New legislation could restore prayer in public schools

Kudos to state Reps. Mary Flowers and LaShawn Ford for introducing House Bill 0165, which would amend the Silent Reflection and Student Prayer Act, and allow prayer in all Illinois public schools.

Flowers was also instrumental in getting Chicago Public Schools to create an African American Studies program for all high school students in 2014, which was mandated by a state law she sponsored more than 20 years ago.

Kristen L. I am in the same low and moderate income renter category as you are.

Gentrification is a planning strategy being implemented by wealthy plutocrats, from the top down, many of which are associated with the University of Chicago, which has through control of established elected officials been re-gentrifying both Hyde Park and Bronzeville.

Hi Jeff, it is very evident from this assumption that you are truly out of touch with the happenings in Englewood and is definitely out of touch with the work of RAGE. I guess if you are only watching from the outside or staring at a PC you would make a comment like that. Thanks for your comment on this post, as it is as bias as the other comments you've shared on everyblock. Have a good weekend!

Get ready to vote this February 24th with CAN TV's coverage of an aldermanic candidate forum hosted by the Resident Association of Greater Englewood (R.A.G.E.): http://ow.ly/Je5B4

  • Yes. Watch and see why both major papers repudiated the candidacy of the morally bankrupt David Moore, a non resident of the ward with a history of mental illness and domestic violence. I hope the cameras captured him assaulting an audience member that was taking his picture and snatching the camera from their hand...or his response to repeated audience questions about the domestic battery charges in his record.

    It should be interesting.

The annual Black History Month celebration was held today by the nonprofit Gathering Point Community Council, whose founder and executive director is Richard Wooten, and it was a huge success.

The 6th Ward includes the Chatham, Park Manor, Chesterfield, and Englewood neighborhoods.

Jackie Robinson West players are still our heroes

A statement from 6th Ward aldermanic candidate Richard Wooten, who lives in Chatham:

"Stop punishing our kids for being great. It's a tragedy that racism and hatred is allowed to attacked our young people.

Residency didn't make these hard working, professional, respectable, young achievers great. It was their desire to be great and their ability to be coached. If the coach in Evergreen Park had the same nucleus as our JRW they too could have been successful.

Residency didn't make these hard working, professional, respectable, young achievers great. It was their desire to be great and their ability to be coached. If the coach in Evergreen Park had the same nucleus as our JRW they too could have been successful.

The Little League International Council should not have stripped these kids of their title. To strip them of their hard earned national title is a dream snatcher for ever child in little league.

Don't let them strip our "heroes" from something they earned. The games were played and they won fair and square. Join me in fighting for our heroes and keeping the National Title here in Chicago where it belongs.

Flood the league with emails and phones to let them know that we support our JRW champions.

You can reach the Little League International Baseball and Softball at (570) 326-1921."

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

The people that validated the cheating, the surrounding leagues that JRW cheated out of land, are also black...so stop with the racism allegations....

"Keener (Little League international president) said he was “almost offended” when allegations of racism came up in his interview with the Sun-Times.

“It was the neighboring leagues, many of them of the same background as the majority of the Jackie Robinson program, brought this to our attention and essentially opened our eyes to some facts that we weren’t aware of,” Keener said."

  • 30+ yrs Long-time resident, trying to help keep it livable

It is a tragedy that the JRW organizers screwed their kids. I have yet to hear someone suggest an appropriate penalty for this, which is pretty basically that the league cheated, they tried to cover it up, they were caught. Sorry for the players, yes. The adults, not so much.
Stop making excuses & blaming someone else. What is so wrong with following the rules - as many other teams did.

The real David Moore was exposed at the forum, losing his composure after getting question after question regarding the domestic violence charges in his past as well as his misogynistic manner in dealing with women. He snatched the camera - phone from a spectator and would have been arrested for assault had not the victim been persuaded not to call the police.

The mental instability for which he has been treated for 3 times in the past and the reason he cannot hold a job, was on full display, showcasing why the Sun Times did not endorse him.

Hello, my name is Shamica. I desperetly need your assistance to help raise funds for needy school children who attend Johnson College Prep High School located in Englewood on the Southside of Chicago. These students are in dire need of a lot of things that I would love to give to them but I can't help them all by myself. Like the old saying goes..."It takes a village to raise a child," and I ask you to please help me raise funds for these needy children to provide for them buscards, school uniforms (and accessories), school shoes, basic hygeine products, and winter coats (and accessories).

This idea came to me over a month ago when my brother went to school and they told him that he needed school shoes that comply with the dress code. Suddenly I thought to myself, 'if my brother need some shoes, how many more school kids are in need of shoes, busfare, school uniforms, hygiene products and more, but their parents or legal gaurdians can't afford it?' Then I thought to do something about it- you know, be the SOLUTION!

Afterwards I called several Englewood high schools in Chicago, Illinois in order to ask if I could raise money for shoes, buscards, uniforms, etc. for their needy students and Johnson College Prep High School gave me the OKAY to start this fundraiser for their needy children. I am so excited and humbled for this great opportunity to help these young children but I can't do it all by myself I truly need your help! Goal is to raise enough money to help a min. of 20 students at the Johnson College Prep High School. I'm allocating at least $85.00 for buscards, $50.00 for school uniforms and accessories, $50.00 for school shoes, $50.00 for basic hygeine products, and $100.00 for a winter coat and accesories. This equals out to $335.00 per child. I am increasing this amount to $350.00 per child to make sure everyting is covered. So the amount needed to help these children is $7,000 ($350.00 x 20 needy students= $7K). GIVE @ Gofundme.com/helppoorchildren

Hello Shamika, My organization maybe able to assist with toiletries if you like .

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

What are the parents doing to provide for the children they produced ?
This is a bad time to ask people like me that have just received Property Tax bills, with the largest portion of my hard earned money going to the Chicago Public Schools, of which I did not attend, neither did my children.
