Church 50th & Kedvale

What do you guys know about the church on the corner of 50th and Kedvale? I'll be the first person to tell you to respect others, especially what they believe in, however in this case I have to say I really think they have no respect for the neighbors. Having service at 1:00 am, really??? In the middle of service you have cars burning rubber for 30 mins straight and taking kids joy riding, while a bunch yell out go...

Having service at 1:00 am, really??? In the middle of service you have cars burning rubber for 30 mins straight and taking kids joy riding, while a bunch yell out go faster go faster. I had to call the police on Wednesday/Thursday night because it was like 1:30 AM and I couldn't sleep. It's not a one time incident, it's an on going problem that I've discussed with the neighbors but how do you tell a church, hey it's cool you like to have service really late and all but keep it down when you guys are coming out because this is a working class neighborhood and I wouldn't like to tell my boss church goers didn't let me sleep last night.

R Lau, I know you mentioned your work schedule does not allow you to attend meetings, but you should also contact and join the Archer Heights Civic Association (community group that represents your neighborhood) as they will help. Their number is 773-843-2232 and there are other AHCA members on your block.

About two years ago the AHCA got reports of this same type of problem at that church and worked with CAPS to get the issue resolved. Things did quiet down and up until now, the AHCA has not heard further complaints. Also, speak with your neighbors and ask them to go to CAPS and AHCA meetings. But for your own personal safety I would not recommend you contact the church yourself. (Sorry Neighbor Vol – I know you might disagree on this).

The church leader should ALREADY be aware of this problem and may be sympathetic to you. Besides, what type of church leader would even allow this kind of activity in front of their church? But if you contact them directly you might be portrayed as “the complainer across the street, next door (wherever you live in relation to the church)” and may become the target of reprisals from those that are doing the activity you described. This is where the AHCA and CAPS can be helpful as they can speak/act as a group in your favor.

As NV said, you should also contact the office of Alderman Burke – 773-471-1414 – and complain about this problem. Also as NV said, your first line of defense is 911 and you can ask the call taker to remain anonymous. Use 911 and urge your neighbors to do the same. You do not have to put up with such activity. Good luck.

  • Every single one of you guys, thanks a lot.

SW-side Continues to Bury Head in Sand as Gov Quinn Gives $50,000,000 for Trails

As a former resident of Archer Heights and a former board member of the Archer Heights Civic Association, .... I told you so!

http://www.dot.il.gov/press/1%2030%2013%20ITEP%20-%20RELEASE.pdf

When will the leaders of the Sw-side wake up? When will the people of the SW-side (Archer Heights, Garfield Ridge, Clearing) wake up? When will the leaders of the Sw-side wake up? When will the people of the SW-side (Archer Heights, Garfield Ridge, Clearing) wake up? There was a reason why I championed for a bicycle and nature path for many years. There was a reason why I repeatedly sought to meet with Ald.Burke, Ald. Zalewski, Cong. Lipinski. There was a reason why I repeatedly tried to get the 'leaders' of the AHCA to support a bicycle path. If only for the reason to give energetic youth someplace to blow off steam rather than by breaking into garages and other 'crime'. But then the local papers wouldn't have much to write about.

Everyone knows (or they find out the hard way after years of trying) that to get anything done in Archer Heights one needs to have the 'leaders' figuratively present the idea on a platter of promissory votes to who ever is the alderman at the time (pick one from the above). The more pomposity the better. Yes?

One prostitute, two prostitute, three prostitute, four. Apparently there isn't enough time between counting prostitutes on 47th & Cicero or trying to get a 'senior discount' from the local politicians to champion any other cause.

The SW-side, Archer Heights specifically is the land where politicians go to retire before they retire. It's a community where one with just a HS education is comfortable. Check out the last census. Wasn't Gov Quinn a guest at the AHCA meeting earlier this year?

A bicycle path people. It's easy. Have the conversation, interest and preliminary design on the shelf ready to go for moments like this!

Article from the April Archer Heights Civic Association Newsletter.

The Greater Chicago Food Depository informed The Archer Heights Civic Asociation that a Model Pantry has been established for residents in Archer Heights who may be in need.

At the on-site food pantry residents of our neighborhood, both individuals and families in need of food assistance will be able to choose from a variety of fresh produce and shelf-stable items. The area covered by this food pantry is slightly different from our community’s boundary: North – Stevenson Expressway, South – 54th Street, East – Central Park Ave. (3600 West), and West – Knox (4600 West) but the actual Archer Heights boundary is Cicero Avenue – 4800 West.

