Permit parking along lakefront?

From the Hyde Park Herald:

Hyde Parkers living on the 5400 block of South Shore Drive could be the first in the neighborhood with permit parking. Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) told residents Thursday night, in a meeting at the Shoreland, 5454 S. Shore Dr., that 65 percent of the blocks’ residents had signed a petition requesting permit parking.

Permit parking would allow anyone living on the 5400 block of South Shore Drive block with a car registered to their address to exclusively park on that block between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from May 1 through October 1.

  • @Aflowerlover, it wouldn't effect visitors of the park. The park closes at 11 pm and the permit is essentially for overnight parking - 11 pm to 5 am. So, basically no hanging out at the park after hours.

Thanks for thee update greatly appreciated

Native Foods now open in Hyde Park

From https://fiftythird.uchicago.edu:

Since opening at Harper Court two weeks ago, vegan restaurant Native Foods Café has gotten a welcome reception from Hyde Park, with sales about 20 percent stronger than expected, according to one of the restaurant's owners.

“Our first two weeks have been great, which we didn’t expect since (University of Chicago) students are on spring break,” said Andrea McGinty, co-owner of the Chicago-based restaurant chain.

McGinty said the eatery at 1518 E. Harper Court is seeing a “very high level of takeouts” driven by dinner orders. However, in recent days, more customers have been stopping in for lunch and dining in.

Native Foods’ menu is 100 percent plant-based, includes gluten-free options, and is updated seasonally. Best-selling menu items in Hyde Park so far include the “Rockin’ Morracan Bowl,” “Native Nachos,” and “Native Chicken,” according to McGinty. The restaurant also features “Native Community Days” twice a month, where sales proceeds go to support local non-profit organizations that focus on animal rescue, educating kids about obesity, or community gardens.

Also went to Porkchop for the first time - they are in the midst of their 'soft opening' and the waitress mentioned that the grand opening is going to be in mid April. I had the Pulled chicken sandwich, it was pretty good but $9 for a glass of pino was not so good especially considering they charge less for some of the mixed drinks...

  • The eponymous sandwich (including fries) was $8.95 at lunch and was humongous and delicious. You can get it grilled or fried - I tried grilled. They are slowly filling up their beer tappers. Prices range from $6.00 to $10.00 a glass (that was too much for an Evanston-brewed beer.) Still no 3 Floyds, yet.

Coyote On Metra Tracks

Just a heads up to everyone out there. I heard a howling noise right now, and even before I looked, I told my husband, "I bet that was a coyote." Sure enough, I looked out our door, and there was a coyote on the Metra tracks. This was near 54th and Cornell. So I guess they're venturing further south??? Is there anyone that I'm supposed to call and report this to, or is it just a case of letting them wander around? Worried for the little doggies around here.

There's also a growing coyote population in Jackson Park. We live on the outskirts and saw one loping by our house. I've also heard that they aren't a danger to people, but they are to cats. But I guess if you live in the city, it's safer to have your cats be indoor ones, anyway. I actually think it's exciting to see something wild in the city--I always get a thrill when I see a hawk or falcon. And at least the coyotes don't decide to live in our crawl spaces like racoons!

I don't think actual mace is legal to buy in the city, J, but Ace sells something similar that would probably dissuade an animal.
