First food trucks and now pedicabs: Tunney's uprooting another progressive industry

The City Council’s Transportation and License Committees will review next week a proposal from Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to regulate pedicabs in Chicago and some language in the legislation has owners of the bicycle taxis concerned the ordinance may regulate them out of existence, if it passes.

The City Council’s Transportation and License Committees will review next week a proposal from Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to regulate pedicabs in Chicago and some language in the legislation has owners of the bicycle taxis concerned the ordinance may regulate them out of existence, if it passes.

The ordinance, introduced by Tunney last May, would cap the number of pedicabs at 200 and require them to post fare information, follow the rules of the road and meet safety standards such as require seat belts for passengers and have proof of liability and workers' compensation insurance. But there is another caveat in the final draft being presented to the Transportation and License committees that would ban pedicabs in the Loop and on State Street and Michigan Avenue, from Congress Parkway to Oak Street, during rush hours. That’s a sizable area and, on one level, we can understand wanting to keep those streets free for other traffic. The Chicago Pedicab Association, however, sees this as a poison pill.

"This is going to potentially destroy the pedicab industry in Chicago. We won't be able to navigate the Loop and River North areas or pick up passengers in any of these areas," said board member T.C. O'Rourke.

“The Loop, Michigan Avenue and State Street are the most pedestrian- and tourist-oriented areas of the city. Many pedicab operators make the bulk of their income working in these areas. They’re where the people are. Essentially, it would make working in the Loop and River North virtually impossible. We wouldn’t be able to showcase these iconic streets. The rest of the ordinance is tolerable, but not this part.”

Rentals for a family in Roscoe village/North center

I'm looking for a rental in RV or NC that is 2+ bedrooms with parking and laundry for a couple with a one year old and a small, well behaved dog. Everything I find is better suited for college kids than a family. Budget $2600.

  • L

This isn't quite Roscoe Village, but I just walked by a sign for a 3bdrm, 1 bath on Barry. I believe it was on the 1500 block across from the Army/Navy store. I don't remember what it said about pets or parking.

  • Marilyn Maggi Tamayo Long time resident of now trendy, north center

Hi. We have a unit that will be available July 1 on Wolcott near Montrose. Has central air/heat, 3 bd, 1 ba, 1st floor, laundry in building but no parking spot.

  • Hey Heather, give me a call or text at 815.257.8185 - I'd love to work with you and help you find a great apartment!

Beige and Brown Cat at Wolcott and Berteau

We found a cat crying outside our porch at about 11pm on April 23rd. It looks like one of our neighbors heard her/him before we got home and left some food out. We did the same, but it continues to cry and cry. We are torn as to whether or not to bring it inside, but we don't think our own cat would appreciate that very much. If anyone has a lost cat, please respond. It's extremely friendly and clearly doesn't enjoy being outside.

  • L

There's a few things you can do depending on to what level you want to get involved. You can post here: https://www.facebook.com/lostcatsofillinois?ref=ts&fref=ts
You can take the cat in to a vet to see if it is chipped.
You can call vets in the area to see if anyone has reported it missing.
    You can hang posters.
    You can post on craigslist.
If anyone claims the cat, make sure it is really theirs by showing you pictures.

Cleaning them yourself is actually fairly easy! I nearly ruined my new Uggs this year with all the snow which I shouldn't have been wearing them in, oops! But I googled and found online info and gave it a try. I diluted Vinegar in water in a spray bottle. About 1/3 vinegar to water. Then I lightly sprayed my boots and let them dry. Once dry I use a suede brush and brushed them and amazingly they are almost good as new! I had to repeat on a couple spots, but in the end, I saved $ and saved my uggs! You should google "cleaning Uggs" or cleaning salt from Uggs and you will be amazed what you find! Give it a try! Worst case then take them to Theodores!

Peruvian Restaurant in "Expressions" spot?

Does anyone know whats going on at 4020 N. Lincoln? It's the storefront across from Starbucks that has had signage in the windows for years saying "Expressions, coming soon". I heard from the owner of Coles Appliances next door that it is being built out as a Peruvian restaurant. Does anyone have the scoop?

  • I did see a couple of guys holding blueprints standing outside and talking about it a couple of days ago. There was a short flurry of work in the space some time last year, but nothing after that.

  • I'm Peruvian and I hope that their food is great cause I'm always raving to my passengers about how great Peruvian is :) I'm going to try it then recommend :)

In the past, we've had a mixture of fantastic managers to "just okay" managers. Our board brought it to the boss's attention. They agreed to assign us a new property manager. Hopefully, the next prop. mgr will be better. This company has also started to lose their personal touch as they have gotten bigger and bigger. It's gone from feeling like a Mom & Pop type biz to a corporate biz.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Another unit owner and I were wondering how challenging it would be to become self-managed? Anyone doing this? Do you pay this person(s)?

