Junior roller derby empowers young women in Chicago

Those girls, ranging in age from 8 to 17, meet every Saturday morning to practice roller derby at the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, on the corner of 55th Street and Kenwood Avenue in Chicago. The experience, they say, is empowering.

Personal research may benefit community

Would anyone like to sign up for a neighborhood compost collection service? Pick-up and replacement of a provided 5-gallon bucket will go to feed a local worm farm. Vermicomposting. $10/pick-up or price dependent on pick-up requirements. I would like to start providing such a service on bicycle with trailer, would you be interested in this type of service? Programs can be set up to receive compost in return after a certain amount of food collected.

Support Education

Hello Bronzeville and Hyde Park. My name is Louis Robertson. I'm a 20 year old college student. However I could not attend my second year of college because I was short about $3,500 in tuition cost. I'm now attending Kennedy King but I want to go back to Western Illinois. I'm asking for the community help of helping me raise money to pay WIU so that I can go back next year to finish off my education. You can help be donating money to me on my go fund me account. Condo Management Company

Does anyone have a great condo management company they can recommend that serves the Washington Park/HydePark/Bronzeville area?

Thanks!

  • We use The Building Group to manage our cooperative in Hyde Park and are very happy with them. They manage other buildings in Hyde Park including Vista Homes. Jim Stoller is President and very responsive.

  • Kane Property Management: our condo at 54th and Dorchester switched to Kane from Wolin Levin and never looked back. They are terrific, and relatively cheap.

I'm posting because of something very disturbing that has been happening over the last several months, but that took an extremely upsetting turn last night, and I'm curious if anyone else has had a similar experience.

For several months now, there has been a woman, who I assume to be homeless, sitting on the sidewalk outside of the Binny's Express on the corner of 53rd and the Lake Park side street, across from Harper Court. The first several times I walked past her, she asked very nicely if I had any change to spare, I gave her what I had, and kept going. She was very kind and pleasant. However lately, when I pass her I have not had anything to give her and have told her as much. This is when the problems start. She has become increasingly belligerent when I say that I do not have any change to spare. At first when told no, she would just say nothing. That escalated to yelling profanities after me as I continued walking down the street, which is unpleasant, but it is what it is. Yesterday, however, when told that I had nothing to give her, she responded by yelling profanities and saying, "One of these days I'm gonna punch your big a** out."

The profanities are one thing, but threatening physical harm is quite another. I'm unsure of what to do in this situation. I don't know what this woman's story is, but I will say that for the first time in the three years that I have lived in Hyde Park, this incident has made me feel unsafe. I should not have to be threatened, however serious or not this woman may have been, or cursed at as I walk down the street carrying out my own business.

My question is, has anyone else had a similar experience with this woman? Does anyone know her story? What should I do if this happens again? I was unsure if the police (either CPD or UChicago) should be called. Perhaps I am overreacting and being overly sensitive about the whole thing, but it was truly unsettling. Any advice my neighbors can give will be welcome.

"Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were 2 prodigies (University of Chicago students) from wealthy families who wanted to commit the perfect crime. "

    Sean replies:

Just because someone comes from a wealthy family, that doesn't mean they will not fall down in to immoral, destructive behavior. Leopoldo and Loeb must certainly did, they committed a brutal murder just for...

    The thrill of it.

But they got caught, busted and they didn't do it anymore, at least not in our neighborhood.

Lost Cat, Small and Grey

Hi, our cat ran out the door yesterday night around midnight. She is small and grey and isn't wearing a collar. We live at 53rd and Harper, so it is likely that she is still around that area. If you see her, please e-mail me at jenna.r.christensen@gmail.com.

  • KML

Hi neighbor. I live in your building (same courtyard) and will keep an eye out for this cat. I was out with my dog about 12:45 that night but I didn't see her in the courtyard.

  • Thanks so much, but she has actually been found! One of my neighbors brought her by last night, she had been in the stairwell early that morning and she had kept her in her apartment until she got home from work. But thanks again! I'm going to remove this post now.

  • So glad to hear that she has been found! I live in your building as well and was keeping an eye out each time I came and went yesterday.

Once you get past the fact that you paid five dollars for an ice cream cone, it’s all gravy. Cute store layout combined with a location right next to Harper Theater (5238 South Harper Avenue) makes an excellent movie/ice cream date easy to finagle.

Beats the price of prepared food by a wide margin. Produce selection and closer-to-campus location are marginally better than rival Treasure Island (1526 East 55th Street).
