Camelot School moves to Emmanuel Baptist Church update.

Last night, the North Beverly Civic Assn hosted a community meeting with the leadership staff of this CPS Contract school at Greater Walter's Church. Last night, the North Beverly Civic Assn hosted a community meeting with the leadership staff of this CPS Contract school at Greater Walter's Church. We heard the "dog and pony" show as well as rec'd beautiful literature on what this school intends to accomplish with "at risk" youths. Sounds wonderful, but we know that all roads to hell are paved with good intentions. I have never felt more proud and empowered to stand shoulder to shoulder with my community as we expressed our concerns and disapproval for the opening of this school. Most of our arguments against it were not based on emotion alone, but substantiated facts regarding our demographics that are not consistent with their mission. I hope they received our feedback in the spirit in which it was delivered. No one denied the need for such a program, we were in disagreement about where it should be.

They stated that they would not open in a community that was not welcoming for their students. We stood up to show our consensus that we would not be that welcoming community and are hoping that they decide to seek shelter elsewhere. The executive director ended the meeting with a commitment to share our concerns immediately with the Pastor of Emmanuel as the lease has not been signed. We are awaiting the results of their discussion.

Meanwhile, I noticed that signs have been put up on Damen restricting parking and white lines have been drawn in the street. It appears they are planning to create a crosswalk in the middle of the block for the students entry into the school. Deception all around. This is not the time to sit still neighbors, we have to move swiftly to impact change. It's not over yet, when money is involved we have to stand firm and demand this lease is not signed. Next stop protest the church and hold them accountable for creating this upset in our community.

I'm not going anywhere, are you?

  • Glad you had success with this issue. At some point this issue has to be addressed on the city and state level. While "Joey H" states that you must accommodate all children, the way CPS is going about it is all wrong. Dangling dollars in front of cash strapped churches is not the way to do this.

Now, you need to be on the lookout for homeless teen shelters because DCFS is dangling dollars as well.

  • Carol R A concerned Mom & citizen.

Absolutly! You are so right about that.

When will the violence stop

What can we do? It has calm down in my neck of the woods but has trickled down in other neighborhoods and it is time for school to start back. What can we do to keep the Children safe and learning????

  • 30+ yrs Long-time resident, trying to help keep it livable

Agree with you on #3 & #5, but as to #6 - which I've heard many people say before -
I don't think any soldier would want one of these street bums with a gun to be in a combat zone with them. Being a soldier involves discipline, courage, and knowing right from wrong. These punks are zeros as to those qualities.

  • I agree that it takes discipline and courage to give of your life for a greater good. However, that is precisely what needs to be inculcated in those who are misguided and have no fear of death. The boot camp , the steady reinforcement of discipline and the unflinching demand...

I agree that it takes discipline and courage to give of your life for a greater good. However, that is precisely what needs to be inculcated in those who are misguided and have no fear of death. The boot camp , the steady reinforcement of discipline and the unflinching demand for immediate and unquestioned compliance with orders should be a great place to start the turnaround. They need a good CAUSE TO DIE FOR!. I admit I know nothing about the mettle it takes to lay down your life for your country but I can't imagine a worst destiny than dying on a street just like road kill.

Why are the 21st Ward Interested Parties for Alderman Scared to Address the 87th Street Situation

It's apparent to me that the interested parties for 21st Ward Alderman are going to ignore the new 21st ward constituents coming from Chatham. Although Chatham residents have loudly stated their displeasure with the cadre of vendors, phony fundraising, buckets boys, etc.it appears that if those who are announced intentions to run will turn a deaf ear to their concerns. Again, there is an ordinance that prohibits solicitation of any kind that runs from 87th Ryan to Western on the west and another one that runs from the Ryan to Cottage Grove on the East.. So I guess the 21st ward doesn't start until Halsted and runs West for election purposes because these same individuals were silent on the Concepts Charter- Clay Evans debacle.

Do any of you have some courage to refute me?
