DISASTER HOTLINE for the 23rdWard!

When a disaster strikes, people look for help and expect to get it from their elected officials. These past several months, we have faced cruel weather conditions where heavy rains and gusty winds left many residents with flooded basements, downed trees, damaged roofs, downed power lines and broken gas mains. Many of these conditions could be life threatening. These past several months, we have faced cruel weather conditions where heavy rains and gusty winds left many residents with flooded basements, downed trees, damaged roofs, downed power lines and broken gas mains. Many of these conditions could be life threatening. People lost electricity, needed additional trash pick-ups, required prompt assistance to have sewers opened up, etc. It is unfortunate, that in 19 years of alderman Zalewski being in the office, residents have not gotten the assistance they deserve, but help is on the way.
If elected, I will create an aldermanic DISASTER HOTLINE with open phone lines, not just a recording, to assist and provide information to residents of the 23rd Ward. My aldermanic staff and I will answer phones from 6am till midnight during any emergency to provide answers, take requests and expedite outage repairs. The residents would be able to call my office to find out when electricity will be restored, downed trees cleaned up or how to get assistance in pumping water from their basements. These are issues the public deserves to be helped with. It is just the right thing to do when people need help.

This is just more duplication of services already available. A few weeks ago, I got a call from the Alderman's office that purported to be a "well-being check" since I am a senior citizen. I find such "solicitude" intrusive and an invasion of my privacy. It is not the job of the alderman to manage my life or even my well-being and that is all that you are proposing. The provision of city services can be effected by calling 311 or requesting such services on-line, there is no need for a "DISASTER HOTLINE". Such a thing, especially manned 18 hours a day is just another expensive boondoggle.

Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

We have all been affected with flooding, sewers backed up, ect,,, What should the Water Reclamation do for us? I visited their web-site and it was very difficult to get any information from.

I just heard that the commissioner is leaving his post to be an alderman replacing a alderman who has post traumatic stress disorder.

Besides that, shouldn't we be watching over this department to fix our water problems ?

Something is definitely wrong with the sewer systems in the Clearing neighborhood. There is a sewer behind my house in the alley that is collapsing and filled with debris and it took me several calls to 311 and finally to the Dept of Water Management today. Someone tried to tell me that was not the reason why I had over a foot of water in my basement last Friday. But my home is very old (1912) and there is a catch basin in our yard that is supposed to drain to that alley sewer and it cannot drain properly with debris in it. I also mentioned that it didn't matter what he thought was the cause because I am still paying that Dept every year for water and sewer fees and why am I paying for a sewer that is not working!? Supposedly, someone will be sent out today to investigate this issue. But it seems very odd to me that in 2010 and last weeks flooding had no impact on the airport. It makes me wonder how much water is rerouted from that area to not cause major impact there?!

  • The sewer in front if the house next door has been sinking for years. Giant 2+ hole in parkway by sewer my property the house next 2 mine had all sinking holes as well in direct line. Called sewer dept water ward office pictures taken mesurement etc. is an issue not large enough we were told. So far a senior a dog & a toddler have fallen in the hole. Filled with dirt continues to sink hmm

Day Care Centers in neighborhood

If anybody knows me, I'm not writing this to give any addresses or do anything. I just want opinions or facts if anybody has any.

Do neighborhood day care centers and multiple housing in single family house cause sewer system problems?

Call 311 if you got Water In Basement

Call 311 or go on-line too 311 service request. The service requests are in alpha order therefore Water In a Basement is down in the W's (so don't give up you'll find the correct choice).

By documenting on-line, you receive a transaction number which enables you to follow up with 311. Use this method for all service requests, and there are many many service requests to choose from.

Also if you got water in your basement and a nearby sewer runs slow or not at all document that also.

  • We always have a sewer smell, so we cover our drain. But do you have overhead or underground system in your house?
Actually, I know a great Home Inspector. He can answer all of your questions. His number is 1-773-914-3620, leave him a message since he's working.

  • Thanks for the phone number, I'll give him a call soon.

