner since 2006

We've used Care of Trees as well to remove huge, bird-planted alder on the fence line. Recommend them highly.

The Process!

Good Morning The process of running for Alderman is a lot of work as it should be, the people that I have been meeting have been so kind, it’s been a wonderful opportunity to listen and more importantly to learn want people want from their public officials. They’ve been telling that they feel like they have no voice in the way city government is conducted. Because of my background I have very good connection with working people, because I’m in the Military, I have a certain connection with the Veterans, because of my large family I understand the teachers and their concerns, and as the father two Chicago Police Officers, I understand what they facing on a daily basis.

Speed cameras

I have been thinking about the issue speed cameras, I think it's fair to say their only true purpose is to make money for the city, it's just another tax, I would prefer a Cop a with radar, A speed camera can't pullover a motorist, a Cop can, a speed camera can't search a car for weapons or drugs, a Cop can, A speed camera won't deter a criminal driving past it at 2AM in the morning a Cop can, a speed camera can't react to a crime in progress a Cop can, unfortunately our the political leadership in this city Knows the "cost of everything and the value of nothing" just a little Carmen sense!

My questions to you is if you got rid of the cameras and increased police presence how would you propose to pay for the additional cost of the officers when you are losing a revenue source? How would you control cost in order to balance the budget? I think Chicago is endanger of driving people, businesses and tourist from our city due to over taxing and too many fees. Don't get me started on the parking meter debacle..

Actually, it -is- the law that slower vehicles stay to the right. And in the City of Chicago, stay in the bike lane. No sidewalks. Save some energy. Stop that arrogance of making cars crawl along at idle. Car motors waste more gas and pollute the air more running like that.
I won't be the wrong person at the wrong time. I've had enough dents in my car caused by bike riders who were -not- obeying the law. And I've dodged a few more who don't even try to slow down for stop signs. yeah - bike riders need to obey the law too.

Andy, I try to exercise vehicular cycling for safety reasons: I'm more visible, less likely to be hit (unless it's intentional), drivers are less likely to sideswipe me, and I stick to slower roads. I won't ride right next to parked cars, in case someone opens a door in my way (this has happened to me before).

The intersections where I am riding are approximately 300 feet apart. They all have stop signs. I can accelerate adequately to about 20 mph: the default speed limit is 30mph. I'm not a physics major but it seems safely overtaking a cyclist in those conditions means a driver would have to accelerate rapidly, brake the speed limit, and crush their brakes by the next stop sign. In addition, the municipal code of Chicago states that drivers must pass cyclists with at least 3 foot clearance: many side streets have people parked on the shoulder, which means they are only a little larger than a single lane road. There is not enough room on streets like Long for a driver to safely pass. See the following laws:

9-52-010 a,b,c and d – Bicyclists must obey all of the rules of the road; penalty: $50-$200.
9-4-025 a,b – Penalty for motorists who violate bicycle safety provisions: $150 to $500
9-16-020 e – Drivers must yield to bicycles turning left
9-16-020 f – Drivers must yield to bicycles when turning right
9-36-010 e – Drivers must pass bicycles with at least 3 feet of clearance when passing
9-40-160 – Drivers must exercise due care to avoid crashing with any bicyclist or pedestrian on the roadway
9-80-035 – It is illegal to open a vehicle door into moving traffic, unless it is reasonably safe to do so and only long enough to load and unload passengers.
9-120-060 – Traffic rules apply to bicyclists

Anyone missing a chicken?

A chicken has been hanging around our house for the last 24 hours. If you are missing a chicken, message me with a description of the chicken you are missing. He's sleeping on our front porch right now...and I'm going to be real honest, I have no idea what to do with a sleeping chicken.

  • LadyLord Portage Park citizen

@Polonia, not positive, but we think welsummer.

  • I'm glad the chicken wandered into the right yard. My brother and sister in law keep hens, and I know they'd be devastated to lose one. I hope its owner shows up, but I'm glad it has a safe place in the meantime. I hope you'll update us if you hear anything else.

I believe chickens do best in groups, anyway, so it's probably for the best that you didn't keep her. She'll be happier with chickenfriends.

Do we really need 50 Alderman?

Well what do you think? personally I think we can manage with about 25, It's time for City Government to join the real world! We pump our own gas, bag our own groceries, and if we have to keep 50 Alderman let's make it a part-time position that way maybe they'll have to get a real job!

  • ok, so from what I am reading the alderman get a staffing budget and they have to work within that budget. you have one chief of staff, then 3 staff members is the average.

  • Phil Huckelberry Green Party 38th Ward Committeeman

Don, thank you for the heartiest laugh I've had in weeks.

Rest assured, even if there were only 4 wards, I'd still be stuck as one of the committeemen, since I'm the only person in the party who actually knows what the Central Committee is supposed to do.

It's a shame that two candidates progressive enough to publicly question Emanuel's economic priorities and challenge issues like TIF fund allocation are running against each other in the same ward. So, the race degenerates into the cultural war of old residents versus new residents and mudfights. And, yes, the SEIU paid for some pricey mudslinging, but I could just as easily say that voting Republican doesn't go down so well with a lot of people in the 45th who owe their economic well-being to strong labor negotiations.
