Crime in the city

Has anyone noticed whenever the media claims the rates are down, there's suddenly more shootings going on? Just wondering......

  • MrC Raised in, and serving the Englewood Community

It seems that they spoke out, but only with anonymity. They are similar to members of the community in that they also fear retribution.

  • jan in little village long time resident

MrC, you are right! People do not want to get involved, because they fear they'll be next! It's sad that this is what our society has become! But as you also stated, they can remain anonymous. But then you also have to feel comfortable with the police you're talking to, who are they protecting?

Which Alderman Do I Go To?

I am looking to speak with an alderman, and have called the 12th, 15th, and 16th ward aldermans, but all seem to tell me that they don't deal with our community. Who should I be calling? Thanks.

  • Lucy Lucy, 56, longtime resident.

Call the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners at 1-312-269-7900. Give them your address and they will be able to tell you your ward and Alderman's name and number at City Hall and their ward office. The information they give you WILL BE CORRECT. When you call your alderman advise them that the Board of Elections gave you this information.

Looking to Move

Looking to move to the area. Pros? Cons? Suggestions? Helpful hints? I am a 25 year old student (white, female) and would like to live alone.

  • You can do what we did when looking for a place.

    1. Drive around the neighborhood.

    2. Drive down the alleys.

    3. What is the laundry mat status? Overpopulated with singles or families.

    4. Grocery stores accessible?

    5. What is public transportation like?

    6. Check out the Elementary School ratings. Look it up under Illinois School Report Cards.

    7. Check out the community news ... http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/back-of-yards-brighton-park?gclid=CMmv5rCNvb0CFUVgMgodug0Aqg

    Good Luck.

  • I have a one bedroom small house for rent near the orange line on 35th and archer. McKinley Park is much better than Back of the Yards.

It can be, yes. When you really think about it crime can happen anywhere. There's a difference between crime and a crime problem. Lincoln Park has crime. It doesn't have a crime problem. Auburn-Gresham has a crime problem. Humboldt Park has a crime problem. Uptown is beginning to have a crime problem. South Shore has a crime problem too.

If you decide to move this way, please consider a place near the Drive.

  • Anna in Hyde Park Real estate attorney

kslatte, like many neighborhoods, there are better and worse 'pockets' but yes overall the crime stats for South Shore are pretty depressing. Having said that my boyfriend's auntie owns a home there, across from a beautiful park (not in the supposed safe zone of 67th-75th). She commutes to U. of C. hospital in Hyde Park but bought in South shore b/c it was more affordable. She has lived there for close to 10 years and whenever we have visited, day or night, have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe...FWIT.
