Wonder If He Will Agree Not To Spy On Us

It is nice that the Police Superintendent and Mayor are willing to assure Muslims that they will not spy on them. I wonder if they would be willing to make that same promise to Blacks and Hispanics.

Good News - The Court Got It Right

A judge on Friday tossed out the controversial Illinois eavesdropping law, which makes it a crime to record police officers, according to a published report.

Criminal Court Judge Stanley Sacks ruled that the Illinois Eavesdropping Act criminalizes “wholly innocent conduct,” and thus is unconstitutional,

Where is the the Pioneer building? The Pioneer Building was once the state of the art professional building in the community. It was the building that housed the Chicago office of then U.S. Congressman Harold Washington. . It also housed the southside office of the Chicago Urban League.

The building was built by the Nation of Islam. After the death of leader Elijah Muhammed many of the assets of the Nation were sold or foreclosed on and the Pioneer building was one that transferred ownership.

The change in ownership also started the downward spiral of the building. the Chicago Urban League consolidated their offices and moved and then U.S. Congressman Bobby Rush moved. The building had several small professional services left in the building and a horrific incident involving the then building owner marked the end of the building as the building was involved in a long legal dispute. The remaining tenants moved out and the building layed vacant and started to go ito major disrepair. The building was sold for back taxes but no one ever stepped forward to take it over.

The building became an eyesore as the glass windows were being broken, the fixtures were being taken out the building and it became a hangout spot for public drinking and loitering. The city of Chicago stepped in and declared emminent domain and gained control of the building. The building was put up for sale for $1 but the buyer had to show the resources to rehab the building whereas the cost would be between $500,000 to $1.0 million. Several entities submitted proposals and the process went on for a couple of years http://thesixthward.blogspot.com/2009/08/input-on-proposals-at-7801-s-cottage.html.

Now the process is over A.R Leak and Sons Funeral Home will raze the building and build a new structure and add some desperately needed parking. While some will not like the fact the building will be torn down, no one will miss what the building became.

Did anyone hear anything about an 8th Ward meet and greet that supposedly occurred on Sunday (2/26)? What was this about? How were people notified?

I was there. It was from 3-5 and was primarily to meet the "approved" slate. Lots of judges and state reps. I found out because they notified our block club.

Stoney Island Red Light District

Did you know 3 of the top 10 Red Light Cameras in Chicago are on Stoney Island and generated over $2.2 Million Dollars in tickets last year alone.

76th & Stoney 8,729 tickets = $564,198.53
89th & Stoney 10,578 tickets = $634,550.27
95th & Stoney 15,705 tickets = $1,020,115.77

And this doesn't even count the other 3 cameras on this 4.6 mile stretch. This must be the safest street in the city or at least the most ticketed.

Drive carefully and be aware of the pickpockets around you.

The state already passed the Speed Camera Law but the aldermen still have to craft an ordinance to implement them. We are too late to stop them but maybe we can pressure them enough that we can make they serve the communities they "fine" the most.

Call me crazy but I think if one intersection has 15,000 tickets in a year you should redesign the traffic flow because obviously something is wrong.

  • I read your initial post and did a little research and if you add 79th and 87th state you are looking at approximately $4.0 million coming off the southside. I believe if you add the others along Stoney Island (67th, 83rd) you will be close to $5.0 million that is unaccounted for and needs to be explained.

Why Do Chicago Cops Need SUV's

Why are we buying more SUV's for Cops to drive around in alone. Don't tell me it's so they can drive thru the snow or go off road because the ones the city buys are two wheel drive.

Do we really need to be wasting this money? They cost more to buy and more to operate, for what?

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/02/24/new-fleet-of-police-cars-to-be-built-at-chicago-ford-plant/

  • Carol CoolBreeze Moore Self Employed in Hyde Park, Resident South Shore

because (we) are not the most intelligent when it comes to buying things that are appropriate or necessary. Maybe because a lot of officers are have larger proportions that others and need more room. I have questioned the same thing myself and have come to the mindset that the government is run by people that think solutions for everything are throw $$$ at things to make them work better. oh and it also jump-starts our economy

  • Ken C. Concerned citizen of Chatham

I don't think they're going to buy SUV's exclusively. I think it will be a mix of both Taurus - type cars with the Interceptor packages as well as some SUV's mixed in over the length of the contract. Also, I don't think Emanuel is going to buy more rear-wheel drive SUV'S as Jody Weis was allowed to do. Emanuel seemed to be somewhat disturbed about that after finding out during the last blizzard we had that the ones Weis bought weren't four-wheel drive.

6TH Ward Public Forum On Transit Safety And Investments On The Southside

Please join Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer for a 6th Ward meeting focusing on our transit cooridors on the South Side of Chicago. Alderman Sawyer believes that strong transit corridors are necessary to stabilize our neighborhoods and is seeking public discussion on how the community has interacted with the transit system.
Saturday,
February 25, 2012
10 a.m. to Noon.

Chicago State University’s
Cordell Reed Student Union Hall,
95th and King Drive.

