broken snowblower

my snowblower will not start. does anybody know of anyone in the area that fixes stuff like this? and does a good job.

  • Clean the carburator. You probably left fuel in it from last year.

  • Stanley, here is an online listing of places when I 'googled' "snowblower repair, southwest-side Chicago":

SW ACE Hardware, 6908 W. Archer Avenue
AUSTIN Hardware, 6146 S. Archer Avenue

Also, while it was too late to help fix our aging snowblower with this product (STABIL) a neighbor swore by it for keeping a snowblower starting/running well from season-to-season. This is what the neighbor said about it:

    "I don't know if
you have ever heard of STABIL. I have used it for years. You can add it
to any Gas left in a machine over several seasons making it easy to
start again by protecting the engine against old gas, and you don't have
to em pty when putting it away. I used it this past year and it started
right up. I did forget to put it in in the spring, but added it in in
the winter before i started up."

    Good luck!

Body Shop

I need a recommendation for a good body shop in Brighton Park area. Suggestions?

  • i went to cals collision center on 38th st. approx 2900 block. they are professional, and slick, and acted like we'd be friends for life. the work was good. but when i went back with an unrelated and much smaller issue, they wouldn't give me the time of day. i don't think i'd go back.

  • I had a small job done at Autos R Us. They're right by the 35th/Archer Orange line stop, so it was pretty convenient to drop off the car and head for the train. It was not a complicated job or anything, but they did a good job.

  • Philips Auto Body 4822 S. Kedzie...never had a problem with them..and lately I have also been using Rays Auto Services 6214 S. Central - very reasonably priced

Traffic Control - why Bridgeport and not Brighton Park?

Driving down Halsted from 30th to 39th where construction is going on at the intersection of 31st and Halsted there were traffic control personnel at 31st, the next light going south which I think is 33rd, and another at 35th street. Traffic is limited to one lane going south. My point is WHY (?) the safety measures and visible traffic control for this four (4) block area when Pershing Road construction, Archer, and Ashland construction DID NOT have any visible traffic control? In this area all roads are main arteries.

  • It's about pedestrian foot traffic.

  • it's kind of like when you call the police and they say they'll send someone out when the resources become available.

  • This has been going on for so long...it's our aldermen..it goes to show that their main concern is not with their neighborhoods. People need to realize that things such as "health fairs" and "drives" are only ways of self promotion. The companies pay to participate in the fairs. They promote themselves...

This has been going on for so long...it's our aldermen..it goes to show that their main concern is not with their neighborhoods. People need to realize that things such as "health fairs" and "drives" are only ways of self promotion. The companies pay to participate in the fairs. They promote themselves by offering simple services such as blood pressure readings and flu shots. The raffle prizes that you receive are also provided by the companies as part of their fee. These are all tactics used to make people think that they are doing something for the community. I recall someone else previously posting a similar response when I brought up this issue...they said that anything past Roosevelt was not of Rahms concern - I totally agree...its all political.

I turned around to see who she was screaming at this time. She kept saying “ PICK IT UP, PICK IT UP” I was very confused why she was yelling at me when my dog didn't do anything there. I told her there was nothing to pick up but I always clean up after my dog and even other dogs in the neighborhood. I showed her the poop bag I had in my hand and the rolls of poop bags I had in my pocket. She would not calm down and kept rambling on. She then got the bartender involved and another older man involved and they were repeating what she just screamed at me. They were very rude, hostile, and violent. I was verbally harassed over a petty issue. If they treated me like this I can't imagine the way they treat their customers.

  • Now we should all yell back at them to pick it up. Pick up all the bottles of alcohol their customers throw on the lawn while standing outside the bar drinking.

  • Bonasera Pro communist pro euthanasia

    Where's this place at?

  • the bad dog owners give the rest a bad name. just like any other group. myself, after stepping in it, tend to watch all dog owners in front of my house. but i don't yell at them.

I think he was forced to take his commercial off the air. He is the one that belongs in jail. pure evil.

New Plaza on Archer and Pershing?

I'm not sure if that is what they are building on the corner of Archer and Pershing, but what if they do. What kind of pros and cons is our neighborhood looking at?

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

Isn't this going to be an LA Fitness, or a similar type of fitness center?

LA Fitness is one of the names being mentioned, but the parcel surely will have room for more stores, if they can find tenants. But unless every residence on the southwest side has people living in the basement, attic and garage, I don't know where the customers will come from.

There is a large piece of land on the west side of Pulaski around 41st that is being developed, and has a sign advertising 3 future tenants, the only name which I remember is PetSmart.

And the land on the southwest corner of 31st and Kedzie was announced to be the site of another retail complex that would have some connection to St Anthony Hospital.

And there is a sign at the southwest corner of 47th and California advertising the availabilty of the land where the old bottling plant used to be.

Myriam, the time to be concerned about a vacant parcel or unoccupied building is much earlier in its history, not when the area is bulldozed and the signs go up. By then, it is a done deal.

So now you might think about the tall building west of the Dunkin' Donuts on Archer and Pershing, It used to be a gym for the Irish parish of St Agnes. The parish was merged into Our Lady of Fatima, the church torn down, the old rectory is used by an order of nuns for community outreach, the school is part of CPS. But what will happen to that gym which used to host bingo, and apparently has not been utilized for years?

Traffic 47th & Keeler

Hello, the traffic in the morning is crazy. Crossing 47th street down Keeler is merely impossible. There is a sign that clearly reads " do not block intersection", but nobody seems to care. Is takes me 15 minutes to cross 47th street because nobody wants to let me through. Mind you, I don't like to be an aggressive driver. I think having stop signs on the intersection of 47th and Keeler can help, or at least traffic patrol. Who can I suggest this to? Thank you.

  • Best thing would probably be to contact the school administration or attend a board meeting if they have them, and bring up the issue. Or, let the Alderman know.

  • Mary on the block mommy mode

Thank you all. I will definitely be addressing this to the alderman and school administration.

He is seriously mentally ill, and there is very little that anyone can do, under the current state of the laws, which allow even those with no grip on reality to make their own decisions on how to live. At least as long as they are not committing any crimes.

He has been around there for years. I think when it becomes unbearably cold he may find a place indoors, but otherwise, that is his life.

It does seem rather odd to me that he spends a lot of time on Archer, as he does not panhandle. At least not that I have seen. Maybe people just help him out without being asked. Years ago I knew some older people who would provide some assistance, and in the hot summers we would freeze water in plastic bottles and give it to him.

I think the only thing that non-professionals can do is to educate themselves about mental illness.

  • Guadalupe Garcia LongTime Brighton Park Neighbor

He's been part of the neighborhood landscape for a long time. I have never known him to be violent, beg or act erratic. Some folks have no support system and fall on unfortunate circumstances. Some choose to live this way for reasons that are beyond our understanding. I imagine a meal, a warm beverage, cold weather gear or even a kind word would not be unwelcome. My brother speaks to him on occasion and he once offered my brother a sandwich.

Great looking out for one another.

  • He use to be staged at the abandon building next door to Dunkin Donuts on Archer. One time he was removed then the entrance way was covered with a chain link fence. The homeless man returned and parked across the street, near the gas station.

Yes he's been there so long, I believe almost a decade or more.

Whenever the winter weather gets dangerous, I call for him to be taken off the street for his safety. I'm not sure if others call, but he always finds his way back.

It will be interesting to see what happens when the new shopping strip opens up where the old Archer Bus Barn was, maybe he's just a fixture to the neighborhood.

Cigar tubes?

I am looking for a few (1 or 2 dozen) metal / aluminum cigar tubes, any ideas?
