What happened to the Bridgeport Vet?

I have been calling the bridgeport vet (Wayne, now that he is alone since Larry passed away) for over a week and there is a message that says the clinic is temporarily closed. Does anyone know why? And also does anyone know if Wayne is going to open again soon? I haven't been there in awhile since my dog and then one of my cats passed on. So I am out of the loop

Kiddie park?

Does anyone know what's in store for the park at 31st & Lowe? It's been fenced off & today is being dug up. Haven't seen anything regarding it here or elsewhere.

The upgrade is part of the park district's plan. McKeon will also be upgraded. These pocket parks are part of our neighborhood and not only make life better, they also increase our home values. Please consider attending park advisory council meetings where you can voice your concerns and ideas for activities at these small parks. The McGuane Park Advisory Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 pm at the McGuane Field House. There are many programs available for pocket parks. Please consider attending the Nov. 3 PAC meeting. If you enjoy these parks, we can make them better.

Gotta love the part, "Must have a Chicago RAP sheet to receive assistance"

Adios Maureen.

  • Monkeysphere, ladies and gentlemen. Monkeysphere.

  • A brilliant observation Brian. Thanks.
    Monkeysphere
The limited capacity of primates to conceptualize others as distinct and relevant individuals (from an article on Cracked.com). Studies suggest that for humans this limit is about 150 people, and those outside the monkeysphere are not really considered people at all, but one-dimensional bit characters.

What happened at Xindy's Oriental Massage?

On October 9, four Chicago Police SUV's were parked outside Xindy's around 5 p.m. One officer blocked the front door. Before long, a CPD sergeant walked out with the City of Chicago licenses in one hand, a fluorescent orange "REVOKED" sticker in his other hand. And then, the place was closed.

  • "I wouldn't mind a place to grab a quick drink after work, or maybe something that would leverage the CTA access to try and pull people from further around town."

I'm pretty sure that 'pulling people' was the entire problem there.

  • Do you really think there it is a coincidence now that Balcer has one foot out the door Xindy's gets busted. Massage parlors popped up all over Archer during his time in office.

Daley Thompson's website is chock full of praise for Balcer, maybe he'll renew support for the rubdown industry in the 11th Ward if elected.

Strays near Donovan Park

Around 5:15 today spotted two strays running together near the park. One is a German Shepard and the other was a smaller fawn colored dog. They appeared to be in good shape but were too far away for me to see if they were wearing tags.

Personal research coud benefit community!

Would anyone like to sign up for a neighborhood compost collection service? Pick-up and replacement of a provided 5-gallon bucket will go to feed a local worm farm. Vermicomposting. $10/pick-up or price dependent on pick-up requirements. I would like to start providing such a service on bicycle with trailer, would you like to have this service? Research only now, and then will plan accordingly! Program can also include return of finished compost to subscriber!

  • I am interested! We have a compost bin in our yard, but it is now full and doing its thing. But I don't want to just dump our scraps in the trash. I'm sending an email now.

  • thank you! I will begin using my other email for direct contact. I am ready to pick up your container, let me know what you think of the info sheet I sent you.

Ten Thousand Ripples Art & Peace Workshop

The Chicago Park District and Changing Worlds will present Symbols of Culture, Symbols of Peace, an Art and Peace Workshop, Saturday, October 25th, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon, at McGuane Park, 2901 S. Poplar. Join neighbors and friends for a morning of art and peace making activities. Learn about the Ten Thousand Ripples Buddha sculptures in Palmisano Park and work with award-winning artist, Indira Johnson, to create your own symbol of peace. This event is free and open to residents of all ages. The Ten Thousand Ripples exhibit was installed at Palmisano Park in August where it will remain until next summer.

  • rene One of Morty's people

It just occurred to me... those sculptures will either stop the sledding this winter or make it more dangerous. This is very interesting. I am conflicted about the sledding at Palmisano. It looks so dangerous, what with the bottom of the hill leading to a wall. On the other hand, as a kid I loved sledding so much, and would hate to deprive any child of that experience.

  • R.

I've sled down it many times and let me say that the fun far outweighs the danger. I haven't seen anyone get injured in the times I've been there, though the sledder has to mind any pedestrians passing by. Sad news if the sculptures interfere this winter, but I suspect folks will just spend more time sledding down the other side.

  • rene One of Morty's people

I grew up in west Michigan where we had dunes and some of the dunes even had rope lifts. So my idea of sledding is possibly a little safer in some ways, and much more dangerous in others!

Falcon

Saw a falcon catch a sparrow on our deck today. Hadn't seen one so close before.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

We have nesting cardinals and mourning doves in our yard. We occasionally see red-tailed hawks. Mr. Woodpecker (red comb, and all) shows up for a few weeks every spring.

  • jim m bridgeport resident 14 years

We have a thistle feeder. Fewer goldfinches have showed up this year than last. Mourning doves eat what falls to the ground. Haven't seen the falcons (I think what we saw were actually kestrels) in the tree across the alley since spring.

Bridgeport Art Walk

In addition to tomorrow's regularly scheduled 3rd Friday open studios at Bridgeport Art Center, I just saw that there is an "art walk" Saturday & Sunday with activities for various ages at various Bridgeport locations (including some food specials!).

Here's the article, which was shared on Nextdoor:

Maureen Sullivan's Palmisano Park Council Wins Award

Congratulations to Maureen, Rob and Dan on winning the annual "Volunteers in the Parks" award from Friends of the Parks.

http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20141013/bridgeport/palmisano-park-advisory-council-wins-city-award

I don't serve on the park advisory council but have had the privilege of volunteering for the Bridgeport Clean and Green and Bridgeport Air and Water Show over the last few years. These events have given me the opportunity to work closely with Maureen Sullivan and learn from her the true meaning of community spirit. Her resourcefulness and ability to bring businesses, community groups and individuals together for a common purpose is exactly why I want her to be our next alderman.

Rob and Dan are both pretty great, too :) Congratulations to all!

  • Thanks Rene!
The PAC has great ideas for the park. And, while I know that Rob & I are proud to be recognized by Friends of The Park, Maureen is the real driving force of the council. She has put in a lot of her very-limited free time to make events at Palmisano great. She doesn't give up. Having worked with her on numerous projects over the last few years I think Maureen will make a good Alderman.
