Fiske Dog Park

In an enclosed fenced in area on the west side of what used to be Fiske Elementary School (6145 S Ingleside) there is plenty of grass to play chase/fetch on, a few huge pines that provide shade and a bag/water station.

On maintenance: I'll drop by once a week with water and bags. If there's any vandalism, let me know and i'll address it asap.

On maintenance: I'll drop by once a week with water and bags. If there's any vandalism, let me know and i'll address it asap.

On improvements: If anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the 'dog park' to give them a second life.

Note: 'Fiske Dog Park' is not official in any capacity. This is simply an effort being made on behalf of the community to make good use of a neglected public space that is currently temporarily in limbo. Please be mindful of your neighbors and try to keep your dog's barking to a minimum.

Community 'Currency'

I'm curious what this kind of effort is worth in terms of dollars and cents in the market place? Apparently there are people who benefit from such solo initiatives, who see no value but 'patting oneself on the back' just for mentioning it... like right now. http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news%2Flocal&id=9256979

Keeping a Close Eye on CPD's Glenn Evans

Now with a new commander at the helm, I'm relieved but only in part. With all the lawsuits and complaints against him, i'm afraid the CPD is going back to their old playbook, tossing him from district to district like a hot potato. If anyone knows his current tour-of-duty please let me know. I want to insure that his past follows him and catches up with him sooner then later.. As of yet, to the best of my research, he has been named a defendant in six different lawsuits over the course of his career.

As for the other comment irregardless of the meaningless wordy diatribe. The fact remains a large number of community leaders who are served by the 3rd district want commander Evans reassigned back to the 3rd district and I directed them to this conversation so you can ask them why they support him. I make no assumptions about lawsuits because I have lifelong friends and associates who have explenary records in law enforcement who have been named in lawsuits which were later dismissed. This is why we let courts of law decide guilt and not arm chair attorneys on Everyblock

Here's a great photo-op to include in all your social media... with a caption like "Hey look at me in my Earth Day t-shirt" with a big grin on your face while holding a bag full of trash, rake or pick in hand. Just think how great it will be to spend an hour or two out of one day of the year creating a memory you can use over and over again for the other 364 days out of the year, during which you pick up nothing. No need to go out everyday for five-minutes* to maintain the cleanliness of your block throughout the rest of the year, you already have visual proof that you 'care'... even though the daily litter that continues to accumulate all around you proves otherwise.

Happy Earth Day Everybody!

Keeping it Real, Woodlawn. ;)

Web tool helps neighbors apply for $1 vacant lots

It was big news in Greater Englewood, including Woodlawn, when the City of Chicago announced last month that it would begin a pilot Large Lot Program that allowed nearby homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit groups to buy vacant lots for just $1.

But the application deadline is April 21 and there are a lot of steps in the process, from identifying the available lots to establishing eligibility and then filing the application.

Now there's an app for that: http://largelots.org

Large Lots was featured on ABC7 News tonight, focusing on plans to buy three lots by Englewood resident Tina Harbin and the Harvard Yale Homeowners Assn. More than 150 people have applied for the $1 lots in Englewood, Woodlawn, Washington Park and parts of other neighborhoods.

The City has held these lots for far too long. They should have done this a long time ago.

Woodlawn's Payroll for Managing City Services

It takes nearly a half-a-million a year to just manage neighborhood services; the Alderman gets $114K, Streets and Sanitation Super $84K, District Police Commander $155K and Fire Chief $133K. Now add up all the salaries of all the positions within each dept and you're talking millions.

Woodlawn's Monsoon Season

It was only a light rain for half a day but looking at the flood where 65th and Minerva T, you would have thought it was 'raining cat and dogs' for days. Every time the opportunity presents itself i check the drainage caps and they're always clear, so i'm left to assume that the main horizontal drain pipe that runs parallel to the streets is clogged. Usually takes a week to drain/evaporate. Has anyone had a similar issue elsewhere and/or found the cause/solution?

  • Corey Warner 25 year englewood resident Politicsmylife chi-styl

Have the same problem on my block ery time it rain, called the alderwoman an she informed me that there was a rain blocker in the drain, to prevent the water from going down all at once but over time the water would recede. So to me its sounds like you have the same problem, but u can always call the alderman or streets an san an find put for sure.

DIY Project: Litter Picks

To encourage my neighbors to help pick up litter on the block I have handed out at least a dozen picks over the past five years... yet i have never seen one put to use, or even the evidence of one put to use. You may have a better caliber of neighbor living on your block... so here's an easy (5 simple steps) and cheap (25 cents a piece) DIY project:

Take a few shortcuts via alleys during the week and you'll find plenty of old beat up and broken brooms/shovels/rakes. Take them home and salvage only the wood handles. Grab a pack of the longest galvanized nails they have at the hardware store. I highly recommend Menard's 8" nails that you see in the attached photo http://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/pole-barn-post-frame-materials/pole-barn-nails/grip-fast-80d-galvanized-pole-barn-nail-8-pcs-box/p-1459104-c-8769.htm . If you go with a different nail, just make sure it's ribbed like the one in the photo. The ribs help keep the litter from sliding off the nail/pick.

