Fire Response @ 54th & Drexel

Four fire trucks just responded to what appears to be a fire in the basement apartment in the greystone a few buildings down from the corner of 54th and Drexel. Perhaps coincidentally, this is also in or near the same building where -- to the untrained eye -- there are a lot of comings, goings, and general loitering that seem vaguely suspicious. I asked the firemen standing around what was going on, and they first ignored me, and told me it's "absolutely not [their] job" to communicate with neighbors about the nature of fires on their street. So, any neighbors out there who can shed some light on what's going on -- either this time in particular, or in general?

Cops are not patrolling parks!!!

I am beyond tired of not being able to take my dog out to the bathroom because there are 10+ people in groups outside smoking weed etc after 11 pm. This neighborhood has turned into a s**t show. I called UC cops because I was told it was quicker they said it was CPD issue. Hmm. Interesting. They are constantly over here when it's convenient for them but not when residents are In need. Hyde park crime is going to sky rocket because cops over here don't care at all!!!

  • Walk around the neighborhood and one sees the police sitting outside of public view utilizing their cell phones.
Prime locations for viewing same are 55th Street just west of LSD, 53rd Street just east of South Shore Drive by the bike path and my favorite spot is the parking lot at 47th and Cornell Drive, the squad car sits there for hours at a time.
We, the taxpayer, pay them a good salary and they do nothing to earn same!

  • Hi MsHydeParker, which park was this? The UCPD doesn't patrol the Point, fyi.

  • Yael Neighborhood parent

I'd encourage you to lodge a complaint with the head of UC security. The University has invested TONS of money trying to keep/attract staff and faculty here (all of the new retail, the UCPD itself, etc...) Crime threatens the return on that investment. If you make some noise to higher-ups, it should draw attention to both the problem of the intimidating groups in the park, and the problem of the response you received when you called UCPD. (They have always responded quickly and appropriately when I've called with similar complaints.)

Shooting in 56th Street near the Lake AGAIN!

Does anyone know what happened? The hotter it gets the more violence increases in East Hyde Park. I hear the activity at the Point is getting suspect too. Where are the alderman, police and outrage citizens?????

  • Long oliday weekend with good weather means the gangbangers will be out in force. If you see anything call 011 immediately and let us hope that the Alderman has some clout and the bike patrols are present.

  • Gene Barth UC employee. Long time Hyde Park resident.

Jogging past "Iowa House" about an hour ago, I saw two plain clothes individuals talking in the open courtyard. Nearby on the lawn was a white Chicago Police van. On the sidewalk was a black City SUV. There was an aluminum latter in the courtyard and the big white guy with gray hair had a tape measure. CPD gathering evidence?

Dear Friends,

I have worked in education and social services for over 25 years including work as a pastor, case manager for the homeless and people living with HIV/AIDS, and as Director of the Blue Gargoyle Community Services Youth Development and Adult Learning Programs.

I founded NewWays Learning and Literacy Consulting because I believe that literacy empowers people to reach their personal goals and full potential. NewWays Learning works with children, youth and adults as they develop the skills to reach their goals for success.

NewWays Learning is now accepting new students for Summer 2014. We only have a few places available. All new students must first go through a learning assessment (about 2 hours)

Learn English (ESL)
Improve Reading, Writing and Math
High School Prep (essay writing)
Middle School Prep
GED Classes
College Prep (SAT/ACT) (Advanced writing)
Computer Skills
Job/Work Place Readiness/Skills (building a resume')

Cost for tutoring is always on a sliding scale. Most students pay only 15-20 dollars an hour. Some students who need financial help pay between 10-15 an hour.

For more information on one to one tutoring contact Shane Desautels, Director of NewWays Learning. www.newwayslearning.com newwayslearning@gmail.com

TLC Management Trial

In December of 2011 TLC Management bought the Flamingo in Hyde Park and took away the services that were promised to tenants in their rental agreement.

The trial date has been set. TLC will claim that they never took away 24 hour 7 day a week security. TLC will also claim that the tenant directory call box that was put in place of a 24/7 security door attendant was equal if not better then a real person.

We all know this not to be true. We have letters to tenants from TLC saying they were ending 24/7 security. Even when TLC placed a temporary door person inside the lobby, people were allowed into the building before tenants were called and asked for their permission to allow anyone in. They also discontinued the monitoring of security cameras in the building.

When TLC took away our security not only did I complain to the city, to the alderman, in letters to TLC, but I also started meetings with tenants in order to win back our security. After three months we won back security and more then 5 employees got their jobs back. I also exercised my right under the Chicago Tenants Rights Ordinance by sending a 14 day notice to TLC. The 14 day notice demanded that TLC return the services of 24/7 security that the Flamingo had promised to provide tenants. If TLC did not return this security is was within my rights under the ordinance to deduct from my rent an amount that would fairly reflect the reduced value of living in the building without 24/7 security.

TLC responded to all my actions by filing for eviction against me which is retaliatory conduct by a landlord. TLC will claim that their filing for eviction was not retaliatory.

We need everyone to be at this trial to hold TLC accountable to the truth. The trial is Monday Jan 27 at 9:30 am at the The Daley Center. Room 1302

Thank you for all your support. http://www.change.org/petitions/tlc-management-should-return-services-promised-to-tenants#

Hello Friends. I closed my former account on EveryBlock, but first changed the name to James Waldo. Waldo was my former cat who passed away and James is one of my middle names and a favorite of mine. Anyway, the case went to trial. There was a pretrial conference with the judge and the lawyers, no one else. The judge decided to do this after hearing the opening statements. The judge recommended to both sides that they walk away and let the case be dismissed/settled. I was happy with this outcome for several reasons which I will not talk about online. However, if you email me, or better if you call me and talk with me I will give you the details. You can then do what you wish with that information but i will not be posting anything about the other side on line, that was my part of the settlement.Call me at7733229668
