Coyote On Metra Tracks

Just a heads up to everyone out there. I heard a howling noise right now, and even before I looked, I told my husband, "I bet that was a coyote." Sure enough, I looked out our door, and there was a coyote on the Metra tracks. This was near 54th and Cornell. So I guess they're venturing further south??? Is there anyone that I'm supposed to call and report this to, or is it just a case of letting them wander around? Worried for the little doggies around here.

  • There have been coyote sightings in Washington Park, Jackson Park and even in Harold Washington Park the last few years.
They normally roam during the hours of darkness and avoid humans. If you see one wave your arms and they will move on.

  • I used to let my cat outdoors until he came home one morning with a his tail frayed and infected. His tail was so damaged that it had to be amputated. The vet said that it appeared he was attacked by another animal such as a cat, raccoon,or opossum. Please keep you cat indoors! My cat still whines by the back door, wanting to go outside, even though he has been neutered.

51st and Cornell?

Anyone know why the flood of police cars on Cornell between 51st and 53rd?

  • If you read the article, this is an accidental shooting, not a murder.

  • The initial Trib article didn't make that clear, but yes, that seems to be the case.

Homeless (?) Woman at 53rd and Lake Park?

I'm posting because of something very disturbing that has been happening over the last several months, but that took an extremely upsetting turn last night, and I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

For several months now, there has been a woman, who I assume to be homeless, sitting on the sidewalk outside of the Binny's Express on the corner of 53rd and the Lake Park side street, across from Harper Court. The first several times I walked past her, she asked very nicely if I had any change to spare, I gave her what I had, and kept going. She was very kind and pleasant. However lately, when I pass her I have not had anything to give her and have told her as much. This is when the problems start. She has become increasingly belligerent when I say that I do not have any change to spare. At first when told no, she would just say nothing. That escalated to yelling profanities after me as I continued walking down the street, which is unpleasant, but it is what it is. Yesterday, however, when told that I had nothing to give her, she responded by yelling profanities and saying, "One of these days I'm gonna punch your big a** out."

The profanities are one thing, but threatening physical harm is quite another. I'm unsure of what to do in this situation. I don't know what this woman's story is, but I will say that for the first time in the three years that I have lived in Hyde Park, this incident has made me feel unsafe. I should not have to be threatened, however serious or not this woman may have been, or cursed at as I walk down the street carrying out my own business.

My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience with this woman? Does anyone know her story? What should I do if this happens again? I was unsure if the police (either CPD or UChicago) should be called. Perhaps I am overreacting and being overly sensitive about the whole thing, but it was truly unsettling. Any advice my neighbors can give will be welcome.

    Sean replies:

Just because someone comes from a wealthy family, that doesn't mean they will not fall down in to immoral, destructive behavior. Leopoldo and Loeb must certainly did, they committed a brutal murder just for...

    The thrill of it.

But they got caught, busted and they didn't do it anymore, at least not in our neighborhood.
