Innovative Survival Arts

Their instructors did a presentation at Monday night's Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch meeting so last night, my son and I attended one of their classes.

The instructors are knowledgeable professionals who are great teachers. I highly recommend their classes for kids, women, and men who want to learn about self defense.

You can read about them online at Southwest Chicago Post or visit their website - gorillahammer.org.

P.S This was also posted in the Garfield Ridge section of EveryBlock.

I've worked for the City of Chicago for 15 years, as a watchman, laborer, and the last 5 years as a ward coordinator under the Department of Street and Sanitation.  As a ward coordinator I was on the frontlines and had a chance to work closely with the Ward's Alderman. I had an Opportunity to be at the Alderman's side and assist in the day to day operation of a Chicago City Ward. I've been active in politics for the last 30 years from the grassroots up and am no stranger to Chicago politics.

I'm currently seeking to run for the seat of Alderman of the 13 Ward. I've lived there with my wife Kathy and 4 sons for 13 years. I'm currently a volunteer patient advocate at the University of Illinois Medical Campus. My goals for the 13th ward includes preventing violence in our community, providing vital services, and cleaning up our neighborhood, to bring a real change to the City of Chicago, and by offering my experience to better serve our community.

Luis"checo"Pacheco

  • Are you the same Luis Pacheco that is on the City of Chicago's "do not hire list"?

  • No I am not and can you post the link to said list. Thank you.

Alderman for the 13th ward.

The people outcries for change in Chicago. But to move forward you must have change.the age of the old machine is dead and career politicians are dinosaurs and set in their ways ,while they are in office this city will not see any change . We all need to be part of the solution to bring the citizens in this great city out to vote on the next election. Show we have voice and we need to make that voice a strong one.

Thank you for the suggestion I will bring it up again at my beat meeting which I always attend. I undersatnd that CPD may or may not read this I do know that family members of officers do. And I also want to get the word out that it does work to call 911 for noise issue's. It is brought up on this sight as well as at the meeting that the police never come. I just want to remind EB users they do come and you can get results if you follow the steps.

Pedestrian Friendly Crosswalks

Safe Streets for Chicago is a law in Chicago which requires vehicles to stop for pedestrians allowing them to cross at intersections. If the intersection does not have a traffic light, there will be painted parallel lines from one corner to the other, or a series of painted bars between the parallel lines connecting the corner to the other.

Chicago recently started enforcing drivers to stop for pedestrians by issuing traffic tickets. That brings up some issues:

(1) Individuals or a group of individuals needing to cross to a School or Park.

(2) Dog walkers

(3) Individuals waiting for CTA buses, and

(4) and People simply waiting at crosswalks

No. 1 - is self-explanatory.

No. 2 - is understandable, until today ... I approached an intersection, there was a woman with her small dog at the corner. She allowed him/her to sniff out the area, relieve itself, then quickly pulled it to crossed in front of me. I understand drivers need to stop, but pedestrians need to give some kind of indicating they intend to cross.

No. 3 - Many times I see individuals at bus stops simply walk out into the street, drivers do not know if you intend to cross, or are looking for your bus.

No 4 - I have seen individuals standing as if they are prepared to cross but make no attempt to do so. I am not sure if they are too intimidated to cross, waiting for a ride, or merely waiting for someone.

I remembered when I was in Canada in the mid 1990's. They had crosswalk bars painted on the street for pedestrians similar to ours.

Me: "How do you know when to stop for a pedestrian?"

Driver: "They stick out their hand sideways."

Hey Chicago, maybe we need to start something like this to help approaching drivers.

  • As an avid walker I will say I am afraid of the drivers. I can't tell you the number of times u have been nearly ran over at traffic lights stop signs etc. and then they them I get screamed at & swore at fir getting in their way. So I try err on the way of caution let them go

  • Contact Martin Arteaga he's running for 23ward alderman and he's on this mission to better the streets for the community.

  • Pedestrian laws are not being enforce and they should be tthen will driver would be more careful.

Anybody want to talk about the Water bill?

I feel defeated and less of a person who normally has a say so and I don't know what to think and/or do other than just pay the shocking increased water bill. This just does not feel right. It feels like an attack. Now I feel there are two sides in this city. US AND THEM. Is this the democracy we all know? Why the increase and when was the first we heard about this?

So with that being said, how is this 100% increase in the cost of water substantiated? This is big time bullying. If you do not get a water meter then your bill increases by 100%.

  • SETROC Here I am Roc you like a hurricane

    keep voting democRAT.

  • If the city is in need of money and hike the price of water to obtain more money, how will the city make money when everyone gets a meter? I read all the comments about how much money were going to save when we get a meter. Think about it. In my opinion metered folks are going to get hammered eventually in excess of what non-metered people got.

Keeping Cool and Saving Money

Some of the tips our household has learned throughout the years, to remain cool in the summer and save on billing:

1. Replaced our windows for energy savings

2. Purchased "Room Darkening Shades." They cost more, but can cool off a room as much as 20 degrees. The additional benefit, if you want to sleep late, it truly darkens the room.

3. Clean Metal Furnace Filters, or replace Disposable Filters in your furnace monthly.

3. Clean Metal Furnace Filters, or replace Disposable Filters in your furnace monthly.

4. Get your AC serviced annually in the spring, and your Furnace in the winter. Your AC uses the blowers from your furnace.

5. To save on energy bills, wash and dry clothing in the evenings - nonpeak hours.

6. Run your dishwasher late into the evening. Make sure to run the hot water tap beforehand to make sure the water is hot. You use more energy for the dishwasher to heat the water.

7. When drying clothes, toss in a clean bath or beach towel into each load. Clothes dry 15 to 20 minutes faster.

Make sure to clean the lint from dryer filter. We were told by a technician after removing the lint, run the filter under running water and to use a brush. Fabric Softener sheets causes buildup and disrupt the flow of air. You can tell when running water through your filter, water wells up slightly instead of flowing through readily.

8. We have our air conditioning set at 76-77 degrees, and run our ceiling fans. Remembering the directions:

Summer is counter-clockwise (picture your clock moving backwards)
Winter is clockwise (picture your clock moving forward)

  • Great tips. We do most of these. Our A/C is not set quite that high and we only have one fan that only moves in one direction. But, we also have 4 large trees (3 in back and the 1 out front) and our backyard is noticeably cooler no matter...

Great tips. We do most of these. Our A/C is not set quite that high and we only have one fan that only moves in one direction. But, we also have 4 large trees (3 in back and the 1 out front) and our backyard is noticeably cooler no matter how hot out. They also shield the house in the winter. That is something to consider before chopping down all the trees around the house. I see so many people who have moved into a house in the neighborhood and the first thing they do is chop down the trees! I'm talking perfectly healthy, well-kept ones, not diseased or overgrown or otherwise problematic. They take years to grow however, so treasure the ones that you have.
