TAMALE LADY

there has been a lady selling tamales on 47th and keating, is there a way to stop this?

Taking down the motel would not help. It will be left as gravel for years waiting on a "DEVELOPMENT" which will never open. It frustrates me that the first thing people coming to Midway Airport see is a bunch of empty buildings and the last thing they see are a bunch of empty buildings. This area is tore up and needs to get updated just like downtown LaGrange did. That is what this area should look like all of Archer should look like it! There is history here and we are making history in continuously letting this area go to bleep! How long has it been since the Claire Courts went down to open up some great new development that will help out the area?...

  • TBH New McKinley Park neighbor

McKinley Park seems to be donut-holed by several active SSA (Special Service Areas) for business improvement and neighborhood transformation projects. I'm sure there is a good explanation as to why - likely no one to take it on, or lack of funding. Having an active SSA would certainly be a good direction for our neighborhood. It's all about root cause and probably has nothing to do with the lady's delicious tamales! Entrepreneurs are good for the neighborhood.

the world, affects the nation, the states, the cities, the communities, the neighborhoods, the families, the individuals....YOU and ME. Thus I address this topic up for consideration:

I can't say I was depressed, but I was seriously disappointed, and disheartened, not only to learn Rauner ($40 million-and-counting-a-year, Rauner) won the IL governorship, but that the DEM party was turned topsy-turvy on its head, and that the REPS virtually 'hijacked' our government as a democratic republic!

Definitely, I was suspicious of Rauner's win being rammed through so fast (I truly am not a fan of either party, but prefer Dems any day, to what Reps offer, esp. THIS MAN who is going to be our state nightmare-- starting with his promise to push through that Keystone Pipeline, along with all his Rep cronies now in office.

But, how to wade through all the information and disinformation, all the months of campaigning, etc. to trace where it all took this disastrous turn? Well, fortunately, another person has looked into it, and here, I post a link to an article a friend sent me just yesterday, I couldn't have researched and stated things better by this fellow, so here is a link to his full article (and well worth reading):

Tagging at Edwards

I work at Richard Edwards Elementary. We are having an issue with tagging at our school. In particular, an individual keeps writing "Sonic" along with gang symbols on our building at 4815 S. Karlov. We are calling graffiti-busters ASAP and painting or cleaning off what we can immediately. I thought Everyblock might just be another way to reach out to the community for ideas on how to help prevent this or catch the offenders. You are welcome to PM me if you like. I really enjoy working in this community and the people seem to really care about their neighborhood's appearance. We would like to stop this from happening at our school.

Thanks!

  • I have been reporting graffiti/gang tagging for years and then observing when it is covered over. I have been reporting graffiti/gang tagging for years and then observing when it is covered over. Except for a few longer delays (when Rahm the Bomb made the stupid decision to rework---read...slow down-- city graffiti removal), MOST of the tagging I reported got tended to rather quickly and most of the time was re-covered again and again. So, now that you're aware of what to do AH Teacher, keep on it, and thanks
for caring and helping to clean up this neighborhood....

Now, that we have the AHCA attention in this topic, are you aware that the 'art' that
is painted on the wall behind the mechanic's shop on 51st street (between Keeler and Tripp) attracts gang-bangers that often hang out and watch the 'Artiste" paint that junk
    on the wall?

I've personally witnessed 'gangsters' drive up (you can't miss 'em) in decked out cars
to talk to this guy. And so much of the junk he paints on this wall-- if studied closely--
appears to be racial, gangstuh jargon, images and gang names subltly woven into
    the 'art'.

If the AHCA is SO concerned about gangs, tagging, neighborhood crime, etc., then THEY need to monitor this wall (the best thing would be to get the owner to stop having this wall 'tagged' like this). We don't need such junk-- passing as 'art'-- that'll be the day-- it's ridiculous and attracts more criminal elements into Archer Heights.

  • IMHO ... Tagging is a symptom of the problem. Can't cure diseases with Tylenol. Report gang activity to 911. Attend CAPS meetings. Organize your neighbors.

Old Warsaw Deli on Archer & Lockwood

The Old Warsaw Deli on Archer and Lockwood had been empty for years now since it burned down but recently it has gotten new windows and is being cleaned. Does anyone know what, if anything, is going on? Are they going to finally open something? I really hope so, I'm tired of that old abandoned useless building!

I live two blocks away on Kolin and there are days when i misplaced schoolt takes ten minutes to get onto 47th from 49th street. Big decisions are made without examining the impact. Alderman Burke had said several times at the Archer Heights Civic Association meeting that nothing would be brought to the community unless the people want it! I dont recall being asked if we wanted a huge school placed in our neighborhood that effects the quality of life of all of us.So what is the Aldermans plan for getting input from his constituients? Ive never been informed of a committe that looks at these things Have you?
its time to hold the Alderman accountable for his decisions. We need to make more demands of him and his staff to responsibly seek input from the community.especially when he is spending our tax dollar without a careful examination of its impact..like the UNO charter school's traffic debacle!
How about holding a TIF illumination to show the neighborhood exactly where our money has gone? The Civics Lab has all the information already. tom tresser will charge a small fee to present al the info. I know that Ald. B will not expose this information. Ive already asked and he sent me a link to a website that does not even work!

  • Chet 606 Rogers Park, NOHavana, CE

I remember when the past president of the AHCA strongly supported UNO, including arguing for it at the meetings and in the news letters. It was a time when many blindly followed the lead of the AHCA. It was Burke after all (when not Madigan or Zalewski) Once I find my copy of the local paper showing the president, vice and others of the AHCA proudly standing with Burke & others at the opening of UNO, I'll attach it here. And I'm not even an elected official on the SW-side. Maybe in the future (4 years). Until then, whoever is the next SW-side aldermen, feel free to take this idea and claim it as your own. Nice work Alderman __?__ (fill in the blank). The rush is on for the first 23rd ward candidate to put out campaign literature featuring a bicycle in the background. Someone please send me a copy!

Re: Comment by Chet606, above, this is what I heard from Deborah Shore on the radio over the weekend, in reply to just what you proposed:

Ms. Shore (of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District/MWRD), was a guest on the show this past Sunday morning, and answered a caller (who also proposed such a trail/bike path along this same stretch of S&S corridor). She replied that, she was not aware of ANY proposal to for such a trail in that area.

(and then added-- my own words here but this is the idea she communicated-- that, this area is mainly owned by the MWRD and leased out to various Chicago-land companies, and that it is still of economic viability to lease out for the transporting over-sized goods (i.e. their are still barge loading docks along this route), etc.

In effect-- and in my opinion/conclusion-- she was saying that there were no civic plans to develop all or any of this land for such public use and benefit to the communities surrounding-- that the profit motive for a few businesses still using said docks (and paying the MWRD rent) took precedence over public benefits (where have we heard this tiresome story before)!

(BTW, the radio show I heard this exchange on, is called: the Mike Nowak show, which is primarily dedicated to local gardening talk/tips, but also addresses local environmental concerns. That morning, the topic was about flooding in our area, the problems it causes citizens, etc., due mainly to the eroding underground infrastructure of the city. It was a very interesting program, and I would recommend Everyblockers tune in:
