Bike theft (Claremont & Roscoe)

A heads up to cyclists in the neighborhood: There's a thief in the area that might be scoping out bikes from the back alleyways.

My roommate's bike was swiped early this morning- he had it unchained while he was getting ready for work. It's matte black, fixed gear, single font brake, with a rear rack mounted to the seat post. It also has distinguishing white tick marks (photo attached). A police report has been filed, but if anyone sees the bike around or sees a similar one posted for sale online, please send me a heads up. It's much appreciated!

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

Her contract probably prevents her from sharing this information. I would wait a couple of months, then check HealthGrades for updated office informaion

I came home to find my kitty unresponsive and barely breathing. I put her in my arms and rushed to the first place I could think of, giving CPR over her mouth at stop lights, and drove to Cat Hospital on Irving Park. They took her in immediately, were compassionate and excellent emergency care. She was almost 19 years old and she has been with us ever since we picked her up at an apple farm in Michigan. I was able to contact my son in Australia so he could say his goodbyes and nurses were supportive during the transition time that followed as our wonderful cat passed on. I had taken her there only one other time many years ago but they treated her with kindness and quick response. My regular vet is a traveling vet and comes to the house and always spent a good hour when we had her check-ups, shots, or anything else. He rents space if surgery is needed. That's why I needed to go somewhere immediately and Cat Hospital was there for us. Our kitty gave us so much joy and fun times. We miss her so.

Hit & Run - looking for car

I was hit by a car this morning. A nice bystander took down the plates, but the drive took off before help arrived. CPD ran the plates but did not find anything, I want to find this driver. The accident was near Ravenswoood and Berteau. I am looking for a white Mazda CX7 with TEXAS plates (similar to CS8 S061, but apparently that's incorrect). Please let me know if you see this car in your neigborhood.

  • My bad...newer black/white Texas plates do have 7 characters. Guess I haven't been paying attention during my multiple trips back home.

  • Thanks everyone. My attorney's office has contacted the Texas DMV. My witness got the plate right. They won't release information to the attorney w/o a subpoena or updated police report. So we're working w/CPD. (though it may take awhile) Thanks for keeping your eyes out.

Car Broken into on Street

Our car was broken into for the second time on the street in front of our house. They empty out the glove box onto the car seat and floor but don't steal anything. They left behind the GPS, EZ Pass, car seats, random paperwork. Any idea what these guys are looking for?

  • C. McGeary Roscoe Villager

A neighbor's car was broken into--driver's side window smashed--on the corner of Roscoe and Ravenswood around 1:30 a.m. today.

  • My car was broken into in the night between 7/21 & 7/22. Things were taken from the center console and my hood was popped open. Cornelia & Racine. Be careful, lock your doors!

Experiences with apartment searching in early spring/late winter?

Hello Everyone!

Hello Everyone!

I am looking for people who have had experiences with searching for apartments with April 1st least start dates. Our current lease ends at the end of September, but our landlord made us an offer to extend our lease to the end of March. I have tried searching the web for information regarding what the rental market looks like during that time, but haven't really found anything.

We know that the October 1st lease starting time is one of the busiest and most fast paced rental seasons, but we may not be able to invest the time in August and September that is needed to snap up a nice apartment so we are seriously considering the April start date alternative.

So I am asking if any of you have any experience with the April start date rental market. Do there tend to be a decent amount of properties available in a variety of neighborhoods? Do the prices fluctuate at all? Is it silly to think that the market at that time won't be as ideal?

Any and all information or anecdotes you could send our way would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

  • Tom Zullo Lakeview Resident 16 years and counting!

I am a landlord and being a native for many years in Chicago, I see May as the biggest month for rental opportunities and through the summer. People typically move here after graduation and or with a young family with the intention in being settled before fall hits. That said, rental agreements cycle or renew (or not) May through Summer months.

  • Thank you all for the information. It really helps a lot!

Found Cat Roscoe Village

Found in Roscoe Village. Orange cat that's shaved on both sides (like a Mohawk). Very sweet and affectionate. She has a collar with a bell but no tag or microchip. Let me know if you have any info.

