Ding dong Obamacare is gone!

A federal appeals court in D.C. has ruled that folks who get their insurance through a federal insurance exchange are not able to get subsidies to purchase insurance as those who purchase insurance through a state run exchange. Illinois has a hybrid ststem which is half state and half federal.Ding dong Obamacare is gone!

  • I guess you socialist believe that those of us who pay the freight for others who should pay their own freight are the bloodsuckers. Boy , I tell you ,these are some really screwed up people .I just wonder what these people's parents have taught them. Perhaps though their parents also lived off of the hard earned tax money of others. After all monkey see, monkey do!

  • Seriously people ,I would like to know what all of you want to be when all of you grow up? Surely it's not to live on govt handouts. I could be wrong though.

Good Afternoon Every Block Family! (.:< I can't begin to tell you how heartwarming it is to see our family working together to solve an age old problem. Perhaps, we have something good started hear and by continuing to speak out, we can finally develop a voice that will attract the huddled masses yearning to be free to express themselves collectively and individualistically. It doesn't matter if we start by a complete paragraph or by just saying hello. We love you just the same. Keep up the good work! I see our family is growing. Great!!! Let's all give ourselves a Big Hug!

finding apt in Bridgeport

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in moving to Bridgeport. I live on the North Side now but find myself fairly often in Bridgeport/Pilsen. I moved to Chicago from LA last year and that area reminds me a lot of parts of LA.

I don't see many postings for Bridgeport apartments on Craigslist, and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for good ways to locate vacancies. I chatted with someone who works at Pleasant House Bakery and he mentioned walking around the neighborhood looking for "For Rent" signs. Any other good strategies?

Thanks in advance!

The Water Meter is Installed! So Far, So Good

Thanks again for your earlier advice, everyone! The installation took about 45 minutes, and -- amazingly -- no leaks!

I've used about 125 gallons this week, which means I'm on track to use about 1000 gallons in two months if I don't have to water the lawn. (Keep on coming, thunderstorms, LOL)

Of course, you knew I had to videotape the whole thing ;)

Where did the patios go?

First I noticed Poncho Pistolas outdoor seating was gone (that was a week ago, so it maybe back and I did not notice) then last night I noticed that Zaytune's outdoor seating was gone. Is anyone aware of this? Or why?

If I had time this week I would just stop at both for lunch and investigation :)

  • rene One of Morty's people

Yeah, it was the north side of Zaytune that I had seen recently, but was gone Monday night.

Pancho's brings all of that in every night!? Dang!

  • They do bring them in. I hear them every night about 11.

WANTED

Does any one have, know someone who has, or where I can get a good working laptop for free or very cheap? I have a friend who is in desperate need of one

  • Erik H Loyola & UofC alumnus, Chicago Loot Drop charity

It's kind of a hike, but check out Free Geek Chicago (http://freegeekchicago.org/) up at Diversey & Kimball. They take donated hardware and refurbish it to sell back out for cheap (usually in the $50-$150 range, if memory serves). You can also get a computer for free by volunteering with them to earn credit.

They're one of my favorite small-scale charities.

  • Melody Stanley Crafty/Techy Geek

I volunteer at FreeGeek Chicago and second Erik H's recommendation. (Sorry for being so late to the conversation). Laptops start at $75 and with 24 hours of volunteering you get a $75 reward which can cover the cost of one in full. We have minimum standards for hardware that we...

I volunteer at FreeGeek Chicago and second Erik H's recommendation. (Sorry for being so late to the conversation). Laptops start at $75 and with 24 hours of volunteering you get a $75 reward which can cover the cost of one in full. We have minimum standards for hardware that we sell so although not new computers, they all can play Youtube videos smoothly (with adequate internet connections), surf the web on Firefox, play DVDs, burn CDs (and some also can burn DVDs). We test them all and if they can not handle those tasks, we recycle them. Desktops start at $40 and we may soon be lowering the cost of our lowest priced desktops even further.

The Bridgeport Air & Water Show
Saturday, August 16, 5:30pm - 10:00pm

The Bridgeport Air & Water Show is one of the youngest and most unique air shows of its kind (All Kid Powered Activities). Recognized by both the Chicago Parks District & Friends of The Park – Chicago as “the kind of event we like to see neighborhoods promoting in city parks,” the Bridgeport Air & Water Show is destined to become one of Bridgeport’s most anticipated summer events. The citywide support for an event taking place right here in our neighborhood is inspiring to those of us who are working hard to keep Bridgeport safe and a great place to live.

