CN100 Game of the Week preview: IHSA Football 7A Semifinal - Mount Carmel vs. Providence Catholic

CHICAGO – When Mt. Carmel and Providence met in Week 3 on CN100, it felt like both teams were going in different directions.

CHICAGO – When Mt. Carmel and Providence met in Week 3 on CN100, it felt like both teams were going in different directions.

Providence (11-1) appeared destined for a deep playoff run, piling up a 33-14 win on Mount Carmel to set the tone in the Chicago Catholic Blue. The Caravan (8-4) proceeded to lose two of their next three after the Providence game, putting them at 2-4 and in danger of not making the postseason.

Saturday at noon at Gately Stadium on Chicago’s South Side, the two old rivals meet in the Class 7A state semifinals. The game will be broadcast by CN100 at Noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 23, and at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25. You can also find it throughout Chicagoland with Xfinity On Demand.

The intrigue on the Providence side comes in the form of the health of star receiver Miles Boykin. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Notre Dame recruit is senior QB Justin Hunniford’s top target, but he’s only played in one of the last three games due to finger surgery. He has 55 catches for 886 yards and 18 TDs this season.

Hunniford has been sparkling, going 216-for-318 for 2,964 yards, 39 TDs and only three interceptions. With Boykin limited, junior Mike Markasovic (36 catches, 533 yards, 2 TD) and senior TE Nate Vejvoda (37 catches, 562 yards, 8 TD), an Iowa recruit, figure to see expanded roles.

Mt. Carmel has been in playoff mode for seven weeks now. The Caravan edged Loyola just to get into the field, before defeating to defending Class 6A state champion Batavia on the road in the first round. Mount Carmel then traveled 10 hours round trip to Belleville West for a win and beat traditional power Lincoln-Way East 20-7 last week.

Keeping a Close Eye on CPD's Glenn Evans

I'm not going to bore anyone with the details but I have (as well as many others in the 3rd District) witnessed first hand the abuses of power Commander Evans has delivered over his brief reign in Woodlawn. I'm not going to bore anyone with the details but I have (as well as many others in the 3rd District) witnessed first hand the abuses of power Commander Evans has delivered over his brief reign in Woodlawn. Now with a new commander at the helm, I'm relieved but only in part. With all the lawsuits and complaints against him, i'm afraid the CPD is going back to their old playbook, tossing him from district to district like a hot potato. If anyone knows his current tour-of-duty please let me know. I want to insure that his past follows him and catches up with him sooner then later.. As of yet, to the best of my research, he has been named a defendant in six different lawsuits over the course of his career.

And a story about police payouts. Jim Avila reporting, and it's your money.

Reporter: This Chicago police officer was caught brutally beating a female bartender, the city paid her $850,000. Another shot this man in the back, he was on the ground at the time, and later found to be unarmed. That payout, $4 million.

In Philadelphia, more than $40 million paid out in the last five years. New York City, $420 million. And Chicago, $450 million over the past decade.

He took the gun, put it to my throat. Reporter: Now this police commander, Glenn Evans, faces criminal charges for allegedly sticking a gun down the throat of this man. There have been more than 40 misconduct complaints against this aggressive, highly decorated officer.

None of the previous claims were proven. Today he's on desk duty awaiting trial, but so far he has cost taxpayers $300,000 in settlements. Many, like Evans, still on the job.

We went to Chicago to ask the police superintendent why. Can we ask you a couple of questions? No.

Reporter: Really, we can't ask you any questions about the police? Are you kidding me? Reporter: No, I'm not kidding you.

  • To CC of C. My issue is that the CPD does not investigate or bring charges against Officer Evans. Therefore there are no lawsuits to be made, so of course he doesn't have to go to court and answer questions. There seems to be a pattern here that needs to be addressed.

CHICAGO - This Class 7A quarterfinal features two teams that are no stranger to the postseason, but each found their way to this point in different ways.

Mount Carmel is a two-time defending state champion, but after Week 6, a 2-4 record put the Caravan’s 28-year playoff streak in jeopardy. But the 11-time state champions rallied. Convincing wins over Leo and Hales preceded a 10-7 win over Loyola to just squeeze into the postseason.
Once there, the road was difficult. The Caravan had to travel to another defending state champion, Batavia, and managed a rugged 21-16 win to advance. Then they had to take the 10-hour round trip trek to Belleville West, coming home with a 24-6 win.
Even as the host, things get no easier. Lincoln-Way East has been a state power since it opened its doors, reaching the postseason in all 13 of its varsity seasons. The Griffins are winners of 10 straight after dropping the season opener to Oak Park-River Forest.
“Lincoln-Way East is a 10-1 team, and we are a 7-4 team,” said the state’s all-time winningest coach, Mount Carmel’s Frank Lenti. “That says it all. The storyline is pretty much set. They are a very, very good team and their record reflects that.”
- Paul Johnson, CN100 Correspondent

'Community' ...how would you define it?

A term so freely used that it almost loses meaning and often you'll find multiple 'communities' within a 'community' at odds with one another, not to mention the differing points of view and values within each; pushing the question even further... what is community?

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

...and to complex the question further, especially in neighborhoods like ours, you have a "healthy" community of people who embrace unhealthy community members as being apart of a "healthy" community model when such people have repeatedly proven to be anti-community (ie community of criminals)

  • I would define it as a group of individuals banded together to either improve or maintain the standard of living in their immediate area. These individuals usally have a vested interest in said area. The problem with our community is that the important decisions being made regarding the community are all being made by people who dont live or own in the community.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

What i've noticed in Woodlawn is that a lot of what passes as claimed 'community' is really in reality a co-me-ME-me-unity. 'ME' being the center of it all... which i find to be very counter productive, not to mention disappointing and frustrating. Every year that passes i feel less and less willing to give a hoot.. and more and more willing to find another place to call 'home'.

I think its a phenomenal idea, its these type of ballsy projects and investment that are going to rebuild the southside. The line has been unused for over 40yrs, this would be a great way to reuse it. We have seen from other previous models how these parks revitalize neighborhoods and encourage PRIVATE development. It might be what the Southside needs to encourage homebuyers to really look at the Southside as a destination to live and rebuild. The Alderman and other politicans from the area should be all over this, but sadly none have the VISION of what the southside could and should be.
