We've been living in our building for going 6+ years. A new tenant has recently moved in beneath us. The issues: from the time we wake up at 6 am prepare for work, the smell of weed is seeping thru the vents (it's that strong), when we return home in evening same thing, traffic in and out especially in the evening thru the night (hear the door opening and slamming), loud music especially on the weekends til 3 o' clock in the morning. We've told the property manager they said call the police. Well we did, 2 weekends in a row. They came and went. We heard them after the police left cursing about us, the whole 9. Under normal circumstances I would approach them and speak with them but the concern is safety. We don't know who really lives there plus we don't want to run the risk of someone vandalizing our property. Another neighbor said when she walks in the building and she's struck in the face with the strong smell on weed. She doesn't want to say anything because she lives alone and shares some of our same concerns. What if anything short of moving can we do?

Well, I'd rather have weed smoke than cigarette smoke any day of the week. However, excessive late-night noise when partying is really lame ... especially when you don't invite your neighbors to the party!

  • On a different note.how do anyone get rid of squatters,if i have to pay taxes on my property they should to, the banks don't seem to care the alderman say there looking into it,not this alderman the one in the 20th ward, what can be done.

Light Issues on King Drive

We are currently working with the Bureau of Electrify to resolve the outages on King Drive between 37th and 44th.

We are also working to identify a potentially larger problem with the local infrastructure that may be causing the problem.

“I am tired of what the Democratic Party is doing to black people. Our vote is automatic. If you vote Democratic, 96 out of 96 times, they don’t have to wonder where black people are. Once the election is over, Democrats have no incentive to deliver on their campaign promises,” he added.

“This is the safest time for us to break the cycle. We can make other people come to our community and vie for our votes. We can put ourselves into the game because right now we are out of the game,” concluded Rev James Meeks.

4th Ward Alderman Will Burns, you seem to be in control of these major construction projects.

Alderman Burns, please inform your tax paying constituents who you are ultimately accountable too, how our young able bodied men and women currently living in the historic Bronzeville community can become gainfully employed in designing and building these 3 three new brides in Bronzeville?

Alderman Burns you have been duly notified that the tax paying citizens currently living in the 4th Ward will be duly frustrated, if we begin to see a bunch of white and Hispanics working on these bridge construction projects in our community under you leadership.

If you want, we will provide space at the Bronzeville Visitor Information Center to host a town hall meeting about how your constituency will be able to work on these three bridge installation projects.

4th Ward Alderman Burns, you will be held accountable on this economic empowerment infrastructure development issue!!!

I visited Sip and Savor this week. Welcome to the area. Good to have the option of going to someplace besides Starbucks for coffee. I work from home so I like to get out every now and again. I spent a few hours in your place but had to leave the tv and music were competing for attention. I do like the place though, and the guys were nice and showed great customer service.

Bronzeville is more than a name of a neighborhood

There are signs all throughout the area that it is coming to life, new restaurants, residential housing with hefty price tags, old historical buildings being restored with new purposes. There also seems to be an influx of a diversified population to Bronzeville, which begs me to question what and how do we want our community to be defined, this ain't Lincoln Park, nor is it Hyde Park, I personally do not want to be homogenized into everywhere else in America...

There also seems to be an influx of a diversified population to Bronzeville, which begs me to question what and how do we want our community to be defined, this ain't Lincoln Park, nor is it Hyde Park, I personally do not want to be homogenized into everywhere else in America with the commercialization of where I live. That it is important that our History is preserved in the development of Bronzeville and this is paramount on so many levels. There is a great story here that we can all embrace and celebrate, this is a historic tourist destination. Think South! Mayor, this could mean Jobs, business opportunities, access to same Lakefront, this rich History just waiting to be told, this is where we need to start.

Thanks Rick for the kind words, but I grew up in Chicago in the 30s and 40s, got tear gassed in Grant Park in '68, lived through McCarthy and the John Birch Society, and I want no part of the American brand of conservatism. I would say more, but it would be extremely impolite on my part. In any case, I accept the compliment, but I really must decline the invitation. Keep on truckin'.

Street Lights Out AGAIN 3500-3700 King Drive

Alderman Burns, where are you on this? Once again as I write this (745pm on September 15), there are NO STREET LIGHTS on either side of the street between 3500 and 3700 blocks on King Drive, the third time this has happened in the last week and who knows how many times in the last year. What are YOU doing to address this issue which is a MAJOR safety issue? Time and time again we contact 311 and your office and the issue still occurs. Your office has done an inadequate job in handling this major concern...tell us, what are you doing to address this???

