Raise your voices!

After attending one of the Presidential Library Center meetings hosted by the Park District and reading countless articles/editorials/comments, listening to radio and TV news/talk shows; I wonder how many concerned citizens have sent our President and First Lady a note. http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/submit-questions-and-comments

Raise your voices. It may be that your note captures the heart of the issue and provides a peaceful solution to bringing the Obama Presidential Library home.

There is no shame in demanding our fare share of whatever happens in our neoghborhoods. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never has and it never will.

I live there and I saw people who appeared to be production people who are African-American. Also, all you have to do is look at the credits at the end of every show and you will see several names that are very obviously African-American. Also, it is great publicity for the neighborhood when crews shoot in our neighborhood regardless of the ethnicity. "Public Enemies" starring Johnny Depp shot scenes in the same location three or four years ago and as a resident of that block I think it's great.

Fioretti’s remarks came as Emanuel on Tuesday made an address on public safety in his administration.

“The Emanuel-McCarthy leadership on crime in our city is just . . . a complete failure between the two of them,” Fioretti said at a morning event in City Hall.

“I think we have good people that we can look at in a future administration, even, in fact, in our rank-in-file. . . . I think we need a new strategy across the board.”

Asked point-blank if he would replace McCarthy, Fioretti said: “If it wasn’t clear from my answer, my answer is yes.”

In his remarks to the City Club of Chicago on Tuesday, mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia also pushed for a new direction on tackling violence in the city, stressing community policing and adding police officers on the streets. Garcia, however, fell short of calling for McCarthy’s replacement.

Article: How To Sell Off a City

In June of 2013, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made a new appointment to the city’s seven-member school board to replace billionaire heiress Penny Pritzker, who’d decamped to run President Barack Obama’s Department of Commerce. The appointee, Deborah H. Quazzo, is a founder of an investment firm called GSV Advisors, a business whose goal—her cofounder has been paraphrased by Reuters as saying—is to drum up venture capital for “an education revolution in which public schools outsource to private vendors such critical tasks as teaching math, educating disabled students, even writing report cards.”

GSV Advisors has a sister firm, GSV Capital, that holds ownership stakes in education technology companies like “Knewton,” which sells software that replaces the functions of flesh-and-blood teachers. Since joining the school board, Quazzo has invested her own money in companies that sell curricular materials to public schools in 11 states on a subscription basis.

In other words, a key decision-maker for Chicago’s public schools makes money when school boards decide to sell off the functions of public schools.

She’s not alone. For over a decade now, Chicago has been the epicenter of the fashionable trend of “privatization”—the transfer of the ownership or operation of resources that belong to all of us, like schools, roads and government services, to companies that use them to turn a profit. Chicago’s privatization mania began during Mayor Richard M. Daley’s administration, which ran from 1989 to 2011. Under his successor, Rahm Emanuel, the trend has continued apace. For Rahm’s investment banker buddies, the trend has been a boon. For citizens? Not so much.

  • Or he could be a leach like Fioretti who robbed Chicago & Illinois with frivolous civil rights before in office and wasting city money while in office.

Article: Rahm’s ads are fabulous fakes

Some of the latest advertising for Rahm Emanuel’s mayoral reelection campaign is cleverly audacious, deliberately misleading — and all apparently perfectly legal.

A TV commercial that looks like Emanuel is backed by the city’s most prominent news anchor and a mailing that closely resembles the cover of Chicago magazine (right down to its logo) are among paid media pieces that have turned up in recent weeks.

Bosses of the news organizations involved have expressed concern that the ads could lead some to believe they’re supporting Emanuel’s reelection, but their lawyers tell them there’s nothing they can do about it. Federal law and FCC regulations prohibit stations from editing or refusing to broadcast candidate advertisements based on their content.

Hello Neighbors,

Mayoral challenger Bob Fioretti has said he’s tired of having to elbow lobbyists on his way to the City Council floor. He’s equally tired of their extraordinary influence on legislative business.

Now, he wants to do something about it.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Fioretti (2nd) tried to to out-maneuver Mayor Rahm Emanuel on the subject of ethics reform so important to capturing the independent vote — by introducing the latest in a parade of ethics ordinances.

Fioretti’s version would preclude lobbying activity during Council meetings and prohibit elected officials from lobbying Council members on behalf of their “paying clients.” The ordinance also would discharge ordinances stalled by “committee inaction” with 48 hours notice before Council meetings and require aldermen who recuse themselves from City Council votes to also step aside when it’s time to debate.

That final provision appears tailor-made for Ald. Edward Burke (14th). Burke routinely abstains from City Council votes to avoid conflicts with his private law clients. But he sometimes participates in debates on those matters when they come before the Finance Committee he chairs.

Here's the link and a bit of the content:

Mayoral challenger Bob Fioretti wants to give Chicago parking ticket scofflaws a chance to settle their debts and get off the boot-eligible list without paying exorbitant late fees.

