    Part. 1

Everyone seems to be overlooking the reason why most of the violence occurs in Chicago. The problem is lack of self respect and respect for one's community. I constantly witness on a daily basis, child abuse, child neglect and child endangerment on the West side. These children are being raised to have NEVER experienced love or to be nurtured. Many kids are even hated by their own parents. They claim to love their kids, but if so, why let them run the streets at 1am in gang-torn neighborhoods? No parent who really understood love would allow this to happen.

The parents also have anger issues they aren't even aware of. Cursing at their babies. I hear kids being told "what the f-u-c-k is wrong with you?", being called b-i-t-c-h, n-i-g-g-e-r, m-o-t-h-e-r-f-u-c-k-e-r and every other name in the book. This is setting a child up for automatic failure at infancy. Now throw in drug abuse in the home, lack of income, poor education, lack of encouragement, no decent male role-models in the family, peer pressure, etc and you have a recipe for a violent kid that has known nothing but hatred.

Of course many kids successfully make it out of these neighborhoods and go on to be productive citizens but many end up being a menace to society. The ones on the evening news. All of these elements concentrated in a ghetto equals extreme poverty and very little hope for an entire community. This has been "much" of black Chicago for generations. Now put a gun in this neglected kids hands and he's going to use it. Nine out of ten times, a good kid didn't just decide to pick up a gun and shoot into a crowd. Usually these kids have had poor lives that are eventually leading up to these events. The last two generations of black parents have failed the current generations. If it's not a gun, it's a bat, a brick, a knife or a car. I live in West Garfield Park and this is more normal than not.

    Part 2

We need to hold parents accountable. When I was a kid, my parents never cursed in front of us as children. And if one of my parents friends slipped up and cursed in front of us, then my Dad would scold his own buddy for swearing in front of his kids.

Look at the way THE ADULTS in the community allow the West side to look. ADULTS throwing garbage out the car window. Or the house window. Look at how the ADULTS drink and shoot up in front of our kids. And sell drugs in front of our kids. Or recruit kids to sell drugs for them. These are the ONLY examples these kids have been raised around in black Chicago. It's all they've ever seen. We don't care for our neighborhoods and we'll do anything for a dollar. Of course white people have oppressed us and still continue to do so. But that gives us no reason to do what we do to each other and our community. If anything, a racist white america should give blacks a reason to look out for each other and take control of our problems.

In order to rebuild our race, we must first be truthful and acknowledge the facts. Good and bad.

The fight is not over, It has just begun.

The was a rally protesting the closing of Simeon's Auto and electrical shops. This can not take place. The buck stops at the mayors' feet and Ald. Brookins is again asleep at the switch. If we lose these shops the mayor and alderman will pay at the polls.

U.S. universities had, on average, one counselor for every 367 students last year, down from one for every 282 in 2003, according to a survey by NACADA and the college-admissions testing company ACT. You cannot just make up facts and say college students all change their major at least twice before their junior year. One of every three switches majors, according to the Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA. Of course there are situations where guidance counselors play a huge role in students' lives, but there are also many other places to turn when a student is in need. The point is that you cannot force students to learn something that they have no interest in learning, or see no value in.

  • Bottom line...only 23 signed up....that is not sustainable.

New charter school for at risk youths

I recently learned that Emmanuel Christian Church has entered into an agreement w/ CPS to open an alternative high school at 83 rd & Damen. No community engagement efforts just trying to slip in without notice. Smh!

You and your neighbors need to DEMAND CPS send out the head of alternative schools and explain what is happening. Alternative schools are not all the same and you need to know what kind of school is coming. We had Richard Milburn for 1.5 years and had trouble as it is a school for youth who are expelled from CPS and CPS approved alternative schools. It is a school that had to have armed security guards. Once we got on CPS and the archdiocese of Chicago they moved, Many of the churches that once had schools are looking for ways to generate revenue from the spaces since the school closed.

Wow! This is very concerning. I will do just that. Thank you.

One Summer Chicago Plus

Hi, my name is Tony Robinson and I'm a mentee in the OSC plus at the Peace Community Center and my mentor is Ms. Chyrisse Dunnorm. She has helped me to learn many life lessons. First, I learned about the importance of balancing work, school, and family to your advantage so you can succeed in life the best way possible. Secondly, I learned what integrity meant and I learned that You can be in integrity by saying u will do something and actually following through with it. Next, I learned what resiliance was and how resiliance is used at all times and that some times you are resiliant without even knowing it. Then, I learned what it meant to be a man and I found out my self that manhood is a hard thing to obtain, the knowledge we learn every day helps us young men to become men. Lastly, just recently I learned what responsibility truly is and I fell as though I have become a very responsible young man and I have learned that responsibility is a big part in becoming a man. We also went on trips as a plus we went to the Taste of Chicago, Millineum Park and more. We also were involved in a program to feed people that wanted food or may have needed. In conclusion this has been a great experience and i have learned lots about what it means to become an adult and I'm grateful I got the chance to be apart of this program.

Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks at Hamilton Park

Back by citywide demand! Chicago Shakespeare in the Parks returns this summer and brings William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, FREE FOR ALL, to 18 neighborhood parks across Chicago. As in previous years, a specially equipped truck will roll into each park, a stage will unfold, and a company of professional actors will share the delight of Shakespeare with families and neighbors of all ages. In this popular Shakespearean comedy, a quartet of mismatched lovers, a gaggle of hapless actors and mischievous sprites cross paths with the king and queen of the fairies, entangled in their own domestic dispute. Audiences will be transported to a wondrous wood brimming with paramours and possibilities where the inexplicable magic of falling in love—and the marvel of waking up from the sweetest of dreams—is discovered. Director David H. Bell has adapted this Shakespeare favorite into an acrobatic and riotously entertaining version of the play. - See more at:

Greencorps Youth Receive Introduction to Yoga

Greencorps Youth at Team Englewood learned that yoga is not only good for your body, it's great for your mind!  Deep breathing techniques were stressed during Thursday's yoga session with Tameka Lawson from iGrow Chicago.  Students learned that while one cannot control the body's immediate physical reaction to stressful situations, focusing on deep breathing can help control the emotional response.  The session, while brief, was very informative and the response was overwhelmingly positive.   Thanks, Tameka!!

Protests to keep Simeon Career Academy auto and electrical shops open

There will be a rally Monday 6:00pm at Simeon Career Academy to protest the closings of the auto and electrical shops. I will also have petitions there to have signed and delivered to Ald. Brookins to demand that he prevent the closings. With the state of black young unemployment in this city we can not let this happen

The Amazing Race

Friday, July 11 proved to be a day of fun and friendship for students in the Greencorps Youth program.  The morning session, led by mentors Charles and Bettie, went on a scavenger hunt in and around the school.  Faced with tasks such as getting a staff member to do the "D Low Shuffle" (and filming it!), recreating a scene from the movie "Titanic" and taking a selfie in front of the Eiffel Tower, some early hesitation quickly made way for excitement and an urgency to get the race going.  Six teams of two took off for an hour with strict instructions to complete all ten tasks on school grounds.  Jonnas and Mary were the winners, ten minutes ahead of the next group.  After reconvening, students shared their videos and pictures.  With the goal of creating unity, teamwork and making new friends, as well as thinking creatively and generally "outside the box", the activity was a clear success and will be repeated before the program ends on August 8.
