info on bridgeport

Hi all! I am interested in any and all information on the neighborhood. We are considering buying a home there next spring. We currently live in the nw side and don't like it, too suburban. We are a family of four, we have a 2 and 4 year old. Safety? Friendliness? Schools? Any information would be great!

A and J -- I think Bridgeport is very comparable to Logan Square, but Logan Square has built up sooooooooooooo much in the last five years -- it has been on fire with sales and prices have skyrocketed -- especially with single family homes. Again, happy to take you driving around sometime and show you some places when ever you may be ready.

  • Justin K. McKinley Parker since 2008, south sider since 1998

Note that in terms of the boulevard system and connected parks, McKinley Park is very similar to Logan Square, as Western Boulevard and the actual park in McKinley Park were built as part of the same system as Logan Blvd. et al. And the best part: NO HIPSTERS. (At least not very many yet; my wife and I play "spot the hipster" as a way of gauging neighborhood gentrification.)

Looking for a good dog training class near Bridgeport

I have an adopted dog that is six months old. She has lots of energy and very little discipline. I know there are a lot of online how to's out there but I would prefer a structured class for both myself and the dogs benefit. PetsMart at Roosevelt and Canal offer training but the reviews say it is hit or miss depending on the trainer. Does anyone know of an alternative nearby?

  • I overlooked about Anti-Cruelty. They have an excellent program with trained instructors and different levels of instruction from puppies through the AKC Good Citizen class. I overlooked about Anti-Cruelty. They have an excellent program with trained instructors and different levels of instruction from puppies through the AKC Good Citizen class. The class sizes are large enough for the dogs (and their humans) to socialize, but still small enough to keep everything manageable. Yes, the cost is higher than Gage Park, but it's also well worth it. As for the Gage Park Group, I couldn't find any information online. That may be due to liability concerns. The "dog group" wasn't a CPD-sponsored or sanctioned "program" as such, like basketball or swimming. Instead, I the dogs and their humans met in the basement of the field house and had to enter via a side or rear door. It may be worth a trip to the field house to see if the group still meets.

I had a very good experience at Petsmart, but have heard that mine was perhaps an anomaly. My dog tends to put himself at the center of attention (most pugs do) so the teacher spent a lot of time with us.

Thompson 42%. Kozlar 38%. Sullivan 15%. Tominello 5%.

This is just my opinion on the poll results if the election were to be today. Many nearby friends feel it'll be Thompson and Kozlar in a runoff. I give the candidates props for running. I can't wait for the debates between them. Anyone know when and where the debates will be? No negativity please, let's keep it positive and give a shout out to your favorite.

  • Jeanne Marie Mondrella-Keating Real Esate Broker and Chicago Highrise Rep, Jeanne

I agree with Nicki and I also feel it will be between Thompson and Koslar but I do think Patrick Thompson has much more experience behind him with regard to being a Cook County Commissioner, Water Reclamation, etc. I too would like to hear the debate. Koslar is also very intelligent but I think his day will be in the future as he is a little young and green at this point for this position -- my opinion only.

  • rene One of Morty's people

Bridgeport Alliance is planning a debate, however, it will not be announced until the petitions are in and the ballots are published.

Bed set disposal in alley?

Guestroom is being converted into a nursery so I quickly need to get rid of a full size mattress, box spring and bed frame that are currently being used in there.

Salvation Army was a bust -- apparently they only take new items now.

If I leave it in the alley before trash day, does anybody know if streets and sanitation will be able to take it?

  • Post it on craigslist. I've seen tons of "this stuff will be in the alley" notices. I have a friend that would take it but doesn't have a big enough vehicle.

Or the junkers will take some of it.

  • rene One of Morty's people

Most charities cannot take beds or furniture since bedbugs have become such a big deal in the last few years.

A couple of years ago I needed to get rid of a sofa. I called streets and sanitation to find out what to do with it. They said, put it in the alley, if none of the junkers take it we will pick it up with the next regular pick up. I asked if they needed to know when or how bit it was. Nope, just put it out there.

Dunkin Donuts 31st and Halsted what happened?

I was on my way to work this morning and get on the Halsted bus at 31st. I noticed that Dunkin Donuts was closed? There was paper all in the window's and a sign on the door. I didn't have time to go read da sign because the bus was coming. Does anybody know what's going on? I know they were remodeling the dining room by the restrooms. TBH I am a Starbucks guy and don't really go here. But I don't like to see a business especially in Bridgeport fail.

  • GRD GRD

Erik, oh no! Don't apologize, I was just saying that I don't taste any.

  • I probably get Starbucks only a few times per year, but if there is a market for it, and people would buy it, why not have one? Sure would be better than a vacant store or another dollar store.