A host of transit projects and public safety matters on the South side have been ignored and deserve our attention to help stabilize neighborhoods, improve the economy, and generate city revenue. This forum is just the next step toward the goal of improving our transit corridors in the community.

I'm a happy for a discussion on this topic. My daughter was jumped on the cta bus on 79th and the Dan Ryan by girls she does not know. Nothing was done about. The bus driver did not call the police and nobody on the bus tried to intervene. I am tired of adults being afraid of children. It's time we stop having the "do for myself" attitude and look out for others as well. We are dsestroying ourselves as a people every day and each and every one of us seems to be standing idly by watching it happen. SAD we cant get mad when some other race talks about us.

  • If you attend the forum, please ask someone at the check in to point out Mr. Brian Sleet, chief of staff for the 6th ward. Please bring the situation to his attention.

Speed Up To Slow Down Cameras

It may not be too late to bring some citizen input to speed camera ordinance. You and your alderman can still weigh in. Let them know the camera's do not need to stay on until 10pm and make sure it is clear what the speed limit is. How does the camera know it's 20 MPH vs 30 because children are present.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/02/16/alderman-questions-plan-to-use-cameras-to-catch-speeders/

  • Happy making better choices

If the camera's make it, this makes much more sense to turn them off and make sure they are programmed to know when kids are in school. I think speed bumps provide a safer school zone and eventually speed bumps make cars go down other streets. My street has bumps and now there is less traffic which I like.

Thanks for weighing in everyone. My intent with this post was to make my neighbors aware of the revenuers in our area so that you could take steps if you needed to rather than be surprised by a ticket, fine or even a boot. Tell the Governor to VETO The Red Light Camera Bill

Tell Emanuel to get the money somewhere else. Why is it that he wants to put red light cameras all over Chicago when Naperville is taking them out? The answer is simple. They do not increase safety but they do raise money for the city by letting him place another penalty / tax on poor people.

Unfortunately, unlike Naperville, once these cameras go up they will never come down and we all know it. Stop this madness before it happens.

Call the Governor and tell him to Veto SB965. His number is 312-814-2121.

Under the legislation, the "safety zones" where cameras could operate would cover nearly half the city, the Tribune found.

In addition, a Tribune analysis of federal data on crashes showed that Emanuel's proposal would have a limited impact on reducing fatalities. Of the 251 pedestrian deaths in the city between 2005 and 2009, fewer than half occurred in the "safety zones" and less than one-quarter of those involved speeding.

Speed cameras, like their cousins the red-light cameras, would allow the city to use automated equipment to flag motorists for violations of up to $100. Red-light cameras generated $69 million for the city in 2010, and speed cameras likely would grow that number considerably.

The Greater Chatham Alliance(GCA) meeting was held today at St. James Lutheran Church in Chatham. Alderman Roderick Sawyer was given the floor to address two issues.

Alderman Sawyer stated that he initially supported the black caucus to keep as many African American ward in the City of Chicago. He also stated he did not want to lose any of his ward but understood that he would probably have to do so. After a series of meetings and public hearings a compromise was made. The 6th ward would end at 87th street and the entire communities of Chesterfield, West Chesterfield and Roseland Heights would go to the 9th ward under Alderman Anthony Beale ad Michelle Harris. After this agreement was made, Alderman Harris stated she changed the map because she did not want Richard Wooten, a former candidate for 6th ward Alderman and current candidate for 6th ward committeeman and 34th district state representative, in her ward. Alderman Sawyer stated that Alderman Beale stood by and supported Alderman Harris rogue move. Alderman Sawyer stated that even senior members of the city council could not understand the audacity of Alderman Harris and Beale. Alderman Sawyer had some heated words with Harris and Beale while the leader of the Black Caucus Alderman Howard Brookins stood by and did nothing but remap a small portion of Chatham into the 21st ward.
Richard Wooten who chastised Alderman Sawyer. Then Mr. Wooten stated that Alderman Harris and Beale changed the maps to avoid him. He stated a representative from one of their offices contacted him and stated they felt Alderman Sawyer was running from a battle with Mr. Wooten in 2015 by allowing West Chesterfield to be remapped in the 8th or 9th ward. Mr. Wooten characterized it as cowardliness by Alderman Beale/Harris for gerrymandering to avoid a fight.

Everyone knew this was coming. Never underestimate the amount of shanigans that can happen This is Chicago. I heard Sawyer when he was the Cliff Kelley Show on WVON the day or day after it happened. He definitely got snuffed but he should have stayed down at City Hall until that thing was seen through. Instead he gets a call from someone telling him to get downtown right away and that his mapped was changed as he's taking his kids to school. A rule that it's not supposed to be done without that alderman present but happened anyway. I also heard Brookins on Cliff Kelley's Show last week explain what happened which to me was a ball of baloney. It is a shame that the 6th Ward has lost three good schools in the ward, Burnside, McDowell & Chicago State University. These changes won't happen overnight. A lawsuit in the future? Maybe...maybe not. Not only the wards have to be redrawn but you've got precinct captains. Now where are they in terms of communicating with their respective aldermatic offices and back to their neighborhoods to give those residents a heads up? Same ole same old. I guess we'll start seeing them soon as March is here next month.
