Hello,

I was wondering what a good place to live in Chicago that isn't too far from mount sinai hospital. My budget seems to only allow me to look at places in the south like bronzeville. I am a single female so any advice would be appreciated!

I noticed there is green fencing up on 47th and 48th Calumet. Also there is construction going on inside the green fence on 47th Calumet. Does anyone know what they are building on those blocks?

One huge problem and opposition to change in the neighborhood is reflected by the convenience store on 43rd and Indiana which is relatively new. It would never be acceptable for a store to be in the Hyde Park area with huge signs on the side of the building saying we accept Link and disco lights around the window... In this day and age where Walmart, Sam's Club and Costco accept the Link card, does this establishment really believe they have to advertise in such a tacky way that they also accept the card. It seems it would only be necessary to have the gawdy Link and lottery signs if it DID NOT provide those services. We need to insist that the business owners show respect for our community, not stereotype what they think is reflective of the entire area.

We cannot always be seen as bickering, combative, non inviting and all exclusive in order to attract to the area what we need most. Let us find areas of agreement and act on them and when one good thing leads to the next well we know what I mean. There was an announcement by the Mayor in office now that this is an area of high interest and he intended to infuse much needed attention to "Bronzeville" and so far there seems to be something to this, with the announcements to set up Minority businesses with established institutions. Now in my book this is what we have been calling out for, we are never going to argree on everything, but let us agree on this.

  • Apple Jaxx Pissing people off not once, but twice...

Could the city quietly be the ones lobbying for this? It could be an enormous cash grab for Chicago if this became law. The fines would tally in the millions and not only would this cripple many HOA's, they would also have the additional financial burden of maintaining these systems. I would support outfitting new construction over 5 or 6 stories with sprinkler systems, with all pre-existing structures being grandfathered in with a waiver. This sounds like another bureaucratic layer of fat meat that's not needed.

Slowly but surely your History is being swept away, like that small plaque that is placed on the side of that Ace Hardware store this is all that is left to represent the greatest Jazz player to ever have done it, Louis Armstrong. Or for that matter the House that stands idly on Lake Park that once was the home of the late great Muddy Waters, who in his recording studio basement pumped out the great songs like "Mannish Boy" along with many others. How about those stone walls that is all that remains of the Pilgrim Baptist church where the great Father Dorsey coached Mahalia Jackson in this new genre Gospel. You see for those who do not know, Bronzeville was by design a concentrated area for people of color to reside in because you were not allowed to freely move about in this city, although some want to dismiss this fact outright, but I am trying to take the high road with this because for me this was a very important place in the Chicago story and if this gets erased then we have all lost. I have already witnessed much demolition of important houses of history without even a bat of an eye, and also the reluctance to even acknowledge that some of it even existed and I am more than saddened by this. I have listened as others have belittled our contributions to this society and for me that makes this that much more important to be preserved and as our proof of accomplishment for all to learn from. To our representatives we are at an important crossroad, we need you as leaders not as rubber stamps and yes people for those who do not respect these facts. This is where great people did great things in the worst of circumstances and let us never forget that Bronzeville is a special place in Chicago's history

    Hi Ray,

Any music place should bring back that neighborhood feel One of the main draws of a south side club, at least for blues purists and maybe jazz too, would be that nostalgic feel back to the glory days of Muddy or Louis Armstrong et al. Without something special to draw tourists and locals, why would they leave downtown or the near north side?

I wonder how those clubs are doing? Could this city support another blues/jazz club? I think it could if promoted properly. And we'd have to convince out of towners and suburban locals that the destination is safe and transportation is readily available. If I'm downtown and it's $40 round trip in a cab, there had better be something amazing at the other end of that cab ride.

I know Buddy Guy's does very well. I didn't know about Room 43 or Norman's, but I don't get out like I used to. Room 43 looks small and there is no schedule of music. Their site says "coming soon". Norman's looks amazing and can seat 85. The adjacent store fronts would be a good potential site for a museum and there is a vacant lot across the street that could handle more development. Muddy's house is close by and could be part of the experience. It looks like Norman's could host music after the dinner hour if they wanted to. I am going to try them for dinner very soon as that Gumbo looks excellent.

The Sunset Café still is there on 35th where Duke, Benny Goodman, Doc Cheatham along with the Great Satchmo is still there. The Sutherland where all the greats performed Billie Holliday, Miles, John Coltrane is still there and renovated, this is going to happen and being this interest of making the city a tourist destination it doesn't get any better than this. Who would not want to be in the cradle of the music world and not be surrounded by its rich history.

Bronzeville history is Chicago history

This magnificent history that happened here in bronzeville is for all of Chicago to embrace, why there is so much division on this is astounding to me. In it's heyday all races came here to participate in all that was happening in this small section of the southside. It was an exciting and enlightening era where we to this day still reap the benefits of what happened here. So when the effort is made to bring this back to life we all win.
