Rev Willie Taplin Barrow Homecoming is a Spiritual Passing of the Torch to all ages!

While at PUSH, the Rev Barrow was honored by dignitaries and the common man and woman with accolades and fond memories. I too have many memories and looked up to her as a mentor. Especially touched by visions from Bobbie Steele's tribute to Rev Barrow calling our warriors i.e., Fannie Lou Hammer, Dorothy Heights, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Chisolm and others in the Civil Rights Movement to gather around the throne of Jesus and called on Mahalia to do a special song! Bet Jesus is saying to her "Job Well Done!" If only I will be that honored to hear those words from my lord and savior!

At Vernon Church of God a spiritual passing of the torch to all our people was at hand during her service at the Church. This moving tribute to take up the mantle where she left off is a wake up call to all of us!. We must not forget this passionate soul and we must embrace her legacy! As she says "We are not so much divided as we are disconnected" Our people can connect if we can learn to forgive each other our slights, our jealousies, our pettiness and embrace a bigger picture for the salvation of our race as a people.

Believe this is how the little warrior Rev. Willie Taplin Barrow wants us as a people to do for ourselves so we may become self reliant and build a new foundation of hope for our youth. You don't have to be the leader to do just one thing to help your people. She took the risk. Will you?

Winners and losers in Mayor Rahm's TIF game

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.
Some reformers I know are a little down in the dumps after Mayor Emanuel trounced them in last week's TIF showdown.
That is, when they tried to get the City Council to force the mayor to spend some of the millions he's got stashed in his TIF slush funds on our dirt-broke public schools, most of the aldermen buckled under pressure from the boss.
Still, I don't see last Wednesday's vote as a total loss. Think of it this way—Aldermen Scott Waguespack, Robert Fioretti, Rick Munoz, Toni Foulkes, and their progressive colleagues smoked out the mayor's loyalists, forcing them to concede that they'd rather let Emanuel squander millions than adequately fund the public schools. So at least we know where everyone stands—the boss is first, the kids come last. He not only strong-armed the aldermen into abandoning whatever principles they might have, but also commanded them to read from the talking points his aides conveniently distributed. Other aldermen defended the TIF program. I can understand why Alderman Burnett's so effusive about tax increment financing. One of the program's central flaws is that it favors gentrifying wards, like his, over poor ones.
Thus, the program that's intended to help the poorest of the poor neighborhoods largely benefits richer ones, like the near-west- and near-north-side communities Alderman Burnett represents. Through 2010, the city spent about $197 million in TIF dollars on various projects in the 27th

Ward. In contrast, the city spent about $7.9 million in Alderman Anthony Beale's far poorer south-side 9th Ward. Those who got, get more. And those who don't got, get the shaft.
It's pretty sad that the mayor's most dependable TIF supporters represent the wards that fare the worst in this ongoing scam.

Sixth Ward residents make sure you get to the polls and vote to reelect Alderman Roderick T. Sawyer. Chicago, at this point, cannot afford on-the-job training in any ward

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

Rod Sawyer being the poster child of how a ward sinks when a rookie takes the helm (punked out on ward remap, doesn't know how much salt is on hand, anti-Rahm to the extreme with disastrous impact on the ward...). The 6th ward has a severe case of buyers remorse and can correct that on Tuesday.

Plus anyone that aligns themselves with a domestic violence abuser of women is very suspect in my book.

  • Glenn in 60619 Concerned citizen and independent journalist

So according to your logic Mr Janulis the incumbent is supposed to remain the incumbent forever. The previous alderman and her predecessor had their first terms in office as Rid Sawyer does now. I would strongly suggest you travel throughout the ward more and take notice of the scores, if...

So according to your logic Mr Janulis the incumbent is supposed to remain the incumbent forever. The previous alderman and her predecessor had their first terms in office as Rid Sawyer does now. I would strongly suggest you travel throughout the ward more and take notice of the scores, if not hundreds of infrastructure improvements involving sidewalks, curb cuts, street lights, etc. The retail corridor the alderman has been working on will enhance the quality of life for countless residents.
Despite your highly personal problems with the alderman, take heart that you too will benefit from his re-election

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

So according to your logic, "Rid" deserves credit for spending the Menu Money ? A trained seal or even a newspaper editor could do the same thing.

As for the incumbent staying in office, "Forever"...they should remain until a better alternative comes along, in the case of ward 6, that...

As for the incumbent staying in office, "Forever"...they should remain until a better alternative comes along, in the case of ward 6, that didn't happen. The people of the 8th, 34th and 9th ward get it...the people of ward 6, still thinking they are bougie, are suffering from them being so smart as to turn out an incumbent with seniority...that is why most black wards are in the state they are in, black alderman have a hard time getting seniority because black folk think they so smart and turn them out before they can get seniority and committee chairmanships, save for the three previously mentioned.
"Rid" will never be a committee chair and always be on the outside yapping and looking in....and the people of the ward will suffer as a consequence....with little "benefit" inuring to me and others.

5th Ward Grocer

Dear Friend:

This week started out a doozy. We got more snow in one day than for the entire winter. A crew of paid helpers and I spent most of Monday and Tuesday shoveling out seniors and cars that got stuck in the snow. Now, I hear it might be 40° on Saturday.

Dear Friend:

This week started out a doozy. We got more snow in one day than for the entire winter. A crew of paid helpers and I spent most of Monday and Tuesday shoveling out seniors and cars that got stuck in the snow. Now, I hear it might be 40° on Saturday.

There’s more good news. South Shore is one step closer to having a grocery store to replace the shuttered Dominick’s—which closed when the chain abruptly pulled out of Chicago, shutting down 72 stores.

At last week’s ward meeting, the operator of World Fresh Grocers, Robert Liska, made a presentation of how his vision for a grocery store would meet the community’s needs.

The new store would sell locally sourced products from community vendors, prepared food to go or eat in, catering, hiring from the community, pay a livable wage with benefits, offer a credit union, and hire 300 workers.

These are things residents at various community meetings have said they want over the past year. Liska said he also would be willing to hold focus groups before starting the store’s interior design.

In addition, the new store operator is offering to enhance the lighting at Jeffrey Plaza, improve security, provide job-training, hold cooking classes, and have SuperValu as its wholesaler.

Liska said he’s willing to make a community presentation once he has a lease. If the store is successful, it would be one of five locations planned for the South Side.

Once a lease is signed, I’ll stop eminent domain proceedings.

Since becoming alderman, I’ve brought three grocery stores to the 5th Ward—two Aldi’s and a Save-A-Lot. World Fresh Grocers will make a fourth.

Networking has been the single greatest tool to creating economic development and bringing jobs to the ward. Our work is not done, however.

There is no dibs! Move your chairs!

Are you kidding? I am a longtime Chicagoan and homeowner. The street does not belong to us, it's not your property. You shovel the snow so you can get in it to park. When you move you lose. I think it's uneighborly. Even if it's no snow you have no guaranty you gone get a space in front of your door. Why does it change when it's snow? Putting dibs or chairs in the spot is ignorant. Is this grown people posting or kids that don't know no better!

  • Happy making better choices

Temp parking for service and home help is no big deal to me but John makes a point to keep in mind. Vandalism is a no no

  • Dog Lovers Community Observer

Mayor Emanuel is a little tyrant. Of course he would say if you shovel it it's yours. How elementary and foolish Mayor, why not come up with a plan. How about privatizing the side streets to snow plowing owners that live in the wards. During the times when snow is over a certain level allow these independent contractors a way to make money and contribute to their neighborhoods/communities.
