Yes, I am a supporter of anybody, any effort, any authority, any vision, any basic common sense that's stands on a clean environment as the foundation to encourage economic development, educations, safe and sanitary housing and yes, clean streets, yards, alleys and a reduction in our crime rate.
Our young folk act the way our community looks: ugly and nasty. It suggests that no one is in control, no one really cares and therefore why should they care.

It's going to be interesting to see how many people will take opposition to cleaning up North Lawndale as it has never been cleaned and maintained since we (me, you, us Black folk) moved in. If we can't do anything else, we can clean up our community, but the cleansing process starts from the inside...........OUT with our attitudes and self-respect.

Thanks for responding, Sir Sel. I definitely believe that sanitation should be a priority, but I don't think that's all a candidate should be selling. I'd rather see what his/her plan is for moving the community forward, with business, infrastructure and amenities for its residents, and as for that particular candidate, I haven't seen it yet, and I would urge you to look deeper as well.

I've seen the turnaround of many areas: West Loop, South Loop, the convention center, and I can't recall that the charge was led by a massive cleanup, rather a comprehensive plan for the area to bring development in which beautification was included.

Mr. Scott, Jr has been with the Chicago Park District for many years, and those parks (specifically the smaller ones in the ward) are a real mess, and based on that record his promises to clean the ward can't really be trusted. Parks are the cornerstone of communities, as well as its schools--many of which are attached to parks and controlled by the district.

I agree with you on one thing though- if WE (the residents) can't do anything else WE should be cleaning up our community. It's refreshing to see community programs that are geared towards this cause and I hope to see many of our neighbors get involved. That work starts with them, but I'd like to see the ward leadership tackle the bigger issues.

Anyone know a reasonable Construction Debris Haul Away Person/Service in the area?

Having a new deck built. Need to get rid of the old materials. I am about to order a dumpster but thought I would see if anyone knows of a person/team that specializes in this area.

Thanks!

Hammond Elementary

Why have so many teachers left Hammond Elementary since the retirement of Mrs. Salinas? There has been a mass exodus of teachers, teachers aids and other staff since Mrs. Lugo took over. Some estimates place the turnover rate at 65%. Is this normal for a elementary school in Chicago? Is this school supposed to "Fail" so it can become a charter?

City Council meeting Wednesday, March 18 , 10:00 am. for the vote. (You may have to wait all day, or it could be rushed through at the start, or be bundled with many other provisions-- but with something this important there is generally a presentation followed by invited testimony/sponsorship-- if speaking is allowed, you have to sign up in advance. Expect the whole 2nd floor hall to be full of people who want to speak, so come early.)
