New charter school for at risk youths

I recently learned that Emmanuel Christian Church has entered into an agreement w/ CPS to open an alternative high school at 83 rd & Damen. No community engagement efforts just trying to slip in without notice. Smh!

  • You and your neighbors need to DEMAND CPS send out the head of alternative schools and explain what is happening. Alternative schools are not all the same and you need to know what kind of school is coming. We had Richard Milburn for 1.5 years and had trouble as it...

You and your neighbors need to DEMAND CPS send out the head of alternative schools and explain what is happening. Alternative schools are not all the same and you need to know what kind of school is coming. We had Richard Milburn for 1.5 years and had trouble as it is a school for youth who are expelled from CPS and CPS approved alternative schools. It is a school that had to have armed security guards. Once we got on CPS and the archdiocese of Chicago they moved, Many of the churches that once had schools are looking for ways to generate revenue from the spaces since the school closed.

Too many wards in Englewood? Is anyone listening???

There were some comments about Englewood and other communities regarding the ward remapping process....

As a fyi, RAGE has always felt the wards should work in more collectively, as a Greater Englewood Caucus or either be condensed so that there is a more unified voice from the neighborhood.

We hope our voice has been heard by the Black Caucus and other groups because according to this blogger he/she thinks it is not....

"Englewood is one of the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods in Chicago. Today, Englewood is divided between five wards. One might assume that this would mean that Englewood residents would be happy to have five aldermen defending their interests. However, unlike Hyde Park, Englewood does not have a strong network of institutions and community organizations that would rally the voters to elect candidates and hold them accountable. So the aldermen tend to focus their energies in neighborhoods where they have substantial territory. The few efforts they make on Englewood's behalf tend to be sporadic. The fact that none of the aldermen involved have their ward offices in Englewood only re-enforces the sense that in Chicago politics, this impoverished community is an afterthought. Under the Black Caucus proposal, Englewood would be split between four wards. While that's better than five, it still doesn't address the issue. At least one Englewood community group has been lobbying for fewer wards, but so far, the Black Caucus doesn't seem to be listening."

What are your thoughts? Is anyone listening to the concerns of the residents?

  • So where is Englewood?

  • Dee B Englewoodian since 1960.

Englewood is bordered by 55th Street to the north, 75th Street to the south, Racine Ave to the west, and State St to the east. It is located on the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois.

Sharing the News in Englewood

We just want to clear the air that RAGE will post many events and meetings happening in the Englewood area in an effort to engage more residents to get involved. You can find many of these meetings or events posted here: http://ragenglewood.org/events/

Please know this does not mean we are endorsing these events but merely sharing the info. If we are the sponsors we will make that perfectly clear in our post.

Thanks in advance and keep the news coming our way at joinrage@gmail.com!

  • Jeff Janulis CAPS Rep

Stevie Wonder can see that the organization is against all incumbents. Just fess up and admit it.

  • Libby Booker Beverly transplant

That's not a bad thing, considering what the incumbents have NOT done for the community. There are intelligent, talented people ready to step into governing roles. Stand aside establishment.

  • RAGE-Resident Association of Greater Englewood Residents united for positive change!

By no means are we against all incumbents, we are against anyone who is not working for the greater good of the community....We will continue to highlight the individuals, organizations or even current alderman who are working for and not against the community...

#GOODINENGLEWOOD - Don't Believe Everything You've Heard....

Check out one of R.A.G.E. Co-Founder's, Rashanah Baldwin interviews in the Huffington Post - Don't Believe Everything You've Heard About Chicago's Most 'Dangerous' Neighborhood....

Rashanah Baldwin wants to let Chicagoans know that there is more than crime in her community, and her "Good in Englewood" segment on Kennedy-King College's WKKC (89.3 FM) aims to do just that.

Here is the link to the article in the Huffington Post - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/23/whats-good-in-englewood_n_5360688.html

I've been bicycling all over Englewood for the past two weeks as part of my job. The loudest sounds I've heard, from the Dan Ryan to Western and from 55th to 67th, is birds chirping and the whoosh of cars going by. Yes, there are vacant lots and boarded-up red-X buildings, but there are also well-tended blocks where residents are fighting the good fight to keep things clean, safe and quiet. No bullet holes in my bike or in me. But then, I'm 57, in eyeglasses, a dress shirt, slacks and loafers, and obviously not in a gang. Do dress and demeanor make a difference? You tell me. ;)
