New legislation could restore prayer in public schools

Kudos to state Reps. Mary Flowers and LaShawn Ford for introducing House Bill 0165, which would amend the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act, and allow prayer in all Illinois public schools.

Flowers was also instrumental in getting Chicago Public Schools to create an African American Studies program for all high school students in 2014, which was mandated by a state law she sponsored more than 20 years ago.

16th Ward Run -Off

Aldermanic Run-Off - Excerpt from Chicago Sun-Times Endorsement: Coleman is the daughter of Shirley Coleman. But during an interview, she was unfamiliar with her own answers and was woefully uninformed. Her mother accompanied her and tried to speak up during the interview. Foulkes is the stronger candidate and is endorsed.

Kristen L. I am in the same low and moderate income renter category as you are.

Gentrification is a planning strategy being implemented by wealthy plutocrats, from the top down, many of which are associated with the University of Chicago, which has through control of established elected officials been re-gentrifying both Hyde Park and Bronzeville.

Why are some schools not entitled to libraries and librarians?

What Chuy noted in the first debate is true: nearly 50 percent of CPS schools do not have a librarian on staff, a tragedy in our information-based ecnomy. Librarians are degreed teachers who are trained in teaching students how to find, interpret and share information. Libby Elementary in Englewood/New City is considering discontinuing its program. What about your school? Contact your school and Local School Council and insist that a library and librarian be a priority.

Kennedy king College Aspen Award

What a wonderful achievement. The achievement adds values to the importance of having a clean, relatively safe and modern facility for learning. Wisely, regional students/residents chose KKC, instead of traditional trade schools. Another, important reason for their success was KKC's financial aid department that when the extra mile to maximize student federal grant offerings. KKC was penalitized for that in FY 2014, but was in my opinion innocent for their zeal to assist impovished students desired to go higher.
