Lake levels best ever

I tried (with no success) to do some Co Ho Salmon fishing the last week off of the 55th street Point.

I note with great satisfaction that Lake Michigan Water levels have come up, are the highest, healthiest I have seen in 10 years!

This is probably due to the 2 very cold, long winters we have had these last 2 years.

So, there you see - not everything is bad, getting worse. Our great lakes are precious and things are getting better.

  • You must of seen the fences that have been erected by the park district to keep people off of the east end of the Point due to the erosion around the rocks.
We need the Save the Point committee and Alderman Hairston to step forward and demand repairs to the Point.

Bar Louie has been cleaned up

I am pleased to report noticing a vast improvement inside and outside Bar Louie on South Shore Dr. between 55th and 56th.

Bar Louie and the parking lot outside of the Bar used to attract a very loud, criminally prone crowd. There was rampant prostitution in cars in the parking lot and it was just a place where crowds gathered to make noise and trouble.

Bar Louie and the parking lot outside of the Bar used to attract a very loud, criminally prone crowd. There was rampant prostitution in cars in the parking lot and it was just a place where crowds gathered to make noise and trouble.

I've been in Bar Louie many times this last month and I've noticed a real difference - much better crowd, better music, staff is nice and was aware of the bad reputation of the past.

Chicago Police and University of Chicago police seemed to do a great job of dispersing crowds outside last summer. Let's hope they can do the same this summer.

This goes to show that things can be done to improve trouble spots. No one has to be killed or severely beaten by law enforcement, everybody just needs to be proactive.

Thanks everyone who made the calls who stayed firm in promoting a positive neighborhood.

  • The key will be Memorial Day weekend when the folks from outside the neighborhood show up and act up!

    Agreed Joe.

Last year we had an excellent police preparation, check points. Hopefully it will be cold and rainy.

    Joe,

That's another thing I really like about East Hyde Park - there are few surprises.
Most everything bad, negative is very, very easy to predict.

    As the Boyscout Handbook says:

    Be prepared.

57th Street Survey

Seems that this survey was first put online at the beginning of March, but I just learned about it from today's HP Herald article and haven't seen it mentioned here yet.

Herald article: http://hpherald.com/2015/04/08/two-way-traffic-and-new-signage-on-57th-street-to-be-explored-in-online-poll-meeting/
Here's a link to the survey: http://www.secc-chicago.org/primary-news/57charrette

New word of the day (at least for me) Charrette: a meeting in which all stakeholders in a project attempt to resolve conflicts and map solutions.

  • Murray Elementary Language Academy reviewed by a parent

Murray is a terrific school. The school was rated Level 1+, the highest CPS rating a school can earn. The staff is nurturing and parent friendly. The parents are involved all aspects of the school. No school is perfect. Perfection is reached when all parties work together for the students. Aspects of perfection are visible at Murray. And there is still room for growth, no doubt. The school has hired some great new teachers in the middle school. I am still excited about this school, and its vision for improving learning for all students.

  • Harte Elementary School reviewed by a parent

This school is definitely going in the right direction. For the most part the administration and faculty are great and generally care about their students. The main drawback is that there isn't a strong parental involvement with the school.