Dog Fun!

Would anyone be interested in meeting at Armour Park on 32nd and Lituanica for some dog play time in the kiddie playground area??? I do it often with dogs I come across in the park and we always make sure the playground stays clean for the kids!

  • Before I had a yard I'd take my dog to cps property and let my dog play. The areas are generally fenced in and we'll maintained. I've done it for years and never had anyone say anything. In fact, staff often come out to say hello. I just make sure to pick up the poop. Sometimes other dog owners would join us too. I'm in Bronzeville and there are 3 schools blocks from me. Not sure about the schools in brigeport but I'm sure it's similar.

  • Geri retired ARRT

I'd sometimes let my dogs run around the tennis courts at McGuane if they weren't being used. Problem was the gates sometimes didn't lock properly and would slowly open. They need to be fixed. Dogs need to run once in awhile and that's about the only spot I could think of that was totally fenced in.

New Zaytune location?

I see that there's a new Zaytune sign at 35th and Western. I assume that this is a new one, not the one on Morgan in Bridgeport. Does anyone have the scoop? It's a great place. They might be well-advised to wait until the Western Ave. construction is done (if it ever is!) before opening. That construction is brutalizing business around there, as the Archer Ave. construction is in that area.

Maybe they could start serving Turkish/Greek coffee in the meantime?

I am a good friend of Pat Thompson's, but after seeing Kozlar's campaign website tonight, he has my vote. This young man has very good ideas planned for our ward and is very specific. You can tell he wants to be our Alderman and goes into detail on things that I did not even know Alderman had. There is no spin on issues, he does not name call, and if he comes through on his plans, our neighborhood will be back to where it used to be when I was growing up. He deserves this opportunity and we need to give it to him. Take a look for yourself = www.johnkozlar.com It makes me proud to see our next generation step up and make a difference in our neighborhood.

Turning right at 31st and Loomis

My number one pet peeve driving home from work is people making a right turn from the LEFT lane at 31st/Loomis. You are supposed to get to the lane closest to the curb to make a right turn period. This intersection seems to be the worst at making a proper turn. Its not rocket science.

  • Mary 17 year Bridgeport resident

Drivers are doing this all over especially to avoid pedestrians in the cross walk, I wonder if these drivers know how much the fines are when they are caught? Please call 311 when you see this happening otherwise it is like it never happened. The city goes by the numbers when they assign police to traffic duties.

  • Erik H Loyola & UofC alumnus, Chicago Loot Drop charity

Are there really, technically multiple lanes over there? If so, they sure could use some paint to make that clear.

Internet Service Provider - RCN?

We're moving to Bridgeport soon, and are wondering if we should switch from Comcast to RCN? Comcast has generally been great where we are now, but the prices are getting expensive. They're so manipulative the way they structure their prices. We were unhappy with AT&T, so we're not really interested. What have been your experiences?

  • denise b concerned citizen

I have AT&T internet had to get a $200 home tower to get it to work. No towers in my area. Had to pay up front then they took off bill.Service OK

  • RCN doesnt seem to have as many available channels. I had a friend who had it within his condo (no other choice) and hated it. I always call Comcast on the anniversary of my start day and threaten to leave - they have kept the price the same now for 4 years.

JL, you got "democratic" (democracy) and "republic" mixed up. What you're referring to as "republic" is a direct democracy. When leaders make decisions on behalf of their constituents, it's a republic—when the representatives are elected, it's a democratic republic.

Daley Thompson's Illegal Tax Break

It is funny how as soon as you mention Daley Thompson's illegal tax break his supporters go silent. A "clerical error" that continued for 12 years and only stopped when the BGA caught him red-handed is pretty hard to defend.

A new day is dawning- the old machine and it's old ways of doing things has got to go. Good news for the connected like DT is that they can live off of the largesse and fat they've accumulated for decades.

Whether we're talking Daley Thompson with his multi-generational connections, or Emanuel with his billionaire donor bosses, 2015 will mark a return to people power. The clout crooks are getting the boot this time.

Won't someone please think of the helicopter people?

I know when I'm voting this whenever that I will have one thing in mind. The health and well-being of the helicopter people. People born half helicopter. I know that they will promise us two things: a helicopter in every driveway, and six chipotles for every resident.

"Vote for the helicopter people. Vote for trust. Vote for the helicopter people." -Al Capone

  • next time, just take ONE hit and see how you feel.

  • This comment is way too anti-hovercraft and way too pro helicopter! Someone alert the admins!

How can anyone be an anti-hoverdite? Yeah, I get it, them make loud noises as they cruise between the river and land, but that's the price we pay for badassery. I will personally hand out ear plugs to anyone scared of a litter hover craft noise for 30 seconds a few times a day!
