If two- count 'em, 2-- Starbucks (and we all know how expensive their drinks and other store items are-- items that we don't REALLY need to survive- coffee addicts not included here) that will exist only several blocks apart can make it in this area, why not one Whole Foods (that sells food--and lots of more nutritious, organic food, that we all need to survive-- that would 'do a body good"...and a family too)? And what about catching those health-minded Midway tourists to buy their 'health-food' at a
    nearby W.F.'s.?

  • Chet 606 Rogers Park, NOHavana, CE

There are plenty of people in and out of AH that would appreciate quality food. Plus the traffic to/from Midway and commuters who drive to AH to jump on the Orange Line. Not everyone needs or is expected to shop at WF, but for those that want to, bring it on!

TAMALE LADY

there has been a lady selling tamales on 47th and keating, is there a way to stop this?
do we really want 47th to become 26th st?

And before you cry for help, those "poor mom and pop" stores are doing just fine. There's nothing that says you can't have both. And as for the person selling food outside using the alley and not washing his hands .....wake up! That happens in "brick and mortar" places too!
You really care about brick and mortar stores? Then help your community get rid of the criminal element first... THEN the competition.

Christian, Consider investing in what one wants first 'the light' , THEN addressing what one doesn't want 'the Dark'. Concentrating on the dark or the 'criminal element' throws the energy and focus on the criminal element draining our energy and creating a void. The light needs to be there and ready to fill this void otherwise other criminal elements do. Build what one wants then watch these dark elements fade away.

Sarcasm is also a tool for the dark. Funny in stand up or youtube where one could see facial expressions and tone of voice, but on blogs, EB, email, sarcasm unconsciously tears people down. This is often used by politicians as over time it leads to hopelessness. Then they came in with a solution, or promises of a solution, or a part of a solution and bingo, they get the votes and the problems continue.

Most effective community activism happens with positive desires are expressed and fought for.

I suspect the original poster vanny79 is one of the last hold-outs of the traditional SW-side efforts to keep things from changing as I pick up a racial tone in his 26th st comment.

Let me know where one could pick up some organic tamales on the SW-side & I'll share a meal with you and pick up the tab.

    Focus on the light.

Traffic 47th & Keeler

Hello, the traffic in the morning is crazy. Crossing 47th street down Keeler is merely impossible. There is a sign that clearly reads " do not block intersection", but nobody seems to care. Is takes me 15 minutes to cross 47th street because nobody wants to let me through. Mind you, I don't like to be an aggressive driver. I think having stop signs on the intersection of 47th and Keeler can help, or at least traffic patrol. Who can I suggest this to? Thank you.

  • Best thing would probably be to contact the school administration or attend a board meeting if they have them, and bring up the issue. Or, let the Alderman know.

  • Mary on the block mommy mode

Thank you all. I will definitely be addressing this to the alderman and school administration.

Also, much of the traffic on 47th I suspect is people avoiding the train grade crossing on Archer & Knox (but I like prefer grade crossings over a massive dump of concrete like on North Ave in the West suburbs) AND traffic trying to get up and over the Stevenson I55 Expressway. It would be ideal, yes a wide span, to have several overpasses from From Forest View, Stickney, Cicero, to 47th without any ramps to/from the Stevenson - like along the Eisenhower Expy in Berwyn. Yes outside the 12th, but it would significantly positively impact the quality of life along the SW-side including your ward.

the world, affects the nation, the states, the cities, the communities, the neighborhoods, the families, the individuals....YOU and ME. Thus I address this topic up for consideration:

I can't say I was depressed, but I was seriously disappointed, and disheartened, not only to learn Rauner ($40 million-and-counting-a-year, Rauner) won the IL governorship, but that the DEM party was turned topsy-turvy on its head, and that the REPS virtually 'hijacked' our government as a democratic republic!

Definitely, I was suspicious of Rauner's win being rammed through so fast (I truly am not a fan of either party, but prefer Dems any day, to what Reps offer, esp. THIS MAN who is going to be our state nightmare-- starting with his promise to push through that Keystone Pipeline, along with all his Rep cronies now in office.

But, how to wade through all the information and disinformation, all the months of campaigning, etc. to trace where it all took this disastrous turn? Well, fortunately, another person has looked into it, and here, I post a link to an article a friend sent me just yesterday, I couldn't have researched and stated things better by this fellow, so here is a link to his full article (and well worth reading):

Tagging at Edwards

I work at Richard Edwards Elementary. We are having an issue with tagging at our school. In particular, an individual keeps writing "Sonic" along with gang symbols on our building at 4815 S. Karlov. We are calling graffiti-busters ASAP and painting or cleaning off what we can immediately. I thought Everyblock might just be another way to reach out to the community for ideas on how to help prevent this or catch the offenders. You are welcome to PM me if you like. I really enjoy working in this community and the people seem to really care about their neighborhood's appearance. We would like to stop this from happening at our school.

Thanks!

  • I have been reporting graffiti/gang tagging for years and then observing when it is covered over. I have been reporting graffiti/gang tagging for years and then observing when it is covered over. Except for a few longer delays (when Rahm the Bomb made the stupid decision to rework---read...slow down-- city graffiti removal), MOST of the tagging I reported got tended to rather quickly and most of the time was re-covered again and again. So, now that you're aware of what to do AH Teacher, keep on it, and thanks
for caring and helping to clean up this neighborhood....

Now, that we have the AHCA attention in this topic, are you aware that the 'art' that
is painted on the wall behind the mechanic's shop on 51st street (between Keeler and Tripp) attracts gang-bangers that often hang out and watch the 'Artiste" paint that junk
    on the wall?

I've personally witnessed 'gangsters' drive up (you can't miss 'em) in decked out cars
to talk to this guy. And so much of the junk he paints on this wall-- if studied closely--
appears to be racial, gangstuh jargon, images and gang names subltly woven into
    the 'art'.

If the AHCA is SO concerned about gangs, tagging, neighborhood crime, etc., then THEY need to monitor this wall (the best thing would be to get the owner to stop having this wall 'tagged' like this). We don't need such junk-- passing as 'art'-- that'll be the day-- it's ridiculous and attracts more criminal elements into Archer Heights.

  • IMHO ... Tagging is a symptom of the problem. Can't cure diseases with Tylenol. Report gang activity to 911. Attend CAPS meetings. Organize your neighbors.

Old Warsaw Deli on Archer & Lockwood

The Old Warsaw Deli on Archer and Lockwood had been empty for years now since it burned down but recently it has gotten new windows and is being cleaned. Does anyone know what, if anything, is going on? Are they going to finally open something? I really hope so, I'm tired of that old abandoned useless building!
