11th Ward WTTW Discussion

It isn't a competition, but still Kozlar "won". Sullivan was fairly strong. Daley Thompson got his clock cleaned. He looked sweaty and nervous.

Hope everyone takes a deep breath and relax's. Reading and re-reading the comments makes me think all of you are saying the same things but some comments may have been misinterpreted. It seems that the majority of the comments are negative against the Democratic machine but others may have taken some comments to be in support of the machine. Each of our experiences with the Pols is different and we will all have our opinion. Lets not argue amongst ourselves, show your opinions in the voting booth. Feel free to speak your opinions but please don't attack each other. That just turns the other readers off and they stop reading comments. We want to share opinions and we want others to read our comments.

I believe the original question was - how did you feel the candidates did at the debates. And then the attacks began. It was a simple question that got out of hand. All you had to do was say who you thought was the most influencing at the moment.

-Who's making sense about bringing the goods home to the 11th Ward?

I'm just amazed at how poorly Daley-Thompson performed. He rambled, confused himself with the current administration, and failed to demonstrate that he made any substantive contribution to the neighborhood in the past ten years.

Kozlar has based much of his platform on the previous work of Maureen and had to back away from making claims to the Ramova. I'm especially concerned that he has suggested he would give away his Aldermanic allowance. That money is entrusted to the Alderman to use to serve the citizens of the 11th ward, not for pandering to particular groups. Oh yeah, it's not just naive, it's against the law.

Maureen had the best showing at this forum. Her knowledge of TIF program demonstrated that she understands how city council decisions directly impact our neighborhoods. She clearly articulated what she has done for the neighborhood and linked it to what she would like to do as Alderman.

Solution to high cable TV bill?

I've been doing research about TV choices in our area, and I wanted to share a site a neighbor told me about: www.10channels.com.
I picked all of the channels we watch, and then the site recommended the lowest priced package from each TV company. I wanted to share this info since changing will save us money.
Can't get U-verse TV at our house, but some of you probably can. We have comcast and are thinking about going with ATT Internet & Directv. We can't cut everything because I love AMC and ESPN -- but I hate paying so much for them. Anyone have experience with DirecTV and/or Digital Antennas?

  • hodeho Thirteen-year Brighton Park resident

The Roku is a reasonably-priced and useful entertainment option. Works great with Netflix. Make sure you have decently fast Wi-Fi to get the most out of it.

  • paul poy part owner of a 3 flat apartment building

For TV, I recently switched to DirecTV from ATT U Verse TV. I think there are more cable channels, and more HD channels, at a cheaper price. But a negative for DirecTV is that their service requires the installation of a satellite dish facing south west without obstruction of trees...

But a negative for DirecTV is that their service requires the installation of a satellite dish facing south west without obstruction of trees or buildings. If you have Comcast, then this is not an issue.

DirecTV is owned by ATT and yet operates as an independent subsidiary. If you are a member of Costco, then some Costco stores have a DirecTV sales person doing promotions. Once the 3 month free movie packages with DirecTV have expired, then I will know what channels I really have.

For sports fans, cable/satellite appears to be the only option to get sports channels.. .

Daley Thompson's Illegal Tax Break

It is funny how as soon as you mention Daley Thompson's illegal tax break his supporters go silent. A "clerical error" that continued for 12 years and only stopped when the BGA caught him red-handed is pretty hard to defend.

A new day is dawning- the old machine and it's old ways of doing things has got to go. Good news for the connected like DT is that they can live off of the largesse and fat they've accumulated for decades.

Whether we're talking Daley Thompson with his multi-generational connections, or Emanuel with his billionaire donor bosses, 2015 will mark a return to people power. The clout crooks are getting the boot this time.

How do you feel about the firefighters?

The media have been reporting on a new contract with the firefighters, and I am wondering how you feel about the ones in this city.

Personally, I doubt that we are getting our money's worth from these city employees. First, they work 24 hours on and 48 off -- who really believes that they are working 24 hours? All this schedule does is allow them to sleep on the city job, then go out and work another one since they are so rested.

Second, why does the city not share data on the amounts, types, and outcomes of fire department calls? At least with the police, we can get an idea of what kind of reports are being made, but where can we go to find out what the CFD has accomplished? How many fires have you had in your neighborhood? I know of only 3 in the past 19 years, at least 2 of which were the residents' fault -- failure to clean out dryer lint, and putting things too close to space heater.

I would rather have the city put money into creating a video game that shows kids, teens and adults how to prevent a fire, what equipment to have in the building to deal with it, and what to do if one starts.

Perhaps some of you will be CFD boosters, and I welcome your stories. But before you laud them for their bravery, please think about all the news stories where the individual who saved someone in a fire was a family member, neighbor, passerby, or even the cops on patrol.

Looking for a free space to teach about the uses of essential oils

Hello, I'm looking for a space, whether it be in a coffee shop, yoga studio etc... to share the uses and benefit of essential oils.

Thanks,
Allison

  • I don't know this lady, but if she were really trying to capitalize on her products, she would have mentioned it right here. I'm sure if she gets a class going, she would let people know. (At least I would hope so). Some of the MLM essential oil companies are not that bad, and I've used their websites as a source of information, even though I buy elsewhere.

  • Happy making better choices

Robin I agree, but this was not an invite but a question about possible space.

Concrete contractor needed

Seeking a reliable concrete contractor to bid on a residential driveway project.

Need to build concrete beam approx 20'L x 4'W x 4'D to prevent frost heave in winter. Beam needs to be set flush into the ground (4 feet deep).

Please give me your recommendations and contact info. Much appreciated!

  • Michael Vitali Human being

Thanks again to Gary M. who stopped by this afternoon and gave me some valuable pointers.

Justin K., it looks like I will be in touch with your welding contact in the near future.

Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas, very much appreciated.

  • Michael Vitali Human being

¡Qué milagro! Thanks again to Gary M. and Justin K. It took until this morning for me to get Trejo's attention. Instead of redigging the fence posts, we took Gary's (and his wife's) suggestion of shortening the suspended fence itself, which required welding. Trejo does excellent work but is difficult to get on the phone. Now the buckled ground is no longer a problem — the work was done this morning and the fence swings freely even with existing frost heave. Thanks to all for your suggestions....

Apartment hunting

Hi there, everyblock-- I know it's early, but my husband and I are looking for an apartment for May 1 (or possibly slightly earlier). Ideally a two-bedroom or one-bed with an office, recently updated, east of Aberdeen and north of 35th.

Again, it's early, but we adore Bridgeport and want to get a head start. Any tips on people to call, places to see or when to start a serious search?

Thanks! Hope to call Bridgeport home soon.

It's just DISGUSTING that a business of such success has to be reported & hopefully FINED in order to do something that should be automatic. That's why as a resident who is just across the street from them, I will not patron their establishment because it shows they DO NOT CARE about the Neighborhood! During the summer, empty/broken beer bottles & garbage replace the snow~.
