thatblows1 thanks for inquiring. We had a small group of volunteers on Saturday, knocking on doors and getting the word out. We met with quite a few neighbors and provided them with donuts and coffee. We even got a few who are interested in volunteering and posting a sign in their yard or window. UICC and UIC Can Bring It On Home with a Unified Bid

A joint bid with UICC and UChicago should be a forethought. As each university presents its three sites for the OPL bid, giving the Obamas a total of six sites to consider when this is suppose to be narrowed-down process. Then why not add another? A joint bid with UICC and UChicago should be a forethought. As each university presents its three sites for the OPL bid, giving the Obamas a total of six sites to consider when this is suppose to be narrowed-down process. Then why not add another? A unified proposal for the one site that can stack up against the heritage of Harlem and the waterfront of Hawaii that is neutral, vacant, central, accessible and panoramic .... the Michael Reese site.
Hawaii humbly acknowledged its interest in the option to have a internet connection with Uchicago. Even Columbia University has respectfully expressed to the White House that it would be happy to have at least some part the OPL as an option. [This just in today, UChicago announces multiple university collaboration for programming.]

Why haven't the two universities even considered the option of a unified bid? Is it just me, or is Chicago still so arrogant in taking it's chances that we will allow each University to maintain this all or nothing attitude? I get that the invitation is theirs. Maybe we forgot how it felt to be standing in shock at the Daley Center with our mouths wide open after the Olympic decision. People please! The universities aren't going to develop the OPL, private dollars pay for this trophy. Chicago Donors don't belong to universities.

With the upcoming plans for the future highspeed rail for Crossrailchicago.org, let's make the Michael Reese site the CrossTown Campus. Let's give both Universities a prime lakefront Institute on the Campus that connects to the OPL and effectively knocks this bid out of the ballpark so that we will "Bring It On Home".

Tune in tonight 12/8 at 8:00 pm at listen Live on WVON (1690 AM)
Dr. Carol Adams will highlight the Bring It On Home Campaign on the RhymeFest
Talk Program.

New School Ratings Show Mixed Bag, CATALYST // SARAH KARP
As Phillips High School’s football team recently made its way to the state championship game, media accounts went beyond celebrating the accomplishment in sports: The all-black, all low-income school was lauded for earning the district’s highest academic rating last year.
Today’s long-delayed release of the latest ratings offer a sobering picture: Phillips is the only school to fall from the top rating last year to the bottom this year and is among only 44 schools (7 percent of 670 schools in the district, and including nine charters) to land at the bottom under a new rating system. Last year, nearly 30 percent of schools got the lowest rating.
What happened?
For one, the district’s new rating system places more emphasis on improvement in test scores rather than the scores alone. As a result, more schools with low test scores, but a decent rate of improvement, moved up in the new five-level rating system. One example is Robeson High in Englewood, which had always landed on the bottom rung in the past but moved up a level this year. Phillips, on the other hand, had poor student growth.
Improving Phillips is more a process than an event, says AUSL spokeswoman Deidre Campbell. Phillips was turned around by AUSL in 2010. "We are expecting good things in the future," she says, noting that six of AUSL turnarounds were among the two highest ratings.

What we need is a commitment in our neighbor from the mayor and our aldermen to enforce tenant rights and stop letting these slumlords pay them off to avoid taking their assessment to housing court instead of administrative hearings. They are the cause of poor CHA housing. I'm tired of hearing about low income people living in Bronzeville and we should only have home owners and black owned businesses here. Most black folks are low income because it's good for white folks and black people who think they have made it.

I'd like to know more about the administrative hearing process as opposed to housing court. Maybe we could meet for coffee. I think class-ism is a problem in this area. The condition flourishes when people on both sides of the divide are too self interested. If the low income residents are pushed out, the same process will be used to displace the middle income folks when more affluent people want the area. Walmart is not a high end retailer, the current level of development seems to have a high regard for the low income dollars, I suggest we have respect for the low income people.

  • @jeffrey booker: Im sorry for not answering you when you commented but I really get tired of social media sometimes and make comments and go on with my life (smile). I would be happy to meet with you over a cup of coffee. Also, know that I am a hotline volunteer for Metropolitan Tenants Organization and I hear all kinds of horror stories from all classes of people about landlords, city services, CHA, etc. Let's meet and discuss. Good Time Sports Bar on 35th

Does anyone know anything about the Good Time Sports Bar on 35th near Indiana?