Sewer hasn't drained in over 5 years

Location is on the side of a corner house at 6359 S Knox. The drain surface is kept free of debris. Everyone has called every department. Many many times we've called 311, the Ward Office, streets and sans. The trucks have come out but they do nothing. I expect to receive a call if it's been checked out with any resolution. It smells so bad. What can we do to find out how this is going to be resolved, does anybody know?

63rd and Cicero

Does anybody know why a right turn only lane was not incorporated when the SE corner of 63rd and Cicero was redeveloped into green space? Please do not say because of the CTA.

There is so much space and a right turn only would have prevented long travel backups on Cicero Avenue and prevented grand central station on 64th and Kilpatrick, then through the alley over to Knox where people turn north on a one way street south, then out to 63rd, illegally potentially causing an accident.

Please do not say that the one wa

I'm convinced that the people who make these decisions often do so without any real knowledge or regard for how traffic flows in a particular neighborhood. I'd recommend that you provide this information to the city's traffic management department (find out the names of the two people at the top and send them a letter) and your alderman; perhaps have some of the people affected by the traffic on Kilpatrick and Knox (and the alley!) also join in.

I've had great luck getting things done in Chicago by going in with the right attitude: Be factual and civil in describing the problem and its effects on the residents; make your suggestions for a possible solution; and ask for a response. Also provide your full name, address and phone number so they can get back to you. I once received a phone call from the mayor (Gene Sawyer at the time) because I cc'd him on a letter that I sent about something. Another time I described a situation with an extra-high curb on Madison & LaSalle Streets causing problems for pedestrians, and within 10 days it was rebuilt.

    Good luck!

I like the idea of snail mail to a specific department head instead of using 311 or online requests, the decision-makers are more likely to see it. Send a copy of your letter to the mayor and your alderman. Maybe even include a copy to the Illinois DOT as well -- who knows? Throw it out there and see what happens.

It may take a little while, but you can feel proud when your efforts pay off and you solve this problem. I'm still shaking my head about the alley traffic and people driving the wrong way down the one-way street! At the very least, there should be a squad car parked there (maybe send a copy of your letter to the police district too!). :-)

Garage Broken into, crook captured 2weeks later

I live on the 3700 block of W. 55th place, recently appox. 2 to 3 weeks ago my garage was broken into. I wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for my neighbor who saw the man leaving. We lost out on $600 worth of merchandise. 2 weeks later my sons catch a man matching the same description of the guy who broke into our garage, he was attempting to break into an abandoned 2flat building on our block. My sons held him and called police. Watch out people!! Eyes and ears open!

  • Thanks. Maritza. Do you have a police report number to share, or at least the time/date/address where he was arrested? I'd like to write a news story about it. Tim Hadac, swchicagopost.com.

Our amazing team of community organizers started with just 10 salons and now we have more than double that. Team A23 is all about working with the community to benefit the entire 23rd Ward both east and west side of Cicero Ave. This is the kind of leadership and community outreach you can expect when we get Martin Arteaga elected to be the next 23rd Ward Alderman.

With many families struggling and living paycheck to paycheck in the 23rd Ward of Chicago we understand how costly “Going Back To School” time can be for families. That is why A23 Field Organizers went out to Local Hair Salons in the 23rd Ward to help offset the cost of Haircuts for Back to School at just $5.00 MONDAY TO THURSDAY starting August 18th-21st & August 25th-28th . Just present your school ID or print the coupon below and give to one of the following participating Hair Salons below.

Call for an appointment or if you have any questions call the Martin Arteaga for 23rd Ward Alderman’s office at 708-505-9166 or email info@arteaga23.com.

Working together we can bring the CHANGE the 23rd Ward needs! Thank you to all the hair salons and barber shops that have participated.

Please visit our website at www.move23forward.com for a complete list of salons as we continue to reach out to local businesses.

Yep, Hammertime..I am here also! Jen was not demonize get anyone, but simply asking how giving away their services is helping the financial crisis of the business owners andtheir employees. For example, if I owed a salon that offered this deal for $5 and my usual price is $10 for a haircut, where is the other $5 dollars coming from? Did A23 supplement this effort by paying the deficit or just expected the owners to take a loss? Most salons and barbershops rent chairs to stylist and barbers, so they can service teir clients. Subsequently, they earn money in order topay their rent to owner. If stylists are asked to reduce their fee, it reduces the money they have to pay their personal bills and the rent to the owner. Again, stop getting bent out of shape, because someone calls your person to the carpet on an issue. This should be a warning to voters that A23 is about fluff and might skirt the issues once in office!