Thriving public parks have an important role in the health and well-being of our community. That is why the Bridgeport Citizens Group is proud to announce that we have been asked to organize the 30 volunteer spots need for this year’s event.

Volunteer Opportunities Include:

10 – Water Volunteers: help teach kids to fish (catch & release)

5 – Air Volunteers: teach the art of getting a kite airborne

5 – Kite Decorating Volunteers: help the young ones personalize their kites with crayons and markers

6 – Information Volunteers (daytime): two people are needed at each information table (maps and information for all the day’s activities)

4 – Information Volunteers (nighttime): set up Chicago Astronomers and then remain near the telescope largest portable telescope and answer guest’s questions about the event as well as make call to Park Advisory Council members or local officials if needed.

Volunteer shifts will last 2.5 - 3 hours max. If you would like to volunteer please let us know ASAP.

In your email please include your name, phone number and preferred volunteer position. We will reply to confirm details within 24hrs.

Missing Cat

William has been missing since the 4th of July. He lives with me on the 33rd place block of South Morgan street in Bridgeport.
He is a very friendly orange cat with soft hair and a wide vocabulary of meows and chirps. No collar.
If you find him I would be most grateful if you could give me a call: 215-470-6131.
Reward or cookies or artwork to the lovely person who will return him to me. He is the best cat I have ever met. I am heartbroken.

Water Meter Savings (?)

After practically having to sell blood to pay June's water bill (up 10% from last December, up over ONE THIRD from two years ago), I'm seriously considering the Water Department’s extortion tactic -- I mean, generous offer to install a free water meter in my home. Their claim is that I’ll only be charged for what I use, and that my water bill will go down, especially since I’m single, take short showers, water the lawn sparingly, and generally use...

After practically having to sell blood to pay June's water bill (up 10% from last December, up over ONE THIRD from two years ago), I'm seriously considering the Water Department’s extortion tactic -- I mean, generous offer to install a free water meter in my home. Their claim is that I’ll only be charged for what I use, and that my water bill will go down, especially since I’m single, take short showers, water the lawn sparingly, and generally use water like a desert tortoise.

I’m curious about the experiences of those of you who have had water meters installed. Have your water bills actually gone down, or do the City of Chicago’s grand claims not -- hold water? (Sorry, couldn’t resist)

Also, are these water meters installed outside, like the gas and electric meters? And have there been any issues with vandalism?

  • Funny. I got my bill today, and it's still $96 credit (it's my second bill)

Husky Hog

There is a new restaurant in the neighborhood called the Husky Hog. They have a famous Food truck and is now newly located on the southwest corner of 31st and Shields (where Spanky's and the old Shrimp House was located). Amazing Southern BBQ! Yummy stuff. After sampling the menu earlier in the week I then had my wife's birthday party catered from them last night. Joe and Lauren Woodel (owners) came through and all our guests raved about the food. Check out Husky Hog and you will be pleased and back for more.

Sorry, we're more of an "unreasonable amounts of BBQ" family. :P

Yeah, we'll be checking this out.

New Housing at Parnell and 35th...Bad Decision?

"I support it" said Balcer, "people have been notified and nobody has called me yet to complain." Wow that really sounds like a leader for the neighborhood. I live a few blocks away and this is the first I am hearing about it. The property was zoned as single family and was recently re-zoned for this project. So basically when people come to White Sox games they will see a large complex that looks like projects being built on 35th street. Not new business, not brand new homes, rather some political buddies once again making bad decisions for our neighborhood!

Also , the odds of getting those with a high income to move into the area is pretty nil when one considers the neighborhood. The sad fact is though that if what you've writte about section 8 people eventually renting these new buildings, it will be that they have better living quarters than 90 perct of others in the area that don't live in these new buildings.

Is anyone embarrassed by the look of Halsted St?

I cant believe the lack of business and the look of Halsted st. There has to be over five abandoned store fronts from 33rd to 35th street. Am I the only property owner that is wondering what Alderman Balcer is doing for this neighborhood? If you look at what the South Loop, University Village and Pilsen has done in the past ten years Bridgeport should be embarrased.

  • Joanne Bridgeport

JennyMac - I'm glad you think those are fine schools. I chose to send my kids to a Catholic grammar school. I had no choice when it came to high school, they had to go private. Thats why neighborhood people move out of the neighborhood to the suburbs for the public schools.

  • Joanne - Only in Chicago: the higher property taxes you pay, the less chances of your child getting into the Elite Chicago Public high schools. Very broken & unfair system. The middle class is once again struggling to pay for it all by themselves!
