27 Magazine Holders

I have 27 magazine holders/cases I'd like to give away, preferably to a charity. I know that I can drop them off at one of many local charities, but I'd prefer to give them to a charity that is going to use them. Do you know of one?

  • Drewski L Lincoln Parker, teacher

Teachers use those a lot. Maybe a school nearby might want them.

  • Shelly Lifelong suburbanite, now in South Lakeview.

I was just going to say... Check the libraries at schools around you. I'll also check with the librarian at the school I volunteer at...

Referendum about proposed CTA "Flyover" on Nov. 4 Ballot

There will be a referendum about the planned CTA “Flyover” on the Nov. 4 Election Ballot in the #20, 36 & 38 precincts of the 44th ward. Vote NO to protect Central Lakeview!

The Referendum: Has the CTA sufficiently justified the $320 million proposed Brown Line Flyover project and its impact on local homes and businesses?

Vote NO to insist the CTA let the community know what they plan before it’s too late to stop them.

The CTA Belmont El ‘flyover’ will waste $320 million++. Save Central Lakeview, a thriving restaurant, shopping, business district, from being ruined by the unnecessary Brown Line ‘flyover.’ Don’t let them waste your money, ruin your neighborhood.

The flyover will swing wide over two blocks of Clark Street, turning a large chunk
of this essential street into an under-El wasteland. Many commercial buildings and homes will be destroyed. Those still standing will be left facing under-El emptiness and an overhead train.

The CTA ‘findings’ are false, their drawings intentionally misleading.
Plans have NOT been finalized; please speak up for Lakeview before it’s too late.

What's going on in Boystown?

I've lived in Boystown for two years now, and in the last few months I feel like the strip of Halsted between Roscoe and Clark has gotten… questionable. In the last week and a half alone:

2. Walking to dentist, 10 am. Large man calls me a f-ing f***** transvestite with my d*** between my legs. (I am a small blonde girl).

3. Walking home with my boyfriend, 8 pm. Man jumps in our face yelling that we're gross, both of us. (I can assure you, we're not).

These things all occurred during normal weekday hours. It's starting to make me uncomfortable even walking down that corridor, and I've never felt that way before.

Has anyone else noticed a lot of weird going ons over there?

Memory care home for dementia - least expensive in the area?

Sorry, to be so direct about a sensitive subject but memory care is way expensive and my family has to budget the money available very closely as there are two people involved. Right now they are paying $7,000.00 a month for two and, while that is a very good price, they are living out of state and, though its a very nice facility, they beg hourly to come back to the Chicago area.. Its impossible to get costs online. Thanks very much for any information.

  • BunEBee resident since 2004

there is a facility on Foster and the lake. i think it's called the Admiral. don't know how much it costs. there is also a methodist organization that has some apartments in andersonville but don't know if they provide alzheimer's care.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Muskie's Closing

Sigh... Another institution bites the dust. Muskie's (corner of Lincoln/George/Lakewood) is closing either this Saturday or next Saturday. They are renters and the owner wants to do something else with the property. The cleaner next door also has to close soon.

Odd Store Front at Kedzie & Grace

Just south of Grace on Kedzie (couple doors south of Christina's bar) there is an odd storefront. There is no name on the front, and it's clearly not residential. There are weird items in the store like miniature houses and cats. I've never seen anyone doing anything inside. Does anyone have any idea what this place is?

Nightly disturbances in alley south of waveland, north of addison, between hamilton and hoyne.

Hi,

For the past 2 weeks or so, I have been woken up every night by very loud, seemingly deliberate noises (garbage bin shaking, metal screeching, pounding) coming from my alley. At first, they were consistently occurring at 4:30am. The past few nights, I have been hearing them anywhere between 2am and 4:30am.

Normally, these alleys are very quiet. These noises in the wee hours of the morning are easily the loudest during any hour in that area with the exception of maybe garbage and recycling pick up.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

  • If I hear something out of the ordinary in the alley in the middle of the night, I'm calling 911. If it means I get fined, so be it, I'm not taking any chances with a 6 year old in the house. I'm 99.9% sure that all parents feel the same.

  • George F in Ravenswood displaced New Yorker

Grace nailed it. If you had known what the noises were you would've said so. You don't know, that's why you call 911, because you don't know. Let the police handle it. You're not going to get fined for calling 911, if you fear that there is a potentially dangerous...

You're not going to get fined for calling 911, if you fear that there is a potentially dangerous situation outside your house. The people who get arrested for making false 911 calls are the type of people who like to see the lights and sirens coverge on an area, much like the idiots who pull fire alarms for fun.

Hourly office space for child therapy

I'm looking for a professional office in North Center, Lincoln Square or Roscoe Village in which there's a private office available for hourly rental no more than 2-4 hours per week, with a waiting area for parent(s).

  • SK Khalsa Yoga Lady

I am subleasing my therapy office on Tuesdays, 4-10 pm.... Ravenswood Ave. I think you can reply to me and we can discuss via email.

  • I might also be aware of an office that is subleasing as well. As with SK, you can reply back and find a way to connect via email. How soon is the need? BTW, I am NOT a realtor but a friend has an office space.

Folks to move a dresser up a flight of stairs?

Dog found - is he yours?

