Camelot School moves to Emmanuel Baptist Church update.

Last night, the North Beverly Civic Assn hosted a community meeting with the leadership staff of this CPS Contract school at Greater Walter's Church. We heard the "dog and pony" show as well as rec'd beautiful literature on what this school intends to accomplish with "at risk" youths. Sounds wonderful, but we know that all roads to hell are paved with good intentions. I have never felt more proud and empowered to stand shoulder to shoulder with my community as we expressed our concerns and disapproval for the opening of this school. Most of our arguments against it were not based on emotion alone, but substantiated facts regarding our demographics that are not consistent with their mission. I hope they received our feedback in the spirit in which it was delivered. No one denied the need for such a program, we were in disagreement about where it should be.

They stated that they would not open in a community that was not welcoming for their students. We stood up to show our consensus that we would not be that welcoming community and are hoping that they decide to seek shelter elsewhere. The executive director ended the meeting with a commitment to share our concerns immediately with the Pastor of Emmanuel as the lease has not been signed. We are awaiting the results of their discussion.

Meanwhile, I noticed that signs have been put up on Damen restricting parking and white lines have been drawn in the street. It appears they are planning to create a crosswalk in the middle of the block for the students entry into the school. Deception all around. This is not the time to sit still neighbors, we have to move swiftly to impact change. It's not over yet, when money is involved we have to stand firm and demand this lease is not signed. Next stop protest the church and hold them accountable for creating this upset in our community.

I'm not going anywhere, are you?

  • Glad you had success with this issue. At some point this issue has to be addressed on the city and state level. While "Joey H" states that you must accommodate all children, the way CPS is going about it is all wrong. Dangling dollars in front of cash strapped churches is not the way to do this.

Now, you need to be on the lookout for homeless teen shelters because DCFS is dangling dollars as well.

  • Carol R A concerned Mom & citizen.

Absolutly! You are so right about that.

The violence is senseless. Churches in every community should step up or be shut down. Their are more than ten churches in a two block radius. They need to put up or be shut down. Including the Muslims these are our children. They ate the future and everyone is accountable including myself.

When will the violence stop

What can we do? It has calm down in my neck of the woods but has trickled down in other neighborhoods and it is time for school to start back. What can we do to keep the Children safe and learning????

  • 30+ yrs Long-time resident, trying to help keep it livable

Agree with you on #3 & #5, but as to #6 - which I've heard many people say before -
I don't think any soldier would want one of these street bums with a gun to be in a combat zone with them. Being a soldier involves discipline, courage, and knowing right from wrong. These punks are zeros as to those qualities.

  • I agree that it takes discipline and courage to give of your life for a greater good. However, that is precisely what needs to be inculcated in those who are misguided and have no fear of death. The boot camp , the steady reinforcement of discipline and the unflinching demand...

I agree that it takes discipline and courage to give of your life for a greater good. However, that is precisely what needs to be inculcated in those who are misguided and have no fear of death. The boot camp , the steady reinforcement of discipline and the unflinching demand for immediate and unquestioned compliance with orders should be a great place to start the turnaround. They need a good CAUSE TO DIE FOR!. I admit I know nothing about the mettle it takes to lay down your life for your country but I can't imagine a worst destiny than dying on a street just like road kill.

Peace/OSC Plus Program

My name is Chyrisse Dunnorm and I'm the Director of the Peace Community and Mentor to 10 incredible youth. I meet all of them 8 weeks ago and connected to them in a special way. They are known to me as The Peace Dream Team and their name are Avery, Justin, Shaquille, Jaquille, Tony, Darrius Jerome Quest, Gaylon and the Princess Shaquanda. I couldn't have been paired with an awesome group of youth than The Peace dream Team. I've had the pleasure of watching 10 youth from different parts of Englewood unite as a family. They have shown me what is to endure obstacles and overcome differcult situations. I've learn how to Love more because of them and respect the difference between of allof their different personalities. I've drawn strength from the Dream Teams resilence. They didn't let nothing get in the way of their being on time every day nor did they let anything getting get in the way of them as a team completeing their Financial Literacy or their Social Emotional Learning workshops. When it was time to let their  voices be heard about overcoming tramua in the neighborhoods the Dream Team expressed their concerns very well. Ive enjoyed  our outing downtown and I've also enjoyed hearing them voice their opinions in the circle.  They are  truly Smart, Loving and Kind people when you get to know them as I have  had the Joy and Pleasure. They know the importance of being Independant, being Responsible, Prompt, Balancing a job, school, and family. They understand that their journey in life is based on their choice and their decision. They understand that their education is the key to unlocking career opprtunities that would help  them provide for their families. They have learned how to have Intergrity and Respect for themselves and others. and they also learned what to do when they step out of Intergrity with their families and peers. I'm  very proud of what they have accomplished as a Team and Indidvidually. I'm very proud of the Leadership role that Avery has diplayed during the program, Justin(Strength), Quest( Meekness),Shaquille(Peacefulness), Jaquille(Gentleness), Darrius(Joy), Gaylon(Determination), Jerome( Kindness), Tony( Goodness) and the Princess( Faithfulness and Love for her team). Truly, I have been Blessed with Awesome Dream and I'm Grateful for the time that, we have spent together. I Love this Team Dearly and I'm Excited about their continuing Going For Greater as they are in the stage of Transitioning back to school and finding part-time jobs. The Dream Team have already finished their cover letters and resume and have  been on the internet filling out job applications. Avery and Gaylon are currently getting ready for College in and out of State, Jaquille, Darrius, Shaquille and Quest are getting ready for their Senior year, Jerome is getting vready for his Junior year, Shaquanda Sophomore year, Tony have decided to get his GED and me( Chyrisse) I'm still pursuing my Bachelors degree at the University of Phoenix.  I Thank God that they relationships that were formed in the OSC Plus summer program are long term. Peace and Blessing be unto you and your family from Ms. Chyrisse and The Peace Dream Team.