  • Marc of Bronzeville Homeowner, longtime Bronzeville resident

Ald. Burns, your link mentions 37th to 44th...what about 35th to 37th? We are taxpayers too!

Alderman burns us totally non responsive especially now to the new north side of the ward. He is too busy trying to gain favor by voting 100% with mayor pay to play and telling everyone he is Obama's protege. He has to go.

All good observations Nicole. I know I was in the minority as I didn't want the library at the MR site, in this case I do think a university and the U of C site is appropriate, not only is it a logical (library +university) the Obama's have ties to that institution. Obama did community outreach work, however not in Bronzeville, nor did they live here either, so I don't begrudge Hyde Park if they get this development.

What I would like to see to the area, is something like they did in Rosemont close to the convention site, it's retail and entertainment. Put in a similar outlet mall, restaurants, and theater. I've always felt we need something there that would breath life into the area past 5/6 p.m, (library closing time) As it is conventioneers, go to Michigan Ave. and the loop to shop, and for theater and dining. We could be capturing this right here in our community, we would get their business and the surrounding area to shop/play here. We need something to draw other Chicagoan's into the area for them to see how great it is. Maybe then we'd get some other development going on, we have plenty of vacant lots that could use some housing. No one needs to be displaced while there are all these lots that single family or two flats can be built upon, more homeowners will stabilize the area.

Then if Gary could pull it together and revitalize their airport to connect with the metra to bring people at least as a mid-west hub, imagine flights from St. Loius, Milwaukee, and other nearby cities to have a fun weekend in Chicago to stay in one of the hotels there next to retail/entertainment and the lake. Perhaps this is a far out idea, but I think it would be a great experience.

  • GRD - I agree with your vision 100%. We have so much vacant land we could have a zoo or even horse back riding.

Bronzeville Men are Looking Good

Has anyone noticed how nice the men working with the school safty/watch look this year. The shirts and ties add a lot of class to the job. In the words of Billy Crystal "They look marvelous."

  • In another post someone mentioned the unsightly men and women on 47th hanging out and sitting on crates. Seeing the safe passage men looking nice is a welcome sight. I would hope when tourist are in the area seeing more people looking like they have respect for themselves would give them a better impression of Bronzeville and its people. There is an expression "clothes make a man".

  • Apple Jaxxx Pissing people off - not once, but twice....

These people should be commended for doing a great deed. I'm appreciative of anyone who helps kids get to a safe destination.

WASHINGTON — Obama Presidential Library Foundation chief Martin Nesbitt is poised to announce the bid finalists next week with two Chicago sites without university affiliations — at Lakeside and Bronzeville — not advancing to the next round, I am told by multiple sources. The University of Chicago is expected to be on a shortlist of bidders who will be asked to submit a very detailed proposal for the library and museum.

Nesbitt, I am told, is personally making calls to bidders to deliver the news this week.

The Lakeside site — on the former U.S. Steel South Works site on the Southeast Side of Chicago — was spectacular but it would take years for related commercial and residential development to take place.

The Bronzeville bid was anchored at the site of the former Michael Reese Hospital.

Here is an interesting news story set in the city of Saint Louis, that has many of the "issues" we face here on the S.S of Chicago.

The father of the current mayor of St. Louis (himself a St. Louis alderman) has proposed Singapore style caning beatings as a punishment for gang members who deface city property with gang graffiti .

The news story states:

"An alderman today proposed public caning as a punishment for graffiti vandals, saying a whipping or two had never hurt his own son, who is now the Mayor of St Louis.
"Fining them doesn't seem to be the answer," the alderman, Freeman Bosley Sr. told the city's Board of Aldermen. "Maybe whopping them on their behind a few times might be a better message."
The board voted 17 to 10 to hold a hearing on the idea, effectively burying it.
Graffiti vandals in St. Louis face $500 fines and jail terms of up to 90 days.
Apparently inspired by the recent caning in Singapore of an American teen-ager, Michael Fay, for vandalism, Mr. Bosley said youngsters did not get enough discipline at home.
"I think you need to spank them while you talk to them," he said. "My mother whipped my tail plenty, and my dad did, too, and I've put the strap to the Mayor."
Mayor Freeman Bosley Jr. had no comment on his father's remarks.