The name showed up on the awning on the side of the building recently so I did some searching online and found news about recent permits and a facebook page that doesn't have much info - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Good-Time-Sports-Bar/429506427185076?sk=page_map

If this place ends up being nice and service is good they are going to do very well. I know I will be a regular! :)

  • Chacho Chi guy in ChiTown

I was there this past weekend, sadly, nothing to rave about. No good beer selections, nothing on tap. It was an older, quiet crowd. There was group of healthcare workers having a good time.

Good thing about the place, there is a bouncer screening customers. So, no hooligans, gang bangers or thugs inside. By the time I left a DJ was setting up. I believe the place is owned by the liquor store owners, who are middle eastern. Bottom line, won't be going back.

  • Ben in Bronzeville Let's Build a Stronger City

I know at least one of the owners is black.

I am glad you posted your recent interview. I had heard about it, but I don't have cable. I was amazed to hear that a high school was kept open to accommodate 13 students. I would like to know more about the "lack of humanity" in the design of the Lucas Museum. Humanity is not a word that often falls from the lips of sitting politicians. The arts and rec, center on 35th and Cottage sounds good, but I wonder who is going to really benefit. These development projects seem to be the new method for "stealing" public money. There is already a facility, four blocks away, on Pershing & Cottage. Can you say that local residents will get jobs working on the construction or will we see training programs put in place if there is a contention that qualified workers are not available, per city ordinance.
And lastly, it is sad to see, when given the opportunity to access the means for broad casting, we choose to imitate the format of the major media outlets. Our performance pales in comparison and the content is bland and shallow, I suspect this is because we are mimicking a format that has other priorities than providing useful information.

  • West loop realist Teacher political operative

All Will "I'm like Barack Obama" burns is interested in is being an errand boy for Rahms pay to play agenda. He is in favor if giving Rahm a free pass on the Lucas museum because Hollywood is more important to Rahm and burns than is Chicago. He also follows the failed policies of enabling Toni Preckwinkle.

Giving investors the opportunity to profit from investing in already proven Early Childhood Development Programs is just another example of using public education as a revenue stream for private profit. The embrace of automation, without regard for the human consequences of it, is killing opportunity, more so than the lack of education. I am trying to get on the ballot for the 2015, 4th Ward Aldermanic Election because I believe we need political representation that understands this. http://movementfornewchicago.org for more information.

Myth, the mayor carrying for Bronzeville, though he may have some sycophants and quislings carrying his water the agenda is to rid the community of the like of poor people. The creation of jobs past and present- indigenous residents are excluded from participating in the workforce. None of the public housing residents PHR save for those who are friends of the past alderwoman and Will Burns are not getting contracts to develop their small businesses but its funny how all the new businesses moving into the community seems to be well taken care of, have no problem fighting to maintain a very strong robust workforce of 99% white and hispanic. There is a big push to create businesses or commercial outlets on land that was promised to PH residents . The trend seems to value replacing PHR from the area with nouveau riche gays, hispanics, white or yupie African Americans. Remember this, if they come for me today with your help, tomorrow they will come for you after they increase your property taxes and lay you off from the job they hired you on. Anyway, all this hidden racism, class caste system known as gentrification was done by taxation without representation-meaning the funding ,federal assistance, zoning and permits was made possible because it was to redevelop the land and community for the working poor and low income people and families residing and dwelling in these areas until the mayor's approached HUD with the 30, 30, 30 plan-affordable, market and low income but only five low income PHR have been able to move into any of the new constructed development as very many of the rehabbed and newly built building are half full, hmm i wonder why. In closing, Diversity kills the community. The Bronzeville community is struggling to obtain power, wealth and economic empowerment but if we give in to diversity there goes our power and wealth. Give black people born and reared in Chicago a chance to become wealthy, and be politicians and community stake holders.

  • We'll see,if he can take the Hispanic vote with him.

What it really means is we have consistently been sold out by established, entrenched black democratic political leadership.

This BNC meeting was packed with information that local residents can use to improve existing property values, sell property and purchase or build in Bronzeville. The clear takeaway was that Bronzeville is fast becoming the place to buy, live, start a business, work and play. We have the right combinations, close to the Lake, Loop, reasonable property prices and vacant land. Please stay tuned for more BNC informational meetings and an up coming BNC sponsored Bronzeville promotion. Stay positive neighbors, good things are in store for Bronzeville!

  • Ruby, the meeting on Wednesday was super informational and invigorating. Thanks to you and the other leaders of the BNC for your active presence in Bronzeville over the last year!

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for posting something regarding the meeting. I was trying to make it but just couldn't. Is there any more detailed information you can give about specific businesses that are in the works for Bronzeville?