First step: Sharpen the tip of the nail.
Second: Cut off the tail of the nail with a metal grinder or saw
Third: Drill a one inch deep hole in one end of the wood stick/handle.
Forth: Squeeze a little Gorilla Glue or Liquid Nails into the hole.
Fifth: Insert blunt end of nail into hole and let dry over night.
...and WaaLaa you have yourself a sturdy professional grade pick. Now get out there and have some fun harpooning a whale's worth of trash.

Note: After some use, they get dull. For a quick fix, drag them at an angle on the sidewalk to maintain a piercing tip. For a longer lasting tip, always avoid picking up anything off a hard surface, it's the quickest way to dull your point. Kick your 'target' to a soft surface area, ie grass or dirt, before piercing.

  • I think I can handle this...thanks!

  • Apple Jaxx Pissing people off not once, but twice...

I find many dwellers in apartment buildings and condos could care less about picking up trash in their neighborhood. Not all, but a good majority. Home Owners tend to have a little more pride.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

Thanks for the confirmation AJ, i've noticed the same thing. I think it has in part to do with the expectation that someone else will pick up after you ie landlord or weekly maintenance crew. Where as a home owner is accustomed to be responsible for everything.

aka : The Aftermath of an Illegal Snow Dump

After one of the big snow falls during this past winter, streets and sanitation dumped five 10ft+ tall snow hills on the vacant lot located on the northwest corner of 65th and University. Over the course of it melting it's released tons of litter much of which has since been blown by wind throughout the neighborhood. What remains are the heaviest of debris, which i managed to fill the major in a 55 gallon construction bag. The rest consists of chunks of concrete and asphalt i'm leaving for streets and sanitation to pick-up (after themselves) for which i'm going to file a SR citing an illegal dump.

Curious if anyone else has witnessed this elsewhere, what purpose it serves (who benefits) and/or how to prevent this from happening next year. I've talked with a few neighbors that reside adjacent to this lot and this is the first time anyone has seen such an eye-sore.

Last Minute Enrollment Push at Apostolic Church of God

On every Sunday the Apostolic Church of God, in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood, draws a huge crowd for its regularly scheduled services.

But for the past three Sundays, those numbers were bolstered by residents seeking health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. They made the pilgrimage to the church’s second floor family room at 6320 S. Dorchester Ave., where representatives from community organizations throughout the city helped them enroll for coverage prior to the March 31 deadline.

On March 30, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., a steady stream of people – old, young, men, women, employed, unemployed – were briefly interviewed, assigned to a counselor, and personally led through the process of signing up for insurance.

If you care what your neighborhood looks like but it's plagued by excessive littering, i have a simple challenge for you. And no lame excuses, I don't want to hear how busy you are, we can all spare 5 minutes a day, as well as a grocery bag.

So here's the challenge: Everyday walk up and down your block for 5 minutes picking up every piece of trash you see. Do this for a week and you are likely to see enough of a difference, that proves it's worth a continued effort.

As you put in your 5 minutes a day you might hear an inner voice that says something like; "This is beneath you.", "You have better things to do with my time." and/or "You'll look like a crazy street person." Ignore the 'trash talk' and instead say to yourself "I'm ashamed of living on a block that looks so bad.", "This is so simple and easy... a preschooler could do it." and the inevitable logical conclusion in question "WTF is wrong with people?" I prefer/recommend some variation of the later... anger is a great motivator. ;D

Now if you happen to be a doggie-parent, you have zero excuse for at least picking up glass-bottles* as you go on your daily walk around the block... being that roughly a quarter of your time is spent idly standing and waiting for your pup to sniff and pee every other tree, shrub and light pole.

*Note: to decrease the chances of glass shards cutting paws

Maureen i've read all your posts and recognized that you are the exception. My critique of clean up group events is a generalization.

On persuading others to join the cause, your strategy makes logical sense, problem is the strangers you turn into acquaintances are really not there for the cause. Their incentives are hidden in ulterior motives. On that note, speaking from experience, you would think it would be the easiest to influence neighbors on your own block by simply showing a good example on a daily basis and handing out dozens of homemade picks over the course of 5 years, but very little to nothing has changed. I'm still for the most part a solo act.

btw here's a DIY project i just wrote on how to make your own picks that you might find of interest => http://chicago.everyblock.com/improvement/apr04-diy-project-litter-picks-6070778/