  • Actually most of these salons had similar promotions going on and were happy to join in. They had the option to say no, pick 1 day, or all 4 days. Of course there were people who said no but the majority of the salons that didn't participate was due to the fact that they were short staffed. Personally I think that with 40 salons this promotion was a success and we appreciate and thank all the salons/barber shops that participated. :-)

Former Aldermanic Candidate for Chicago’s 23rd Ward, Anna Corral, endorses and joins Martin Arteaga’s for 23rd Ward Alderman campaign.

Corral, a health professional and community activists in the south west side of Chicago, had previously launched her campaign for Alderman in the 23rd ward. After several conversations and meetings with the Arteaga Campaign, Corral decided to “join forces” and work together to bring the much needed change in the 23rd ward.
“I found myself asking people to support my campaign or Martins. It was clear Martin had an organized campaign team and support from all over Chicago. Joining forces to work together for the 23rd ward and bring the change we need from the current administration made sense.” Said Corral.

Corral will join the Arteaga campaign as Community Outreach Director. “Having Anna’s endorsement and join our team is an honor. She cares a lot about the people in the 23rd Ward and like my self is a concerned parent and citizen who is tired of seeing the communities of the 23rd Ward being neglected.”

The 23rd Ward includes Midway International Airport and parts of Garfield Ridge, Clearing, Archer Heights and West Elsdon. But in the 2015 election, the ward also will spread south and east to take in parts of West Lawn, Chicago Lawn and other neighborhoods. The reconfigured 23rd Ward will see its Hispanic population jump from about 47 percent to around 67 percent.

We have a large number of seniors (including yours truly) in the area around Pasteur Park. But we don't have a decent park field house. Seniors need a place to exercise, especially in the winter months. A decent running track around the park would also be great for the aging limbs.

FBI and police with guns on Karlov and 58th

Does anyone know what happened? I was driving to westlawn grocery store, and saw police speeding through the little streets, then up and down the alley. They were looking in people's yards and then a bunch got off and walked up and down the block carrying machine guns...

  • This is likely what you witnessed on Aug.7th, WestLawn Girl (I saw this newsstory a day or so later, in the Chicago Sun-times: and here is an online link to the program, wherein the Chicago Police, the FBI, and County police are teaming up to patrol the streets in some of the most high-crime areas of our city. Apparently, WestLawn counts as that!

    http://patch.com/illinois/lincoln-square/fbi-joins-chicago-police-going-after-violent-gang-members/#.U--pp03licw

  • 58th and Karlov is not part of West Lawn, it is West Elsdon.

The area between 55th and 59th from Pulaski to Cicero is still a nice place to live. West Elsdon is from Central Park (east) to Cicero (west), 59th (north) to 52nd/51st Street (south).

If something was going on at 58th a Karlov, it probably was a violation of a court appearance. If you check out crimes statistics, West Elsdon's highest issues are robbery and Burglary.

I had an Opportunity to be at the Alderman's side and assist in the day to day operation of a Chicago City Ward. I've been active in politics for the last 30 years from the grassroots up and am no stranger to Chicago politics.

I'm currently seeking to run for the seat of Alderman of the 13 Ward. I've lived there with my wife Kathy and 4 sons for 13 years. I'm currently a volunteer patient advocate at the University of Illinois Medical Campus. My goals for the 13th ward includes preventing violence in our community, providing vital services, and cleaning up our neighborhood, to bring a real change to the City of Chicago, and by offering my experience to better serve our community.

I wasn't sure if you could file for bankruptcy multiply times, so I goggled it.

How Often Can You File For Bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a legal process that is designed to help both consumers and businesses eliminate their debt or repay the debt under the protection of bankruptcy court. Presently there are no limits to the number of times you can file for bankruptcy. Bankruptcy law determines the length of time between filing for bankruptcy and multiple filings may result in debt that is not discharged if it appears you are abusing bankruptcy laws.