The location of the pantry is in the Greater Chicago Food Depository – 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place (use the Keeler Avenue entrance) and will be open every Saturday starting March 8th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Archer Heights residents will be allowed one visit per month and must bring proof of residency. For more information please call 773-247-FOOD.

  • This is very good information. Everybody in Archer Heights needs to pass this info around as some people are afraid or embarrassed to admit they need help. By spreading the word, people can anonymously go to the food pantry.

Thank you AHG for posting this.

Blocked tub drain

Does anyone out there know the best way to unblock a bathtub drain. Mine is soooooo slow, it's driving me nuts......thanks!

  • Rita Concerned gram

Chet......I'll take it easy on the boiling water now that it's going pretty good. I didn't use bleach, I opted for vinegar. I'll use the baking soda and vinegar regularly now. Thanks for all your good advice.

Here is a good idea of what you need to keep bath tub drain clear, same or similar device available at most hardware stores: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/hair-catcher

Blocked tub drain

I did the hangar thing (gag) and got some gunk (gag again) then I loaded the drain with about a quart of vinegar.......then taking another suggestion I boiled more water then is in my pool (ok, not really, but lots) and after letting the vinegar sit for two hours I dumped the boiling water down and lo and behold, I have a very well running drain!!!!! Thanks again everyone.....as you all can tell I never had this problem before. Now that I know how to handle it, I won't have this problem again!!!!

Status Hearing for 5173 South Archer

On Tuesday April 29, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. in Room 1107 in the Daley Center there will be a hearing in regards to the bar located on the corner of Archer and Kostner which has been shut down since Sept 2013.

Need neighboring support to keep this bar shut down. This bar has been a neighborhood problem since it opened and even though they had security 3 people were shot outside of the bar in Sept 2013.

  • Kath Kath

What was the name of the bar? Sounds like its a nuisance

  • Start a petition I can help....

  • The name of the bar is El Palenque and it was shut down in Sept 2013 for 70 building code violations. Looking for people to attend the court hearing on Tues April 29, 2014 and Yes would love to get a petition started to keep this bar closed.

News for all neighborhoods re: new city ordinance

Just wanting to celebrate the passage of the city ordinance that now prohibits
any Chicago pet store from purchasing and selling 'puppy mill puppies'.
Such puppy mills are animal-abuse abominations-- barbaric and archaic-- their time

"Pet stores in Chicago will be barred from selling dogs, cats and rabbits unless the animals come from shelters."

There are other local Chicago-land pet-stores that do not now (and/or never have) sold such bred animals-- it is fitting to appreciate and support such local businesses who sell pet-supplies only.

And remember, if you want (and can be fully responsible for a pet) there are
so many local and nationwide shelters from which to adopt animals who are just as loving and worthy of our compassionate care and companionship.

I never paid/bought a pet. All the birds and dogs I had were sort of hand me downs. or a sort of gift from folks that could no longer Keep them.

police patrols

Does anyone see any police patrols on the side streets in archer heights? I have gone days and never see anything very very rare to see a patrol car "patrolling" Just saying I think alot of crime could be prevented if we had more patrolling going on and less with ticket quotas. It is a very nice area I hate to see it go the way of so many others with gangs and sh*t you can ask for more patrols but it never happens.

Neighbor Volunteer. How come ArcherHeightsGuy doesn't want to play? He just took his ball and went home. Daddy said it wasn't nice to tell Barbara to go fly a kite like that. Shouldn't he, SWOLDtimer and the other leaders of the gang, the Archer Heights Civic Association, sorry the 'club' help Barbara and all the other members who voted and played like they wanted us to play?

AHG gets mad. Yuk. I think he is two tired to play any more. Next time I'm picking you to be our prezident. And I don't even like girls. How come there has never been a girl president of the AHCA? AHG has good spelling but I'm picking someone that bakes cookies for every meeting. That's a reel leader.

Growth and quality-of-life growth issues DO NOT come from a police force. They come from active engagement in doing what one wants and believes in. Again, the dominant group of 'leaders' in AH did such a good job, and I really mean it, that they became the dominant voice for many years. They snuffed out any competition e.g., a local chamber of commerce. In good times they rightly took pride and shown in the limelight. However, limelight is addictive. (I suspect there is a more sinister and effective political reason but I'll save this for some other time). They however failed to constantly re-adjust their leadership and welcome participation from the generations behind them unless it was to further their own agenda of fear, senior issues and not changing. So now, as AH went down so much, they are now trying to deflect blame and responsibility, on CAPS.

My invitation for discussion still holds.

    Well said Chet.