  • Andrea in Lakeview Andrea wants to be safe

She is so cute. I hope you can find the owner. Can you let us know what happens? Thanks for helping this cat!

  • I see that cute kitty on Henderson and School all the time, near Ravenswood. I think her home is on Henderson, and her owners let her roam a lot. Am guessing she'd lead you there if you let her out. (The lion haircut is a recent addition).

  • Yeah the owner contacted us from our craigslist post yesterday and the cat has made its way home. You were right it's the cat from Henderson.

Before I undertook my studies, Alpana directed me to The Court of Master Sommeliers (www.mastersommeliers.org), who offer a syllabus of recommended literature and three levels of testing, if that interests you. If you're looking for something more fun and casual, I can always help. If you want to study wine a bit and have fun doing it, check my website out to see if it appeals to you (www.thegrapesimple.com). That way, you can invite friends over, enjoy a few beverages, and get some instruction while doing it. Otherwise, The Chopping Block is good. Good luck, and have fun!

Awful water taste - Chicago apt bldg

Hi - I live in an old Chicago apartment bldg and have lived here for a number of years. The bldg is probably 80 years old. Recently the tap water has tasted really bad. I cannot figure out what it is, but it really doesn't taste right...a strong flavor. I know I should invest in a good water filter but have not been able to afford that. Any ideas where I can find out what's going on with my water? My landlord is relatively OK, but is very hesitant to invest any time or money unless absolutely necessary....

I can always taste filtered vs non filtered. I don't see it as a waste of money whatsoever, nor do I find it to be expensive. Filters produce measurable, scientific changes measured to NSF/ANSI standards. Your basic water filter is tested against ANSI 42 for appearance and often ANSI 53 for health contaminant standards, and you can look up exactly what, scientifically speaking they are filtering.

If you're running the water and the taste is changing after a minute, it's likely because your pipes are galvanized and full of 50 years of rust and crud. Your incoming water pipe into your house is likely also made of lead. Your basic pur/brita PITCHER does not filter lead though. However, the faucet mount ones they make do (both pur and brita), as well as a long list of other items. Also AFAIK Pur pitcher filters have a better particulate filter vs the Brita (they measure this by a "class" classification--again in the data sheets), which is also why the Pur filters take longer for the water to drip through though. If you are looking at Pur, skip the model where it's the largest one with the spigot that you flip for water--it has a design flaw where it creates an air lock that doesn't let the water actually get through the filter (literally hundreds of reviews complaining of this on amzn, not sure why they even sell it. learned the hard way o that one)

If you put a pitcher of water in the refrigerator, the chlorine will naturally dissipate without a filter but it takes a few days.

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

Thanks, everyone! Did not know this. Am using Brita now until I get a better filter. Thank you.

Cullom Ave near Francisco/Mozart and even a bit on Montrose. noone's at Horner Park at 2am... unless the smell doesn't leave. someone thought maybe the outdoor grill at Montrose Saloon? (haven't been there and this is my first summer here). could be jet fuel but i doubt it... any ideas? to be sure, i called the gas company and they couldn't detect gas, at least...

East Riverbank riprap

It was exciting to have access returned to the east riverbank this weekend.
I can't say like what I saw when visiting the river. The white riprap is not aesthetically pleasing. The bright white is blinding as it reflects the sun. It also replaced so much space for greenery... place used to have a magical feel...
Is this the final product? Any chance that riprap can be covered with soil / planted?
The said there would be more paths / access but this kind of feels like a concrete wall...

Chicago politics blog/site?

Does anyone know of a good, comprehensive Chicago politics website or blog?

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

It would be helpful to know what type of information you are looking for (historical, current, entertaining, etc.). I would definitely start with Mayors, Madams and Madment by Norman Mark; then Boss by Mike Royko; followed by Don't Make no Waves, Don't Back no Losers by Milton Rakove. This will give you a strong historical perspective.

For more current information, the Bleader, and Clout Street are probably the best blogs on local politics
