flooding

I was a victim of the flooding. I have lived here 23 years never flooded. I lost almost everything. All my furniture, Christmas decorations , washer, dryer, furnice. Days of carrying all the destroyed items I worked so hard to get. All the people here hurting, tired and disgusted. This should not happen to anyone. The seniors struggling as it is... It's a shame. I have worked on this alone for over a month straight. All I keep thing about is when it rains are the gates open or do I lose more this time.

  • Avon lady Avon Rep in the area

Hi I am a long time resident and Avon rep in the area. Nice meeting all of you.

  • We've lived in the neighborhood 60 years and have had many bad floods in the past -50's and 60's, but this last one was the worst. Had to toss so much away. The only good thing about the 10 inches of water we got was getting rid of a lot of things.

Neighbors beware of Vehicle break-ins

On Thursday 9.25 We noticed that someone broke into our vehicle. Everything was taken out of the glove box. The only thing of value that was taken was a large make-up bag containing a variety of lip sticks, accessories, brushes and eye shadows.

I noticed a large individual maybe 6'2 wearing black on wednesday night outside my block. I didn't think nothing of it, out lights have been out for sometime on our block and nothing is being done by the city.

Offense may have happened between 8 pm 9.24 - 7 am 9.25

Austin Ave closure

The train going through the neighborhood with 200+ carts is bad enough without having to avoid austin because its closed.

  • Narragansett is a nightmare in the morning now and they are also resurfacing 55th St around Austin. Why can't they work on one project at a time. I have to leave a half hour early just to get to Archer.

  • I called my Alderman's office and I questioned why they didn't do the work during the Summer before school was in session. I was told Sym's festival caused the delay. It will reopen sometime in November...

New Alderman in the 13th ward?

Do you think we need a new Alderman in our ward? Come on people sound off let your opinions. Be heard!

Tad just because a newspaper writes an article about someone does not mean that it's factual. You are very quick to jump on the medias bandwagon against Mike Madigan. Being a ward resident you should focus on finding the truth. The story from the sun times about Madigan has a a phenomenal head line but if you read it closely there is no smoking gun concerning Madigan and what would you call a cult.
Because you are progressive I presume the truth doesn't matter because you despise anything to do with Machine like politics. Good night taddy.

  • Taddy...LOL.

change in ward 13

Who else think that we need a change from the status quo. sound off here and let your voice be heard.

  • Yes I voted and yes im registered, no to volunteering I'm not for the status quo.

  • Here's a bit of info for the 23th ward stop and save on Archer received 3 million dollars in TIF funds then donated $13.000 to the Alderman campaign. Makes me wonder how much is spent in the 13th ward and who recieved it.

Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

We have all been affected with flooding, sewers backed up, ect,,, What should the Water Reclamation do for us? I visited their web-site and it was very difficult to get any information from.

I just heard that the commissioner is leaving his post to be an alderman replacing a alderman who has post traumatic stress disorder.

Besides that, shouldn't we be watching over this department to fix our water problems ?

Something is definitely wrong with the sewer systems in the Clearing neighborhood. There is a sewer behind my house in the alley that is collapsing and filled with debris and it took me several calls to 311 and finally to the Dept of Water Management today. Someone tried to tell me that was not the reason why I had over a foot of water in my basement last Friday. But my home is very old (1912) and there is a catch basin in our yard that is supposed to drain to that alley sewer and it cannot drain properly with debris in it. I also mentioned that it didn't matter what he thought was the cause because I am still paying that Dept every year for water and sewer fees and why am I paying for a sewer that is not working!? Supposedly, someone will be sent out today to investigate this issue. But it seems very odd to me that in 2010 and last weeks flooding had no impact on the airport. It makes me wonder how much water is rerouted from that area to not cause major impact there?!

  • The sewer in front if the house next door has been sinking for years. Giant 2+ hole in parkway by sewer my property the house next 2 mine had all sinking holes as well in direct line. Called sewer dept water ward office pictures taken mesurement etc. is an issue not large enough we were told. So far a senior a dog & a toddler have fallen in the hole. Filled with dirt continues to sink hmm

Day Care Centers in neighborhood

If anybody knows me, I'm not writing this to give any addresses or do anything. I just want opinions or facts if anybody has any.

Do neighborhood day care centers and multiple housing in single family house cause sewer system problems?

63rd and Cicero

Does anybody know why a right turn only lane was not incorporated when the SE corner of 63rd and Cicero was redeveloped into green space? Please do not say because of the CTA.

There is so much space and a right turn only would have prevented long travel backups on Cicero Avenue and prevented grand central station on 64th and Kilpatrick, then through the alley over to Knox where people turn north on a one way street south, then out to 63rd, illegally potentially causing an accident.

Please do not say that the one wa

I'm convinced that the people who make these decisions often do so without any real knowledge or regard for how traffic flows in a particular neighborhood. I'd recommend that you provide this information to the city's traffic management department (find out the names of the two people at the top and send them a letter) and your alderman; perhaps have some of the people affected by the traffic on Kilpatrick and Knox (and the alley!) also join in.

I've had great luck getting things done in Chicago by going in with the right attitude: Be factual and civil in describing the problem and its effects on the residents; make your suggestions for a possible solution; and ask for a response. Also provide your full name, address and phone number so they can get back to you. I once received a phone call from the mayor (Gene Sawyer at the time) because I cc'd him on a letter that I sent about something. Another time I described a situation with an extra-high curb on Madison & LaSalle Streets causing problems for pedestrians, and within 10 days it was rebuilt.

    Good luck!

  • I just reviewed that department on-line and they basically move traffic during parades, like today. GO LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL US CHAMPIONS!!

Anyway, on-line there was no option for reporting congestion at 63rd and Cicero. So I called and the lady who answered said they don't take care of that and...

But I will look for names of people within the department and write them a letter. I am never an angry person,so I'll have no problem following your suggestions and I do appreciate your input, you have been a great help Cindy.

Hmmmm... Perhaps it's the Department of Transportation that you need. (Relevant page on the city's website: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdot/provdrs/street.html )

I like the idea of snail mail to a specific department head instead of using 311 or online requests, the decision-makers are more likely to see it. Send a copy of your letter to the mayor and your alderman. Maybe even include a copy to the Illinois DOT as well -- who knows? Throw it out there and see what happens.

It may take a little while, but you can feel proud when your efforts pay off and you solve this problem. I'm still shaking my head about the alley traffic and people driving the wrong way down the one-way street! At the very least, there should be a squad car parked there (maybe send a copy of your letter to the police district too!). :-)

3ft of sewer water in basement from drain and toilet

Did anyone else have major flooding in basement? We now have 3 ft of dirty water in our basement not going down. Came up through drains and toilet. It also smells like gas.

  • We got around 16 inches. Out of all 4 houses in our corner we were the only ones to get water. We are going to be installing a clean out and re-routing our gutters to try and alleviate what we feel may be the problem. Really hoping for no more flooded basements.