Landlord Responsibility?

I contacted my landlord in February about the fact that my smoke detector doesn't work, and then again in March. I am still waiting for a new one. He lives in my building, so one would think he'd be a little more concerned about fire safety. I know it's the landlord's responsibility to provide a smoke detector and since it's only a few dollars, I could certainly go out and buy one, but I'd like to know what my rights are as a tenant and what actions I can take?

  • lauren east lakeview republican

That's great! So glad he finally stepped up :)

Squirrel hanging from telephone/electric wire

For close to a month my kids have a daily watch ("It's still there!") on a dead squirrel hanging from a wire apparently by its teeth midway between poles in a backyard on the south east corner of Oakley and Montrose where it dead-ends at Welles Park. Anybody else see this?

  • It is indeed gone. Fake or not, it has been a part of our family's day for months and months. That squirrel was a small part of what helped get us through a very tough winter. I hope if it was real, he rests in peace. If it was fake, thank you to the perp who hung it there.

Say no to Cubs parking at Irving and Rockwell

In the latest newsletter for our ward, it was announced that the Cubs will be soon turning our neighborhood into their parking lot. This doesn't require ward approval. Sounds like a deal has been made between the Cubs and Basic wire, a factory with a gigantic lot by the river.
I can only imagine what wonders this will do for traffic on Irving, Western and all the side streets. I'm not just talking car traffic, some of the fans aren't...

Ready to have your area turn into Wrigleyville? Finally, what positive does our community get from this? What traffic studies were done? I know this is a free market but let's make sure we let Basic Cable and Cubs ownership hear are voices.

Suspicious activity at Belle Plaine and Lincoln and in North Center Town Square

Has anyone else noticed loitering and some generally odd happenings in this area. I see a car parked with people getting in and out and people loitering near the buildings. My guess is that there might be some drug sales going on. I'll be contacting the Alderman's office but was wondering if anyone else has notified them.

  • tbf

I talked to the Alderman's office yesterday. This is a known issue with that block of buildings that house the empty laundry mat and the currency exchange. He said that they would let the beat Captain know that the activity is picking up and that neighbors should call the police anytime we see something odd.

  • I often see sketchy types going in and out of the closed laundromat. I've even seen them taking in giant TVs. It seemed odd, but it's not illegal to move a TV, and while I walk by often, I don't live in the neighborhood so I never reported anything.

I was at the community meeting for the Roundys and 11 story condo tower. Schulter proposed 14 million in TIF. The proposal did not have community support and died. This Mariano's is all the new alderman. You are right on the ball field. It's Schulter. You're wrong on the French School. My good friend, who also happens to raise money for Lycee, always talks about what an obstructionist the old administration was. I also remember Schulters proposal to build single family homes on the school site. My point is we don't need a relative of the old administration in office in 2019. Even you can agree with me on that.

Mailbox guidelines

I got a note from the USPS today that says the new USPS guidelines require that all mailboxes need to be brought down to ground or sidewalk level. I have stairs, but not as many as several of my neighbors that have a mailbox on their porch. Did anyone else get this notice? I thought I would have heard more about it if nearly every single family home in Chicago is going to have to move their mailbox.

Hi there. I have a few pieces of furniture to get rid of pronto - seriously, if you can come pick them up, you can have them for FREE. That's right, FREE. Good condition sofas - we just need to make room for a baby, so goodbye spare room, hello nursery. Non-smoking, but cat home. Must pick up.

The first is a black, IKEA ektorp sofabed - it's a few years old, but in really good shape - we've used in a spare room for the occasional out-of-towners. IKEA no longer carries the sofa, but I've found replacement covers online elsewhere, if black isn't your thing. The cover is easily removed to be washed. There are some minor nicks where the cat got a hold of it, along the back. This guy is heavy. And we can throw is the squishy, foam mattress topper we use with it to make it more comfortable.

The second is a set of dark brown, corduroy-ish apartment sized sofa/loveseat and oversized arm chair. Two years old - the sofa is in good shape - some minor wear, we would keep, but we came into a different living room set. The chair, on the other hand, has a rip along the back where the pillow meets the frame - I believe it's easily repaired - I'm just lazy - so we've just thrown a blanket over it. And woah - get this, it comes with THREE pillows.

I can't get both pictures to load, so let me know if I can send one to you or if you have other questions.

  • Cat

Hi Elizabeth! I'm interested in seeing pics of the corduroy sofa, loveseat and chair. Could you send them to me via email? cat02134 at gmail dot com. Thanks!
