57th Street Beech - Garbage Dump Again

I went for a morning walk yesterday/Saturday. I was disappointed to see, once again the 57th street beech was a massive garbage dump!

Mounds of garbage, beer and booze bottles and get this - a full toilet!

The garbage was apparently under the dirty ice/snow block in the Lake.

Please call Alderwoman Hairston's office this week.

I am also going to suggest that the University of Chicago start a private sanitation service similar to the University of Chicago Police Department as the the City of Chicago is simply falling down in providing basic services for things like public safety, education, streets and sanitation.

  • Any speculation as to how it happened? Was some of it covered by snow?

  • There are frequent volunteer workdays out there, where we can all pitch in. I'll get the date/time of the next workday and will post it here.

What's wrong with a bicycle tax?

With the amount of money spent to make Chicago "cyclist friendly," what's wrong with charging a bicycle tax? Those who drive pay annually for city stickers. Why shouldn't cyclists have to do the same?

I am actually part tree hugger so although I really don't like bikers in the street, I appreciate that mode of transportation and own a bike myself. My old bike had turn signals and everything. I was comfy on the sidewalk and followed the rules. I called out as I was set to pass ppl and was kind to walkers. This is not the average biker of today so putting them in the street irritates me. Between watching for rude bikers and folks slamming on their brakes at red lightcamera intersections, my peaceful driving experience can be tense some days. When I do ride, I drive over to the lake path then unload my bike to cruise around there. No venom

  • Happy,
I'm sorry for your anecdotal experience. I'm sure you know that the majority of bikers are probably courteous like you. There may be a contingent of morons who are not but I would like to think this isn't the majority. Motor vehicles and bikes share the same roadways in many of the world's major cities. I'm sure that can also be the case here. Education and accountability are key 😌

Obama Loves New York City

Sneed of the Sun Times has reported in recent weeks that the Obama Library will be located in NYC and today she reported that the President and his wife will reside in NYC when he leaves the Presidentcy.
So much for loyality to the people that supported him for many years in Chicago and gave him so many breaks.
A real slap in the face to his most loyal supporters!

South side dog park

Does anyone else question why the majority of dog parks are on the north side? I live in North Kenwood and it seems to me that Hyde Park, Kenwood, North Kenwood and Bronzeville have tons of dog owners and dog park closer to us would be most appreciated!!!

  • Tracy in Hyde Park Lives in East Hyde Park

The little park by Lake Shore Drive, between 51st and 53rd, is named after the former mayor. The big park west of Cottage Grove is named after the former general and first president. The naming of the big park came first, before the mayor with the same last name was a mayor, so it's just "Washington Park." If you mean the other, then both first and last name must be given. Maybe one day the big park will be renamed, "George Washington Park," to avoid confusion.

FYI we now have a website for Jackson Bark. http://www.jacksonbark.com/ ...please share with all your fellow puparents.

Plus we now have a new lobby/foyer to assist in the safe passage of pups entering and leaving the park.

Also, with spring around the corner, i started re-installing the water stations in each of the four dog parks.