At Wednesday’s City Council meeting, Fioretti plans to curry favor with the scofflaw vote by proposing what he claims would be Chicago’s first parking ticket amnesty program in nearly 10 years.

Fioretti said another amnesty could match or trump the $7 million the city raked in last time around — and every little bit helps to chip away at the city’s $20 billion pension crisis.

He argued that it’s particularly well-timed because Mayor Rahm Emanuel has raised fines for an array of parking offenses and increased penalties for those who don’t pay.

That puts motorists in a bit of a trick-bag. If they don’t pay, they land on the boot list and risk having their vehicles disabled, incurring even more fines. If they do pay, they sometimes have to do it at the expense of other pending bills that carry their own penalties.

Is Racism Obsolete?

Are we advanced enough in our thought process where we can judge more based on character than ones skin color? How much further could we be as a Nation if we got past this worn out and tired basis for judgment, can you really tell who someone really is by just looking at them? Fioretti accuses Emanuel of favoring Uber, wants crackdown after 2nd attack on rider

Mayoral challenger Bob Fioretti on Thursday accused Mayor Rahm Emanuel of favoring a ride-sharing giant whose investors include the mayor’s brother — by passing weak regulations and failing to tighten them, even after two sexual attacks on Uber X passengers.

Fioretti plans to introduce a resolution at next week’s City Council meeting that could pave the way for aldermen to take the matter out of Emanuel’s hands.

It calls for City Council hearings on the “business and employment practices” of companies licensed by the city to be “transportation network providers” to determine ways to correct glaring weaknesses in the mayor’s two-tiered ride-sharing ordinance that, Fioretti claims, put riders in danger.

Uber has not yet been issued a city license. Yet, the Emanuel administration has allowed the company to continue to operate on the streets of Chicago while its application is still pending.

I am a big fan of Uber. The cost is about half of a taxi, and I have never waited more than ten minutes for a ride. I always chat with the drivers; I had one tell me recently that he makes the same amount of money driving four days a week for uber than he did driving a taxi seven days a week. Also, because the Uber drivers actually own the vehicles, they are clean!

  • Erica in Bronzeville 12 yrs in Bronzeville; Ready for a Brighter Day

Ive had great Uber experiences as well, but the question is about making sure Uber is licensed and regulated. Without regulation, drivers aren't screened as thoroughly as cabbies are and fare prices and rates can surge at any time. As riders who value safety, we should want the businesses who serve us to be licensed and regulated.

Our public spaces are not for sale and should be off limits to development. Rahm's willingness to turn our open spaces into spaceship parking and private playgrounds for the rich without public input shows he's not interested in what the people of Chicago want. There are plenty of spaces in many communities across the City that could have been used.

This is another example of the lack of meaningful engagement with the public on issues that affect the city as a whole. A mayor with a better sense of priorities and respect for his constituents would be leading the way on a comprehensive look at how Hyde Park could incorporate the Obama museum, a badly needed trauma center and other community priorities without seizing public land.
'Rahm's idea of transparency seems to be having a hearing at the 11th hour when the decision is all but made.

Fioretti Demands that Emanuel 'Defend His Record' in Debates

So who is REALLY for an Elected School Board in Chicago?

Today: “It is absurd and offensive that the candidates for mayor have not publicly agreed to debates yet,” Fioretti was quoted as saying in a statement.

“Voters deserve to question candidates and understand what we will and will not do for Chicago. Rahm has to come and defend his record. Chuy [Garcia] needs to explain why he changed positions on an elected school board after his [Chicago Teachers Union] endorsement and where he has been all these years while progressives have been fighting this mayor.”

"Bronzeville on The Move"

You can feel it, the arrow is definitely pointing up, small businesses popping up all throughout the area, and not just the negative type. Pride and ownership of property is starting to reveal itself in the appearance of the area. The Mural project is a spectacular touch highlighting the rich history of Bronzeville, with the number of projects kicking off with spring, the optimism is definitely there. It is not everything but it is a start.

Listening to people at the Obama library presentation yesterday, one lady commented that by improving their neighborhood they were afraid whitey was coming...great idea!

The talk of focusing on a neighborhood on the Black Metropolis unicorn is racist and contrary to goals of a diverse neighborhood. Bronzeville in the long run would be better off in the long run by focusing on a smaller footprint of identity in the short term, that distances itself from the "southside" mentality and reputation.

Here is another example of liberal policy hurting development : the affordable housing canard where a developer has to pay $100,000 per unit for zoning changes to affordable housing; so not only do you steal from the middle class, you jack up housing pricing, thus making all neighborhoods more unaffordable while also increasing segregation market factors.

I left a leather folder with some important items in his cab and he found my business card and came back to deliver the folder to me. I offered him some $ for his kind act, but he refused and said that he was just doing his job.

He did a great job.

There is so much negative news about our city, crime, corruption and just people being mean and dishonest.

I am very proud to have ridden in a tax cab with one of THE best taxi cab drivers in North America.
