Ward Clean-Up

Candidate for Alderman of the 21st Ward Doris Lewis Brooks reminds us to don't forget about the alleys during clean up. "On a lot of our blocks there are abandon buildings that have accumulated a lot of trash such as paper, dead leaves, plastic bags and other garbage in the alley behind them.. We need to take the approach that if any part of the alley is garbage strewn, it makes the whole alley look bad. Also, garbage build up in any part of the alleys can provide a haven for rodents. There are people that have seen rodents so big, they though they were baby cats. When cleaning alleys, don't forget about the shrubs and trees that have grown along the edge of the alley. Cutting them down will also help prevent rodent infestation as well as helping to eliminate hiding places for sexual predators.

Gresham School Meeting

meeting about CPS designating Gresham a 'turn around " school. Not only was Ald. Brookins there but Doris Lewis Brooks, candidate for Alderman of the 21st. ward was also there. There were several chuckles heard about that comment. There were many other speakers there, mainly community residents, some of the children, and teachers. None of the speakers agreed to the turn around plan. Ms. Brooks took the mike and stated that "this is a slap in the face to all of the dedicated , hard working teachers that are trying to do a good job". She went on to say that " if resources were available to the school that they (CPS) wants to give the turn around people, Gresham would do better too!". Her comment was met with thunderous applause It was also stated that several other schools had lower scores for much longer than Gresham so why now? I took the mike and asked if any of the residents ever been on the bike path down at Navy Pier? Not one person said yes. I stated that the $60 MILLION dollars that the alderman and mayor signed off of to provide a bike and pedestrian fly way over Navy Pier is where your school funding is, lets go get it! Wonder what the residence got in return? One of the white teachers stated that they will make this a turn around school, fire all of the staff then bring back new teachers who will be mostly white.

  • Very biased account of the meeting, the first one Ms. Brooks has attended. All of a sudden she is interested in the schools?
Sounds like an opportunist to me.

  • Does she have a position on the proliferation of Charter Schools in the 21st Ward? Does she have a position on public schools in the ward?

  • Scoopie Concerned citizen of the 21st. Ward

Yes, she has a position on both subjects. She will release her platform very soon. And as for WillEnglewood, do you know Ms. Brooks? Just trying to figure out how you know she has only attended 1 meeting? And how do you know she is just interested in school issues? How do you know if the account of the meeting biased? Were you there also? I didn't see you.