This friendly little guy just wandered down the sidewalk and into our yard this morning. Is he/she yours? Location is Roscoe Village - Roscoe near Western.

Second question - if we can't find the owner, what should we do? We are not pet owners and not sure how to proceed. Is there a friendly shelter that can take him in? We don't want to send him back out into the street.

  • Speaking for all dog owners, I think-- you're just the kind of person we'd want our dogs to find. Thanks for taking the time.

Disturbance at Irving and Lincoln: man wielding a pole

Anyone have any information about the man at the intersection of Irving Park, Damen, and Lincoln? About 10 cop cars were there dealing with a man wielding a pole.

  • What kind of pole, how long? I encountered a shady character while out walking the dog yesterday late morning on Lakewood/School - he was walking while carrying some sort of wooden or metal "pole" maybe a foot & a half long but doing these crazy "moves" with it like one...

I encountered a shady character while out walking the dog yesterday late morning on Lakewood/School - he was walking while carrying some sort of wooden or metal "pole" maybe a foot & a half long but doing these crazy "moves" with it like one would do w/ nunchucks. Nobody was around and I was nervous he would use it on me - we would've passed each other but I crossed the street. He was a short African American, wearing baggy jeans and an American flag bandana on his head.

Day-time Home Burglary and Night-time Garage Thieves

On Sept 11th our home was broken into by criminals and several items were stolen with rooms and walls vandalized in the process. This was done between the hours of 9am and 1:30pm, but most likely around 11am. This is when a neighbor saw a white van parked behind our garage in the alley.

The police are investigating, but in response, we installed some Dropcams around the house and 36 hours later we caught a man in our yard at 3:30am. Below is a link to the video. Watch starting on the upper left side of the screen as he begins in our neighbors yard and make his was to the alley.

I had a similar set up of motion detectors added to the back of my house and next door business after I got into a fist fight with a man I caught in my back yard in June . I don't ever want to fight like that again but I will if I have to protect my family and home . So like Gio said the noise will surely scare these tresspassers away . The first system is a silent type that only sounds an alarm inside my home , that's how I was able to catch this guy . I decided it's much safer just to scare them away . It was installed by my security company . Works great and also has a timer on the siren . Very professional system .

Methadone clinic!

Yesterday, there are flyers going around in the neighborhood concerning a new methadone clinic being opened on Belmont Ave. and Oakley .I called the 32nd Ward office and confirmed this. This is not a rumor but a fact. I don't understand this type of business being allowed before asking the residents first. Not saying that people don't deserved to be helped but maybe in a medical district might be an appropriate setting. Also I understand that the State is responsible for allowing this zoning regulation to happen. This makes me very nervous , be aware.

  • OK it looks like the Alderman is working on this, so the information earlier about his non involvement appears to be cleared up. Email from W as follows:

    Dear xxxxx,

As the Alderman for your neighborhood, I wanted to reach out to you with information I have recently received about the opening of a new drug and alcohol treatment center at 2329 W. Belmont. The location of the treatment center was formerly in the 1st Ward and has now been redistricted to the 32nd Ward.

Upon receiving the news that a clinic was opening, we checked the legal requirements for the clinic. The clinic is licensed and regulated by the State of Illinois and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, not the City of Chicago. The property was already legally zoned for health uses such as a clinic. I have also met with the owner to discuss her plans and operations and addressed concerns from the neighborhood. Included below is information about the center's mission and the owner/operator.

The center is run by Dr. Anjali Gupta, a former oncologist at the Univ. of Chicago who is board-certified in addiction medicine. She is currently the Medical Director at the Gateway Foundation of Chicago - http://recovergateway.org/

  • An email was sent out today to all RVN members, and RVN & HPN came out strongly against this clinic with a letter to Waguespack, Cullerton and Williams. They recommeded all neighbors voice their opinion to these 3 as well.

Chicago Speed Camera Map: watch out for one by Lane Tech High School

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zDIlbNW6Kzv4.kWRTNheTjAho

Just an fyi, speed cameras in school zones are set if you go over 20 mph. Watch out for one at 2501 W. Addison by Lane Tech High School. The normal speed limit is 30 mph and the cameras run longer than expected (6am - 9pm?) not just during school hours. $100 ticket.

  • I received a warning there when the signs first went up. In some suburbs I've seen flashing yellow lights on the signs when the 20 mph limit is being enforced. This would help make things less vague. I believe that right now the signs say "on school days when children...

I received a warning there when the signs first went up. In some suburbs I've seen flashing yellow lights on the signs when the 20 mph limit is being enforced. This would help make things less vague. I believe that right now the signs say "on school days when children are present". By the time you see an 18 year old "child ", you probably have already been caught. Might help if they had specific hours, also. If a " child " is on the sidewalk at 6:00pm that shouldn't be a school zone violation. And, is a day in July a school day if summer school may be in session?

  • Rose real estate advisor 10+ year resident of Roscoe Village

Thanks Peter. In fact I did receive a ticket July 3rd at 3:10pm. I discovered that Lane Tech does NOT have summer school and has not for years. I had to provide physical evidence of this fact as the judge whom I contested the ticket in front of required it. I went to the school and got a letter stating this. I learned that warning tickets are only given the first 30 days a speed camera is installed. No second chances with the Addison camera.
